A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

In addition to the project, Pillay also issued more than 200 title deeds to the community of Mbozamo, Senzangakhona in Shakaville and Indian Village flats, giving residents lawful ownership of their homes in line with the Human Settlements Department’s Enhanced Extended Discount Benefit Scheme (EEDBS) policy as well as the exit stage of post-1994 housing projects.

The Sokesimbone Rural Housing is expected to yield 1000 units in two wards namely 1 and 25 in Doringkop and approximately 165 houses have already been constructed.

The project has been registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC) and construction of about 200 houses has already commenced.

JYOTHI LALDAS BABY Thabiso was found abandoned with his umbilical cord still attached outside the First National Bank in King Shaka Street in early June only a few days (possibly a few hours) old.

The Stanger Hospital intern who found him immediately took him to the hospital and contacted Child Welfare SA - KwaDukuza informing them of the baby.

Baby Thabiso spent the month of June recuperating at Stanger Hospital and received a second chance at life.

Once he was well enough he was removed from the hospital to ensure he was not at risk of infection and placed in the care of the welfare.

Baby Thabiso became the responsibility of social worker Siddiqa Syed who was tasked with his case.

After placing him in secure care with an approved caregiver and meeting all his needs, Syed set about trying to find his biological parents.

However, she has been unsuccessful to date.

Baby Thabiso will have to wait a while longer before he can be placed in a forever home with a family of his own, as SAPS will first have to conclude their investigation. Until then however, the kindness of good samaritans and the hard work of his social worker will keep him safe and comfortable.

On hearing about baby Thabiso recently, GBP Boiler Maintenance owner Burton Paliam approached Child Welfare SA - KwaDukuza vice president Shantha Nair at the Stanger Winter Fair 2016 with a bag full of blankets and goodies and tasked her with the delivery of the item to baby Thabiso.

“He eats well and loves to sleep. He is a very pleasant baby and hardly ever cries. Our only problem is we do not have a cot for him and this worries me,” she said.

Syed explained that providing cots has been difficult as they are expensive.

“The funds we received for each child goes towards providing their formula and nappies and other necessities, so we have two babies at the moment without cots,” said Syed.

She appealed to anyone who may have information on the parents or family of baby Thabiso to contact her on 032 551 2129.

Anyone interested in making donations towards the cots can also contact Syed.

Kranskop double murder suspect arrested in KwaDukuza JYOTHI LALDAS KRANSKOP detectives made a breakthrough when they arrested a 36-year-old man for two counts of murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect was arrested within 24 hours after he allegedly killed two women in the Kranskop area.

The suspect appeared in the Kranskop

Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was remanded in custody. He will appear again on 27 July for a formal bail application.

According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, on Thursday at about 10pm two women were at their homestead at Ekwazini area, Kranskop when they were approached by the suspect who was visiting his girlfriend.

"It is alleged that the suspect shot and killed his girlfriend (25) and her mother (50) after an argument. The suspect fled the scene after the incident. Kranskop police attended the scene and two cases of murder were opened at Kranskop police station for further investigation.

"Kranskop detectives wasted no time in tracing the suspect and within 24 hours the suspect was arrested in KwaDukuza on Friday morning. On further investigation, the members recovered a 9mm pistol in Inanda suspected to be the same firearm used to kill the women. It will be sent for ballistic"testing for further investigation."

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial Commissioner Bhekinkosi Langa commended the members for their quick arrest of the suspect for committing such brutal murders.

"This is strongly condemned and totally unacceptable in our society. These two defenseless women where shot and killed for no apparent reason. I appeal to the community to stand up and report criminals who are in possession of unlicensed firearms as they contribute to murders," he said.

EVEN suspects were arrested on Monday, 11 July, at Shaka’s Head, Umhlali area for allegedly being involved in the burning of the ward councillor’s house and vehicle earlier this year.

This is according to KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane who said the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Monday following an intelligence-driven operation by the Phoenix Tactical Response Team and detectives from Mandeni SAPS. “The operation was conducted after detectives were investigating a public violence and malicious damage to property that was reported at Shaka’s Head . They appeared in the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 12 July, for public violence, arson and malicious damage to property,” he said.

To illustrate this, I want to tell you a story. I was walking towards my shop the other morning and saw myself and another girl mirrored in the glass. We looked very similar, we both had blonde hair, blue- green eyes, and were of similar height and weight - I had driven in my new car and she turned to me and said: “I had to borrow money for taxi fare to come to work and I don’t know how I am going to get home” I looked at our reflection and thought - what is the one thing that divides us? I realised that i didn’t have wealthy parents to fall back on when I was growing up, and I didn’t have anyone who was going to look out for me and give me things, so I rationalised - all I actually had was my brain.

I just decided that it did not have to be that way and I decided that I would have a better life where I could have everything that I wanted and I decided that I was worth the best and that I would be the best I could possibly be and all good things would be attracted to me. Oscar’s sentence is a disgrace THE sentence of six years imposed on Oscar Pistorius for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp is a disgrace to women all over the world.

A person who willfully shoots someone through a closed door thinking there was an intruder even though your partner is not lying next to you in bed, should be given at least the minimum sentence for murder which is 15 years.

This judgment has now set a precedence and has given men the authority to kill their partners

and use the same excuse as Oscar.

In order to fight for women's rights the state must now take this matter to a higher prosecuting authority and have this judge recused from this case as she clearly is not meting out justice fairly.

This mild sentence given to Oscar has shamed our nation and brought our justice system into disrepute.

It is of utmost importance to evolve our nation by protecting the future. It is then also important to raise awareness amongst parents or parental figures.

Children that are raised in severely dysfunctional homes where they may very well be abused are often

extremely vulnerable and tend to resort to juvenile crime, prostitution and substance abuse.

Protection, by means of awareness against these self­destructing acts is a child’s human right.

Active children’s community development organi­ sations are highly commended for their constant en­ deavours in changing what we know to be, our future.

As Walt Disney once said, “that’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up”.

We do tend to easily forget the psychological vul­ nerability that comes with being a child and the role that our surrounding environments played in moulding us into who we now are.

THE longest period between all major international conflicts, up to today, is 21 years between the end of World War 1, which started in 1914, to 1939, when World War 2 broke out.

A quick analysis of the eight major international wars shows the outbreak dates as between two and 20 years.

This is extremely concerning as excluding the 9 800 American troops still in Afghanistan and the second Gulf War, which began in 2003, we are 13 years into the time between another

Sagar Arora of India, who notched up a phenomenal 414 runs in the 2015/2016 season including a top-score of 107 runs was voted best batsman of the club. Last month KZN Cricket Union honoured Arora after voting him the best bowler in the KZN Challenge League. Surauv Singh and Arhad Singh were voted the best fielder and most improved player respectively. The coveted president’s award was won by Privesh Balipersad.

In the domestic Twenty-20 League and 50-Overs League, Suhail “Soya” Singh was adjudicated player of the year. Tokeer Malik grabbed the batting award with Keane Govender walking away with the bowling award.

In the U16 League, Adesh Bageloo was voted the best batsman with his twin brother, spin sensation Santhir Bageloo scooping the bowling award.

Wasim Suleman walked away with the fielding award and the coveted player of the year award in the U16 ranks. Arveer Maharaj was voted the most improved player in the U16 ranks.

At the 31st annual general meeting held prior to the awards banquet, Rajiv “Tambuti” Singh was re-elected as president of the club for the third year in succession. Other officials elected to serve the ever popular Dawnheights outfit for the new season were vicepresidents Nikilesh Misra and Shaneel Maharaj, secretary Shahil Ramsunder, records clerk Suhail Singh, treasurer Suveer Maharaj and public relations officer Isaac Abraham.

Wanderers set to be promoted

African Wanderers are set to be promoted to the regional league after an amazing season which will come to an end this week.

Wanderers cemented their lead with Andries Masuku’s goal in the 25th minute of the second half.

Wanderers’ chairperson Senzo Mbambo commended his side for their stellar performance and convincing victory.

“The boys played with determination and they have been focused throughout the season. I am certain that once they are promoted to the regional league they will manage to maintain that determination and focus and perform just as well,” he said.

AFRICAN Wanderers are set to be promoted from the KwaDukuza Local Football Association Premier League – stream 1 to the SAB Regional league after defeating Ocean City 3 – 0 in their second to last encounter of the season this past Saturday.

The win ensured that Wanderers remain at the top spot of the local league with 62 points ahead of their season’s finale against Happy Stars this week.

Two teams – log leaders and the one that finishes at second place – will advance from the local to the regional league.
