The wonderful heart-hands card message (upper left) began as a note that Susan Lyon, one of my oldest and dearest friends, wrote me a decade ago. It's one of seven cards this Contributing Cardie now has to her name! Susan's husband Kim is a great guy who pretty much rolls with what a Cardthartic fangirl his wife is. However. While the two were vacationing in Cape Cod a couple of summers ago, Susan wanted to pop into every shop she saw and, when she spotted one of our fixturesthere, she’d introduce herself to the staff and talk cards. Finally, Kim made his feelings known. “Susan,” he said, “I know how much you love Jodee and her company. Me, I happen to love my wife, and I’d really like to be on vacation with her instead of a Cardthartic brand ambassador.”

“Just putzing around” can’t come easily to Cardie Judy Gibson . She’s lived in six U.S. states and Egypt, taught college English, edited a magazine, and co-owned a yarn shop. Now living in Kendal at Longwood, a Quaker-related retirement community about an hour from Philadelphia, she “proudly serves as the greeting card buyer for the Gateway Shop, a small but wonderful ‘necessarie’ shop within Kendal‘s main building. It’s a volunteer job, and I love it! I order from over a dozen suppliers, and can assure you that Cardthartic is the most popular line in the shop! We came to know Contributing Cardie proposed the hilarious message that became retirement card When asked how she might like a dedication on that card back to read, she replied straightaway, “With love to Jim,” and explained, “Jim is my hubby with Alzheimer’s. Thought we would have many golden retirement years together, but it was not to be.”

Admirably lighthearted for the challenges she faces, Marilyn’s correspondence is peppered with fun and good humor. And she also lovingly wrote, “On a serious note, I have been thinking what we could say in a card for caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s. Along the lines of ‘thinking of you,’ but more personal, more poignant. A comforting card for those of us in the trenches.”

She went on to very tenderly describe,“Our granddaughter Allie, now seven, has only known her ‘Pop’ with Alzheimer’s, and she loves him as is, unconditionally. Jim’s now in Memory Care and, in light of his progression, I have been protective of Allie and not taken her for a visit yet. She thinks he’s away at camp :) When I warned her that Pop might not know her anymore, she never skipped a beat, saying, ‘That’s okay, Mimi, he will remember me in his heart.’ Out of the mouths of babes.”

“Dear Jodee,” she emailed in October of 2021. “Two weeks ago my beautiful friend Beth died of mean, mean pancreatic cancer. I am not being a nice person at all right now because I am so mad at cancer ... and fate ... and anything else I can blame because it was just so unfair. She was 58! So wrong on every level.

“I wanted you to know that Beth’s sweet husband called just now to say thank you for the cards over the last year. Tim said it always lifted her heart when my cards arrived. Near the end, I sent a card every other day. Tim said he would reach in the mailbox and there would be a sage green envelope and he knew it was from me. And because it would make her happy, he would read the cards aloud. He said, ‘That way, though you sent them to Beth, it felt like you also sent them to me.’”

The new Grief Support card upper left I created in honor of Paige and her amazing gift for making close friends like Beth and Tim. This great muse inspired me to stop and consider that — when we lose our nearest and dearest — the focus is naturally on the love we had for them. What gets us through, though, has to be our willingness to still feel all the warmth and love, admiration and appreciation they had for us. Thank you, Paige. May you forever feel Beth’s great love for you.

Great friends Tracy Batchelor and Susan Colver t are to thank for the new Friends’ Sofa card.

Tracy is greeting card buyer for Hollin Hall Variety Store in Alexandria, VA, where listening to the customer is how owners Doug & Deborah Bentley have ensured their store’s success. On behalf of those customers, last fall Tracy suggested that we create the “Thanks, Coach” design you’ll see on pg 65.

Tracy was happily hands-on with product development, coaching our Creative team every step of the way. While collaborating, Tracy mentioned, “I told my friend Susan that I was working with you on this card. It was Susan who introduced me to Cardthartic – the impetus for Variety Store to start carrying your cards a few years back – and she was SOOOO excited!! (A little jealous, too, I think.)”

I replied, “Your crediting your good friend makes me wonder why we’ve not created a Meanings of Life ‘friends’ card?! We really should! Not sure what the icon would be, but it’ll come to us … or you!” Superstar that she is, Tracy got right back to me, “Maybe you could riff on the show Friends – a big comfy couch, with a nod to being so at ease when together?” Brilliant!

Susan told us, “Tracy and I have been good friends for many years and she is a wonder at most everything she tackles. Her creativity bubbles over in all that she touches. So when I suggested she take a look at Cardthartic cards, I knew it would be love at first sight.”

Since we were old enough to hold a phone, we’ve craved those hours-long calls with our besties.
