MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

Morewood and her family have been living in Scottsville for the past eight years and said that over the years the issue of students and illegal student digs in the area has escalated over the years.

“It gets worse every year. The elderly in the area, who have been living there for many years are thinking about leaving, people are looking at other options, it’s sad to think that the area is changing so much,” she said.

Morewood said that the issue is not with all the students who live in the area, it is with those that are inconsiderate of their neighbours.

If there are by-laws then those need to be enforced.

We need to come up with a plan that addresses the needs and concerns of both the residents in the area as well as the students,” she said.

The issue of illegal digs in Scottsville, Pelham and surrounds is not a new one for the municipality who have been dealing with numerous residents in these areas complaining about the influx of students and illegal digs.

According to Morewood, there are six houses in Golf Road alone, that she has identified as troublesome. She has received letters of objections and complaints from various residents in the road opposing the formation of digs in two specific houses and has lodged the objections with the municipality.

“The municipality is aware of the issues relating to student accommodation in Scottsville, that is, the shortage of student accommodation and the conversion of houses to boarding houses.

There are mechanisms in place to address this, contravention notices are issued for the illegal usage of houses for student accommodation and also correct application procedures to be followed for municipal approval are available.

The municipality is also in the process of developing a policy that will guide the establishment of student accommodation throughout the municipal area. Interested and affected parties together with the general public will be involved in this process in due course,” said Nqobile Madonda, acting marketing and communications manager for Msunduzi Municipality.

Bonginkosi Shabalala (40) was remanded in custody until 22 June for a bail hearing after appearing in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.

Drug dealers arrested in city THOROUGH police work and a stroke of luck led to the arrest of four alleged drug dealers, serving a huge blow to the sale of heroin in the city. The dealers were bust in the parking lot of the

Scottsville Mall late on Thursday afternoon, and were found with a firearm and a large consignment of “uncut” heroin, valued at about R70 000. Four men were arrested in the operation and the police seized the heroin, some Mandrax and the firearm.

According to a police source, the four men are alleged to be drug suppliers from Durban who were due to sell their product to local dealers in Pietermaritzburg.

Man denies involvement in girlfriend’s murder PIETERMARITZBURG man Christopher Sabbadu (24) has denied his involvement in the rape and murder of his girlfriend, Letisha Naidoo (20), whose body was recovered from a sewer canal in Northdale. According to the charge sheet, the prosecution alleges that Sabbadu and Naidoo had a “tumultuous” relationship.

It is alleged that he decided to rape and kill her and before the murder had asked for help from four friends, who knew Naidoo. The group allegedly lured Naidoo to a secluded area near Mysore Road, armed with knives and plastic bags. There they assaulted her, grabbed her and forced her to the ground.

While she was held down on the ground, two of the attackers allegedly took turns raping her.

She was also repeatedly assaulted and stabbed and was throttled. Afterwards she was wrapped in plastic bags and dumped in the adjacent sewer canal. The case is proceeding.

GANDHI memorial museum will open soon at the Pietermaritzburg train station in the room where Mahatma Gandhi spent the night after he was thrown off the train at the station 123 years ago.

This was announced at the recent commemoration of Gandhi’s of the day he was thrown off the train on 7 June 1893. The event took place last Tuesday, hosted by the Pietermaritzburg Gandhi Memorial Committee. Also in attendance was the acting Indian Consul General Puneet R. Kundal.

The museum will be funded by the Indian government and will hopefully officially open on 9 July when the second annual Gandhi Memorial lecture will take place with the Prime Minister of India present.

“It is here that he [Gandhi] got the understanding that led him to become a pillar of peace. He believed justice could be served and he believed in hating the sin and not the sinner.

He wasn’t a person that would give up easily and this is what his life teaches us - to forge on and strive for what is right.

“His ideas, values and morals transcend cultures and his life is emulated in many parts of the world, whether known or unknown to people,” said

Kundal.

He thanked the Pietermaritzburg Gandhi Memorial committee for their dedication in continuing the teaching of Gandhi’s life and keeping his memory alive.

“Your commitment comes with great love and affection.

His effect will live on forever,” he said.

David Gengan from the Pietermaritzburg Gandhi Memorial committee said the story of Gandhi needs to be told for many generations to come.

“It is great to see that decades after Gandhi’s death countries continue to speak about him and celebrate his life

and the values he stood for,” he said.

Msunduzi Municipality speaker, Babu Baijoo, reiterated the importance of story tellers to keep the memory of Gandhi as well as other freedom fighters alive.

“Gandhi inspired others, including great people in the world.

The relationship between India and South Africa will continue to remain strong because of this.

“We, as the municipality, wish the Gandhi committee everything of the best and know that in all your endeavours, the city is behind you,” said Baijoo.

ONTUTHUKO Langa, who has been selected to participate in the upcoming Durban Fashion Fair (DFF), an event that attracts top designers from all over the country, is putting Pietermaritzburg on the fashion industry map.

DFF is in its fifth year and will feature 50 designers, including five

With many accomplishments under her belt, Langa prides herself in her flair for fashion and being able to adapt to the market.

“For me fashion is a way of life. We all get dressed every day and make fashion choices without even realising it. It’s what makes us unique, the way we put an outfit together. I’d certainly

The 25-year-old fashion enthusiast from Albert Falls is known for her trendy menswear designs. She was recognised for her work in many fashion events including the Golden Horse Sprint Day, Durban July Young Designers Awards and won Best Menswear Design of the year at the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion where she studied.

This is the second time she has been chosen to participate in DFF. Last year she was given an eight-month mentorship with fashion designers and was sent, fully-paid, to Italy for two months.

“Italy was amazing and completely life-changing. I learnt so much and was exposed to different cultures - it was one of the best experiences,” she said.

Langa runs a fashion design business in Pietermaritzburg called Endless Inspirations where she predominantly designs menswear.

“I do a bit of everything, but I found I excel at menswear. I like simple, practical, timeless pieces adding lots of colour to make the garments interesting and attractive,” she said.

Priscilla Bhika, founder and principal of the School of Fashion, said she is proud of her former student.

“I’m proud to be associated with her and I know she will make waves wherever she goes,” she said.

DFF will run from 31 August to 2 September at the Suncoast Sundeck.

IERRE Buckley has been selected as one of the Mandela Washington Fellowship participants in the Young African Leaders Initiative (Yali) and will be leaving for America tomorrow, 16 June.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is in its third year and offers people from across Africa the opportunity of visiting tertiary institutions in the U.S. There are three tracks of study business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership and public management.

The group this year includes 1 000 people from 46 countries in Africa with 60 from South Africa and only four from KwaZulu-Natal.

KZN’s Got Talent THE Gay and Lesbian Network (GLN) is hosting KZN’s Got Talent and is inviting everyone to audition. This event is part of the build­up to the network’s main event, The Pink Mynah Festival in October and is sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture and endorsed by Tourism KZN and the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association. Auditions will be held on 18 and 19 June at the Pietermaritzburg Tourism Hub, at 280 Langalibalele Street between 9am and 4pm. Entrance is R50 for individuals and R100 for a group. Audition: Your audition may not exceed two minutes. Any act that exceeds two minutes will be stopped. Dancers must bring their own music on a CD, singers must bring a backing track, musicians must bring own equipment, and variety acts must take health and safety into account. SPCA 1000 Paws walk The SPCA 1000 Paws walk, presented by Sunday Tribune, will take place on 10 July at Hilton College from 8.30am to 12pm. Best SPCA dog owner and/or dog look alike competi­ tion. Other prizes, events for the children, food stalls and more will be available.

Longest Day race The 21st Longest Day race will again be hosted by Collegians Harriers Club at the club. It is a 12­hour track race for runners and walkers. A specially designed medal will be presented to all runners who complete a minimum of 80kms and walkers who complete a minimum of 60kms in the allocated 12 hours. The day itself is a wonderful opportunity for family members to support their loved ones and enjoy a day outdoors. This year the race will be held on 6 August at 7am. The race is sponsored

FEVER Youth Day events The Africa Connect And Beyound Ministers Forum will be hosting an event to commemorate National Youth Day at Hillview Sports Grounds, Newholmes from 8am to 4pm.

This event will be used as a platform to address the issues facing the community especially the youth including HIV and AIDS, drugs, alcohol, suicide, teenage pregnancies, among other social ills. There will be praise and worship with song and dance and other fun activities for everyone. Admission is free.

IDLANDS Hindu Society, in association with The Consulate General of India, is hosting the second International Day of Yoga in Pietermaritzburg.

In recognition that yoga provides a holistic approach to health and well­being, the United Nations General Assembly declared 21 June as the International Day of Yoga. In South Africa, the day is commemorated on the Sunday closest to 21 June.

Little bit of Wonderland

IZWHIZ marketing has taken the initiative to launch “The Wonderland campaign”.

The objective of the campaign is to raise awareness about Cansa as well as funds for the organisation, but more importantly to raise awareness about cancer in young children and teach them how to live healthy lifestyles.

The competition is open to girls aged two to 14 and aims to teach young girls, and children in general, about cancer and ensure they have fun while doing so.

The competition started from 13 June and runs until 20 August.

Mini competitions will be hosted throughout the 10 weeks of the campaign, namely best costume, best hat, best cake, best cupcake or tarts, Alice in Wonderland Colouring Competition, Down the Rabbit Hole story competition and best pet outfit.

Two mini-competitions will be launched every week.

Every Saturday, BizWhiz will be visiting malls around PMB and the Midlands to sign little girls up for the campaign.

Since 2004 Cordwalles Parents' Association has hosted the popular Mudman event at Midmar Dam. For the first three years the title sponsor was Jim Green and since 2007 the event has been known as at the aQuellé Cordwalles Mudman. Over the years R3 million has been raised and the funds have been used to pay for various projects. Recently, as part of the Cordwalles active social responsibility, 10% of money raised from sponsorship is donated to Ashdown Primary School in Edendale.

Using the donation from 2015, the money will be spent on repairing and improving the kitchen facilities, which feeds in excess of 1 600 lunches per day. ATTHEW Dunbar, a Grade 12 pupil at St Charles College, received a gold level certificate in the President’s Award for Youth Empowerment, which is part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

The President’s Award is a challenge for young people between the ages of 14 and 24, which started in the United Kingdom in 1956 and was first available in South Africa in 1983.

Matthew is the first in the school’s history to be awarded, after completing a gruelling five-step programme, which included community service, adventurous journey, physical recreation, skills development and residential project.

There are three levels of achievement - bronze, silver and gold.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Matthew said he was honoured to have achieved a gold level at the awards.

“I heard about the awards at assembly and it was something that interested me so I went for it. I went straight for the gold because it was either go big or go home,” he said.

Matthew completed 72 hours of community service, learnt to play the piano as his skill development, played hockey and water polo, spent time at a church outreach programme in Limpopo, where his parents live, and hiked up Drakensburg mountains with 14 people as his adventurous journey.

“It wasn’t hard to be involved in physical activities because I play sport at school, but learning the piano was more challenging than I expected. I love music and used to play the guitar in

junior school, so piano was something that interested me.

“The church outreach programme for a group of underprivileged people was also very challenging because I was exposed to many racial issues, which I didn’t expect, but in the end it was very fulfilling.

“I had to cook for people, look after them and clean up after them. It made me realise that I take a lot for granted and I realised how privileged I am. This was the turning point for me because I got to see how blessed I really am in the small things.”

He said his hike up the mountain was tough as he had to do everything for himself, carry all his equipment, food, clothing and camping bag.

“It was challenging, but we all learnt to look after each other. When others in the group got injured you had to be able to share the load and help them on their way. It was all about being a team player. It taught us to be responsible not only for ourselves, but for others,” he said.

In celebration of The President’s Award’s 60th anniversary, the gold awards were handed out by HRH, Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, and Deputy Minister in the Presidency Buti Manamela at Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg.

Matthew said the journey to achieve the award was very fulfilling.

“It put me in my place, making me realise that it’s not always about me. It makes us question how much we are doing for others who don’t have as much as we do. It was humbling and I am so glad to have been a part of it.”

HE new Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine is now available in South Africa. The flagship of the local XC90 range, the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine brings Volvo Cars’ new electrification strategy to South African roads for the first time.

“With the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine we are rewriting what is possible for plug-in hybrid vehicles,” says Volvo Car South Africa Managing Director, Greg Maruszewski.

The all-wheel drive XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is, as its name suggests, powered by two engines.

A conventional internal combustion setup is employed up front, with the award-winning 2.0-litre four-cylinder

turbo- and supercharged Volvo Drive-E petrol engine powering the front wheels, providing 235 kW and 400 Nm via Volvo’s 8-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox.

Exclusively available in the XC90 T8 Twin Engine, a specialised instrument readout relays information pertaining to battery level, power usage, and the balance between electric and petrol power.

A battery charge indicator lies alongside the traditional fuel gauge, with electric range on display as well.

Then, a classy power gauge replaces the conventional rev counter, showing current power usage for both the electric and petrol engines, the ‘change-over point’ at which the petrol engine will be activated, and the current drive mode.

In Power, AWD and Off-road modes, this dial is converted into a rev counter.

As with all other Volvo models, the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine is available as standard with a 5-year/ 100 000 km warranty, a full 5-year/100 000 km Volvo Plan, Tracker Connect and laminated glass for added security.

YLAN Lowe from Pietermaritzburg will be representing South Africa at the European and African Waterskiing Championships in Italy in August.

The 15-year-old began waterskiing in 2006, and began competing professionally in 2012. Both his parents have been his influence in the sport as they also waterski.

Dylan, a Grade 10 pupil at Maritzburg College, said he loves other sports, but his passion is waterskiing.

“It’s hard to explain why I think waterskiing is so exciting. It’s very social and fun on the water. I have made so many friends, but I think that not enough people in Pieterma-

ritzburg, and in the province, don’t compete enough in the sport. It has so much potential to grow,” he said.

This is the fourth year that Dylan has been invited to participate in the championships, but it is the first he is able to afford it.

He will leave on 2 August with his father and participate in various competitions and training sessions in France and Italy.

“I am very excited to be able to participate in the championships, and hopefully the nerves don’t get to me. I will be competing against lots of people who train in countries where waterskiing is a more popular sport so I know the competition will be tough.”

Disabled athlete, Sandile Luvono, expresses his gratitude for the inclusion of disabled athletes in the Mandela Day Marathon, the first South African marathon to officially include a prize category for disabled athletes.

Entries are open for the race which will take place on 27 and 28 August.

NICOLE JOHN >>nicole@pmbfever.co.za IN an effort to be a fully inclusive race, this year’s Mandela Day Marathon will be open to disabled runners.

“Nelson Mandela was a man of all people so we cannot continue with a race and not be adapting to include and accommodate everyone,” said Lungelo Sithole, communications manager for the Mandela Marathon.

The race weekend now offers a buffet of sporting festivities including mountain biking, triathlon, trail running, and disabled running as well as the usual marathon and half marathon.

Sandile Luvuno from the Msunduzi Disabled Running Club, said that he was thrilled that the marathon was finally including a space for disabled runners and making their “dreams come true.”

“Because as people with disabilities we felt that the Mandela Day Marathon is for the normal people only and we felt isolated from our beloved country of democracy.

“We kept telling ourselves that democracy is not for the disabled people, it’s for the normal only because in our country nobody understands us very well, but today our prayers have been answered and we are going to be a part of

the Mandela Day Marathon,” said Luvuno.

He said that the runners are looking forward to flying the flag of disabled runners for all people with disabilities in KwaZulu-Natal.

Race director Johan van Staden said that Luvuno was the man that never gave up.

“He was determined to get the race to be all inclusive. Our wheelchair participation was much smaller before but we have grown it in order to include everyone,” he said. Van Staden added that disabled runners from around the country have also shown interest in the race and will be participating this year.

“It was been confirmed that we are the first race offering category prizes for blind and deaf runners in South Africa,” said van Staden.

District Municipal Mayor councillor Yusuf Bhamjee said that he was proud that the marathon was growing in inclusivity.

“Madiba was a unifier, he preached that South Africa belong to all who live in it. We are proud to announce that we have added another day to the festivities because of the enthusiasm shown from other sporting codes.

“We are known by AIMS [Association of International Marathons and Distance Races] as the fastest growing marathon and we know that together we can grow from strength to strength,” he said.

100 Miles of Nowhere cyclethon at Cascades THE Cascades Lifestyle Centre will host “The Cows” non­profit organisation’s Choc Child­ hood Cancer Foundation fund­raiser during the 100 Miles of Nowhere cyclethon on 24 June.

Supported by Cadence Cycling Performance Centres around the country, the Pietermaritzburg Cadence Performance Centre, which recently moved into the Cascades Centre Business Park, is supplying the Cascades Centre with 20 of their new stationary bikes and monitoring equipment.

“Cascades Lifestyle Centre is happy to support this important Cows initiative for the Choc Foundation. We encourage Martizburg residents and cyclists to come out in full force to the centre on 24 June from 2pm to support this international challenge. Many of our retail­ ers are supporting this initiative,” said Lynda Lees, consultant to Cascades Lifestyle Centre.

This year, the cyclethon of 100 miles (160km) aims to raise R250 000 for Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation, and is open to everyone. The distance can be completed as a team of one cyclist, two or four cyclists.

However the team is made up, the distance must be completed on the Cadence Perform­ ance Centre stationary bikes.

“The 100 Miles of Nowhere challenge is a great event we’re proud to support. We will transport 20 of our new stationary bikes and equipment to the Cascades Centre ready for set up and cycling. It’s a fun, family­orientated event that the whole community gets behind, and we thank the Cascades Centre for hosting the event,” said Tessa Hesse, of Pietermaritz­ burg Cadence Performance Centre manager.

As part of the fund­raiser, cyclists pay an entry fee donation of R1 000 for a solo rider, R600 per rider for teams of two, and R350 per rider for teams of four, and are encouraged to get their friends, family and colleagues to sponsor them per kilometre or to complete the distance, all of which goes directly to Choc.

The 100 Miles of Nowhere concept is now an international fund­raising initiative that was unintentionally started by Eldon Nelson, an American blogger who owns the www.fat­ cyclist.com blog.

The cyclethon will be hosted at eight Cadence Performance Centres in Pietermaritz­ burg, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, and all centres will run the cyclethon simultaneously on 24 June from 2pm to 7pm.
