MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

Residents fed up with trucks IRATE residents and fuming motorists say they are “completely fed up” with truck drivers who continue to damage pavements and ignore the rules of the road. Some frustrated motorists and residents in the Hayfields area said they have waited almost 45 minutes for trucks to make U-turns on Hesketh Drive and New England Road. With the continuous use of the area as a truck stop, roads are often blocked and reduced to one lane. The situation s worse in the evenings as the trucks make their overnight stops. Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the city spent almost R500 000 on repairs and maintenance of the Hayfields “truck stop” and said that fines are issue to the truck drivers.

Another well­known B&B reported being duped out of R4 800 by a woman who stayed there for eight

The manager said the woman claimed to be an accountant conducting audits of local schools. She said she had stayed at the same B&B last month but paid for her three­night stay. She re­ turned to the B&B two weeks ago. Police are calling on anyone who may have been scammed by the woman to come for­ ward and contact Warrant Officer Sydney Reddy at 073 206 2424.

RGANISATIONS aligned to looking after the well-being of children have spoken out about the seriousness of sexual abuse of minors.

Maritzburg Fever spoke to Lifeline and Child Welfare about the effects that sexual abuse has on children and how to help parents cope if their children are victims.

According to Julie Todd, director at child welfare, the effects are both physical and behavioural. It impacts different children in different ways depending on, among other things, the age of the child at the time of the abuse, the nature of the abuse, whether any physical violence was used and their psycho-social well-being at the time of the abuse.

“Children tend to feel responsible for the abuse. If the child is close to the perpetrator, in an effort to make the child keep the secret, the perpetrator may try to make them feel responsible for their situation by saying things like ‘your mom and/or dad won’t understand, and then I will lose my job and I will get sent away and my children or you won’t have a daddy’,” said Todd.

According to Todd, while the effects of sexual abuse does not differ from boy to girl, more shame is felt by boys and there is more reluctance to report the abuse.

“Children need to know that it is not their fault that this has happened to them and nothing they did or didn’t do has caused it. They need reassurance and support.

“A parent needs to be supportive, to avoid blame and, although it’s difficult, try to refrain from extreme emotions, particularly anger, as the perpetrator would have already groomed the child in such a way to pre-empt this and would have possibly told the child ‘if you tell, your parents will get angry and mad and will be cross with you’.

“Even though the anger would be directed at the alleged perpetrator, the child would not necessarily view it that way and if parents argue and fight about it with each other or with others, the child will often feel responsible for causing this upset and may wish he or she had never said anything,” she said.

Sinikiwe Biyela, director of Lifeline Pietermaritzburg, said that it is not common among children to fabricate sexual abuse stories.

“Children don’t talk about sex normally.

When do they talk about it means they have observed sexual activities or it has happened to them. When such claims are made, it is always recommended that the child is taken to a hospital for assessment,” she said.

Biyela added that children need both medical and psychological interventions if there is sexual abuse.

“Child sexual abuse brings lots of trauma to the child’s life. This traumatic experience is like an infected wound that will not heal unless treated. Some parents are under the impression that the child will forget and move on. This is the biggest mistake parents make. If children are not supported fully, they do not recover from the effect of sexual abuse.”

Todd and Biyela expressed the importance of parents seeking help in order to better support their children.

“In counselling sessions parents will gain skills to better support the survivor and to manage the effects of abuse at home.

“Parents have to work hand in hand with the therapist to achieve the best results,” said Biyela.

Todd said that communication is important.

“Keep communication open and be supportive. Don’t feel bad if your child chooses not to open up to you and don’t try and pressure them to do so.

“The important thing is that the child feels loved and supported and how this is done will differ for each child depending on, among other things, the child’s individual psyche as well as the family dynamics and how the parents cope with everything.”

These sessions are not once­off, the child needs to be given sufficient time to express his or her feelings and be assisted to cope. They also need to be prepared for the court case, and other legal processes that follows.

•Parental involvement in therapeutic sessions is very important. Parents are also affected by this traumatic incident, they go through a number of emotions including anger, fear, lack of trust, they suffer from guilt and self­blame. They also need to be counselled in order to support the survivors better.

•Survivors spend most of their time at home, therefore parents or caregivers of the survivors needs to be equipped with the skills to manage the issues, and they need to learn ways of supporting the survivor, who is going through the effects of sexual abuse.

ROWING up surrounded by music, Pietermaritzburg sisters Deme and Niqi Harris, known as DéMonique, are determined to change the face of the South African music industry.

With two albums, Ain’t That Innocent and First & Foremost, under their belt, DéMonique’s latest single, Break the Floor was inspired by dance. They wanted to tap into a type of pop genre they felt was lacking in the SA music scene.

“We found Mangray Music, a producer we gelled with, and created Break the Floor for people around the world to get their feel-good twerk on.”

It was the love of music and the artists they idolised growing up that inspired the Harris sisters to get into music.

“We grew up around music to the point that it was basically a way of life. We were in a band for a while, then ventured out on our own,” they said.

With the likes of some of the greats including Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey and Pink, among others, DéMonique pride themselves on being unique.

“We seem to run in the opposite direction of everything that’s apparently the norm.

We’d say we are unique in everything from our type of music and act, to hair and dress sense, if it’s something we just don’t do, its follow trends,” said the sisters.

Deme and Niqi matriculated from Raisethorpe Secondary School, and live in Gauteng. They started singing at a young

age and performed many times while at in school, but only took it seriously as a career a few years back.

“People underestimate the power of music. Beside the fact that we knew we could sing and it was our passion, we wanted to prove that sometimes what people say is impossible, is actually very possible. We are making it known that this is one of the most difficult career choices,” they said.

DéMonique have opened for international artists including Pitbull, Jay Sean and Fat Man Scoop.

The sister said that they always wanted to sing together.

“Sisters by nature, besties by choice,” they said. They have many similarities that make the duo work well, but they are different in many ways too.

“I am super-chilled, but business is business and when it comes to that I am a perfectionist. I’m a go-getter and appreciate the little things in life,” said Deme.

Niqi on the other hand is the spontaneous one. “Spontaneous, which sometimes edges on impulsive, which is not always a good thing. Passionate about love, life and anything delicious, mostly anything chocolate,” she joked.

DéMonique are excited about their new single and will drop the video for it soon.

“Thereafter we have other exciting releases, collaborations, tours, and since people always ask us about our unique sense of style, who knows, possibly even a DéMonique collection somewhere down the line.”

As part of Pick n Pay’s Next Generation project, shoppers can look forward to a more welcoming and appealing store with brighter colours and clearer signage, open spaces, dedicated destination areas, “hero” departments with more products in innovative packaging, and a stronger focus on fresh products.

Speaking to Maritzburg Fever, store manager Vincent Gwala said that the 41-year-old store was in dire need of a revamp with some of the equipment being old and needing repair and replacement.

“It was really looking tired and with the competition around we decided to change it and make it look good for our customers. After 41 years of being loyal to the store, they deserve a new look,” he said.

Gwala said that everything in the store is new, and there is a new pharmacy, which will open soon.

“When ranging a Next Generation store, products are hand-picked to cater specifically to the needs of the community shopping in that particular area, with many of our insights coming from Smart Shopper data on shopping trends in the area.

“It is no different at Hayfields, where the range has been tailor-made to suit the needs of our Hayfield customers,” said Anil Gopichund, Pick n Pay KZN general manager.

He began in receiving, moved to the fruit and vegetable department and now packs the shelves in the store.

Zuma will be retiring in March 2017 after 41 years at the store.

“I’ve only been at Hayfields. It’s looking good and bright now. I’m excited,” he said.

Loyal shoppers Bernie Karam and Raymond du Toit attended the re-launch last week and were happy with the new changes.

Karam has been shopping at the store for 15 years and enjoys spending time there, entertaining the staff and “putting a smile on their faces”.

“I dance and make them happy. The staff are outstanding and their service is excellent,” she said.

She said that even though the staff sometimes have difficult customers they remain helpful.

“I love coming to the store. I haven’t had one negative incident,” said Karam.

Msunduzi does its bit KAILENE PILLAY MSUNDUZI Munici­ pality saved 22% of its usual water con­ sumption last month, bypassing the savings achieved by eThekwini and uMgungundlovu District Municipality.

However, it is a bitter­sweet celebra­ tion given that there are still areas in Msunduzi that have not received a drop of water to their homes for over four months, and other areas that have had almost constant water interruptions.

These residents are losing their cool, with tersely worded communiques flying to the municipality on behalf of one irate community.

While Msunduzi Municipality showed a 22% saving in June, managers there ad­ mitted they are tak­ ing the accolade “with a pinch of salt”.

“We cannot be boastful about our savings when there are still portions of the city without wa­ ter. We do, however, appreciate the peo­ ple who have tried their best to save wa­ ter,” said Water and Sanitation manager Brenden Sivparsad.

He said while most residents are saving water where they can, their big­ gest concern is the enforced savings in the greater Edendale area. Areas such as Willowfountain, Aza­ lea, Ambleton, Kwa­ Pata and Imbali have had no water since March. High­lying ar­ eas such as Prest­ bury, upper Montrose and Clarendon have had an intermittent supply of water.

However, some Azalea residents were overjoyed on Thursday when wa­ ter ran through their taps after four months.

One of the resi­ dents said they were happy to see their water had returned.

However, they still filled buckets for storage “just in case”.

“I don’t trust the municipality. They did not tell us that the water was com­ ing back so they won’t tell us when it will be cut again,” said a resident, who did not want to be named.

Ward councillor for the France area, Sindisiwe Gwala, said her area was also left without water for four months. Howev­ er, Gwala said the municipality has sent water tankers to the area daily from 7am until 8pm.

Crime in winter AMIL UMRAW CRIMINALS appear to be using winter to capital­ ise, with residents bear­ ing the brunt as break­ins escalate in some PMB suburbs.

Both Pietermaritz­ burg’s police clusters have reported increases in housebreaking and robbery incidents in the past two weeks, and have warned residents to be extra vigilant as blue­ light patrols flood the streets to prevent attacks.

Captain Gay Ebrahim, communications officer for the uMgungundlovu North cluster, said police have identified hot spots based on cases reported and are mobilising officers in these areas to curb the rate of home invasions.

Ebrahim identified the Orient Heights and Copesville areas as current hot spots for home invasions.

She said the inci­ dents were isolated and seemed to be the work of opportunistic criminals rather than criminal syndicates.

Similarly, uMgun­ gundlovu South spokes­ person Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese said the cluster management had noted a “slight” increase in armed robberies over the past week, while housebreak­ ings persist.

Ngobese pinpointed Hayfields and Mkondeni as their current hot spots.

Ebrahim said a possi­ ble reason for the spike in home invasions and pet­ ty theft was the sun set­ ting earlier, with many people walking home in the dark falling victim to robbers on the streets.

She said residents were also going to bed earlier and were asleep earlier, giving criminals the advantage.

However, the police have hit back, holding various crime awareness campaigns in Copesville and increasing police vis­ ibility in Orient Heights.

“We are also regularly visiting second­hand dealers like pawn shops and scrapyards in attempts to recover stolen items. We urge residents to be extra vigi­ lant and security con­ scious,” Ebrahim said.

“Residents should al­ so keep a record of serial numbers of all their items at home, which increases the likelihood of stolen items being returned to them once found.”

Ngobese said home­ owners should be wary of strange vehicles or persons walking in their neighbourhood at night, and urged residents to report all incidents so police could allocate their resources effective­ ly in the fight against crime.

Political parties ready for elections

OLITICAL parties contesting the local government elections in the Msunduzi region have all expressed optimism after concluding their electioneering over the weekend with big rallies intended as shows of force.

ANC regional secretary Mzi Zuma said his party went to all corners of the uMgungundlovu District.

“We did all that we could have possibly done. We did door-todoor campaigns, which was the main strategy of our campaign.

“We also held community meetings where we engaged with community members. We went to churches and we also spoke with traditional leaders.”

Zuma said the party had been worried by the death of four members during the campaign, but volunteers had continued with election activities nonetheless.

Edendale branch treasurer Simo Ncwabe, who had resigned a day earlier as Mpofana chief financial executive officer, was gunned down outside his Edendale home on June 1. while taking his children to school Lateron that day, Edendale branch chairperson Nathi Hlongwa was killed outside his Imbali home.. while coming back from a branch meeting. And Imbali ward 15 branch members Badedile Tshapa and Phetheni Ngubane were also shot and killed in June while walking back from an ANC meeting.

Zuma said he was not worried by any opposition party, saying candidates from DA, EFF and NFP had already defected to the ANC. The DA’s mayoral candidate, Mergen Chetty, said the party was feeling very confident after an “exceptionally well-received” campaign in Msunduzi over the last three months. He said this weekend was packed with campaigning events held throughout the city.

“The Blue Wave and Hoot for DA campaigns have been extremely well-received by residents of all races across the city. It is encouraging to know that the work on the ground has

been positive and successful,” Chetty said.

The door-to-door campaigns in each ward culminated last Friday with a Blue Wave outside Northway Mall with more than 150 supporters. The same entourage conducted a placard demonstration and Blue Wave in the Raisethorpe CBD on Saturday, before proceeding to Oribi with a mini motorcade.

“Saturday was very busy for us and we used it to the best for our campaign. We also visited Peace Valley in Ward 26 and an informal settlement, Sacca, near Ashburton in Ward 37,” Chetty said.

On Sunday, the leading opposition party hosted numerous public meetings across Pietermaritzburg.

“We have noticed through our campaign that more and more residents have embraced the DA’s Vote for Change campaign,” Chetty said.

sacrifice by leaving Parliament to run for mayor of Msunduzi.

“It is a big sacrifice, but I am willing to do it. My passion is for where I was born and raised, and they say charity begins at home.

I don’t mind a cut in my pay cheque if it means our people get the best service delivery,” he said.

The EFF’s Dumisani Shelembe said his party was more than ready for the elections.

“I am highly confident that wards 1, 2 as well as 20, my home ward, are already in the bag, and we will be celebrating after the elections.”

HEN everything around us seems all doom and gloom with the severe drought, poverty, lawlessness, local-election tension, political killings, corruption, terrorism and so much more, the Lord still remains faithful.

The recent rains are evidence that He never abandons his people.

It is with delight that I say thank you to the Almighty for the tremendous relief that this water from heaven has brought in, quenching the parched Earth.

While many may still say the drought has not been broken, and farmers are still in dire need of more rain, let us be thankful for what we have just received.

It is refreshing to smell cleaner air, to hear the tyres of vehicles sloshing through water on the roads and to see green shoots beginning to sprout in our garden.

The bonus of the snow that has fallen close to our city has brought with it much excitement to adults and children alike. This is a blessing from the God of all creation.

We should not forget we are the earthly stewards and custodians of all His creation and we should accept this duty with responsibility.

So then let us conserve water for it is not an unlimited resource. Let us not pollute it and let us not waste it. I appeal to everyone to play his or her role in saving water.

To the Msunduzi Municipality, I challenge council to develop a programme whereby every household can be fitted with a JoJo tank.

I suggest this be offered on an interest-free loan basis, repayable over an extended period and must be professionally fitted at minimal cost to residents.

There will be some loss of revenue to the municipality in terms of reduced water usage, but the benefits will far outweigh this.

Lord Almighty, thank you for the gift of life-giving rain. I pray that You will give us one more thing - “the gift of a grateful heart”.

Ratepayers fed up with poor water supply AS ratepayers of greater Prestbury we are disgusted and frustrated about the continual and now almost daily interruptions to the municipal water supply in the greater Prestbury area.

We experienced a short period of about three weeks when the water supply improved. However, we are now back to the same routine of having no water almost every

second day.

When one calls the call centre they no longer give one a reference number. Why is it so difficult to maintain minimum storage in DH Hill reservoir to keep upper Prestbury supplied with water?

We are aware there is wide-scale wastage of water in Pietermaritzburg due to unpaid water charges, illegal connections, uncontrolled

public standpipes, no co-operation from residents to conserve water, leakages, etc.

As ratepayers we would suggest that the city attend to these problems, rather than leaving us, the ratepayers, high and dry.

Similarities between three faiths are great AN interesting thought occurred to me today about the world’s religions and I thought I should share it.

Judaism, Christianity and Islam, known as the Abrahamic faiths as they all have Abraham in their origins, ironically all have creationism over natural evolution to explain life on Earth.

Strangely, they all seem to have evolved from the first major monotheistic faith, Judaism, to adapt to the societies in which they gained dominance.

Today’s modern Islamic extremists like Isis are behaving in a way that was last seen during the inquisitions of Christianity but in these

violent times no deities emerged to direct or bless those involved.

There are big differences in all three faiths but the underlying similarities are even greater.

For example, in Judaism and Islam, pork is forbidden, but as genetic traits can often skip a generation, it is allowed in Christianity.

I would like to initiate a reader’s debate on this subject. I am no cultural evolutionary expert but could the fact that there are three clearly linked monotheistic faiths not in effect prove that no single creator actually exists?

A business will only prosper if the available resources are optimised. Look at the South African economy as a business — 3,3 million people is not optimisation, it is deceit. South Africans, please use your vote wisely during the upcoming local elections as nothing is free.

From the birth of democracy, the masses have been promised free education, housing and medical treatment. As any competent businessperson knows, nothing is free. Handing out free groceries at your local grocer will result in bankruptcy. The funds have to come from somewhere. So who pays for all the freebees?

In South Africa, there are only 3,3 million taxpayers.

Considering that there are approximately 22 million people within the working age group in our country, it is frightening to think that just 3,3 million people have to pay for corruption, free medical treatment, free education and free housing.

Give thanks for SA’s medical profession IN the course of the past five weeks, I have twice had related causes to be in Hilton Life Hospital, first for two weeks, with five days in ICU, and then for a further single day of tests.

I do want to set on record and pay tribute to the outstanding, professional and remarkable care I saw and received there.

I was deeply impressed by everyone I met, from the physicians and doctors to the matrons and sisters, and the administration department and cleaning staff.

Beyond that, I was inspired to see the new and rainbow South Africa truly working and manifest.

I wondered what made it so special and evident, and concluded that, unlike in our worrying wider society where much is not right because it is each per­ son for themselves, here I saw each person concerned for those more needy and focused on the other.

If the inspiring and selfless example of the medical profession translated out to our wider country, we would be home and dry.

So, pause a moment to salute all those in the medical profession, and give God thanks for them.

Thanks to municipality I WRITE on behalf of the Bromhead Road residents in Pelham, who have asked me to thank the municipality for restoring power to them under difficult circumstances.

It began on Sunday, when half of the residents were left suddenly without power. This situation, I believe, was rampant throughout Pietermaritzburg, no doubt due to the sudden rain after a dry spell.

a spectacular firework display was afforded us by the electrical street pole, which sent out sparks and fireballs, and ended with a huge plume of black smoke and a burnt pole. This, of course, meant that residents were without power.

The Pietermaritzburg Fire Department responded to this and sent out a truck and the staff erected hazard tape around the pole.

On Tuesday night, in the extreme cold and rain, a team from the electricity department fixed the pole, and power was restored to all at around 2.30am.

IGHT ladies battled it out for the title of Pink Lip Sync Battle champion at Victoria Country Club at the weekend.

The competition was the first of its kind and was sold out. Organiser, Judy Umraw, said the event was a great success.

“We’ve had lots of positive feedback. Thank you to everyone for making this a success,” she said.

This was a fund-raiser for Cansa and the proceeds will be donated to the organisation.

Epworth pupil gets the nod for SA Paralympic swimming team CHELSEA PIETERSE

N Epworth matric pupil, Alani Ferreira, has been selected as part of the South African Paralympic swimming team.

Alani will be flying to Rio de Janeiro to swim in the Paralympics on 31 August, competing in the 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley and the 400m freestyle.

Alani, who has a genetic disorder where she has lost her central vision and only has peripheral vision, was selected as the only South African swimmer from Pietermaritzburg.

After years of training and hours spent in the water, Alani received the news of her selec-

tion on 19 July - her 18th birthday.

“It was the best birthday present ever. I was so excited,” she said.

“It still hasn’t properly sunk in and it feels like a dream. It will probably hit me when I am behind the block at the pool just before the gun goes off.”

Alani has been swimming since the age of four and when she saw her older brother competing in galas, she decided that was what she also wanted to do.

“When I was 10, I decided to stop swimming and focus on hockey and tennis, but I was diagnosed with the disorder at age 12,

and was advised to go back to swimming and stop the rest.”

The youngster said now there is not a single day that goes by without her swimming.

“I love it. If I’m stressed it relaxes me and if I cannot swim I get withdrawal symptoms,” she said, laughing.

She said her favourite races are the 100m breaststroke and the 400m freestyle.

“I am confident. My goal is to make it to the finals and by 2020 I want to win a medal.”

Alani said she felt her biggest competition would be the U.S. “They are very

strong and very good.”

In April, Alani broke the African swimming records for the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke and the 100m individual medley.

When she is not in the pool she is either playing the piano or the saxophone while trying to study for finals in between.

“I finish trials a few days before I leave and will miss two of my finals, but supplementary exams have been arranged. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience - it is now or never, and the time is now.”

TWC pupil chosen for cycling tour in Ireland CHELSEA PIETERSE TWC pupil, Sarah Ryan, is flying the Pietermaritzburg flag high as the only girl in the Midlands selected for the Errigal Youth Cycling Tour in Ireland.

Grade 8 pupil Sarah (13), landed in Ireland last week for the event with 15 KwaZulu-Natal cyclists.

She was one of four KZN girls who were selected to cycle on the tour and is the only pupil from the Midlands to be chosen.

The 2016 Errigal Youth Cycling Tour is a three-day race with five countries competing for the title.

“I am very excited about the tour, but also very nervous as it is my first time overseas,” said the teen.

“I know the group I am travelling with well. We are all friends so I am glad for that.”

Voortrekker High School pupils recently got a visit from MPact’s ‘Ron­ nie the Recycling Man’ and Maritsa Gouws, Mrs South Africa 2016 finalist, to encourage them to recycle. MPact is a recycling business that collects any form of paper and cardboard. They dropped off recy­ cling bins for the classrooms and gave each pupil a recy­ cling bag to use to collect paper and cardboard. The Wykeham Collegiate Grade 3 pupils had an outing to the Dairy Day factory where they learnt about how milk and milk products get from the cow to the consumer. At the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, which they visited after­ wards, they learnt about Nelson Mandela and the motivation behind devoting 67 minutes of their time in his honour.

By volunteering one minute for every year of Mandela's public service, people can make a small gesture for those less fortunate.

To end off the second term in a memorable way, the St Charles College Grade 5s spent three days on their tour to Durban. Their days were packed with interesting and educational activities including guided tours, workshops and snorkelling at uShaka, a boat tour around Durban Harbour, a visit to the Sharks Board, Umgeni Bird Park and the man­ groves, a marine study at Treasure Beach and they watched ‘Finding Dory’.

FTER just returning to South Africa, Pietermaritzburg football team, the Young Natalians are celebrating their win in a Futsal tournament in the Netherlands.

The Young Natalians won first place in the four-team tournament in Amsterdam after winning the National Futsal League.

Coach Gregory Nair said: “It was truly a great experience for our guys, a few of whom have never played overseas before.”

The four-team tournament was made up of Dutch teams Asv, Sgraveland and Almere, with Young Natalians being the only team from South Africa.

They have now been invited to return to the Netherlands next year to defend their title.

Nair said he was proud of his team winning their first overseas title.

“The crowd support was amazing and the Dutch supporters were amazed by our quick passing game and the incredible skill of our players, who are physically much smaller than our overseas counterparts,” he said.

The Young Natalians recently won a Futsal tournament in Amsterdam.

The team were sponsored by Pos Service Holland Starter Motors and Alternators, who have now committed to be the official sponsor of the Young Natalians.

The Young Natalians are one of two Pietermaritzburg teams playing in the National Futsal League.

Their last season saw the team

win many accolades as Renaldo Donnelly became the highest goal scorer in the league with 25 goals.

Trevino Pillay was Goalkeeper of the Year and the captain, Simphiwe Mgedezi, won the league’s Best Player.

Nair won Coach of the Year during the previous national league.

JEEP Team’s young multisport athlete , Mikaela Jonsson (19), won her first Olympic Distance Triathlon at race 3 of the Tinman Tri-series in Durban.

Round 3 of the Tinman Tri-series took place at the Suncoast Sundeck on Sunday, 24 July. From the four different races offered, junior triathlon superstar, Mikaela Jonsson, competed in the Ultra Tri Challenge the Olympic Distance Triathlon - a one-kilometre swim, a 30km cycle and a 10km run.

Despite only being back in training for three weeks, Jonsson’s performance was impressive in all three stages. She

placed a close third in the swim with 13m27s, came second in the cycle at 59:21, and again finished second in the run with a time of 43:46, winning in an overall time of 1:58:34, ahead of second-placed Teneal Featherby and third-placed Hayley Mee. Jonnson won women overall and her age category, but as in all triathlons, the transition time taken between legs can mean the difference between winning and losing, as in this race.

Jonnson’s race-time against Featherby was slower overall by 8 seconds, but 1:03 faster than Featherby in transition time.

TWC cyclist selected to represent SA and KZN

Howick High School were visited by two soccer celebrities, Lucas Radebe and Mark Fish, recently. They spoke to pupils at a special assembly about the importance of education and shared information about the Vodacom NXT LVL competition, which is focused on soccer for this phase, where pupils can win a full scholarship to Tuks sports school. Boys and girls soccer teams were treated to a skills workshop with the sports stars and were delighted with the donation of new soccer balls from Vodacom.

Hilton College pupil completes Berg Canoe Marathon

Sarah Ryan, a Grade 8 pupil at The Wykeham Collegiate, has been selected to represent South Africa and KZN Cycling at the 2016 Errigal Youth Cycling Tour in Ireland. Fifteen youth cyclists from KZN will be racing over three days with five countries competing for podium honours.

Sarah is the only cyclist from the Midlands who has been selected.

TWC pupil earns prestigious hockey titles

Hamish Lovemore (right) from Hilton College, completed the epic Berg Canoe Marathon. It is raced over four stages covering 240km from Paarl to Velddrif on the West Coast. It is one of the longest and toughest competitive paddling challenges around. The first day is 62km, second day 46km, third day 75km and the fourth day is 60km. Hamish was the first U18, and achieved 15th overall.

Jodie Conolly, a Grade 10 pupil at The Wykeham Collegiate, was selected for, and captained, the KwaZulu­Natal Inland U16A hock­ ey team. The team were placed fifth at the recent inter­provincial ournament and Jodie was named ‘Defender of the Tournament’. At the tournament, Jodie was select­ ed for the U16A South African hockey team and earned her national colours playing in a quadrangular tournament against Australia, Zimbabwe and Namibia in Pretoria where she was also named ‘Player of the Series’.

Longest Day race this weekend F

OLLOWING many years during which Collegians Harriers Longest Day carried the flag, circuit racing has made a comeback in KZN. The 21st edition of Longest Day, run on a grass track of 333 metres over 12 hours, is being staged at Collegians Club on Saturday, 6 August.

Following the success of the 100 Capital Classic basket of events, which started in 2013 as a 100 mile journey with 50 and 20 mile options, Queensburgh Harriers recently hosted a circuit event on the fields of their school. Pietermaritzburg long distance runner, Deon Stumke (56) rounded off a challenging race, heading a field of 10 runners in the 24-hour category, when he completed 100 miles (161 laps of the one kilometre course), stopping the clock at 22:58 minutes.

After his win, Stumke said he “thoroughly enjoyed the race and will definitely be back next year”. He has been a regular participant in the Longest Day where he has his

Circuit racing allows the option of staging many events in one. Leading the field, and raising the bar, annually, in this regard, is the local 100 Capital Classic. Presented on a one- kilometre tar circuit in Alexandra Park, the hosts, Capital Running, offer everything from six hours to six days.

This event has, in three years, provided South African and African Women’s records in both the 24-hour (Hazel Moller) and 48hour (Melanie Delainey) categories and, in 2015, Johan van der Merwe equalled the South African six-day record of 815km and Kobi Oren set a new Israeli record when winning, with a distance of 818km.

SPAR ladies race this weekend THE Pietermaritzburg branch of the Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation, is once again the official race charity of the Maritzburg SPAR Women’s 10/5km which takes place around Alexandra Park on Sunday, 7 August.

For every entry R2 will go to the foundation, which is a support group of parents with children with cancer, who support parents and children with cancer.

“We rely heavily on donations and financial support from the public and other sources so we can provide free board and lodging and other invaluable services to children with cancer and their families.

“We are grateful to everyone who participates in this race for the

contribution they are making to this service,” said Agie Govender, Choc KZN regional manager.

Entries are limited to 4 000 and the 10km distance is open to those from age 14. The five kilometre is open for those from age nine, the age restrictions being applicable on the day of the competition.

Entry is R90 for the 10km licensed athletes and for the fivekilometre runners.

Entry for non-licensed athletes is R100, the extra R10 includes a temporary licence for the day.
