MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

TUDENTS from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, who came out to support the 11 detained burst into tears last Friday in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court public gallery upon hearing the 11 will remain in custody for another 10 days.

The 11 students - Wakeni Chuma, Siyathemba Magwaza, Minenhle Sibisi, Ntabane Kopedi, Mayibongwe Ngcobo, Palisa Langa, Lindokuhle Mhlongo, Thembeka Mpanza, Princess Shabalala, Siyabonga Mbambo and Noluthando Lubanya from the Pietermaritzburg campus were detained on 22 September following a standoff with the police during protests over tertiary education fee hikes.

The students are facing charges of public violence, failing to comply with police, assault and malicious damage to property.

Prosecutor Pet Davids said the state had video footage showing the violent behaviour of the 11 students at UKZN. “They were all seen throwing stones and bottles at the police. This is a direct contravention of the court order granted to the university indicating that students must desist from malicious behaviour. They also damaged the university’s property, police vehicles and motor vehicles.”

Davids argued that the state was opposing bail because the university premises were in danger and there was no guarantee of the safety of other students should the 11 be released.

“Since these students have been arrested, there has been peace at the university and lectures are continuing as per normal. If we release them on bail, we cannot guarantee this type of behaviour will stop.”

She said if the violent protests continued there was a high possibility of shutting down the university.

“This will impact others, who won’t get to write their exams and they will lose a year of studies. If this matter is not taken in a serious light, more serious cases will be brought before this court,” she said.

‘Advocate Mazwi Dlamini, representing the 11, said the state had no “real reasons” for opposing bail.

“The state says they are a danger to the university, but there is no real proof any of them damaged the property. This constitutes hearsay,

Dlamini argued that keeping the students detained without bail would be unconstitutional stating that none of them had previous convictions or pending cases.

Magistrate Mamsy Boikhutso said she wanted to look at the video footage the state claims showed the 11 throwing stones and bottles at the university before she could finalise the bail application and come up with a decision.

TEAM of police detectives, fighting for abused women and children, have described their daily challenges and what it takes to catch criminals.

Plessislaer’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) 22-man unit of detectives, led by Captain Themba Kunene, overcome major obstacles each day, from tracing rapists to consoling their weeping victims.

Describing the crimes most prominent in their jurisdiction - Bulwer, Himeville, Mid-Illovo, Thornville, Taylor’s Halt, Richmond and Plessislaer - Kunene said abuse against women and children remains rife.

“We get a lot of assault cases where children are victims and the violence is perpetrated by their parents and family members. There are also cases of abandoned children,” Kunene said.

“Rapists are mostly people known to the victim.”

Describing their challenges when investigating a case, Kunene said

many victims withdraw cases after the family puts pressure on them or in some cases, the victims or their families are paid to drop the charges.

“There is also still a perception that a victim may be judged, stigmatised and humiliated by the police and by the courts. This makes them reluctant to report incidents,” he said.

• Report cases immediately after they have occurred.

• If frequenting taverns and pubs, go in a group and do not walk home alone during the early hours of the morning.

• Do not leave your drinks unattended.

• Remember that anybody can be a perpetrator of sexual crimes, be it a teacher or a close family member.

• Parents must observe their children and not ignore what they say.

Museums and pupils celebrate heritage The welcome rain last week did not deter the KwaZulu­Natal and Msunduzi museums from celebrat­ ing Heritage Day. The two come together each year to host their annual Heritage Day street pa­ rade. The colourful march through the CBD was followed by a programme at the KZN Museum.

Pupils from Russell High, Enati Primary, Dindi Primary, Shri Vishnu Primary, Nsikayethu Primary, Deccan Road Primary, Fezokuhle Primary and Allandale Primary took part in the initiative. by invitation. Pupils chose to cele­ brate their heritage by presenting posters, performing traditional dances and poetry recitals on what heritage means to them.

FTER surviving an abusive relationship that almost robbed her of her life, Maureen Zamagatsheni Ndlovu has written a book. to inspire other abuse victims. on how to find healing.

Ndlovu’s book Connecting the Dots …

Backwards relates the trauma and pain she suffered at the hands of her former boyfriend and her near death experience after he beat her to a pulp and left her for dead.

“The abuse had been going on for a while, but the incident that almost took my life hap­ pened in November 2011. My then boyfriend assaulted me for two hours, he raped me, strangled me with my dreadlocks and a belt and then smashed a computer tower on my head.”

Ndlovu said as she was being beaten she lost consciousness.

“In his mind he thought I was dead, he drove me to a clinic near where we were staying in Midrand to dump my body in a parking lot.”

She said a security guard at the clinic found her and took her to a hospital where she was treated for extensive injuries.

Two days after regaining consciousness, Ndlovu said she began piecing together the details of the night she was assaulted.

“I couldn’t remember much of what happened. Everyone at the hospital thought I had been a victim of a hijacking. I prayed to God to help me remember the details of the night I was assaulted, and I did.”

threatened to kill her son if she reported the matter to the police.

“Like any abused person I was scared and wanted to forget about that night and move on with my life, so I didn’t report him. I had nightmares, I was addicted to sleeping pills, I suffered from depression and had to be ad­ mitted in a psychiatric hospital for three months.”

Ndlovu relived the trauma when she was raped again by another man and impregnated with her second child in 2013.

“It was very hard to go through it again, but I found that writing about my traumatic ex­ periences was therapeutic, which is how this book came about. It helped me heal and I want to use it to help other battered women in situations like mine.”

She said Connecting the Dots …

Backwards is a memoir about heal­ ing and forgiveness.

“It is very hard for women to escape the clutches of abusive partners, but I want them to seek help. They are the only ones who can put an end to the abuse. The book is meant to empower them to take their lives back before it is too late,” she said.

Georgetown High history retold in new book

HE MZALA Nxumalo Centre for the Study of South African Society on Tuesday officially launched a book on the first black high school in Pietermaritzburg, Georgetown High.

The book titled Strive for Excellence: A Social and Political History of Georgetown High School was launched at the school in Edendale and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande delivered a keynote address.

Addressing current and former pupils, Nzimande, who matriculated from Georgetown in 1975, said he was very proud of the school’s historical background.

“I still have fond memories of the school after 41 years. History is important and that is why it was important for this book to come to fruition. The Cubans say a nation that

does not know its history has no future. I am very passionate about local history and believe Edendale is rich with local history and Georgetown is part of that history.”

Nzimande said pupils should be encouraged to pursue history related careers.

“As the government, we must not make the mistake of forgetting about subjects like history. It is important in the preservation of our stories.”

He said he would like to see a second book with selected profiles of luminaries the school has produced over the years published.

The book, written by the Mzala Nxumalo Centre CEO, Dr Bheki Mngomezulu, is the first book to be published by the centre since its inception last year.

Mngomezulu said the book focuses on historical accounts of the school and explores its future prospects.

“The book takes you down memory lane from when the school was established in Ashdown. When reading it you will find sections that will make you laugh and at the same time some events that unfolded will make you cry.”

He said at a broader level the book looks at the political and social life within which the school evolved.

“There are passages in the book that capture the seven day war that took place in 1990 and the relationship between the ANC, UDF, and Cosatu. It is not just a historical book, but a critical analysis of how the school came to be what it is today.”

Rabies comes in two forms, furious or dumb, she said. Although it is common for pet owners to take particular notice of the furious form that causes the animals to become aggressive, owners need to also look out for the dumb form when then animal becomes subdued and lethargic.

“The furious form is usually easy to identify, the animals act excitable, aggressive and salivate profusely. The more dangerous form is the so-called dumb form, where animals get weaker, struggle to swallow and eventually die.

“People do not often associate this with any danger so the animal never gets tested for rabies and exposed people don’t get treated properly. By the time the people get sick a few months later, it’s too late,” said Van Aardt.

South African law states that all dogs and cats must be vaccinated for rabies at three months, one to nine months later and then every three years.

Rabies is usually included in the normal annual vaccinations at a veterinarian, but the state offers the vaccine for free.

“The only way to defeat rabies is to understand it, to know what to look out for and to vaccinate dogs and cats.

There is no cure. This Samaritan that took this dog to the vet for the family probably saved their lives,” said Van Aardt.

Allerton State Veterinary administers free rabies vaccinations between 2pm to 4pm every Friday.

CASE of rabies has been confirmed in Pietermaritzburg

by Allerton State Veterinary last

week.

The dog, which was treated last Monday at Chase Valley Veterinary Clinic, belonged to a family in Sweetwaters, who rescued the little puppy from the street a few weeks ago.

“According to the family it was doing really well, gaining weight and was very friendly. Suddenly it stopped eating. On Sunday [25 September] evening they posted a post on Facebook urging the public to help as their puppy was sick and they didn’t have the money to treat it,” said Estee van Aardt, Chase Valley vet.

According to Van Aardt, Derick dos Santos, a recent Mr South Africa finalist and passionate animal rescue activist, offered to pay for the family’s vet fees at Chase Valley Vet, where he is a client.

“The little pup was quite flat, its eyes were closed and it was struggling to open its mouth. There was quite a lot of saliva. There were some muscle tremors in the face. The biggest differential diagnosis for a puppy like this would be canine distemper virus, and a puppy this sick would usually have a very small chance of surviving.

“Because it is contagious to other dogs we decided to put the pup to sleep.

We sent the body to Allerton state vet laboratory as any dog that has had no known vaccinations showing strange signs needs to be treated as possible rabies.

“They contacted us on Tuesday [27

Rabies Rabies is a controlled disease in South Africa. If there is an outbreak the state veterinarian takes over and makes sure the necessary peo­ ple are treated and tries to control spread by finding all in­contact ani­ mals.

All mammals can get rabies.

Some species are more resistant to it. Domestic animals bitten by jackal or mongoose is often a way it is transferred. Rabies is a virus that is stored in the salivary glands and

transmitted mostly via bite wounds, but saliva on an open cut can also be infected, It does not survive in the environment.

If you get bitten by a dog, the first thing you need to do is to wash your wound under running water, preferably with a disinfec­ tant. Find out about the animal’s vaccination status, if the animal is fully vaccinated then it should not be a problem. If it is unknown the animal can be placed under quaran­

tine and monitored for signs. Defini­ tive diagnosis can only be made by sending the brain away for testing, so it cannot be diagnosed on a live animal.

Medical professionals have dif­ ferent protocols for treating bite wounds, but they need to know about the status of the animal to choose the correct one. If an animal is confirmed positive for rabies ­ all animals and people involved need to be contacted.

ON Tuesday, I participated in a multifaith meeting for peace at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg.

Although I do not condone violence and the destruction of property, students have a genuine grievance with regards to the high cost of tertiary education because most genuinely cannot afford the fees.

A university degree is very costly and less privileged students, especially black students, who come from historically disadvantaged households, cannot fund the cost of

OMRADES Marathon Association officially opened the new and improved Comrades House Museum last Friday.

The two-storey museum incorporates all elements of the race from the history of the race to the route to honouring dedicated runners and supporters. The new museum uses interactive technology adding a different dimension to the museum.

There is a treadmill that can be used by visitors to give them a taste of when it is like climbing some of the more difficult hills in the race and televisions and infographics add to the experience.

The museum, which was first opened 28 years ago, was in need of an upgrade in order to bring the museum into the 21st century.

Speaking at the opening, Jeff Minnaar, chairman of the CMA heritage and traditions committee, said the upgrade was done to ensure that the museum was up to date and a true representation of the race as a whole.

“The museum has stood the test of time. We have made sure that the history of the race has been preserved.

While the old museum was wonderful, we needed something new that would attract and appeal to the younger generation.

“The museum is now more interactive, uses modern technology and has received an all round facelift.

“We wanted to create an environment where visitors can share in the experiences of the runners, and that is what we tried to give them,” he said.

The upgrade, which took 10 months, is still a work in progress with a few finishing touches and extras to

On the bottom floor of the museum there is a room dedicated to the history of the race, with memorabilia from various Comrades greats, and a record of the race from each generation.

In another room there is the route of the race, with an interactive television showing a recording of the

race, a treadmill to experience the infamous Polly Shortts and a “selfie” wall for visitors to take pictures.

There is also a room dedicated to green-number runners which honours them and has their names on plaques on the wall.

The wall at the staircase has significant memories of the changes of Comrades from the first race, taking

visitors through each of the milestones that Comrades has achieved.

Upstairs has a charity shop where merchandise can be bought and a room honouring all the volunteers that help each Comrades to become a success every year. The CMA boardroom continues to be a part of the museum as well.

“We will continue to enforce the

history of the race and the value of the organisation.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase Comrades and I’m sure our founding father would be proud and his history will live on for years to come,” said CMA chairman, Macdonald Chitja.

Comrades House Museum is open to the public, and entry is free.

IVE students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) last Tuesday “gave back” to the Khayelethu Children’s home in Pietermaritzburg.

Bachelor of Technology students, Bangcinile Mbutuma, Nqobile Mabaso, Ivory Ndebele, Nozipho Shandu and Zuzile Msimang went to the home to share their knowledge after being assigned a project to establish a community based initiative.

The group decided to give back to the home after their research indicated that young women in orphanages lack important information that can assist them in conquering challenges and the various perspectives about being a young woman.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mabaso said they discussed self-love, peer pressure, the importance of education and personal hygiene with the home girls.

“We had an informal session where these topics were addressed, and questions from the young girls were answered by the team.

“After the session each girl was presented with a hamper of hygiene essentials such as roll on, deodorant, toothbrush, soap, sanitary towels, school shoes and career guidance handbooks,” she said.

Their objective is to take this project to other orphanages around Pietermaritzburg said Mabaso.

“Doing this project has opened our eyes and we realise we can make a difference and the sooner we start sharing our knowledge and experiences we can save many young girls from temptation.

“We want to see these young girls making a difference in their communities one day in leadership positions,” she said.

Mabaso said they will keep track of the girls’ progress and measure the impact of the initiative in order to determine whether the social empowerment has a lasting impact on them.

TOTAL of 2000 men, women and children braved the breezy cool weather on Sunday to participate in the first Color Run to come to Pietermaritzburg starting and ending at Epworth School culminating in an alfresco family fun party on the school lawns. Called ‘the happiest 5km on the planet’ – runners and walkers were blasted with colour at inter­ vals during the 5km fun run­walk.

A similar event will be held in Durban on Sunday, 9 October.

T is obvious the knives are out for the Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba.

The message from the South African Football Association (Safa) headquarters may sound harsh, but is simple expected to predict Mashaba’s future.

“Let our beloved country Mzansi [SA] go to the next World Cup. “Make sure you take Bafana Bafana to 2018 World Cup in Russia.”

On Saturday away at Ouagadougou at 8pm, the SA senior team will face Burkina Faso and a win will mean the country is on the right track, but a loss or draw will put Mashaba’s future on Foot thin ice.

Indicators are that Safa’s big wigs have been reportedly “fed up” with Mashaba for a long time and a minor slip up from him will put him at the exit door.

the field of play in order to deliver. Our country stands a good chance of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and on Saturday they will not only be playing for three points in Ouagadougou, but also to secure his future.
