A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

He said no rainfall was received in the inland catchment area during the rains of the weekend of 7 May meaning areas within iLembe did not benefit and are still severely affected by the drought.

Harichunder said the scheme is not labour intensive, estimating that 15 people will be employed on the scheme once it is complete.

“The scheme was not intended to be labour intensive in the first place. We will employ some local people, but also highly skilled operators will be required,” he said.

He said a meeting has been held with locals to clarify that the main purpose of the scheme is to supply water.

Project manager Krish Govender said: “Due to the severe drought conditions at the moment we have actually earmarked this as a drought relief project currently in order to take water all the way up to Ballito as opposed to KwaDukuza which was initially planned.”

EMBERS of the media were invited to a tour of the Lower Thukela Bulk Water Supply Scheme last Thursday to view and report on the progress that has been made on the project.

Once complete, the project will have a water treatment works providing 55 mega-litres (Ml) of water per day, a weir abstraction works, a rising main reservoir and 30km of gravity pipeline.

The scheme was deemed necessary to ensure the iLembe District Municipality met its increasing supply demands brought on by the growth of the district.

The Department of Water and Sanitation found that the scheme would be less costly, would have the least impact on the environment and would be the quickest to implement out of two options that had been identified.

Phase One of the project will supply 55 Ml of water per day to all the areas between Tugela Village and Groutville.

Phase Two of the project will supply water to Mandeni and Ballito.

Rapist gets 25 years imprisonment C

ONVICTED rapist Thulani Nzama (41) was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment on Thursday 12 May, at the KwaDukuza Regional Court for raping a 24-year-old woman in 2014.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the victim was attacked and raped on 3 May 2014.

“At around 1pm the victim was on

her way home when she was approached by the accused who offered her a job. Whilst they were walking the accused attacked the victim, dragged her into the bushes and raped her. He took her cellphone and fled the scene.

She screamed for help and members of the community came to her rescue,” he said.

Zwane said people who had come to help the victim then searched the area until the accused was apprehended.

He said police were called to the scene and upon arrival the accused was handed over and was

KZN SAPS spokesperson Major Shooz Magudulela said following the burning of three trucks during the protests on Friday evening a case of malicious damage to property was opened at KwaDukuza police station.

He said no arrests had been made by Monday. The road was closed for most of Friday for fear of

Ntshawini ward councillor Nevas Hlatshwayo said residents decided to protest because many accidents have occurred in that area, injuring people, and residents believe speed humps would avert more accidents.

He condemned the burning of the trucks, and, or, the burning of other public structures as this negatively impacts on people’s lives.

He said it is necessary that leadership meet with community members to discuss their concerns and that these should be escalated to the provincial Department of

PROTEST action broke out in Melville on Monday morning which resulted in community members blocking the R102 with stones and burning tyres.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Major Shooz Magudulela, this demonstration follows one that occurred last Wednesday in the same area in which an estimated 100 people blocked the R102 over a lack of service delivery.

He said no arrests were made in both incidents and that on both days of protesting police remained on the scene to monitor the situation.

Melville (Ward 24) councillor Thokozani Msweli said the protests were about issues pertaining to the ANC and that the organisation should comment on the matter.

Deputy minister visits school

OHANLAL ‘Johnny’ Ramhith, the former building inspector in the KwaDukuza Municipality, died last Thursday night in hospital after a short illness aged 78.

Uncle Johnny, as he was popularly known by both young and old, was born in New Guelderland on 26 January 1938 and attended the New Guelderland Government-Aided Primary School up to standard six.

He proceeded to the Stanger Indian High School (now Stanger Secondary) where he matriculated in 1959. He commenced work at the Borough of Stanger (KwaDukuza Municipality) in 1960 as a clerk and remained there in various positions until being boarded off on medical grounds in 1992 with a period of continuous service for 33 years.

He served as building/drainage inspector for 19 years.

After his retirement he served various religious organisations, education committees, cricket clubs and associations, the

MAKHOSANDILE ZULU JYOTHI LALDAS DEPUTY Minister of Environmental Affairs Barbara Thomson visited Bongimfundo Primary School recently.

The purpose of her visit was to see how pupils use the computer room and the permaculture project that commenced early in April.

Speaking to the pupils Thomson said: “Earth is our only environment and we all have to play our part in taking care of it. We all have to get into the habit of reducing, recycling and reusing our waste products. Even electrical items are recycled.”

She was accompanied by the MEC of agriculture Cyril Xaba and the director Allan Werth of SIMS Recycling Solution.

The deputy minister assured the pupils that the relevant agricultural department will assist the school in harvesting rain water by providing more water tanks and other items that the school will need to progress in its permaculture project.

Commenting on the school, she complimented the principal and staff for the cleanliness and the discipline of the pupils.

Principal Pitamber Ramgathi thanked the deputy minister and all other officials both from national and provincial government saying: “It is an honour and privilege for our school to be visited by you. We acknowledge your presence and generosity towards our school.”

In the last few years of his life he spent time fishing, being involved with LOTARE as its treasurer and serving on the executive and attending satsang regularly at the Sri Ram Mandir despite his ill-health.

At the time of his death, he was still operating a drawing office at home and was registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession. Furthermore, he was a consultant in the building and town planning fields.

According to close friend Jayce Singh, Ramhith was a remarkable man who led a full life.

“He had so much more to offer to the community of KwaDukuza of which he was an integral component. His death leaves not only a void in his family, but also amongst his friends and the people of this town. Go well Uncle Johnny, hamba kahle!

He is survived by his wife Dhanwanthee, son Ashwin, daughter Jenny, grandson Mishvir, son-in-law Vinesh, daughter-inlaw Mogie, thre sisters, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Statistics SA’s youth labour market reports reflected that, of the approxi-

mately 19.7-million working-age youth (15 to 34 years), 9.8-million were not economically active, 6.2-million were employed, and 3.6-million were unemployed. The "not economically active" include discouraged work-seekers, full-time students, and homemakers.

Proposed shopping mall and civic centre THE KwaDukuza Concerned Citizens Group (KCCG) must be complimented for researching the proposed development which should be of great concern to all citizens of KDM. The letter published last week points out a number of irregularities in the awarding of the tender and emphasises the financial, social, economic and recreational implications on the ratepayer and the general public of KDM. Recently our municipality has been experiencing a number of protests related to service delivery in respect of housing, water supply, electricity, sanita-

tion and infrastructure. Our municipality should concentrate on service delivery and improving and maintaining existing facilities rather than embarking on new projects. for economic development and employment we need more factories and not malls.

Our present sporting facilities are of historic significance and should remain central for the benefit of our local schools and the general public. Municipalities in general must accept that they face many challenges and they need to work to overcome these.

Universities are hosting their graduation ceremonies all around South Africa, but the only worry fixed in my mind is that are all these graduates guaranteed jobs?

And the sad truth is, no they are not. The fortunate ones are those who had sponsors who promised them employment after graduation, but the rest will become a part of the ever growing percentage of unemployed youth in this country.

Unemployment is a growing challenge in this country and I feel that our government should take serious measures in addressing this matter.

Tears fill my eyes as I imagine the worth of these degrees, that students have fought so hard to get, falling to the ground due to a lack of employment.

Chances of one getting a job in this country of ours have been measured by the amount of connection a person preserves from the inside or the worth in their pockets. For a regular person who is struggling to make ends meet, they are left to endure the consequences of starvation and misery.

This leaves them to resort to unlawful behaviour such as crime, and robbery becomes a source of income to the unemployed, struggling individuals in this country.

Jobs are a necessity to a person’s life as it provides a stable income that guarantees the fulfillment of their daily need.

In this country there has always been a constant struggle for employment. Sadly enough it is the youth who

suffer the most and I ask myself, what future will there be if it is the same future leaders who are left to suffer.

When will the doors open for these young individuals to earn a living and stop relying on social grants?

Young entrepreneurs are failing to survive in the business world because there are no sponsors willing to support their initiatives.

I weep for the time I graduate as I do not wish to become a statistic in the rate of unemployment.

Government should stop making promises during elections and not delivering on them as time progresses as this impacts badly on our country. We cannot all rely on tax payers’ contribution, but we should all be tax payers so that we can contribute.

Artisans hold the answer THE latest statistics reveal a slight decline of youth living below the poverty line. While this is good news, the status quo remains the same.

The youth are still living in dire poverty and terrible conditions, and the unemployment rate is still growing.

Unless the government devises appropriate programmes, the current state of living of our youth will persist.

This is a reality for the youth that, for whatever reason, could not complete school and find themselves unskilled and unemployable.

We believe that if the unskilled youth are exposed to education programmes tailored to suit them, the poverty gap would be bridged substantially.

However, access to higher education system is also a challenge, given the high cost of university education which led to the #FeesMustFall Campaign last year, and the lack of capacity at tertiary institutions.

This calls for an alternative, which are occupational qualifications.

These qualifications are accessible to everyone, including those who could

not finish school. They are quality assured by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), and include the Electrical Line Mechanic qualification.

The national Decade of Artisans initiative can only be realised if the youth consider occupational qualifications as a viable option for the betterment of their lives, and alleviation of poverty.

I have witnessed this many times.

Teasing threatens the dogs’ sense of safety and security. If I was taunted and bullied constantly by someone in the street or over the fence, I’d probably also become annoyed.

This can also cause disturbance to others.

pers run an educational awareness article to teach children and adults to ignore dogs, to resist the urge to stand in the road or in driveways and stare, mimicbark or throw stones, and rather just ignore the dogs and go past quietly.

They must not hang over walls and look into other yards, which in itself is an invasion of privacy. This foolish behaviour is often the root cause of problems.

Zero tolerance for sexual offenders ACDP branches of KwaDukuza have welcomed with much jubilation the ruling to sentence Thulani Nzama to 25 years imprisonment for raping a 24-year old woman.

The ACDP acknowledges that rape statistics in SA as a whole are unacceptably high. We know that 1300 women are raped in South Africa every day while 90% of rapes are not reported to the police. With the conviction rate for violent crimes only about 10% in SA, it poses a safety threat to women in our land.

The ACDP commends the local court for the sentence it meted out.

Sentences like these that will deter this inhumane behaviour and put humanity and morality back into our society.

We also need a government and a justice system that increases the conviction rate for violent crimes like rape and hands down tougher sentences for all sexual offences. Government should moreover consider banning pornography because it fosters a culture of disrespect towards women.

The ACDP also believes that the SAPS should intensify its sexual offences awareness campaigns. We recommend that SAPS introduce such

community awareness campaigns through its sector policing forums. We call on government to ensure that all police stations have friendly victim empowerment facilities with staff that have been specially trained to take evidence from traumatised victims.

All in all we welcome the sentence meted out. We believe that it has sent out a strong and clear message to sexual offenders who prey on our women. Justice has been done.

New head coach backs 2016/17 Dolphins squad N

EW head coach Grant Morgan is looking forward to instilling his fresh philosophy in the Sunfoil Dolphins squad of 2016/17 and taking the Durban franchise forward with the talented crop of players that now have a wealth of experience within it.

The likes of Cricket South Africa contracted players Kyle Abbott and David Miller have left the Dolphins and will continue their career at the Warriors and VKB Knights respectively, however, Morgan backs the talent that remains.

“It is a bit of blow to lose players like Kyle [Abbott] and David [Miller], however there is a huge amount of talent still left here at the Dolphins,” says Morgan.

“There is no doubt that a very competitive Dolphins team will represent the Dolphins in all formats come the start of the new season.”

Morgan is also confident the strength of the province’s two provincial squads – KwaZulu-Natal and KZN Inland – during the 2015/16 season will help create a healthy competition for places in the Dolphins mix come the new season.

Mthokozisi Shezi’s return to Durban on a permanent basis, having rejoined the Dolphins on a loan from the Cape Cobras during the second half of the 2016/17 season, is a pleasing one while exciting talents Sibonelo Makhanya, Sarel Erwee and Tshepang Dithole have all earned Franchise contracts for the first time.

“I was privileged to coach youngsters like De Kock, Bavuma and Hendricks while I was at the Highveld Strikers a few years ago and it is always great to see young talents like that making their way up the ladder.

“Our younger guys like Sibs [Makhanya], Andile [Phehlukwayo] and a few others are also massively exciting and certainly have the talent, for me, this season is all about trying to get them to settle,” says Morgan.

The Dolphins don’t have any reason to believe that Imran Tahir won’t turn out for them in 2016/17, however, confirmation of this is only expected in the near future due to the world class leg spinner yet to sign his CSA contract.

NEELAN’S Auto Gledhow denied Sundowner Darts Club the title league after a 8-5 win.

Darts fans turned out in large numbers to witness the top of the table clash between Neelan’s Auto Gledhow and Sundowner Darts Club. Neelan's Auto Gledhow team Charlie Pillay, Rowen Pillay, Navern Coopsamy, Justin Naidoo, Jodie Naidoo, Dhana Govender and Klyle Pillay ousted Sundower Darts Club.

In the team game (1001x2) Neelan's Auto won the first set while the 2nd set was won by Sundowner.

The game was level in the trebbles game (801x2) and the scores were tied once more 1-1.

In the team doubles (701) Neelan's Auto Gledhow stamped their authority by winning the three games which sent

a shockwave to the Sundowner camp.

The Sundowner Darts Club team Darrel Shanmagum, Neeran Somnath, Terrence Pillay, Terrence Subban, Len Naidoo and KZN Vetran Paddy Padayachee had to regroup in the singles match, but managed to secure three points which did not trouble The Neelan’s Auto camp.

Neelan’s Auto won 8-5 on the night.

In the other game, Kwafel Darts Club comprising of Vinesh Geanbally, Jerry Govender, Nine Pillay, Devan Gounden, Preolin Muthusamy, Meersingh Soobram, Ajen Singh, Preston Naidoo and Jerry Arunachellum brought the Darnall Young Boys to a sounding 11-5 defeat.

Next week the two giants Neelan's Auto Gledhow and Kwafel Darts Club do battle for the league title at the Quartz Sports Bar & Conference Centre in Stanger Manor.
