A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World at the weekend and now features in a long list of remarka­ ble women who continue to make a difference to the countries they live in and the world.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

Peaceful march for new police station MAKHOSANDILE ZULU THE ANC Youth League – Hlomendlini branch led residents of the area in a peaceful march on Saturday from Padianagar to Hlomendlini Sports Grounds where a memorandum of demands was handed over to the South African Police Service, KwaDukuza cluster.

A member of the local youth league, Thobias Nie Ntuli said community members embarked on the march

protesting against social ills in the area and that a new police station should be built closer to residents as the current Newark police station is far away and people face difficulties when they have to report crimes.

He said the community also stated that a satellite police station be placed in the area while a new one is being built.

Ntuli said the community also complained about police officers in the Newark station who allegedly do not carry out their duties accordingly and allegedly accept bribes.

He said the community also complained about taverns operating illegally in the area. Newark SAPS communications, Malusi Ngubane said SAPS were given 21 days to report back to the community and that the memorandum they received was handed over to the cluster commander, Brigadier Bheki Zondi. He said the memorandum stated that construction of a new police station located closer to Hlomendlini residents should commence in July this year.

day.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst the driver of the taxi was severely entrapped in the wreckage and required advanced life support intervention before being removed.

“Rescuers worked systematically in adverse weather conditions to free the critically injured man. Once freed from the mangled wreck, the patients condition rapidly deteriorated and unfortunately he succumbed to his extensive injuries.”

The driver of the second vehicle was declared dead on scene, Herbst added.

“An additional four people sustained

critical injuries with three others sustaining serious injuries. Patients were transported by IPSS Medical Rescue, EMRS and other services.

Thank you Mandini fire and rescue as well as the RTI.”

Herbst said IPSS Medical Rescue responded to a total of 13 motor vehicle collisions during the course of the day. “Many people sustained varying injuries. We wish them all a speedy recovery.”

He said in the KwaDukuza Region 50 to 70% of the individuals that lead in the ANC’s local government election nomination process are new candidates, meaning current councillors could possibly be replaced.

He added that community members could be unsettled by the possible change by falsely assuming that developments, such as housing and electricity, that are yet to be rolled out would no longer materialise under a newly elected councillor.

Mngadi said he had received a letter from residents of Kwa-80 section in Ward 3 in which demands made by the residents were outlined.

With regards to the section being made into a Ward, Mngadi said this is highly unlikely as an estimate of 100 people reside in the section meanwhile an estimate of a maximum of 4000 and a minimum 3000 people need to reside in an area for it to be made a Ward.

He said the letter also stated that the community wants a road and a

school to be constructed in the area as well as a mobile clinic and police station.

He said he was not aware of a call for him to step down as councillor.

However, he said he had made it public sometime last year that he would not stand for re-election.

“I’m not even one of the four [ANC] nominees to contest elections this year,” he said.

Mngadi said that local leadership will meet with community representatives on Wednesday 11 May at the Thukela Hall to discuss these issues further.

Three charged for torching Driefontein community hall

WADUKUZA Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has welcomed the arrest of a group of suspects charged for torching a community hall during a community protest in Driefontein, KwaDukuza on 20 April.

Three men, aged between 21 and 36, are facing charges of arson. One man was arrested at the weekend and two others on Tuesday, 3 May. The suspect arrested on Saturday appeared at the uMhlali Periodical Court on Monday last week. The two others appeared on Wednesday.

The value of the damages incurred at the community hall amounts to R4 million. Mthembu welcomed the arrests saying that the justice system must reaffirm its authority to those who disregard the law.

“While we condemn the destruction of the community hall, we welcome the latest developments into this case. The arrest of the three suspects is an indication that we are strong at enforcing the law.

“It is now in the hands of the justice

system to take its full course against the suspects. If they are found to be on the wrong side of the law, we expect the court to mete out harsh sentences to affirm its authority. We are also prepared to rally for harsh sentences so that the perpetrators suffer the conse-

Tugela River levels dropping

THE iLembe District Municipality has announced that the Doringkop and Nonoti areas will be affected by the depleting water supply at the Tugela River as a direct result of the drought.

The iLembe District Municipality is currently experiencing low water productions at the San Souci and Mdlebeni schemes due to the low flows at the river.

According to the information received from the municipality, production over 24 hours is sitting at 450 kilolitres as opposed to one million litres.

This means that some areas may be without water already, as iLembe is able to abstract only half of the nor-

mal supply.

The affected areas include San Souci, Sakhamkhanya, St Christopher, Nonoti, Doyiza Tavern, Baptist Church, Nyathikazi, Ohlange, Kamu, Mdlebeni, Sadlokwe and Sokesimbone.

In the interim, water will be supplied through water tankers.

According to district mayor Welcome Mdabe, the district’s Supply Chain Management Unit has been engaged to assist in hiring an excavator to try and dredge the sand from the river, as a short term measure to try and redirect the flows towards the abstraction points. iLembe appeals to all residents to exercise patience as water is being transported from Mandeni Local Municipality and it may take longer for

Big names headed to new Ballito Junction expansion that will see the mall growing to eight times its current size.

HECKERS is the latest leading retailer to confirm it will open in Ballito Junction as part of the centre’s major re-development and

an existing 10 000sqm shopping centre.

The expansion project was set to grow the mall to a sizeable 65,000sqm. Now, by adding Checkers, Ballito Junction will increase in size to 80 000sqm.

In addition, the owners of Ballito Junction are increasing their investment in the development from R1.4 billion to R1.6 billion.

Patrick Flanagan, joint-chairman of Flanagan & Gerard, explains the plans for Ballito Junction originally

Now, with Checkers, it will function as the dominant super-regional mall in its area.

KDM set to fork out R2 billion for Civic Centre rental THE KwaDukuza Concerned Citizens Group has undertaken making the community of KwaDukuza and surrounds aware of the facts regarding the proposed development of a shopping mall and civic precinct on the land where the sporting facilities currently stand. They have, thus far, compiled the fol­ lowing information: ∙ KwaDukuza Municipality's (KDM) original plan was for re­development of the KwaDukuza Golf Course only and did not in­ clude the Recreation and Country Club Grounds and the building of a mall. KDM did not advertise its intention in any of the local newspapers. KDM's intentions appear to be to do the deal in a somewhat surreptitious manner. The developer claims that re­de­ velopment of the golf course bid was adver­ tised on the municipal website on 3 Decem­ ber 2013 and in local and national newspapers. ∙ KDM did not consult with its citizens as is required by legislation. Due processes have not been followed. Ratepayers and ward residents have not been consulted in the decision making process. Most citizens are unaware of their intentions. ∙ The tender process was procedurally unfair because the preferred bidder changed the specifications of the develop­ ment during the bidding process to include a mall, changing the site to a mixed use site and including the central sports complex that was not originally included. ∙ Timing of the preferred bidders

“gift” of a R6 million skills development centre could not have been more improper, considering that the bidder's tender was undergoing the bidding process. KDM in ap­ proving this “gift” compromised the credi­ bility and integrity of the supply chain man­ agement process of the mall development and that both KDM and the preferred bidder did not comply with ethical and moral stan­ dards. Furthermore, KDM appears to have done too little groundwork and did not con­ sider the negative financial impact on the entire region by embarking on a project of this magnitude e.g. increased rates, elec­ tricity, water, etc. ∙ The overall site area to be acquired by the developer is 24,213 hectares at a cost of no less than R8 million. The area is to be utilised as follows: mall development 8,4726 hectares, civic centre 2,0908 hec­ tares; road reserve 1,2408 hectares; future development including future road reserves and servitudes 8,0374 hectares and wet­ land 4,4097 hectares area to be maintained by developer. It is significant to note here that plans are in place to re­zone this area from private and public open space to gen­ eral commercial zone and new street reser­ vation in terms of the KwaDukuza/Stanger Town Planning Scheme. ∙ Inference to be drawn from land acquisition is that as the existing sports complex has been deliberately allowed to decay over the past 21 years with very little maintenance and no upgrades. ment advanced is that as a result of the di­ lapidated condition of the sports complex it is not worth more than the R8 million.

However, if the area is re­zoned as commer­ cial first and then subsequently put out to tender, surely it will fetch much more than the bid price, perhaps more in the region of R50 million. ∙ Anticipated capital expenditure for the proposed development as provided by the developer is expected to total R707 million. The breakdown is as follows: infra­ structure development R49m, sports facili­ ties relocation a paltry R3m, retail centre R390m, civic centre R265m. ∙ KDM maintains that it is experiencing fiscal constraints, given the economic melt­ down that is likely to escalate with consum­ ers failing to pay for services. Furthermore, it maintains that it will be difficult to ar­ range finances given its current financial strength; that it will be required to inject some equity and that it will have to make re­payment of the debt all of which will strain its cash flows. ∙ Against this backdrop, hardly a week goes by without an article appearing in our local newspapers singing the praises of how good this municipality is performing as it wins accolades and awards aplenty. Also, we are bombarded with clean audit reports; how much this municipality has done and achieved for this region via expensive bill­ boards displayed all over town, etc, in the light of all this their arguments seem shal­

low when all of these accolades are taken into account. There is also no indication whatsoever whether any tangible efforts were made to obtain funding from national government or any financial institution.

And, if the municipality is really so good on all fronts as it claims, then surely obtaining finance for this project should be a cake­ walk! Unless of course, all of this is election­ eering talk; everything is not as rosy as they would like everybody to believe and it really is the calm before the storm. ∙ KDM accepted the BOT (Build Oper­ ate Transfer) model as a vehicle to deliver construction of the civic centre. This is an expensive model to use as it is obviously overpriced and the ratepayers will be com­ pelled to fund the entire project. This model has immense financial implications for ratepayers. According to information only five wards out of a total of 27 wards (now 29) in this region contribute to the rate base. The total rentals payable to the de­ veloper will be R1, 730 billion over a 20 year period. ∙ However, should the municipality elect to finance this project at a cost of R265 million over a 10 or 15 year period, the total repayments inclusive of capital and inter­ est totals R465 million and R548 million re­ spectively. The municipality is therefore paying in excess of between R1, 290 billion and R1, 182 billion respectively. ∙ In simple terms, the municipality will repay R1, 730 billion over a 20 year peri­ od to the developer for a civic centre which costs R265 million. This effectively covers

the developers entire capital cost of R707 million for the entire project i.e. mall and civic centre. The developer ends up owning the mall at the expense of the ratepayers.

While the civic centre will be transferred to the municipality on the preferred BOT mod­ el option. ∙ Our primary concern is the enormous financial implications such a huge develop­ ment will have on the ratepayers of the re­ gion, the social impact the mall will have being housed in a residential area that is surrounded by no less than five schools within close proximity of the mall as well as the effect the re­location and decentrali­ sation of our sports facilities will have on our sports people and the community as a whole. ∙ A very important question also needs to be raised here considering the current economic climate as well as the municipali­ ty's inability to perform deliver and service the area under its jurisdiction. Should the municipality be wasting public funds to un­ dertake such a project? Is a civic centre cost­ ing R265 million really an absolute necessi­ ty?

Pupils show love to their mothers

JYOTHI LALDAS MORE than 70 mothers were treated to a special Mother’s Day celebration at the Shakaskraal Old Age Centre on Wednesday last week.

Local ACDP councillor Nel Sewraj also attended and presented the mothers with chocolates as a token of appreciation for upholding family values.

Also present was Pastor Gerald Chetty, chairman of the centre and Dr Nivasha Naidoo, a local medical practitioner and keen supporter of the centre.

The exciting event culminated with all mothers being treated to a delicious Mother’s Day lunch.

The guest speaker was Annet Michelle Sewraj, a psychology and English graduate and founder of Nation Builders, a non-profit organisation that focuses on the empowerment

and development of women and children.

Annet, a mother herself, spoke about the vital role that mothers play in society, especially in modern society where she believes the importance of family life is being eroded and where morals and values are degenerating.

She highlighted the necessity for mothers to develop and build themselves to function at their optimum within the family.

“Mothers are the primary care-givers in the home and the ones who bond and cement the family unit strongly together,” she said.

Sam Moodley, a member of the centre’s management committee thanked Annet for her contribution towards community development.

She was also invited back to conduct a parenting workshop at the centre in the near future.

ILLARNEY Toyota Stanger pulled out all the stops on Saturday when Toyota’s highly anticipated all new Fortuner was launched.

The showroom was packed to capacity as guests awaited the big reveal.

It was quite a spectacular event, with beautiful décor, delicious food and excited guests.

Guests were in awe when the vehicle of the day was made available for them to view.

The all-new Toyota Fortuner replaces a model that has become part of the South African automotive landscape.

Whether you’re venturing to the Southern Cape for a December holiday, or queuing in traffic during the school run, you’re likely to be surrounded by Toyota’s iconic Hiluxbased SUV. The new Fortuner will be built in South Africa, so it should be competitively priced against its direct (imported) competitors.

In Australia, the newcomer is initially sold only with the brand new 130kW/450Nm 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, but it has already been stated that the South African market will receive a bigger line-up.

Note that the 2.8-litre engine’s torque output drops to 420Nm when coupled with a six-speed manual transmission.

The automatic transmission is also a six-speed unit, and is offered in Australia with steering-mounted shift paddles.

The manual transmission features a system called iMT, which blips the throttle on downshifts to allow for rev matching and smoother progress.

With regard to fuel consumption, Toyota claims a very impressive 7.8L/100km for the manual model, and 8.6L/100km for the automatic.

The popularity of the outgoing 2.5-litre D-4D model makes a very strong case for a more affordable model powered by the new 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine. In the new Hilux this engine develops 120kW and 400Nm of torque.

Sales of the 4.0-litre V6 petrol unit were extremely limited last year, so a big question mark hangs over that derivative.

LEMBE Cricket Union was the toast of KZN Cricket at a glittering star studded event held at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Friday, 6 May 2016. This year was indeed special for Ilembe Cricket because Dawnheights Cricket Club and Ilembe Cricket Club brought honour to the region by capturing the KZN Castle Challenge League Stream two and the coveted Castle Challenge League 20 20 Knock Out respectively.

Dawnheights Cricket Club dominated the Castle Challenge League Stream 2 with the aid of their hard hitting Indian National super star Sagar Arora who took home the batting award for the most number of runs scored in the league.

Ilembe Cricket Club had a very successful season capturing the prized Castle Challenge League 20/20 Knock Out Cup and finishing second in the Castle Challenge Stream 1.

Abdulla Mahomed who currently plays for Ilembe was awarded the KZN Under 17 Rural Player of the season.

THe International Kanazawa Cup 2016 hosted last weekend in Durban by the SKISA organisation was dominated by team SKISA, led by Protea head coach Brando Pillay, who demolished all opposition in the team events.

Tournament director Hanshi Sonny Pillay said that the event was attended by a record number of participants, more than 500 karateka from throughout the country as well as abroad and was an overwhelming success with a huge spectator turn out.

“As a matter of interest the Kanazawa Cup one of South Africa's premier tournaments always attracts the top

tournament fighters from throughout the country and never fails to deliver thrills, spills and chills,” said Hanshi Pillay who also serves as the President of KSA (national all styles federation for karate in SA).

Japanese karate maestro the twotime world champion Murakami Manabu, who chaired the championships, expressed his absolute delight at the high standard of fighting techniques on display.

“Every year I attend the Kanazawa Cup and it becomes bigger and better,” said the Maestro Murakami from Japan. He also gave an excellent demo of self defence fighting techniques with local tournament seasoned fighter Njabulo Khumalo as a highlight of the event.

Log leaders lose to Kwafel Darts

WEEKLY REPORTER KWAFEL Darts Club brought log leaders Sundowner Darts Club down after a nail biting finish in the Neelan's Auto league 7-6 to stay in contention for the title.

The Kwafel darts club team comprising Vinesh Geanbally, Devan Gounden, Nine Pillay, Meersingh Soobram, Preolin Muthusamy and Jerry Arunachellum put up a strong fight to hold on the title.

The 1001 x 2 saw Kwafel D C win the first set to lead ,however, Sundowner D C replied strongIn the other Games Neelan's Auto beat Darly to win the second set. nall Young Boys 8-5 respectively.

In the trebbles 801 x 2 Darrel Shanmagum, Neeran Somnath and Logan Moonsamy beat the trio of Vinesh Geanbally, Devan Gounden and Nine Pillay to lead, however, the second set saw Meersingh Soobram, Preolin Muthsamy and Jerry Arunachellum beat Terrence Subban, Paddy Padayachee and Ashley Haripersadh to level the matters.

In the doubles match 701 x 3 Shanmagum and Somnath beat Geanbally and Gounden. In the second game Pillay and Soobram won to level the scores. In the third game Padayachee and Subban beat Muthusamy and (15 May 1964 – 1 March 2016) Arunachellum to lead once more.
