One dead, several injured in accidents THERE were a number or road accidents on the South Coast over the past few days.

One person died and a woman was seriously injured in a rollover accident on Edward Avenue in Uvongo on Sunday evening. Kwazulu Private Ambulance paramedics and with tow truck operators, security services and provincial ambulance conducted CPR on the man, but their efforts were in vain.

The woman was stabilised and transported to hospital by Kwazulu Private Ambulance. It appears that the vehicle left the road, hit a tree and came to a

standstill against a building on its roof.

SAPS is investigating.

On Tuesday, there was a collision between a taxi and a car along Marine drive Margate on Tuesday evening.

One person was treated for minor injuries while two others escaped with no injuries.

In Umzumbe, 19 people were injured in crash involving a taxi, a car and a bakkie in Umzumbe on Monday morning.

Netcare 911 paramedics responded to the collision.

Reports from the scene indicate that the three vehicles collided causing the taxi to veer off the road and overturn.

“Its twisted frame coming to rest on its side balancing on the Armco barriers,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

“Medics found that 19 people sustained injuries, one seriously while 18 escaped with minor injuries,” he added.

ANDOM visits to criminal offenders’ homes in the urban areas surrounding Port Shepstone are carried out at any given time to see if probationers and parolees are complying with their sentencing conditions.

On Thursday, a team from Port Shepstone Correctional Services visited 22 homes, from Pumula to Port Edward.

This specific check was for offenders living in urban areas only because offenders living in rural areas are checked daily due to the fact that there are over 500.

“There is no excuse for any of these offenders not to comply to their sentence conditions. They have free hours to utilise as their leisure time,” said Warrant Officer Wiseman Nomdlange, head of monitoring for Port Shepstone Correctional Services.

Only those who commit petty crimes such as house robberies, theft, possession of drugs, and the like, are given the chance to serve a sentence from home.

Wiseman added that some of these offenders are remorseful and want to start a new life.

“Society doesn’t always accept them back and some revert to their old lives of crime. We would like communities to work with us and inform us of any incidents.”

A 26-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to an effective 15 years behind bars at the Scottburgh Regional Court last week.

Senzo Banelo Ngcongo (26), robbed and raped an 18-year-old woman in Kenterton on the South Coast.

The complainant was walking to a

bus stop when Ngcongo grabbed her and took her into a sugar-cane field.

He took her cellphone and money and raped her before fleeing.

During the trial he pleaded not guilty and disputed the DNA evidence presented to the court by Regional Court Prosecutor Christelle Rossouw.

Rossouw led the evidence of the

House­breaker, failed rapist gets 20 years

DURING the night of 16 November, 2014, a house in Amandawe was burgled while the owner was at work. When he returned the next day he found his home theatre system, DVD player, flash drive, two remote controls and a Nike bag had been stolen.

Forensic evidence revealed that the perpetrator was Thabiso Ngcobo (21), and further investigations revealed he was linked to other cases.

On 28 July, Ngcobo appeared in the Scottburgh Regional Court where he was convicted for the crimes.

Ngcobo was arrested on 12 May, 2015 and the stolen property which

he had sold to a woman in Amahlongwa, was recovered.

While Ngcobo was being sought by police for the burglary, he committed other crimes.

On 1 April, 2015 at 7pm, a 54year-old woman was returning from a shopping mall when she was accosted by Ngcobo on the corner of Galway and Arbuthnot streets, Scottburgh.

She tried to run away, but he managed to catch her, threatened her with a broken bottle and demanded money and her cellphone.

After taking her cellphone he undressed her and attempted to rape her. She resisted and he assaulted and stabbed her in the face and

body with the broken bottle.

Ngcobo released her and fled when he heard someone call out his name. The woman, drenched in blood and wearing only a T-shirt, ran to her employer’s flat for help.

Ngcobo had already been arrested in the housebreaking case and was in police custody when the woman positively identified him at an identity parade.

He was found guilty of housebreaking, aggravated robbery and attempted rape and was sentenced to five years’ for housebreaking, 10 years’ for robbery and five years’ for attempted rape.

The attempted rape sentence is to run concurrently with the rob-

bery.

Both cases were investigated by Detective Constable Dillon Khamisa of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service. Major General Agnes Nxamagele, the Ugu Cluster Commander commended Constable Khamisa for the excellent investigation and professional presentation of the case docket for trial.

“I am pleased with the outcome of the case, which was as a result thorough investigation. The investigating officer has worked closely with the public prosecutor to ensure a successful prosecution and I urge him to continue with this high standard of investigation,” said General Nxamagele. - Supplied.

Marburg Primary mourns ‘TK’ T

HE Marburg community is saddened by the death of Thangavaloo Kisten Govender, fondly known as “TK”.

Govender died in the early hours of Saturday morning on 23 July.

His death has come as a shock to Marburg Primary School, the Department of Education and the community.

He was well known and liked by the stakeholders he served.

Govender took ill a few years

ago and had many health challenges, but showed professionalism, commitment and a love for his work.

He qualified as a teacher at Transvaal College of Education in 1983 and was active in the sporting field and someone who had a zest for life.

He taught at Singh’s Primary School in Germiston in 1984 for three years before making his way to Braemar Primary in 1987.

The newly built Marburg Primary School became his new place of employment on 15 January, 1990.

Govender was very serious and passionate about his teaching.

He carried out his work in a business-like fashion and his record books indicated a high level of preparation and planning.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said at about 6am SAPS received a call about the body.

“The Port Shepstone Search and Rescue members found the body with stab wounds on the back and chest

and always showed empathy towards them and had their welfare at heart.

One of the additional duties, which stood out clearly, was his involvement in the welfare committee, which took care of the needs of disadvantaged children.

Govender worked closely with Bread of Heaven for the delivery of sandwiches to pupils. One thing that touched everyone’s heart, was his caring attitude to ensure that hungry pupils would receive a sandwich at break.

At times he would also go the extra mile to obtain uniforms and shoes for pupils.

He served Marburg Primary for 25 years and the Department of Education for 32 years.

Govender was a gentle and jovial person with respect and good personality. He was a firm, but sympathetic teacher who worked hard in the intermediate phase.

He was noted for being meticulous in every task he completed. He was a seasoned teacher and the wealth of experience he acquired over the years cannot be easily replaced.

His absence will be sorely missed by the pupils, staff and parents of Marburg.

ORE than 100 women from the mid-South Coast converged on the Park Rynie beach campsite on Women’s Day to listen to talks by fellow women and participate in a Women’s Day Zumba beach bash.

Mildred Ngcobo of the GJ. Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh regularly deals with victims of crime at the hospital trauma centre and stressed the importance of reporting all instances of rape and sexual offences and introduced a young rape survivor whose story touched the hearts of all.

Johanna Tait, a fitness instructor, spoke on the benefits of exercising and keeping fit and other matters relevant to Women’s Day. Shereen Paul and her team from Ultimate Dance Fitness gave the women a Zumba beach workout, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

She organised the event and thanked all who made it such a huge success.

Funds raised at the event are to be donated to the Scottburgh SAPS victim-friendly facility that offers support to victims of domestic vio-

lence and sexual or other forms of abuse.

A second beneficiary of a portion of the funds raised is the Jes Foord Foundation in Durban. The foundation offers advice, counselling and support to victims of abuse and is instrumental in working with various institutions, like the SAPS, to set up victim-friendly facilities.

The event was a resounding success and the respectable amount raised will be shared by both beneficiaries for a noble cause.

Hospital offers free screening FEVER 9 18 August 2016

N recognition of Women’s Month, Port Shepstone Regional Hospital offered free health screening to more than 30 women at Illovo Sugar last Thursday.

Hospital spokesperson Phumza Morai said this was done in recognition of women who go through a lot of stress as they strive to keep their families together.

The women were screened for blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index, voluntary counselling and testing, pap smear, family planning, tuberculosis and eye screening. “The nursing team on the campaign checked the women’s coping skills at work and at home in order to identify any risk factors,” said Morai.

Three women were referred for mental health management, nine were referred for family planning and nine pap smears were done.

ORE than 60 youths from all over the South Coast gathered at the Uvongo Community Hall on Saturday to audition for an upcoming educational comedy that will be shooting locally in a few weeks.

The auditions were organised by ArtWay Productions, in partnership

with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.

Phumlani Khusi of ArtWay Productions, originally from Gcilima, said he was excited about the project.

“The municipality partnered with Thulani Bhengu from Gamalakhe and me to shoot the comedy. The storyline will be educational, creating awareness about the role of political leadership, councillors and their responsibilities,” said Khusi.

He said they came up with the idea

of the comedy following many misconceptions about the duties of councillors.

The adjudication panel for the audition comprised Gamalakhe councillor Phumlani Gumbi, actress Nompilo Maphumulo, who plays Nosipho Xulu on SABC 1 drama Uzalo, Andile Mxaka, “Fezile” from Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya, Simon April, Lloyd Monyakane and Khulekani Zulu.

Sheppie resident in Bollywood film PRECIOUS GUMEDE >>precious.gumede@media24.com PORT Shepstone resident, 20-year-old Lesley Pillay, was recently given a role in a Bollywood film, Keeping Up With the Kandasamys, that will be released in March 2017.

The film is directed by Jayan Moodley and also features comedian Jaloshini Naidoo, known by her stage name, “Aunty Rumba”.

Pillay said he saw a post by Rory Booth on Facebook asking for extras for the movie a few weeks ago.

The movie is a romantic Bollywood comedy set in Chatsworth in Durban.

“The movie is about two women, who are neighbours. Initially they dislike each other, but are put in a predicament when their children fall in love with each other,” said Pillay.

“I was honoured to be in the film, even just as an extra.

“Auditions took place at North Beach in Durban where I got to meet actors and actresses who have been seen on our screens,” said Pillay.

Pillay met Mishka Maharaj, known for her role in Snake Park, which played on SABC3. She also features in commercials.

“I met Karghill Bagwandeen from Eastern Mosaic and Neil Govender, a radio presenter,” said Pillay.

HE Department of Correctional Services (DCS) commemorated Women’s Day at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre last Thurs-

day.

The guest speaker was Pastor Lindiwe Shozi.

DCS officers and regional and area commissioners gathered and discussed the importance of women in their field.

A number of elderly female citizens were also invited by Gamalakhe councillor Phumlani Gumbi to celebrate their achievements and accomplishments as veterans of this country and day in particular.

Acting Deputy Regional Commissioner Bhuthi Mchunu, who welcomed guests, said the day is to celebrate women, Mchunu said when he started at DCS there were no black females.

“When I started working for this department there were no black females in the profession and today we can see there had been transformation and we see a number of women [in our field]. Today we are here to salute you,” he said.

Ngcobo said women should always take charge and spend quality time alone to appreciate who they are.

Entertainment included groups and DCS officials who sang songs of praise to women.

In the past she said, being a black woman in this profession was no child’s play.

She spoke of her days as a black warden and how she was discriminated against, but survived.

“If a black female DCS officer fell pregnant back in the day they were told to submit their husband’s particulars for them to be screened before being allowed to keep your job. Those with no husbands were fired and had to reapply for their jobs after giving birth - we survived all of that.”

DCS KZN handed over blankets to the elderly women of Gamalakhe as a gift from inmates for Women’s Day.

She said this specific incubator is among many others and will focus on mixed sectors that will enable beneficiaries to create sustainable businesses.

TVET principal Dr Sipho Nzimande explained the role of the college in youth enterprise and said the centre will turn ambition into reality. He said the youth need to be mentoredto they can achieve their goals in the business industry.

Nzimande said the college will work hard in closing the unemploy-

ment gap in the community.

Ugu District Municipality management assured stakeholders that the municipality will partner with the college ensuring that incubator graduates get assistance from local economic development offices.

Seda CEO, Mandisa Tshikwatamba, said she was pleased to see that the incubatees from the college have already started addressing and working on solutions to problems submitted by the industry.

Tshikwatamba encouraged the college to duplicate the programme in its other campuses.

HE Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda), Singatha, Esayidi TVET incubatees and local SMMEs gathered at Esayidi TVET College Port Shepstone campus in Oslo Beach for the official launch of the Esayidi Rapid Incubator and Centre last Friday.

The incubator is aimed at developing and training existing and emerging small business enterprises within the college, and is part of Singatha business programme.

Nosipho Khonkwane, Seda executive member, said the aim is to promote the mortality rate of KZN SMMEs. Seda and stakeholders researched in international countries and adopted strategies that will assist with the programme.

Municipality restores water supply systems FRANCE ZAMA SENIOR MANAGER MAYORALTY AND COMMUNICATION THE Ugu District Municipality has restored the water supply in affected areas in Hibiscus Coast following the total shutdown of Bhobhoyi Reservoir on Thursday.

After corrective measures by mu-

nicipal technicians around the clock, we also ensured the recovery of reservoir levels, resuming normal supply

by Sunday evening.

We have received some complaints from Marburg Extension 3 that was still experiencing an intermittent water supply - this problem has also since been resolved. The Murchison Hospital reservoir, which was badly affected, has also recovered and the system is back online.

The Gamalakhe area supply took longer to resolve due to excessive air in the system, but normal supply has also been reinstated.

We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused during this

time. It is our view, as the municipality, that water is life and as a caring water services authority, we shall continue to provide our communities with this basic right.

Scams, spams and other things VALENE GOVENDER I HAVE won the lottery in unknown countries, received inheritances from distant relatives in the UK and have won tons of SMS competitions I have never entered.

I am officially a “scam and spam” billionaire. I receive at least one SMS a month informing me that I have won R250 000 in a washing powder draw.

I have at least five emails from “relatives” in the UK asking me for banking details as I have inherited one million pounds, and I have also won lotteries in countries I have never heard of.

Most of these emails and SMSes come with a link. When you click on the link it takes you to a foreign website and your information is being downloaded by scammers.

People have lost airtime and money from their bank accounts believing these messages to be true. It surprises me that people think they can win competitions they never entered.

I am also surprised that people think they can become rich overnight. I recently read a story about a woman who trusted a “spiritual heal-

er” with R50 000. She was told to put the money in a suitcase and bury it somewhere and to her surprise (really?) the money was stolen the next morning. The man, being the magician that he is, disappeared and could not be reached.

She opened a case at the police station, but I would hate to be the investigating officer on a case like this.

In my quest to understand the thinking behind making a decision to trust an unbelievable mission, I ask the following questions …

Firstly, if you have R50 000 lying around, why not talk to a legitimate source about investments? Why would you give it to a “suitcase man” and bury your hard-earned cash?

Secondly, if that man could turn R50 000 into R100 000, why is he not the richest man on Earth by now?

Thirdly, is desperation to make a quick buck shadowing common sense?

Another scheme-making headlines this year is a “money sharing” one where residents “lend” money to each other while earning ridiculous interest rates on the initial sum

pledged.

There is one scam (the name escapes me, but a case was reported) where you pledge R1 000 and the next day you receive R1 500.

I do not understand how this works, but this should be screaming “scam”the minute you read about the returns.

To be honest, when investigating one of these schemes I signed up and wanted to see why people are so naive. During this time I chatted to a woman who was making so much money from one of these schemes that she quit her job and was earning R15 000 a month while being a stayat-home mom.

The prospect of becoming rich overnight scared me to the point that I left that scheme as I am not sure what I would do with all that money.

Also I work way too hard to be taking a chance with my salary.

I do understand that poverty and desperation plays a big role in people making foolish decisions, but surely if you have spare money there are other things you can do with it.

Face to face, or ‘in the air’ TODAY’S tourism transactions are ever becoming internet- based. The customer prospect looks on a website to identify where to stay or what package to purchase and then often books and pays directly with the product or with an e-agent.

If one considers the boom in things like Uber for transportation or AirBNB for accommodation a whole new dimension to competitive pricing and services becomes evident.

It is clear that tourism and leisurereliant businesses, which do not embrace the new communications and transaction technologies, may well stumble at the opportunity starting blocks and as such we advise our tourism members to expand their marketing and business reach by getting into that sphere of services marketing.

This does not mean that the face to face engagement is obsolete. At the many promotional expositions we attend we find that show attendees do wish to speak to the product owner to get a sense of the integrity and personality not only of the tourism product, but also who their host may be.

Furthermore, in a world saturated with options I am of the belief that agents selling experiences and tourism services have to get firsthand knowledge of a destination and the enterprises within it. For this reason, we continue to host these market influencers via familiarisation trips down here.

Either way, a prudent tourism practitioner will continue to adopt both options in addition to maintaining strong direct relations with existing and past clients.

After all word of mouth is still be biggest seller of recurring and new business in the hospitality sector - that is why websites like Trip Advisor are such an important reference tool for potential clients.

Tourism is a people-orientated industry so I do not foresee “robohosts” replacing the warmness that our South Coast hospitality fraternity imbues - not in my lifetime anyway.

We must guide our tongues IN this world, including in South Africa, we have one race ­ the human race. Any varia­ tion in pigmentation or distinctions in hair or height are irrelevant.

For many in South Africa the only differ­ entiation are the land dispossessors and the dispossessed.

This is a painful history that must be ac­ knowledged and addressed as a matter of priority for the sake of peace and stability.

A solution acceptable to all must be found and we need wise people to contribute to the matter.

For convenience, the world community

identifies each other by country of origin.

Here we froth at the mouth, misdirecting our energies by insulting each other in iden­ tifying ourselves by incorrect colours.

It is beyond one’s comprehension that we spend so much time systematically ex­ cluding one another from humanity by us­ ing colours and infuriating one another in the process.

We are undermining ourselves by insult­ ing each other.

We must guide our tongues.

Uvongo Drive lacks speed humps I HAVE lived in Uvongo Drive for 13 years and have witnessed, on a daily basis, numerous speedsters driving along this road (speed limit is 60km/ h) with absolutely no regard to the fact that it is a residential area with children and animals around.

A petition was signed two years ago for speed humps to be installed but nothing has happened apart from two lines being painted on the road by

the municipality, marking for one lot of speed humps to be installed.

This is useless as Uvongo Drive is long and needs at least three speed humps. Sadly, while trying to take my dog for a peaceful walk, a speedster came along. There were monkeys playing and one baby ventured into the road and was hit by the car which never even stopped or slowed down.

A week and a half ago we went fishing in Park Rynie and the campsite has boom gates you have to pay R30 for the day. The stairs past the lifesavers building is flooded and a lifeguard said there was no water in the taps because they have a burst pipe.

Guess what, we went there a few days ago and that water is still streaming down the stairs. What is the municipality going to do to get their staff to be vigilant and caring and why don’t their staff report these things?

Look into traffic light timing WOULD the person who programmes traffic lights please look into the ones on the corner of Marine Drive and Abbingdon Road in Umtentweni.

The green light needs to be set for “go’” for at least 20 seconds as this would then give more cars time to cross or turn into Marine Drive.

Currently, it lasts for only 7.8 seconds, which is not enough time for old people like me to make a move.

This woman was prepared to risk her life to vote for the person she wanted to be her Ward councillor. Whether the danger was real or not is irrelevant as it was real to her.

Sadly I lost the Ward by 69 votes and I know there were a lot of people with excellent reasons for not being able to vote, but there were also those who should think about that elderly lady and what she was prepared to suffer in order to vote.

THE letter by ‘Atheist’ refers (“Archaic belies and brainwashing”, 11 August).

Parents would prefer that their offspring meet a prospective partner and/or spouse in a “house of God” rather than in a bar.

Religion has provided believers with a code of conduct and ethics. Even though a child may be obliged to observe the code of conduct, and owing to fear of punishment, the ends justify the means. Eventually, when raised in a lawful environment, there is the acknowledgement and practice of rules in a crime-free society.

Monotheism and polytheism teach respect towards parents, teachers and elders, but there is no ancestor worship among Eastern or Western cultures. Religion imposes self-discipline and introspection. It imparts other aspects, spiritual and hygienic, for the improvement of life – cleanliness (prior to prayer), dietary control (fasts), training of the brain (learning tractates by rote), the ability to reason (exegesis), compassion and the dispensing of charity.

By the acceptance of divine intervention (as the human brain cannot encompass all understanding), consolation reduces suffering, when tragedy strikes e.g. the death of a loved one.

In a country where faith prevails, corruption and crime rates are low.

LKE nou en dan beleef elke mens ‘n geleentheid waar hy of sy skielik jonger voel, deur ‘n golf nostalgie uit die verlede getref word en tergelykertyd ‘n lewenswaarheid herontdek. Dit het voorverlede Sondag met die uwe gebeur tydens die Seepkiskar-wedrenne op die renbaan van Dezzi Gutzeit.

Talle deelnemers het ooglopend baie moeite gedoen het met die ontwerpe van hul seepkiskarre, oftewel kaskarre. Die goed-ontwerpte karre, mooi en met gesofistikeerde remstelsels, was die vinnigste en meesal eerste oor die wenstreep. Mooi om na te kyk en te bewonder, maar sonder iets baie belangrik. Iemand wat ‘n ou motor het sal presies weet wat dit beteken.

Het jou voertuig ‘siel’? jy net die sleutel te draai. Wanneer daardie plat viersilinder-enjintjie begin luier, begin iets met jou praat. Sy “siel”. Ry met hom op die lang pad terwyl almal by jou verby vlieg en die kragbron gelukkig in sy stert sing, met die klein voorvenstertjie oop na agter gedraai as “lugreëling”, en die petrolwyser heen en weer saam swaai met die petrol in die tenk, dan voel jy die ‘siel’ soos ‘n spook by jou. Iets wat nog nooit met my in ‘n moderne BMW, Mercedes of wat ookal gebeur het nie.

By die outydse kaskarre was dit Saterdag dieselfde. Die nostalgie het my oorval want dit was presies hoe ons die karre as kinders gebou het. Met “siel”.‘n Houtkas op ‘n lang stuk hout, met ‘n korter stuk aan die voorkant vasgebout en growwe stukke tou om mee te stuur. Klein wielietjies, want destyds was fietswiele feitlik onbekombaar en in elk geval te duur.

Hierdie wieletjies en hul aste was meesal afkomstig van ou kinderwaentjies, en indien jou eie kinderwaentjie nie meer bestaan het nie of nog te bruikbaar was, het jy op die ashope rondgesnuffel vir ou kinderwaentjie-wiele. Kaskarwiele was destyds hul gewig in goud werd, en al het jy verskillende soorte wiele gehad, het dit nie saak gemaak nie, solank die

Dit het my self laat terugdink. Pottie is heelwat ouer as ek, en ek onthou tydens my studentedae in Johannesburg was daar maar min watergate soos ons hulle vandag ken. Die meeste was in hotelle, en dis waar ons gekuier het. Vandag het ons oral “pubs”, kyk maar in die groot stede, en as hulle nie verskeie groot televisieskerms op strategiese plekke, billike pryse en lekker maaltye het nie, sukkel hulle om te bestaan.

Ewenwel, ons het op ‘n manier bygebly, en was verlede Saterdag weer lekker vol mense … die meeste van hulle “regulars”, met enkele besoekers. Twee op vakansie uit Tshwane, en hulle het met pyngesigte gesit en kyk hoe die Cheetahs die trots van Pretoria oprol, terwyl ekself en Pottie lekker gevoel het oor die Sharks (die vorige aand) en Goue Leeus

voorste twee wiele en die agterste twee dieselfde grootte was. Ons het wiele uitgeruil totdat jy so na aan die ideaal as moontlik gekom het. Remme? Net sissies het remme probeer aanbring.

stilstand geruk is. Dikwels het ‘n wiel afgeval omdat die stopspyker teen die wasser aan die einde van die as nie ver genoeg omgebuig was nie, en moes ma bloeiende elmboë met Dettol dokter.

Saterdag was my ondersteuning en oë op hierdie basiese kaskarre. Van hulle is ooglopend deur die jong bestu-

se vertonings. Hoewel daar verskillende emosies was, was almal eensgesind oor Pottie se voorspelling dat die Lions weer alles voor hulle gaan platvee: dis heeltemal te voortydig.

Iets wat groot bespreking uitgelok het, was oud-Springbokkaptein John Smit se erkennings in ‘n koerant dat hy verskeie foute gemaak het tydens sy amper drie hoofbestuursjare by die Sharks, dat hy heeltemal te onervare was, dat hy die John Plumtree-episode swak gehanteer het, en dat hy en Jake White ‘n uitval gehad het.

Al hierdie dinge was tog redelik voorspelbaar, of hoe? Hoewel Smit ‘n fantastiese mens is en goeie leier op die veld was, met sy aanstelling self gesê het hy het geen sake- of bestuursondervinding nie, en talle kenners vrae hieroor gevra het, is hy nietemin aangestel. Is dit toevallig dat die unie-president Graham Mackenzie enkele dae na Smit se erkennings ook besluit het ‘om meer aandag aan sy sakebelange te gee?’

Ewenwel, ons glimlag kom van een van die Blou Bulmanne van Pretoria, Bart Naude. Die vliegtuig het pas opgestyg. ‘n Manlike passasier sit en byt sy vingernaels, en vee gereeld sweet van sy voorkop af. Die bekommerde lugwaardin vra of sy hom iets van die kroeg af kan kry om hom te kalmeer.

Hy knik instemmend. Hy sluk die drankie vinnig af. Tien minute later bewe hy steeds, en kry hy nog ‘n drankie. ‘n Half-uur later sien die lugwaardin die man bewe nog en huil saggies.

“Ag siestog meneer, ek het nog nooit iemand gesien wat so bang is vir vlieg nie.”

“Poplap,” kom die antwoord, “ek is nie bang vir vlieg nie. Ek probeer ophou drink.”

Hiermee word nie net geloofsvertwyfeling bedoel nie.

Mens kan twyfel aan die betroubaarheid van ‘n lugredery se vliegtuie, veral na ‘n reeks ongelukke. Jy kan twyfel aan jou eie vermoëns, veral as jy baie negatiewe terugvoer van mense ontvang het.

Daar word self gepraat van twyfel wat aan jou knaag. Die uitdrukking laat mens nogal dink aan ‘n rot wat aan jou vreet.

Dis egter ‘n goeie beskrywing van wat twyfel aan mens se gemoed kan doen. Twyfel is eie aan die mens.

In die Bybel, met name Johannes 20:19-29, word die twyfelaar Thomas aan ons voorgehou.

Thomas leef in elkeen van ons. Hy hou rekening met die feite voor hom en is nie iemand wat sommer ‘n rat voor die oë gedraai sal word nie.

Op ‘n keer het Jesus na Sy opstanding uit die dood aan die dissipels verskyn. Thomas was nie by nie. Toe hy hoor van die gebeure, wil hy tasbare bewyse hê, soos om die merke van die spykers in Jesus se hande te sien. Thomas was volkome eerlik.

Hy het nie gemaak of hy glo terwyl dit nie so was nie. Baie mense sê dat hulle God vertrou, terwyl dit nie so is nie.

Die goeie nuus is dat Christus plek in sy dissipelkring het vir twyfelaars. Hy soek hulle op. Hy lei hulle tot verwondering en aanbidding.

Dit is wat Thomas doen as hy uitroep: “My Here en my God.” Sy eerste reaksie was om nie te glo nie. Toe Hy die Here Jesus se teenwoordigheid ervaar het verander alles. Christus lei jou van vertwyfeling na oorgawe.

Hy vat jou hand in Sy hand, en jy ervaar Sy vertroosting. Daar is hoop vir twyfelaars soos Thomas wat wakker lê in die nag. Als is vir God moontlik.

HIS month the Cancer Association of South Af­ rica (Cansa) is celebrating its 85th birthday.

The NPO was first started as the National Can­ cer Association in 1931.

The association played a leading role in cancer research and cancer policy development, as well as providing care, support and education to South Afri­ cans who have been affected by the disease.

As part of the celebrations in the various bran­ ches and offices, each office will celebrate with the people of their community.

Nicolene Grobbler of South Coast Cansa wished Cansa a happy 85th birthday.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank the organisation, donors, sponsors and patients for the support over the past years.”

Grobbler said without the sponsors and donors the work they do at Cansa would not be possible.

She invites colleagues and friends to be part of a cele­ bration to be held on 27 August at Shelly Centre from 10am.

Celebrating 85 years of working towards

a world

without CANCER

Brief Cansa history 1930s • The founders set out to establish a cancer register, cancer centres and clinics throughout the country, where optimal treatment and diagnostic methods could be investigated.

1940s • Progress was slow during the Great Depression and World War 2, but picked up again in the 1950s when the association introduced educational programmes.

1950s • Clinical facilities for the early detection of uterine cancer were established and a Durbanbased laboratory performed about 70 000 pap smears annually.

• Dr George Oettlé was the first cancer researcher to receive a grant from Cansa in 1958, in order to initiate a cancer research programme in South Africa.

1960s • The first interim home (now Cansa Care Homes) was pioneered in Pretoria, followed by similar homes in Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

1970s • An innovative educational and fund-raising initiative called “Toktokkie” (also known as “Tap-Tap”) was launched nationwide.

• Research grants continued to be sponsored at major universities and research institutions.

Research was of an international calibre, enabling SA cancer therapists to improve levels of therapy for patients.

• Community services were expanded and a “total care” programme was developed to assist cancer patients and their families from diagnosis to the terminal and bereavement phases, where necessary. Doctors, nurses, social workers, ministers of religion and volunteers were involved in these initiatives.

• Volunteers formed part of the “I Can Cope” programme designed to help cancer patients and their families cope with a cancer diagnosis.

Other support groups such as Reach for Recovery for breast cancer patients and survivors were established.

1980s • As a member of the organisation known as the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the National Cancer Association hosted the UICC’s Executive Committee meeting in Johannesburg, as well as an international conference on oesophageal cancer in Cape Town.

• The Hospicare Programme also provided numerous services ranging from home nursing to pain control.

1990s • The National Cancer Association changed its name to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) and a new corporate identity was developed.

• Cansa’s mission was “fighting cancer and its consequences countrywide for the benefit of all South Africans in co-operation with the community by supporting research, health education, information,care and supportive services”.

• An information service was formed to gather, archive and distribute information about cancer and Cansa’s activities to cancer patients and their families, academics, medical professionals, students and members of the public.

This was later renamed the Cansa Science and Resource Centre in 2009.

• Cansa, as a member of the Tobacco Action Group, played a major role in the anti-tobacco legislation of 1999 to ban advertising and sponsorship activities of tobacco products.

2000s • Cansa modernised its image, adopting a new logo and corporate message “Striving for a Cancer Smart South Africa”.

• The Cansa Shavathon phenomenon hit with thousands of people affected by cancer and members of the public shaving off, dying or cutting their hair in solidarity with cancer survivors. The campaign has become an important event on South Africa’s annual calendar.

• Cansa’s environmental awareness campaign was launched, taking a stand on environmental issues by actively communicating Cansa’s researched-based position statement on cancer and the environment.

• Taking its advocacy role as cancer “watchdog” to the next level, Cansa launched the “Cansa Seal of Recognition”, awarding products proven to help reduce the cancer risk with Smart Choice and SunSmart Choice labels.

• The lymphoedema programme was introduced during the inaugural Women’s Health launch in 2009.

2010s • Cansa strives to keep the fight against cancer a top priority with policy makers.

• The association promotes correct food labelling on products, especially of trans fatty acids based on scientific findings.

• Cansa calls on the public and government to protect children against harmful chemicals such as BPA in toys and baby bottles.

• Three new health campaigns are introduced - Men’s Health, Women’s Health and Youth Health.

• In 2013, organised by the UICC and hosted

by Cansa, United Nations officials, Ministries of Health and leading inter-national decisionmakers came together for the first time in Africa to discuss the growing global cancer burden at the 2013 World Cancer Leaders’ Summit (WCLS) in Cape Town. - Cansa.

HE much-anticipated new Honda Civic has finally been unleashed in South Africa and is available from Honda Shelly Beach.

The Fever was invited to test drive the sport version, and its performance and features are simply mind-blowing. The 1.5T Sport CVT features an all-new turbo direct injection engine that produces an exceptional 127 kW of maximum power at 5 500 r/min, along with 220 Nm of maximum torque.

In aiming for superior levels of design and comfort, the car combines a sleek and aerodynamic exterior with spaciousness and comfort.

The car's striking styling carefully reflects a revolutionary silhouette for a four-door sedan, creating the overall impression of a sleek sports coupé.

Special attention was paid to the detailed surfaces in order to fuse quality with sportiness.

The result is a clean, sculpted body shape that emphasises the new Civic's sporty character, reinforced by the lower and wider stance, along with a longer bonnet and short front overhang. This gives the new Honda sedan a more aggressive, athletic and dynamic appearance, while also creating more interior room compared to the outgoing model.The uncluttered interior design features extensive use of attractive soft-touch materials that heighten the sense of premium quality.

Honda's new Agile Handling Assist (AHA) feature is integrated with the Civic's EPS and vehicle control systems to facilitate driving enjoyment, as well as overall control and stability.

AHA anticipates a loss of control during cornering and helps to prevent it by continuously modulating brake and throttle inputs in small, imperceptible increments to assist overall driver control.

An additional safety net is provided by means of the Vehicle Stability Control, incorporating Hill Start Assist,

along with ABS anti-lock brakes and electronic brake force distribution (EBD). The new Civic is equipped with dual front, side and curtain airbags, complemented with a reverse camera

and rear parking sensors.

Honda Shelly Beach will officially launch the new Civic at their showroom this Saturday. The function starts at 9am and everyone is wel-

Kumho tyre design wins excellence award KUMHO’S ground-breaking “Smasher” and “Sealant” tyres have been honoured with 2016 International Design Excellence Awards (Idea).

With the world’s top three design accolades behind it — the Red Dot (Germany), iF International Forum Design (Germany) and Idea (United States) - Kumho’s design and technological capabilities have now been recognised by the industry as a whole.

Kumho said in a statement that the awards for its futuristic Smasher tyre and already available Sealant tyre, have confirmed the tyre company’s ability to encompass both the future and present of tyre design.

The Smasher was evolved in collaboration with the SsangYong Motor Company and attracted significant attention when

unveiled on the Tivoli at the 2015 IAA Motor Show. The tyre is optimised for driving in extreme conditions and features such innovations as suction plates and grindershaped tread blocks.

The former enable the vehicle to ascend steep slopes by creating a vacuum between the tyre and the ground, while the latter permit safe driving over even the roughest terrain by crushing uneven areas that could damage a tyre.

As the name suggests, the Sealant tyre automatically seals itself when penetrated by debris, thereby preventing loss of air pressure. HE fifth Selborne Classic Tournament was held over the weekend with loads of prizes up for grabs.

The toughly contested tournament witnessed golfers bringing out their best, however, it was Pennington residents, Brendan McIntosh, Ryan Johnson, Devin Hartley and Scott Mitchell from Team Grip It and Sip It, who eventually took the Selborne Classic trophy for 2016 with 269 points.

Each team was made up of four players on Friday and Saturday, following a better-ball format, and Sunday a four-ball alliance. The majority of players were from KwaZulu-Natal, with some from out of province, but all with a spectrum of handicaps.
