ANC retains Umvoti, IFP takes Umzinyathi IN a 65% voter turnout the ANC retained Umvoti winning 10 Wards with the remaining four being won by the IFP. According to the proportional representation formula, based on votes for a specific political party, the ANC will have five PR councillors, the IFP seven, and the DA one PR councillor. The IFP have the most PR councillors based on the formula applied to the number of votes received for each political party.

Umvoti Municipal Council for the next five years will therefore consist of 15 ANC councillors, 11 IFP councillors and one DA councillor.

The EFF, which also contested the 14 Wards, will not be represented in council.

The three Independent candidates who stood were also not successful.

A detailed summary of the final results released by the IEC, and which has been accepted by the political parties as free and fair, is as follows: African National Congress: total votes: 20 050 - 54.22% Inkatha Freedom Party: total votes: 15 079 - 40.77% Democratic Alliance: total votes: 1 370 – 3.70% Economic Freedom Fighters: total votes: 483 - 1.31% The IEC has released details of the winning candidates in the 14 wards as follows: Ward 1. In a telephonic interview with the region­ al secretary of Inkosi Bhambata ANC branch, Mr Bheki Lambethe, he expressed thanks to all in Umvoti for having had a peaceful and hassle­free election have confirmed these by Sunday, however, according to the IEC Greytown at the time of going to press the names had not been confirmed.

These four will nominate councillors at the first official council meeting for the district municipality and according to the votes received there will be 15 IFP and 11 ANC to make up the 27 member Umzinyathi Council.

This is based on the number of votes received in Umvoti and Endumeni (ANC) and majority IFP in Msinga and Nquthu.

In a telephonic interview with the regional secretary of Inkosi Bhambata ANC branch, Mr Bheki Lambethe, he expressed thanks to all in Umvoti for having had a peaceful and hassle-free election.

He expressed his thanks to all the voters for the confidence they had shown in having the ANC lead them for the next five years, and assured all that the ANC was committed to delivering the services as per its manifesto.

Mr Lambethe expressed his appreciation to all other political parties for the free and fair elections.

The emphasis for the future would be to work together to make sure that Umvoti changes for the better.

The regional secretary announced that the ANC had decided that the mayoral candidate for Umvoti would be the current Mayor Councillor, Thami Ngubane.

Once again protestors used rocks and burning tyres to block the busy Keates Drift­ Tugela Ferry road causing many motorists to, at the last minute, find an alternate route. RTI Greytown members cleared the rocks on Saturday. According to reports the protest was related to the elections.

Women’s Charter, 62 years ago NATIONAL Women’s Day took place yesterday, Tuesday 9 August.

It is more than likely that most South Africans enjoyed the day as just another public holiday without being aware of the important history of the day.

In 1954 the Federation of South African Women adopted a charter which expressed the philosophy and aims of the newly established federation at its founding conference in Johannesburg.

It is interesting, in terms of the current situation in the country and the emphasis on gender quality since 1994 to review some of the requirements of the Charter as follows: “We, the women of South Africa, wives and mothers, working women and housewives, African, Indians, European and Coloured, hereby declare our aim of striving for the removal of all laws, regulations, conventions and customs that discriminate against us as women, and that deprive us in any way of our inherent right to the advantages, responsibilities and opportunities that society offers to any one section of the population.

“We women do not form a society separate from the men.

“There is only one society, and it is made up of both women and men.

“As women we share the problems and anxieties of our men, and join hands with them to remove social evils and obstacles to progress.”

Despite the amazing progress that has been made the following paragraph on “need for education” is perhaps the least fulfilled in the past 62 years: “We also recognise that large numbers of our womenfolk continue to be bound by traditional practices and conventions, and fail to realise that these have become obsolete and a brake on progress.

“It is our duty and privilege to enlist all women in our struggle for emancipation and to bring to them all realisation of the intimate relationship that exists between their status of inferiority as women and the inferior status to which their people are subjected by discriminatory laws and colour prejudices.”

“Many of the aims declared in the Charter have been met, but there is still much required: • Equal rights with men in relation to property, marriage and children, and for the removal of all laws and customs that deny women such equal rights.

• For the development of every child through free compulsory education for all, for the protection of mother and child through maternity homes, welfare clinics, creches and nursery schools, in countryside and towns, through proper homes for all, and through the provision of water, light, transport, sanitation, and other amenities of modern civilisation.

• To strive for permanent peace throughout the world.”

Greytown Museum Arts Fair success WELL done to the organisers of the successful Greytown Museum Arts Fair, which took place on Sunday 31st July.

Suzanne Foster Aherin and Kate Elges got together a most impressive and interesting array of stalls and the selection of art on show displayed the extensive talent in the area.

With the sun shining brightly, live music on the go, plus plenty to eat (and good coffee), the 570 visitors, plus a large number of youngsters were well entertained as they

wandered around the museum grounds.

Kate and Suzanne thanked the community for the support and the way in which all pulled together. They also thanked Umvoti Municipality for permission to use the museum, the Umvoti Community Tourism for its support, the SPCA volunteers and stallholders.

The SPCA and Greytown Museum benefited from donations and the intention is to hold the fair annually and plans are already being put into place for 2017.

DESPITE the icy wind blowing in from the snow-capped Drakensberg there was a great attendance at the Garden Club meeting last Tuesday to view and learn the fascinating facts about proteas from Juanita and

Murray Mason at Brayleigh.

The well wrapped-up audience were most impressed as Juanita outlined the start of her protea project. She and Murray undertook detailed research as well as visited proteas

farms before starting the project with just 600 plants of six varieties.

She now has 5 500 plants of 25 different species enabling an almost continuous supply of these very special flowers.

REACHING out as a school to help those around us builds selflessness into the characters of the children at New Hanover Prep School.

They’ll feel a sense of pride as they see that little efforts, like going through closets rooting out warm clothes they haven't worn in a while or books they have finished reading, add up to a big help.

Donating winter garments and reading material to our school this week caused our children to appreciate that reaching out to others in need is a way of life.

It also reminded us all to be grateful for the blessings in our lives.

Hermannsburg Happenings LAST weekend our Kindergarten and primary school teachers had the most exciting, stimulating and memorable “Proudly Primary Conference” at Cowan House Preparatory School in Hilton.

The theme of this year’s conference, “Down to Earth”, celebrated the many unique qualities and opportunities in South Africa, as well as the privilege of teaching in our beautiful country. The conference catered for the specific needs of all primary school phases and

incorporated environmental and outdoor education.

A young Hermannsburg Enviro quiz team (two Grade 8 pupils, a Grade 9 and a Grade 11 pupil) took on 14 teams (comprising mostly senior pupils) at the national final in Pietermaritzburg last Friday, finishing fifth.

Thank you Mondi and WESSA for organising the quiz each year.

No rain, but they still flower PETUNIAS are renowned for three reasons - they’ve been around forever (known since the mid-1700s at least), they’re generous bloomers and there’s a petunia to suit every season.

Bellis, on the other hand, may sound more sexy and less common, but are precisely that, a sexy common daisy species.

The petunia’s trumpetshaped blooms have a spicy scent and come in a variety of colours, including bi-coloured and double varieties. Although Bellis’s colours are limited to white, red and various shades of pink, their single-stemmed blooms vary from the more common looking daisy with a single layer of elongated petals to the multi-layered pompomlooking variety.

There’s always a petunia to suit your needs - Grandiflora have larger blooms, spread well and best planted in autumn and winter in summer rainfall areas. Multiflora have masses of smaller flowers and are suited for planting in spring and summer in summer rainfall areas, their smaller flowers being more tolerant of rainfall, the same goes for Millifloras (thousand flowers), which have small but prolific blooms.

Petunias are best in full sun, needing at least six hours of full sun daily, perfect for those hotter areas of your garden, especially along a north-facing wall.

They must have well-draining soil, particularly in a container.

Avoid replanting in the same bed as previous petunias to give the soil time to recover.

Once established, the trick with petunias is to let the soil dry out between watering. Too much water makes plants leggy with too many leaves and few flowers. They hate soggy soil.

An initial dose of fertiliser will be rewarded, as will a folia feed high in potash. If plants become too leggy just nip the plant back to encourage more branching and a neater shape. Deadhead fading blooms to encourage more flower growth and a longer blooming period.

Bellis Historically known as Bruisewort, for its healing abilities in treating minor injuries like cuts, bruises and joint pain, Bellis is not just a pretty face. Its spoonshaped leaves provide a lovely bed of green ground cover from which their bright disc-like blooms stand out singly and proudly. Bellis need full sun and well draining soil. An initial boost of compost and slow releasing fertiliser is all the pampering they’ll need. Water once a day until established and less frequently thereafter.

Osteospermum better known as the Cape or African daisy is great for pots. A wonderful indigenous plant requiring lots of sun and minimal watering. A low growing evergreen shrub with daisy-like blooms that come in a variety of colours, the hardiest of which have a deep purple or blueish centre fading to white petals.

SPORT NEWS Sixty­year reminder SIXTY years ago on 9 August, 20 000 women from across South Africa marched on the Union Buildings in protest against the dehumanising pass laws. This march is regarded as one of the defining moments in the country's history of the struggle for liberation.

The aim was to present a petition with thousands of signatures on to the then prime minister, JG Strijdom -although he was not there the women sent a public message that they would not be intimidated and silenced by unjust laws.

The freedom song “You strike a woman , you strike a rock” has become the theme representing the courage and strength of South African women.

Brand South Africa's CEO, Kingsley Makhubela said: "As we commemorate National Women's Month this month, and Women's Day on 9 August, let us remember the brave women who strengthened South Africa's fight for liberation and a society based on equality, non-sexism and non-racism. Their

strength and perseverance has been pivotal to the mainstreaming of gender issues in contemporary South Africa.

"Today our guiding framework to build an equitable country, the National Development Plan makes firm recommendations that the transformation of the economy should involve active participation and empowerment of women, and that the role of women as leaders in all sectors of society should be actively supported.

"It is time that all South Africans and all sectors of society come together to bring this vision of an equitable society to life. It is time that women are empowered to transcend the barriers imposed by their gender, race and class.

South Africa's growth and development depends on each of us and we will never achieve the fullest extent of our national potential if more than 50% of our population remains marginalised. We must all play our part," said Mr Makhubela.

Harburg Tour de Krantz IT is one of the most popular events for cyclists and runners. The Harburg aQuellé Tour de Krantz takes place on Saturday 20 August, with this year, an even larger choice in track and trail.

The mountain bike challenges range from 45km (starting 8.30am), 25km (starting 9am), the 10km, which starts at 9.30am and the youngster's starting time is 9.40am.

Runners have the choice of a 10km or five-kilometre trail - starting at 7.30am and 7.45am respectively.

The brave are encouraged to try out a com-

bination of events and test their boundaries.

Registration costs range from R50 to R150 depending on the event, and a late entry fee is charged for entries after 18 August.

There is no charge for the children's ride.

Known as "a taste of Germany" visitors can enjoy delicious food, the farmer's market, which opens at 12pm, and the enjoyable music of a German Oompah band throughout the day.

Hermannsburg Happenings ONE of our pupils, Sanele Ndwandwe, was selected for the KZN Inland U18 B team (hockey) and writes: “I was selected as one of two goalkeepers. The team was preparing to compete in the national U18 boys’ and girls’ hockey tournament from 25 June to 1 July, hosted at the Free State University.

“The team practised every Sunday from 22 May and played a practice match against KZN Coastals, losing 1-5, where I played in the second half and conceded only one goal. Even though we lost, I was prepared for the tournament.

“The team had an overnight camp, training for the entire afternoon of 24 June at Michaelhouse before leaving early the next day for the eight-hour bus trip to Bloemfontein.

“We stayed at St Andrew’s High School and, because it was very cold in the mornings, we took 15-minute jogs before breakfast at 7 o’clock for the next six days. I enjoyed those runs, but was still cold afterwards.

“This was the first tournament to include both girls and boys, so it was pretty packed. The boys’ teams included 12 teams in Section A and 12 teams in Section B with Inland B in the A Section, consisting of Boland A, Eastern Gauteng, KZN Coastals, KZN Inland A & B, Northern Gauteng A, Western Province B, Amathole, Eastern Province A, South-western Districts, Southern Gauteng A and Western Province.

“I played in five of the eight matches, twice as goal-keeper and as striker for the rest. In my first match for the team I played as goalkeeper and we won 5-0 against Eastern Gauteng, giving me a clean sheet - the only goalkeeper in my team to achieve this.

“Our oppositions were tough opponents, so we came out with two wins, three draws and three losses. Overall, KZN Inland B came fifth in Section A and KZN Inland A took the trophy in first position.”
