VIPS relax at JG Zuma Marathon

Dignitaries at the JG Zuma Marathon on 17 April at King Edward Park (from left) president of Athletics South Africa, Aleck Skhosana, Mayor of Umgungundlovu District Municipality, Cllr Yusuf Bhamjee, Deputy Mayor of uMshwathi Local Municipality, Cllr Siphindile Zondi, KZN MEC for Education, Peggy Nkonyeni, Deputy Mayor of uMzinyathi District Municipality, Cllr Naniwe Madonsela and Mayor of Umvoti Municipality, Thami Ngubane.

Pipeline remains pipe dream TWO weeks ago the Greytown Gazette published photographs of non-operative Craigieburn pipeline showing trenches filled with weeds, hundreds of metres of pipes lying around and no signs of activity in any shape or form whatsoever. Umzinyathi District Municipality was requested by the Editor to supply information as to why the Craigieburn pipeline had ground to a halt and what this meant in terms of the assurances given to residents by Umzinyathi and the department that the pipeline would be completed and operational by the end of May. The following reply was received: “Umzinyathi District Municipality awarded various

contracts for implementation of the Greytown Water Scheme. The bulk of the scheme includes the supply of raw water from Craigieburn Dam to the Greytown Water Treatment works. “The Greytown Bulk Water scheme is still on, however, there are some operational and contractual challenges that Umzinyathi district is currently attending to with another service provider with the aim of ensuring that there is eventually a smooth flow of the project in question.” The Greytown Gazette felt this reply did not give any answers and once again requested information on the timeline for the completion

of this vital source of water, what are the operational and contractual challenges referred to by Umzinyathi and whether the millions of rands given by the Department to Umzinyathi to fast forward this project had been applied. Costs of this project have soared - from the original quote in 2008 of R290 million to the latest figure of over R500 million, which does not include the additional R6,5 million made available by the Department to Umzinyathi to fast forward the completion from September this year to (believe it or not) May 2016, Lake Merthley is 17.09% full and going into winter there is very little chance of rain. Water is life - every drop counts.
