ARENTS and governing body members of Woodlands Primary School have been promised a meeting by the Department of Education, with consultants and engineers, on 25 May to come up with a plan of action for the rebuilding of the school.

“Following a second lockout, parents and SBG members went to the head of department’s offices and demanded a meeting with him.

“We said that we will not be leaving the offices until we receive, in writing, confirmation that a visit to the school will be set up,” said Shawn Adkins, SGB chairman.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Adkins said that there have been numerous letters written to the department

about the state of the school, which was built in 1973 and has never been renovated or maintained.

“We are waiting for the public meeting on the 25th [May].

We want to see results. As a school we are unanimous. If the school is not rebuilt then we will close it and there will be consequences,” he said.

The school has received feedback from the department, after the lockouts that the school will be rebuilt, however the estimated time frames state that the completion of the new school will be in 2020 with construction set to begin in the latter half of next year. According to Adkins, the department estimated that rebuilding the school will be R45 million and will take about four years.

“This is just not acceptable.

Our need is urgent and the

school needs to be rebuilt now.

“We want construction to begin as soon as this year, to be completed by next year. Not only is the school in a poor state, the medical effects the asbestos is having and continues to have is growing,” said Adkins.

The asbestos, which is what the school is built with, is broken throughout the school.

Most of the holes, however, have been patched in order to enclose it.

Adkins said that pupils do not know any better and often touch and play with it.

Teachers are committed and continue with their work as usual, however.

He explained that the action taken by the parents in the form of the #OurKidsLives Matter campaign was long overdue as the problem facing the school is not new.

Copeville man killed in crash A FATHER and his sons’ day out fishing at the dam turned tragic when ‘good Samaritan’ Jonathan Govender (36) died in an accident. Govender and his two sons, Eric (15) and Ryan (12), spent the public holiday, 2 May, fishing at Albert Falls dam ­ a regular outing for the family. On their way home, a taxi crashed into Govender’s red Golf on the R33 at around 6.30pm killing his and leaving his two sons injured.

The car carrying the family collided with another vehicle on the road leaving two people with serious injuries and three with minor injuries.

“The injured were treated at the scene before medics transported them to various hospitals,” said Botha. The cause of the accident is being investigated by authorities.

City temple robbed again BURGLARS struck again at the Northdale Siva Nyana Sabha in Chetty Road, making this the third break-in at the temple in just over a week. Sagren Phillips, chairperson of the ashram, expressed shock and disappointment at the continuous burglaries, especially since attempts were made to increase security after the break-in on April 29 when more than R50 000 worth of

Lurring’s sound is a blend of modern­day soul, R&B fused with hip­hop and pop.

“I knew I was passionate about music when I realised it is the only job I would be completely happy make a living from. I was obsessed with singing, even as a toddler, I would even sing Billy Wood songs,” he said.

Lurring entered The Voice SA most importantly for the exposure on a big platform that is broadcast live.

“I felt nervous, but didn’t put too much weight on it and just gave it my best. It was

the most pivotal moment in my life at the time when I got the call for the blind auditions, which were amazing since I got to perform with a professional band and on an national TV show.”

He said his experience on the show has been intense, but an amazing, wonderful experience.

“It feels slightly weird because you’re very vulnerable to the public watching, but at the same time I feel honoured, humbled and grateful. The response from the pub­ lic has been positive and supportive.

“My home town in particular has been showing me so much love, from friends and family to the fans who watch the show,” he said.

“I’ve always loved music growing up, but I honestly started taking it seriously when I entered the talent shows at my school. Then I joined the school band and it just went from there.

“Michael Bublé was the artist that got me into singing. I loved listening to his music and from that I wanted to pursue my music,” said Grayson.

He said after the talent shows at school he knew that music was something that he

wanted to do for the rest of his life.

“I started writing my own music and sending it to radio stations and they starting playing my stuff and then it just carried on from there,” he said.

The St Charles College matriculant is studying sound engineering and music production at Cape Audio College in Cape Town, where he has been living for two years. His sound, an acoustic mix of folk, R&B and pop, has been a hit on the show.

Grayson said he always wanted to enter the competition since watching the Ameri­ can shows and grabbed the opportunity when it was brought to South Africa.

“I was excited and nervous but just keen to get the opportunity to show my music

to South Africa. It’s been an amazing journey so far and I hope I can continue.

“It’s been an amazing experience that I will never forget. I’ve had the privilege of meeting amazing singers, becoming friends with them and learning from them too. It’s been a privilege to perform for South Africa. It means a lot that people will use their own money and time to vote for me and I appreciate all the support, and I’m super thankful for the belief they have had in me,” said Grayson.

IETERMARITZBURG, on its way to make history with the newly opened KwaZulu­ Natal branch of Stop Hunger Now (SHN), has committed to be part of the nationwide challenge of packing two million food hampers for Mandela Day in South Africa.

Speaking at the recent official launch of SHN offices and the Mandela Day initiative, SHN CEO Saira Khan said she is overjoyed that the city will be part of making internation­ al history as they join with SHN branches internationally to a record­breaking 10 million meals around the world.

“This year Stop Hunger Now in South Africa decided to take the challenge to pack two million meals after breaking a record last year by packing over one million meals in only three cities on one day.

“I challenged the organisation’s branches internationally until everyone came on board to create a global challenge.”

This means that over a one week ­ from 13 to 20 July ­ SHN branches from India to Italy, America and South Africa will all be packing meals at the same time in order to reach the global challenge of 10 million meals.

SHN has over 56 000 beneficiaries nationwide and packs meals that are nutritious and dehydrat­ ed comprising rice, soya, vegetables, soup mix and

23 essential vitamins and minerals packaged by Heinz for SHN worldwide.

“People sometimes don’t understand the difference between malnutrition and hunger. To alleviate hunger I can give a child a packet of chips, but that is not nutritious. Therefore, while I alleviate hunger, there are more serious long­term consequences because they are not eating any­ thing nutritious.

“What we do is give them nutritious food, which include all essential minerals in order to address both hunger and mal­ nutrition,” said Khan.

This year, hosted under the theme “Follow the Sun”, the initiative has been extended to a week of meal packaging to honour the Madiba legacy of making every day a Mandela Day. The event is aimed at corporate and organisations that support the event by send­ ing teams to participate in the meal packaging activities as part of their 67 minutes. Companies join the event by sponsoring R10 000 per team of 20 people, who then participate with thousands of other corporate volunteers, contributing to supporting early childhood development facilities and universities with meals for a year.

The cost covers the ingredients and packaging of these meals.

Volunteers are an essential part of this initiative as they package the meals ensuring that Stop Hunger Now SA programmes remain cost effective, thereby widening its reaches.

Gouws, the only finalist from PMB, competed against 99 other women at the recent event held at Emperors Palace, the home of Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs SA. “The whole experience was humbling and overwhelming. I truly have an attitude of gratitude. This was my first time competing in something like this and to be able to be among other dynamic women of worth was special.

“Knowing that the people of Pietermaritzburg were behind me was very encouraging.

All of them got me where I am today,” she said.

Gouws said she is excited to start the next step in her journey and, although she would love to win, has eyes for only one award and that it Mrs Charity.

“I said it from the beginning and I will say it again, I love helping people and I want to get that award. My passion has always been giving back to the community so I am looking forward to using this platform to do so. Once you’re a giver, it’s hard to be a taker. I want to leave footprints of kindness wherever I go,” she said.

The next step in the journey to the title will include charity work, securing sponsors and getting “likes” on the new photos of the finalists posted on the Schwarzkopf Professional Mrs South Africa Facebook page.

AN area of nursing that often goes unnoticed is the work of a case manager.

The primary job of a case manager is to ensure that during a patient’s stay in hospital “we act as the patient’s advocate and ensure they get the best possible care, at the most affordable price without compromising on the quality of care that they receive”, said Midlands Medical Centre case manager, Merle Williams.

Williams, who won the South African Case Manager of the Year at in the Private Hospital Category from the Case Management Association of South Africa in 2013, sat down with Maritzburg Fever to discuss the important role a case manager plays within a hospital environment, in celebration of Nurses Day, which is celebrated tomorrow 12 May, Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

The day celebrates nurses who work long hours, late nights and dedicate their lives to helping others. Case managers are also acknowledged as people who advocate for the patient’s needs and play a mediating role between the atient and medical aid, and between patient and doctor.

Williams, who has 30 years’ experience in the nursing profession, has been a case manager for the past 18 years. Over the years she has fought many battles on patients’ behalf, ensuring that their bills get paid by their medical aid, and that they receive the best care.

She explained that every day she and her colleagues visit patients in their wards checking on their progress and ensuring that the medical aid is updated with all the relevant information to ensure that their stay in hospital is covered in full.

“When I visit them I introduce myself and tell them they need to make sure they get better and that I am here to ensure their bills get paid by their medical aid. I’ve often gone beyond the call of duty for my patients. It’s all about educating them on the rules and limitations on their medical aid to ensure their expenses are paid in full.

“In the current economic climate, it’s not fair for a patient to have to pay medical bills, while contributing to a medical aid.”

Williams said she has a passion for helping people and, even though she is not on the floor as a nurse, she gets to interact with people and help them in other ways, which is fulfilling for her.

“I’ve learnt a lot over the years. I’ve improved my skills and knowledge through coding courses, and it’s been very rewarding. I believe that we, as case managers, play a vital role in the hospital as we have to ensure maximisation of hospital revenue through correct ICD and CPT coding, accurate hospital and/or medical aid contract interpretation, precise case management processes and timeous submission of accounts to medical aid.

“I’ve never regretted making the move from nursing because I still get to help people, which is what I love,” said Williams.

She matriculated from Russell High School and took art at school.

“It’s something I would love to do full time. The experience at Art in the Park has been eye-opening and I already have ideas for my next exhibition. I’m so glad that I have had this experience to grow me as an artist.”

Ngcobo hopes that showcasing her art will open doors for other young, black female artists who find it hard to enter the industry.

“I hope that my story and art will inspire other women to focus on what they are good at and pursue it with their heart,” she said.

AKING her debut as an artist at this year’s Art in the Park is Thulile Ngcobo whose passion is painting.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, Ngcobo said that becoming an artist was not something she pursued, but it was something she always enjoyed doing.

“I didn’t choose art, it chose me.

I can’t say that one day I woke up and decided I wanted to be an artist because it wasn’t like that. It’s just something that was in me.”

The 27-year-old calls herself a “self-taught” artist who learnt to create pieces by experimenting, however, she never showcased her work.

“This is the first time I am showing the public my work. I have

Magical musical moments at 166th Royal Show

W

HETHER you love rock, pop, hip-hop or the music of Bollywood, the 166th Royal Show, which runs from 27 May to 5 June at the Royal Showgrounds, will have something to enjoy.

The Kickstands, Majozi, Shortstraw and Jeremy Loops will take to the stage in the main arena for the Royal Rock Concert on Saturday afternoon, 28 May. Loops is an award-winning folk musician, whose debut album, Trading Change, debuted at number one in his land and was named album of the year 2014 by iTunes SA. He toured the United States with Rebelution and supported Twenty One Pilots in Europe in 2015. In January and February he headlined a tour of Europe, titled Continental Drift.

Durban musician, Majozi, describes his music as Indie-folk with subtle influences of electro and attributes his faith as one of his musical inspirations.

He has performed at the Oppi Koppi Music and White Mountain music festivals as well as playing on the

main stage at the Mr Price Pro Concert. Majozi also toured South Africa with The Lumineers in December 2014. He has also released his debut EP with Universal Music, Mountains.

Shortstraw has rocked live music venues and clubs around the country and is well known for getting the crowd dancing. The band released their third full-length album, Youthless, last year. It debuted at number one on the iTunes Album Chart on the day of its release.

The final act is the Durban duo, The Kickstands, who have performed with Goldfish, Just Jinjer, Goodluck, Albert Frost, Arno Carstens, Matthew Mole, Gangs of Ballet, Desmond and the Tutus and Mango Groove. Their live performances have carried their unique, improvised and energetic acoustic sound around Southern Africa gaining fans along the way.

From 2pm on Sunday, 29 May, the showgrounds will host the Vuma FM Concert, hosted by Kwasa Breakfast Show presenter, Linda “Mr Magic” Sibya. The show will feature gospel

and hip-hop artists, including Thobekile, Kwesta, and some of the country’s hottest DJs - DJ Sox, DJ Andre, Linda “The Game” Ndimande and Msizi Shembe.

Saturday, 4 June is Bollywood Nite at the Royal Show. From 5.30pm, Pinky Mothie and Big M Productions will be showcasing the talents of international star, Rajesh Kumar, Mona Maharaj, from Johannesburg and Suresh Nathoo and Pravesh Sunker. The musicians will be backed by the Bollywood Showband.

Bollywood dance sensation, Shiksha Singh, is also billed to appear with her professional dancers and there will be a performance by the dancers of the Afrofusion cast and Rajiv Mothie. Lotus FM Bhangra will end the programme with their DJs and a live bhangra.

At 10am on Sunday, 5 June, the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra will perform The Royal Symphony in the main arena.

Farewell after three decades of fond memories

C

ARTER High School bids a fond farewell to Rina Howard who retired after 30 years of loyal service to the school after joining the Carter High School family in 1985 as a volunteer in the tuck shop when her eldest son started Grade 8.

In 1998 she stepped in as a relief for a friend who worked at reception and applied when the post was later advertised. She thrived in that environment as her personality was well suited to meeting and greeting visitors, staff and pupils. Howard quickly acclimatised to the team and moved to the cash office in 2009.

“The time has come for retirement and I do look forward to the time I will spend with my dear husband, our three sons, their wives and our special and beautiful six grandchildren and attend their sport days. I also look forward to relaxing, reading more and to do more sewing and knitting.”

Looking back, different people have impacted the lives of staff and children at the school and Mrs Howard is one of them. Her essence of team, dedication and encouragement was much appreciated and will be missed.

Merchiston Preparatory School recently celebrated Dave Beetar’s 60th birthday. In celebration of this momentous occasion, the boys and staff wore beach clothes, as much of Mr Beetar’s leisure time is spent surfing.

Beetar has been a part of Merchiston Preparatory School for 28 years and the past 16 years have seen him at the helm of the school as headmas­ ter. We thank him for his commitment and dedication to the growth and success of the school. REEDOM Day was all about family for the St Charles College Preparatory School.

The morning was busy with various activities taking place for the

pre-primary, junior primary, senior primary and parents.

The Scrummies boys and their families took part in an “amazing race”. The junior primary boys had

fun football fixtures where they could wear their favourite football team’s jersey.

The senior primary kicked things off with an inter-house cross-coun-

try race, and then took part in a football festival. The parents also got involved with the parents’ hockey that took place on the astro.

The Grade 7 parents were hard

at work making and selling food to satisfy the hungry crowds.

It was a fun-filled day, with the idea of family being at the centre of it all.

T wasn’t an entirely disastrous weekend for Maritzburg United, but their players will feel disappointed they didn’t take three points from their game against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

For much of the game, the Team of Choice were the better team on the field, and they were done in only by bad luck and finishing.

Having been a victim of rotten luck for practically the entire season, United were fortunate to not concede in the dying moments of stoppage time when Thamsanqa Gabuza missed from point blank range, but the foot of Tamsanqa Teyise could also be credited with the crucial save. At the end, the points were shared, putting United level on 21 with the University of Pretoria, and four behind Jomo Cosmos, their opponents on the final day of the season.

Two games remain in the season, and Ernst Middendorp was still confident that his team can survive, telling SuperSport he enjoyed the challenge of working with struggling teams.

“We put everything in. It was very close in some moments. In terms of the finishing over 90 minutes, I told my players ‘keep this concentration, keep this focus,

keep this desire’,” Middendorp said during the television broadcast after the game.

“We keep fighting. We play the next game in four days [on Wednesday], home game.

Hopefully there is a lot of support and we make the step that’s necessary,” the German said.

Winning both of their remaining games, against Ajax Cape Town and Jomo Cosmos, will preserve United’s top flight status, or at least see them qualify for the relegation/ promotion playoffs.

“Two games to play … now is the question ‘will everyone win two games?’ I don’t know. Actually, in this league, it makes it very interesting.

“We know we have a chance. I said in the beginning of January when I went into this challenging project that the last three, four games will make it. We are somehow used to it; this situation of nothing lose.

“This is nothing new. I’ve taken teams from the bottom up to safety.

I like this challenge,” Middendorp said.

While United host the Urban Warriors on Wednesday, AmaTuks travel to the capital of Limpopo to take on Polokwane and Jomo Cosmos are in Durban to play against Golden Arrows. On the final day, Tuks will host Arrows, with United and Cosmos going head-to-head.

If United can avoid relegation, it will no doubt be the greatest of escapes, possibly even greater than Leicester City’s run to avoid the drop last season.

IETERMARITZBURG’S Long Donkeys have been crowned the Ultimate Frisbee National Mixed champions for a third time in succession after going through the recent tournament in Cape Town unbeaten.

“We’re very excited to have won three in a row,” vice-captain Ryan McFie said.

“The powerhouses are, theoretically, in Cape Town. They consider themselves the powerhouse of South Africa, but Maritzburg, little Sleepy Hollow, holds the title for three years now.”

When they won the national title for the first time in 2014, the Long Donkeys were the first team from outside of the Cape to claim the honours. They have since proved it was no fluke by establishing themselves as the number one team in the land.

As is so often the case with success, however, it has taken long-term commitment and a never-say-die spirit for the Long Donkeys to ascend to number one. Before they won their first national title they finished as runners-up for five years in a row.

They were well prepared for this year’s tournament at the University of Cape Town and showed they would not give up their crown without a fight by crushing their opposition in the pool stages, scoring 68 points and conceding only 10, eight of which were against Durban’s Bunnies.

In the quarter-finals, the Long Donkeys overpowered East London’s Hammerheads, which earned them a showdown with former national champions Ghost Ultimate. Again, the Long Donkeys triumphed, claiming a 15-10 win.

After that success, they expected to face Cape Town’s Chilli in the finals, but Chilli, the only team to have beaten Long Donkeys in the past three years, were shocked by UCT’s Tigers.

The title decider featured excellent lay-outs and stifling defence, but it was a new twist on the Long Donkeys’ zone defence, which had been implemented for the first time at this year’s nationals, which made the difference.

“It worked like a bomb. It made a difference in the final by getting us a couple of points ahead at crucial times,” McFie said.

younger members, Marcel Fenziel and Pia Steyn, who were named the tournament MVPs, also helped the Pietermaritzburg club successfully defend their title with a 15-12 win.

In 2017, the Long Donkeys will be aiming to make history by becoming the first four-time winners of the national title.
