Shocking attitude to rape common in SA – study >> Around the globe 120 million girls experience forced intercourse

LMOST one in 10 South Africans believe that forced sexual intercourse is appropriate in certain situations.

This is according to renowned market research company, Ipsos’s latest Pulse of the People study.

Ipsos found that the majority of South Africans (58%) agreed with the statement, “it is always wrong to have sex with someone against his or her will”.

However, eight percent of adults disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statement.

Ipsos South Africa’s director of public affairs, Mari Harris, said they posed the question to different age groups across race groups in South Africa. The participants in the survey had to say whether they agreed,

strongly agreed, disagreed or strongly disagreed with the statements .

“Although a firm majority of 58% strongly agreed, overall eight percent of adults in South Africa either strongly disagreed or disagreed with the statement,” she said.

Young people, aged between 15 and 17, expressed themselves as especially strongly opposed to forced intercourse.

A total of 3 861 face-to-face interviews were conducted with randomly selected South Africans for the survey.

The interviews were done in the homes and home languages of the interviewees by trained fieldworkers from all population groups.

“Interviews were done all over the country, from metropolitan areas to deep rural areas. This methodology

ensured that the results are representative of the views of the universe [of the study] and that findings can be weighted and projected to the universe,” Harris said.

“According to United Nations statistics, approximately one in every three women (35%) worldwide experiences physical violence and/or sexual violence at some point in her life.”

“Around the globe, approximately 120 million girls experience forced intercourse or other forms of forced sexual acts at some point. Against this background, South Africa is thus not unique when it comes to the sexual abuse of women and children,” Harris said.

Respondents were also asked how well the South African government was handling violence against women

and children. Only about four in every 10 (38%) adults said the government was handling the issue “very well” or “fairly well”.

The study further delved into the workings of men and women and how far society had come in achieving equality.

According to the study, almost a third (30%) of South African adults said that “a woman’s place is in the house”.

This figure was up from 24% in 2015.

“It is clear that we are very far from achieving the equality specified in our Constitution. However, it is not necessarily older people, like one would conventionally believe, who feel the strongest about this, but rather those in the 35-49 age group where 32% agreed with the statement,” said Harris.

In addition, 31% of people in the 3549 age group (and 30% of South

African adults overall) agreed with the statement “when jobs are scarce, men should have more rights to jobs than women”.

Harris suspected this was linked to competition for scarce job opportunities.

Other findings indicated the existence of a deep-seated and growing problem concerning perceptions about the abilities of women.

This was reflected in opinions about education for girls and about women’s abilities as political leaders.

In many instances, women themselves did not have confidence in their own abilities.

“The active promotion of gender equality can be one of the most important building blocks in uniting South African men and women of all population groups,” said Harris.

Pietermaritzburg Child Welfare director Julie Todd, who works with rape victims, said the results of the survey directly linked to the “patriarchal society we live in today”.

She said the hierarchy in most organisations tended to be male.

“Society shows that men and boys dominate, and women are subservient.

“This, and the fact that we live in a very violent era, is the problem in society,” Todd said.

Nkosi, known as “Mr Bengs”, started the contest in 2010 because he had a vision of scouting young, new, unknown faces and introducing them to the world of modelling.

“The first contest was held at the City Royal Hotel, and when we began we had very few sponsors.”

City Royal Hotel, Louisiana Spur, Capture Crew Studios, DJ Thulani, Zoe’s Nail and Beauty Salon, 033 Lifestyle, Parasol Studios were some of the sponsors at the time.

That year Zandile Thusi and Qiniso Sithole were crowned female and male winners respectively.

In 2014 Pearl Cele and Thabiso Buthelezi won and last year Xolisile Ngubane and Sibusiso Dlamini were crowned the winners.

Nkosi said the contest is open to models of all races and gender between the age of 18 and 35.

“They must have a South African bar-coded identity document, must not be married or engaged or pregnant and be at school or university and/or presently working.”

The contest is an opportunity for young people to get life skills training, tools that are necessary in their pursuit of a career.

One of the perks of the contest was that winners get to rub shoulders with the who’s who of the entertainment industry.

“They attend social events like Metro FM Music Awards, Royalty Soapie Awards, Future Leaders Youth Awards, Miss South Africa, South African Music Awards and the Durban July, to name a few.”

VER the past few months, Bluff Meat Supply took the initiative and started collecting old books and old uniforms to recycle them for those in need.

Using their weekly advertisements in the Maritzburg Fever, they requested the public to drop off books and uniforms they no longer use.

Drop-off points were Victoria Road and Market Road branches.

The Pietermaritzburg community donated a bakkie load of books.

“We have had an awesome response from the public and thank

Bluff Meat Supply gives back everyone who donated books for our book drive,” said Mark Lederle, Bluff Meat Supply shareholder.

The books were delivered to Khwezi Primary School on Tuesday, 2 August and Lederle also handed out anti- poaching pamphlets to pupils.

“We will see what we can use for our children and then recycle to other schools that might be able to use what we cannot,” said principal Constance Mbanjwa.

She thanked Bluff Meat Supply and the public for their donations.

Netcare cancer support group inaugurated NETCARE St Anne’s Hospital, in association with Cansa, opened a new cancer support group to provide patients with a safe and empathetic environment for sharing experiences.

“Coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis, and the fight against cancer, is a daunting prospect for anyone, whether it is from the perspective of the person who has cancer or their loved ones.

“Social and emotional support is a vital aspect of dealing with the disease and developing coping strat­ egies. Our message to those suffering from cancer is ‘no one fights alone’,” said Netcare St Anne’s Hospital general manager, Louis Joubert.

The support group, which met for the first time on Tuesday, 26 July, was led by an experienced social worker, who provided practical information and guidance on cancer, the various treatment options, minimising the side effects of treatments and other tips. The support group also facilitates discussion and shared insights on the emotional burden of the disease, both for the individual and their caregivers, and strategies for coping with this stress in order to maintain strength for healing.

“The aim of this support group is to allow those who are further along their journey to share the insights that have helped them to keep strong in the face of this disease,” said Joubert.

He said the key outcome of the meetings is to help people overcome the emotional and mental hurdles presented by cancer in order to better focus on life and their loved ones, to be strong and fight against the disease.

“One of the most important messages we hope people will take away from these support groups is that cancer is a disease that can affect anyone. While certain behaviours may be associated with increased risk for certain kinds of cancers, there are also complex environmental and genetic factors at play that scien­ tists are only beginning to understand,” Joubert said.

The cancer support groups will be held monthly at Netcare St Anne’s. Space is limited. PMB jazz festival, a blast >> The festival showcased all music genres, including jazz, Afro­pop, Maskandi and hip­hop

USIC enthusiasts at the third annual Pietermaritzburg Jazz Festival at the Golden Horse Casino on Saturday were spoilt for choice with the amazing line-up of musicians.

Put together by Starlight Promotions, the festival has become popular on the city’s music calendar with music lovers from all over converging at the venue to have fun.

Back by popular demand, and among one of the headliners at the festival this year was legendary couple, Caiphus Semenya and Letta Mbulu, who had the crowd wanting more. Mbulu and Semenya were part of the inaugural festival in 2014.

Mbulu performed Music In the Air, Nomalizo, Everybody Sing Along and they did a duet of their 1980 hit, Ndiphendule.

Semenya opened his set with old-time favourite Nomalanga and had everyone on their feet when he sang Angelina and Matswale.

After his performance he said because of time constraints he could not perform all his songs.

“We need about two hours for a full set to be able to perform everyone’s favourites, but unfortunately, time was limited and we could only do a couple of songs.”

Despite the name, the festival showcased all music genres, including jazz, Afro-pop, Maskandi and hip-hop.

Award-winning hip-hop artist Cassper Nyovest performed some of his popular songs like Phumakim, Malume, Mama I Made It and Ngud.

One of the festival organisers, Brian Zuma, said the festival was a success.

“From our side, we are happy with the success of the event. All the artists showed up and performed very well.

There was not a single incident reported, people came in and enjoyed themselves. It was a happy atmosphere.”

The number of people attending could not be confirmed at the time of going to press because the organisers were waiting for official figures from Computicket.

Letter writer gets it all wrong

THE article “Honest one’s not yet elected”, by Zipho Makhoba (Maritzburg Echo, 21 July) refers.

It is unfortunate that Makhoba would write an article about a matter as serious as corruption and then not check his facts.

Minister Lindiwe Sisulu was not involved in the so-called “Travelgate scandal” at all. The misuse of travel vouchers was committed by certain Members of Parliament who used Parliament’s travel agents.

Sisulu was a minister at the time and her travel arrangements were done by her office and not by Parliament.

Makhoba would have been able to verify that with a simple search, unless his intention was

to attack the minister’s credibility and question her integrity.

Advocate Mpofu has never been a Member of Parliament and Julius Malema only became a Member of Parliament in 2014.

Makhoba should also note that the Land Act was passed in 1913, not 1912, it is Pallo Jordan, not Parlor and Carl Niehaus, not Carlos.

These are sloppy mistakes that should not happen when you write about corruption, but can probably be excused. However, accusing a minister of corruption when there is absolutely no truth in it is a very serious matter and I expect that Makhoba will correct this.

Advertising at airports THE Inkatha Freedom Party is deeply concerned about the advertising space allocated to the African National Congress at our international airports.

When walking into the arrival terminals at these airports it appears as though one has walked into the ANC campaign headquarters.

The IFP finds it unacceptable that one political party is given such privileges.

We understand that the Airports Company of South Africa (Acsa) is legally and financially autonomous, and operates under commercial law, but it is majority owned by the South African government, and as such should not show preference to any one particular political party. From a commercial point of view, we know that Acsa derives some of its revenue through advertising.

If Acsa is making advertising space in airports available to political parties, then it should have been advertised openly so that all political parties could have equal opportunity to purchase advertising space. It now appears that the ANC has been given preferential treatment by Acsa, and this is unacceptable.

We therefore question the advertising policy of Acsa and demand to know why the ANC has been given preference to advertise at airports.

In the interests of democracy and transparency, we also demand to know whether the advertising space was put out to tender, and if so, we would like details of such.

In the dark about terror warnings THE recent warnings by the U.S. government of possible terror attacks by Islamic militants on Americans in South Africa should not be taken lightly by the South African security and intelligence agencies.

The relevant anti-terrorism authorities should immediately obtain the evidence and information in order to put measures in place to prevent such attacks. Very often, governments issue warnings regarding a potential terrorist attack without giving the public any credible information, which leaves people without any knowledge of what to expect or do.

Certainly, every effort should be made to subvert and prevent terrorist activities but this must be done responsibly. These questionable threats actually hurt us in many ways. Not only do they increase panic and fear, but they also waste valuable resources that could be used in

fighting real crime and protecting citizens.

Moreover, such allegations can prove to be destructive, particularly in the minds of ordinary South Africans who have little or no knowledge about terrorism.

Although we should be vigilant about terrorist activities, we should refuse to be terrorised by fear mongers and mischief makers.

Think critically, rationally and be careful of groups or politicians trying to use terrorism to advance a political aim or mission.

The hyperbole about “Islamic terrorism” post- September 11 is a metaphor, and the more readily we accept it, the more readily we compromise the principles of liberty, human dignity, democracy and the rule of law.

He joined the DCO Matiwane Youth Movement, a revolutionary youth organisation named after the revolutionary, DCO Matiwane.

The UDF called on communities to organise themselves into various sector organisations and Dumsani as one of the founders of Edendale Youth Organisation. He was also instrumental in the formation of civic organisations at Imbali and Edendale, which were at the forefront during the rent boycotts and the struggle against exploitation and poor service provision. He was a revolutionary, a freedom fighter, a political educator (commissar), an ICT technocrat and community activist. Some of his teachings helped the youth of Edendale and Imbali, recruited by organisations under the UDF to understand and to champion the vision of a desired South Africa.

This enabled them to contextualise the challenges faced by our communities under the then apartheid South Africa.

Through his leadership, we were introduced to the four pillars of our struggle - the mass democratic struggle, the armed struggle, the international support and the struggle for the proletariat.

Our understanding of our struggles helped us to understand, through mass democratic struggles, the role of major players and motive forces. Through the armed struggle, we learnt the importance of maintaining the value of life while participating in a just war without becoming “haters” and “destroyers”.

The Freedom Charter was studied and understood as the minimum benchmark for a better South Africa. Our understanding of our vision for the South Africa we desired, helped us to understand our role as young people, and to understand and respect our leaders and their leadership.

During various operations we were involved i we were guided by Son of Man and that helped us not to destroy ourselves. This guided us properly towards achieving a truly democratic, non-racial and nonsexist unitary South Africa.

We salute his family for allowing us to have Dumsani in our midst and we say the hero has fallen, but his spirit lives on, and we must pick up his spear and advance the course and values that he stood for, and celebrate his short-lived life.

UMSANI Samuel Phungula, a 49-year-old antiapartheid activist and cadre of uMkhonto we Sizwe and the younger brother of late Major “Bhi” Bhekinkosi Phungula has died in a mysterious accident in his bedroom.

He shares his Bisley house with his brother.

He was admitted to St Anne’s Hospital in the early hours of Saturday on 23 July, bleeding from a head injury and unable to speak or to explain the cause of his injury.

Since admission to hospital, he had been on life support until Wednesday, 27 July when it was switched off by his brother after the hospital realised that if he survived he would be brain damaged.

The community of Edendale and Imbali are now officially informed about the loss of one of their sons, known by his revolutionary spirit and selflessness.

In the eighties, when there were few community activists (amashoshozela omphakathi), at the peak of the oppression of the apartheid government, Dumsani was already unyamazana and ijoni loMkhonto we Sizwe. He laid the foundation for the struggle of Pietermaritzburg with Skhumbuzo Ngwenya, Mduduzi Ndlovu, Muzi “Son of Man” Thusi, AS Chetty, Dr Chota Motala, etc., all fallen heroes.

While studying IT in Pretoria, through underground missions, he interacted with Mac Maharaj, the late Judge Langa and senior members of the ANC, who were members of “underground machinery”.

Soon after lauching the UDF on 20 August, 1983, at Mitchells Plein, Dumsani was a politically active pupil at

Acclaimed dance teacher to host PMB workshop

Bernd Knappe describes this form of dance as ‘where people get lost in sensations and unclear boundaries’.

WORLD-RENOWNED dance teacher and instructor, Bernd Knappe, will visit Pietermaritzburg to teach and facilitate workshops as part of his South African tour.

In these workshops Knappe, originally from Germany, will be focusing on contemporary dance contact improvisation.

On his website he describes this

form of dance as a “shapeless undertoned movement practice, where people get lost in sensations and unclear boundaries”.

The workshops will run until 21 August with a single class lasting three hours.

Knappe will also be conducting his workshops in Impendle, Bloemfontein, Gauteng and Northwest, and classes will accommodate between six and 40 people.

“Everyone is invited, no matter what restrictions or abilities. The workshops will include playful lectures of dance and improvisation techniques and a powerful introduction of the basic principles of contact improvisation.”

New craft beer hang­out to be launched A WELCOME addition to the “Midlands experience” will be the launch of Balgowan Brewery on Saturday, 13 August, a one­day festival in the “Mill Sessions” series offering live music, craft beer and family fun.

The open­day launch will be from 11am until 6pm, accompanied by music from The Silver Band, Salty Dog, and Duncan Park. The music line­up will segue to discs from radio deejay, DJ E. Balgowan Brewery is at Midlands For­ est Lodge, between Nottingham Road and Howick, and is a company registered by two young entrepreneurs.

After months of experimentation they have scaled up and perfected their brewing process with recipes for several types of beers.

Balgowan Brewery creates quality and authentic beers using local as well as imported ingredients.

The Mill Sessions is a series of music­ themed events that Midlands corner­ stones Di and Terry Acres have been running mostly from their Caversham Mill for the past five years.

Athlone Primary School Grade 3 pupils had fun learning about the water cycle through an experiment which consisted of water, shaving cream and food colouring. The children each had a turn to do the experiment.

St John’s DSG School pupils from Grade R to Grade 7 had a special ‘election’ of their own. Having learnt all about municipal elections, as well as discuss­ ing ballot papers, spoilt papers and the fact that one’s vote is a secret, the girls made their own ID documents, complete with their thumb prints, to vote for a charity they wish to support with a civvies day next term. Lebogang Phalula won this year’s Maritzburg SPAR Women’s race.

EBOGANG Phalula flew through the finish line in the Maritzburg SPAR Women’s 10/5km race on Sunday in a respectable time of 34:41 – slicing 1;29 seconds off last year’s winning time.

Phalula’s only quest was to win the race.

“I managed to break away from the seeded runners in the first kilometre of the race, and I was pretty much alone from there on. I asked my friend Cornelia [Joubert] to stick with me for this race, but she was unable to.”

She said this was her first Maritzburg race.

“I was not expecting so many hills, which were pretty tough, but I did enjoy it especially from the eight- kilometre mark where it was pretty much a downhill stride for me – it felt as though I was floating.”

There is much excitement in the Phalula household as her sister Lebo is representing South Africa at the Rio Olympics marathon on Sunday.

Finishing 75 seconds behind Phalulua, Jenet Dlamini from Umzimkhulu crossed the line in a time of 35;56 followed by Cornelia Joubert 45 seconds later, in 36;41.

Dlamini stated that overall she was happy with her race, “It was a tough run having run the Hammarsdale 10km last week so my legs were a bit tired.”

It was also Joubert’s first experience at the Maritzburg SPAR Women’s race, and although she was unfamiliar with the route, she was a iming for a top five position.

“I was pleased with my result and my time even after resting a bit this week as I had pushed myself in the 21.1km SA champs in PE, where I finished 10th last weekend.”

There were a record number of 4039 runners this year who competed in ideal running conditions.

“Well done to everyone who came out to brave the slight chill in the air. It was particularly festive this year, perhaps young and old alike have been inspired by the spirit of the Olympic Games in Rio. Whatever the reason, it was a joy to see so many people coming out in force to participate and have so much fun,” said MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson.

Lowell Mndaweni

HE death of well known former South African Men’s basketball team player Lowell Mndaweni (40) from Sobantu, has been described as a “loss for the basketball community”.

Mndaweni, who was buried on Saturday after a funeral service at Sobantu sports grounds, died last weekend after a short illness.

head coach of Duzi Royals ahead of the upcoming season of the Basketball National League. His friend and former teammate, Flosh Ngwenya, said Mndaweni was always above the rest on the basketball court.

“When we first set foot on a basketball court there was certain charisma about him. He was great and we knew he was going to be a great player. He carried a smile and was a true gentleman of the game. We lived in a flat together for more than five years and shared many great times.”

Mndaweni was recognised by young and old.

“He was a mega-superstar, but would walk in the street and greet everyone with a smile, signing autographs for the children.

“He didn’t look at himself as a superstar - he looked at himself as a simple guy from Sobantu.”

Duzi Royals captain Cyril Shabalala said Mndaweni was asked to take over the team last season but he refused.

“This season he was ready [to take over], but unfortunately, now he’s gone. I grew up watching him play, and for me he was one of the older guys I respected in the game.

“For him to be part of the Duzi Royals structure and impart his knowledge to players was great for us.”

Shabalala said Mndaweni’s death came as a shock to the team.

“When I heard the news on Sunday I couldn’t believe it. I had to make a couple of phone calls to make sure. I had spoken to him on Friday about what he wanted to achieve for the team and how he wanted me to assist him in making sure he achieved his goals. He was very humble and competitive.”

Mndaweni’s basketball career began in 1994 at the then Alexandra Boys’ High, where he played for the first team.

He then went on to represent Midlands schools. He became a household name in KZN at the height of their dominance in SA premier basketball league, which led to their rivalry with Gauteng.

In 2001 he was selected to represent the country in basketball in the World Student Games in Beijing. He then played for the national senior basketball team from 2003.

His involvement in the game stretched beyond the lines as he steadily gave back to his province as a mentor and coach at various city schools.
