WADUKUZA Municipality was recently announced as one of the most financially sustainable municipalities in the country by financial ratings agency Ratings Afrika.

This was announced in the agency’s latest financial analysis of 100 of the biggest South African municipalities for the 2014/15 financial year.

The agency measures each municipality’s operating performance, liabilities management, budget practices and liquidity position it compiles a Municipal Financial Stability Index (MFSI), giving each municipality a

KwaDukuza on top in latest financial ratings >> ‘It is heartening to learn that KwaDukuza has done so well...’ mark out of 100.

According to the report, KwaDukuza has maintained a consistent financial position over the past five years.

Speaking to the Weekly, mayor Ricardo Mthembu said: “We were the best scoring municipalities in the 2014/2015 financial year each with a

score of 78. This means that we have well entrenched financial policies, budgets based on sound long-term financial strategies, we adhere to good budgetary practices, strict financial control and good revenue collection.

“It is heartening to learn that KwaDukuza has done so well over the years.”

Mthembu added, since around

2004 onwards, KwaDukuza had been under serious financial constraints and performing at the lowest levels in the country.

“By 2010, we had achieved second position in the country. In 2011 till 2013, we were at number one. We are the only municipality that has demonstrated such consistent resilience.”

A PRAYER breakfast was held by the ACDP on Freedom Day with local pastors and Christian leaders joining together to pray for the challenges being experienced in KwaDukuza.

According to local ACDP councillor Pastor Nel Sewraj, the event was organised after they recognised the turbulent times endured by the KwaDukuza community in recent months.

“These include the severe drought and

consequent water crisis, violent and destructive protests in many places, the racial tension in the community, corruption in local government, landgrabbing, and the recent taxi killings locally.

“These problems are compounded by financial pressures on residents, increase of crime, prostitution, family breakdowns and drug syndicates operating in the area. In light of this bleak scenario, the ACDP decided to arrange a prayer breakfast for pastors and

Christian leaders to spiritually counter this onslaught using the power of prayer and intercession.”

A number of pastors joined together to pray for different challenges facing our community.

Speaking to the pastors Sewraj stated: “All hope is not lost for KwaDukuza.

God has entrusted the true authority over the city to you, his watchman in the city. You have power to turn the spiritual tide in our region. You have the power to arrest the decay in the region and secure a better future for KwaDukuza.

“After various incidents of unrest in Glenhills, Isithebe and other areas, the ACDP sought to host a prayer to counter these negative elements in our society. We recognise that politics itself is insufficient to arrest the decay of society. The prayer breakfast was a great success and good work was accomplished in the spirit. We appreciate the support of local pastors and churches in this endeavour.”

Two children and an adult were killed after the car they were travelling in crashed into paper rolls.

“On arrival, IPSS Medical Rescue found the young boy lying in the middle of the road in a critical condition.

“Advanced life support treated the boy on scene, intubating and ventilating him before rushing him to Stanger Hospital for further care.

“Three other occupants sustained serious injuries and were also transported to hospital.”

The exact details of the accident are still under investigation.

In another incident a taxi lost control on the N2 Blythedale off ramp on Friday afternoon and landed in the nearby bushes.

According to Meyrick 10 people sustain injuries, four serious and other minor.

They were transported to hospital for further care.

WO children and a woman were killed and several others were injured in road accidents along the North Coast during the long weekend.

On Sunday, the driver of a Fiat Palio lost control of the vehicle and hit large paper rolls that were being cleared from the road from an earlier incident.

According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedic Dylan Meyrick two children, aged five and two, were ejected on impact.

“On arrival paramedics found all six occupants were injured. One child was declared dead on arrival due to severe injuries. Another child was critically injured and paramedics began resuscitation on arrival. Shortly after resuscitation efforts the child died due to the extensive injuries sustained.”

This Superwater unit extracts moisture out of the humidity in the atmosphere to supply approximately 100 litres of fresh, clean water per day - a massive aid in helping with the shortage of valuable drinking water.

The large school of 1 000 pupils share only one tap which at times is unreliable and distributes dirty water.

Although it doesn’t supply enough clean water for the whole school, the cost-effective and sustainable unit goes a long way in supplementing their current water supply.

As one of the five KwaDukuza schools that follow the holistic MRP Foundation Schools Programme, pupils are already familiar with the importance of being kind to the environment.

Rainwater harvesting systems and ‘tippy-taps’ - simple devices made from plastic bottles for washing hands - are just some of the water conservation initiatives that the school enthusiastically adopts.

Joel Berger of Superwater unveiled the unit, which now stands proudly in the school ground, to teachers and pupils saying: “We feel honoured to be able to launch the project here and provide water solutions for drinkable water. If children aren’t drinking clean safe water they’re not learning to their best potential. We would ultimately love the children to have sufficient water for

Crime round up MOTORIST Isaac Dlamini pleaded guilty of speeding near the N2 Mandeni area.

Dlamini was doing 162km in a 120km zone.

Zinhle Thandeka Ngema (21) pleaded guilty to theft of two roll-on deodorants at a store in Sundumbili. Her previous convictions of possession of drugs and dangerous weapons, two counts of theft and escaping or attempt to escape from lawful custody, was the reason she was sent to prison. She was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment of which 12 months is suspended for five years at Nyoni Court.

In another case, Muse Sishi (39) pleaded guilty to possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was found with and unlicensed 9mm Norinco Pistol. Counts one and two were taken together for sentencing of 14 years imprisonment of which seven years imprisonment is suspended for five years.

Sandile Ngema (30) was released recently from prison and is heading back after being convicted at Nyoni Court for fraud at a store Sundumbili for R850.

His guilty plea saw him being sentenced 24 months imprisonment of which 12 months is suspended for five years.

Dr Rampersad overcomes tons of obstacles to achieve academic and entrepreneurial success DR Dhanesh Rampersad is proof that hard work pays off. He faced many hurdles early on in his career, but giving up was not an option.

Today this Stanger resident is one of a few automotive industry experts who has visited numerous automotive plants around the world.

“My early career was dampened by a lack of funds to pursue my career. This, however, was never a dead end to my perseverance, rather it was my first step to success. I pursued my career at the South African Air Force (SAAF), where I qualified as a mechanical technician,” said Dr Rampersad.

“Given the opportunity to become an officer in the SAAF, I strived to do my best and was commissioned

by President Nelson Mandela as a technical officer in the SAAF.” Dr Rampersad excelled in the mechanical field at this position. In 2000 he left the aircraft industry and joined the vibrant automotive component industry as an engineer.

“My growing interest in this industry enabled me to venture out by joining the original equipment manufacturer where my journey into identifying opportunities for the industry to improve its economic footprint and competitiveness propagated.”

In his 10-year journey in the automotive industry, Rampersad has worked for Toyota Boshoku SA and Volvo SA as a senior manager.

However, he was soon bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and decided to explore opportunities SA has to offer in the business environment.

He then joined the ILembe Consortium at the King Shaka International Airport as a private consultant.

Rampersad also joined the SA government in the KZN economic development department to diversify his

career.

“Working within the automotive sector in KZN allowed me to understand the constraints faced by the industry.”

Rampersad pursued his Master’s degree at UKZN while involved in the automotive component sector and completed it with distinctions.

“My first research undertaking at Master’s level allowed me to determine the economic impact localisation will have on the sustainability of the industry and future growth of the industry in KZN. The findings of this research was presented in the UAE and published in an international journal of contemporary management.

“My achievements at Master’s level awarded me a PHD at UKZN. My PHD research focused on SA global competitiveness in automotive component industry. I was privileged to visit the Bric countries, where my research was being carried out. A comparative analysis was done with Bric countries where conclusions were drawn on the economic sustainability of SA and the future of the industry by 2020.”

Rampersad is one of the few doctorate graduates who has researched the automotive component industry and the findings of this research has filtered back into the industry and government, which will be considered at the review of the Automotive Production Development Plan for 2016/17.

“My achievements have enabled me to be competitive both in the engineering sector as well as the aerospace industry.”

Today this highly accomplished doctor is the executive director of Nzamaramps Group of Companies that focuses on engineering, construction and automotive consultancy. He was also appointed as the CEO of Zodiac Aerospace SA.

“As my contribution to academia, I have served as an external examiner and supervisor on Master’s research as well as a moderator and examiner to undergraduates and post-graduate programmes, at UKZN and Mancosa.”

The 44-year-old Stanger resident says he owes his success in life to God and his family.

“Putting God first in my life has unfolded the plans He has for me. God has blessed me and all honour and praise belongs to God alone.”

Diabetes is not a choice Kalisha Naicker HELLO,my name is Kalisha and I am diabetic.

Why do I introduce myself this way?

Well, it is because of all the pity statements and “looks” I get when I am out

with friends and have to take my insulin ‘shot’ before my meal.

People at other tables gasp in horror when they see the insulin pen in my hand (not that I ‘shoot up’ in front of them), others walk up to me and say the dumbest things, such as, “Shame, are you diabetic? Do you eat a lot of sweet stuff? or “Have you tried drinking lots of water so your sugar levels decrease?”

Not forgetting the stares I get when I reveal “my status” and people think I am contagious.

I did not choose the illness - it is more like the illness chose me. Howev-

er, I am learning to live with it and feel that our community needs to be educated on how to deal with it.

Let me educate some of you on what diabetes really is.

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), such as myself, either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both.

There is also gestational diabetes, which affects pregnant females. Some women have very high levels of glu-

cose in their blood and their body is unable to produce enough insulin to transport all the glucose into their cells, resulting in progressively rising levels of glucose. This is also treated by medication and usually cures itself after pregnancy is over.

Hence all types of diabetes are treatable. Diabetes Type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, however, some people have managed to get rid of their symptoms without medication, through a combination of exercise, diet and body weight control.

Open letter to President Jacob Zuma from an ordinary citizen Mr President, I was tempted to say “Dear Mr President”….but I won’t because there is no time for niceties and courtesy in this hour - and I will get to the point quickly.

For the record I am a very ordinary citizen of KwaDukuza and hold no of-

fice like the many noble leaders that assembled at Constitution Hill on 6 April 2016 to make statements on the matter of your presidency.

History is going to judge you and the once noble ANC - the same ANC that was in the forefront of the liberation struggle and brought a democratic dispensation for our nation. I am still of the opinion that there are many “good men” of con-

science in the ANC that are silent and allowing “evil” to prosper; for it has been rightly said “that evil prospers where good men remain silent”.

How do you sleep Mr President? (if at all you do). Your track record as president speaks for itself. Your term in office has been punctuated by one bungle after another and you have limped from one controversy to another: charges of rape; the Nkandla debacle and your association with the Gupta family to name a few. May I remind you Mr President that you are RSA’s number one citizen. Would you blame me, as an ordinary citizen, for concluding that you have not carried yourself with the dignity and character that the high office demands. From your conduct and statements I get the impression that you relish being in the centre of all these accusations and controversies.

Mr President you have tarnished the image of that noble office and my sympathy lies with the future incumbent who has to restore the image of that office. Sadly I will have to say I have lost all respect for you as president and my prayer is that the sooner you go, the better.

Be reminded that millions of South Africans are living in poverty; often homeless and jobless. Your actions have worsened the economic outlook and billions have been lost through your ineptitude and grafting. How can you justify the opulence and luxury that you want to live in when the country weeps.

JYOTHI LALDAS MEMBERS of the KwaDukuza Protective Workshop, situated at the Mdoniville Community Hall, were treated to an outing to Ushaka Marine World recently.

The workshop, which is run by the Association for Persons with Disabilities - KwaZulu-Natal (APDKZN), sees 12 persons with disabilities attending daily.

The attendees were treated to a fun day and sumptuous meals at Ushaka.

APD wishes to thank all sponsors who contributed towards the success of the event.

Persons with disabilities often experience difficulties in seeking employment in the open labour market so the protective workshop keeps them gainfully occupied with

contract work, skills training and empowerment programmes.

The association offers social work services, counselling, application for assistive devices eg. wheelchairs, disability grant and ID applications, institutional care applications, special schools/mainstream schooling placements, protective workshop and placement into the open labour market to persons with disabilities.

The association appeals to the community and all business houses to provide support and assistance in terms of sponsorship and collection of old clothing in an effort to make their programmes a success.

AST week the Hour of Code, a movement that aims to educate more than 100 000 students in computer science for free, was launched by the Sappi KwaDukuza Resource Centre in partnership with Dell Development Fund and the Change the World Trust.

The launch was attended by more than 30 teachers, officials from the Department of Basic Education and an estimated 120 students.

IT facilitator and projects co-ordina-

tor Sabelo Gumede said teachers welcomed the programme as it would offer students an opportunity to gain more skills without disrupting their current teaching schedule.

“The KwaDukuza Resource Centre fully endorses the Hour of Code and understands the value of computer science education, and as such calls on teachers and schools to collaborate with and co-ordinate efforts to introduce youth to computer science, making available their facilities and facilitators, to accommodate training,” said Gumede.

He said the Change the World Trust aims to enlist 10 000 young people across South Africa into this programme before the end of 2016.

“The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in more than 180 countries. This programme aims to introduce students to computer science concepts and languages in the most accessible and innovative way known to man. It is user friendly and can be adopted by students in grade 5,” he said.

The programme was aimed at celebrating the unconditional support and warmth that foster parents bring to the lives of the children in their care.

According to senior social work manager, Penny Dhaver many children are cared for by foster parents and so it is important that their roles be recognised.

“They need to be encouraged to continue being their pillar of strength. The programme was interactive. The foster parents interacted well with Ms G. Gumede from SASSA who provided them with vast information including foster

S Mother’s Day approaches, Fever thought it would be fitting to give the stage to those who really know what it means to be a mother.

Tania has been a daughter, a pet owner, a sister, a friend, a wife and a mother. She has three children under the age of three, a very successful blog and most importantly, a sense of humour.

“This year will be my third Mother’s Day and we made three of them in this space of time (okay, two of them did arrive at the same time).

“Last year our twins were a mere two months old and as much as I intellectually try to ignore the whole thing, it was great to get: • a cup of tea I didn’t make; • a gift; and • 15 minutes to myself This year all I want is to take my family somewhere quiet for Mother’s Day and not share them with anyone. “Somewhere by the sea where they can play in the neverending sandpit and run to their hearts’ content. Where the sound of the sea is their lullaby and I can smell it in their hair when I hold them.

“Most importantly, I want the little buggers to pass out at night and

give me the best Mother’s Day gift of all - an uninterrupted night’s sleep.”

Belinda is mom to seven-yearold Rhiannon, a dedicated blogger, oh, and she totally forgot to get married.

“Being a single mother has many challenges and the one I find most depressing is that there is no partner to egg your offspring on to remember Mother’s Day. So generally I get a badly drawn heart and maybe a chocolate, and that’s it.

Not that I am complaining mind you. Mother’s Day is every day - it’s in the little details.

“Details like laughing with my daughter, she has an amazing sense of humour.

“I love being woken up by one word being whispered in my ear: “Lasaaaagne.” I eventually worked out she’d clearly been watching Garfield one too many times.

“Or being able to use the fact that I have a child as an excuse not to go out nor do something I don’t really want to do. I love being home and hate going out. It’s really cool that I have an excuse now - ‘sorry, no baby sitter’.

“Or letting decorating my daughter’s bedroom become my obsession. I think it stems from a thwarted desire to have a lovely princess bedroom when I was little.

“Her room is gorgeous and a never-ending project. Although I must admit, the extreme ‘pinkness’

Loren Stow is a photographer and blogger, but more important, mother to Malakai, a little boy born with Down Syndrome, who has come with a message.

“As my first Mother’s Day approaches I can think only of how my son has taught me in eight months what I couldn’t learn in 28 years by myself - that life cannot be planned.

That it is only this moment that counts. That acceptance is the key to freedom and love.

“Malakai decided to arrive on 08/08/08, a rather interesting date. Shortly after birth, he was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. We were devastated, torn apart, confused and full of fear of the unknown.

“About a month after Malakai was born I remember burping him after a feed and he looked up at me and held my gaze with his bluegrey eyes.

“I knew instantly that he was a wise soul, he had chosen his path in life and he had chosen me to walk the path with him. I could no longer feel fear or sadness, because I was filled with the knowing that he would be okay, I would be okay and that this would be a beautiful journey.

“This Mother’s Day, as a family we will be spending a divine week in my favourite part of the world Clarens in the Free State.”

The new Tiguan, which will be launched in South Africa towards the end of 2016, kicks off the comprehensive SUV offensive by Volkswagen. It is the first Volkswagen Sport Utility Vehicle to be based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB), and it sets new standards in design, comfort and functionality.

This however does not compromise its off-road capabilities which have been enhanced with a rugged all-wheel drive system that includes premium class technology for use on and off the highway.

The new Tiguan has been receiving positive reviews from the

international media.

In the latest comparative test conducted by the largest motoring magazine in Germany, Auto Motor und Sport, the new Tiguan was chosen as the best SUV in its segment against its direct competitors. Recently, Auto Bild Allrad, Europe’s largest magazine for offroad vehicles, announced the new Tiguan as the 2016 “All-wheel Car of the Year”.

The new Tiguan also won the “2016 Design Trophy” in the SUV category from Auto Zeitung, German’s special interest magazine.

ORD Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) has added two more awards to its burgeoning trophy cabinet with the new Ford Ranger and the new Ford Everest being voted the top vehicles in their respective segments by Drive Out-Weg- Ry in its 2016 4x4 of the Year Awards.

“As one of South Africa’s biggest 4x4 and overlanding magazines, the publication has a large following amongst off-road enthusiasts, and it is fantastic for two of our most important new models to dominate the Double Cab and SUV categories in its 2016 4x4 of the Year awards,” says Tracey Delate, general marketing manager, FMCSA. The Ford Ranger 3.2 TDCi XLT won the Double Cab of the Year title. The new Ranger was launched in October last year, boasting a fresh new design, a sophisticated all-new interior with SYNC®2 and an 8-inch touchscreen display, advanced Electric Power As-

sisted Steering, improved quality and refinement, as well as enhanced fuel economy.

While the Ranger has topped the highly competitive overall light commercial vehicle sales on three occasions over the past six months, and was the top-seller for six out of 12 months last year, it has dominated the popular double cab sector since 2014.

“We know that the local double-cab 4x4 market is a hotly contested one, which makes the Ranger’s dominance even more remarkable,” said Jaco Kirsten, editor of Drive Out / WegRy. “The Ranger’s 3.2 litre Duratorq engine has already proved itself, and while the refreshed engine still develops the same amount of power as before, fuel consumption is improved.

Preston Sporting beat defending champions Sunbrook DETERMINATION and perseverance on Thursday night saw the new look Preston Sporting defeating their more fancied opponents, Sunbrook in two straight sets.

The lethal combinations of Gerhard Nagiah and Liam Luke proved to be tops for Preston.

To compound Sunbrooks woes, excellent all round effort were displayed from Stephen Singh and Kaylin Naidoo. The set was won 2520 to Preston Sporting.

In the second set the Stanger Heights based team Sunbrook came on court all fired up. Excellent centre attack from Leon and good cover work from Aaron Marie saw Sunbrook taking the lead 19-14.

Preston Sporting’s Chris Naidoo called a time out and his team talk saw the Preston lads being stabilised and once again producing a remarkable performance.

Excellent blocking from Montel Govender and superb court cover work by Prayen saw Preston Sporting winning the second set and game 25-22.

Preston Sporting’s Rodrick Naidoo congratulated the boys and stated that training, discipline and determination of the players contributed to the victory.

In other matches in the Eze Electrical Premier League, a revamped KSST won in two straight sets over Warrior Sport 25-20, 25-20.

Team selection and decisive changes ensured victory for KSST. Grove End demolished Randsons in two straight sets 25-19 and 25-23.

Grove End’s Vinnay performed brilliantly with unstoppable attacks.

A little resilience from the Randsons outfit was shown, with some good attacking from Tin Boy but Grove End proved to be the team of the night.

Other matches in the Division One Natdale League saw Cool Leaders defeating Frendz 2520 and 25-20. Superb spiking from Robin and Indes of Cool Leader helped their team to a good win.
