South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

Clearly South Africans will continue to make great strides despite the negative news that some­ times comes to the fore.

ING of amaHlubi nation, Langalibalele II, called on amaHlubi nation to restore tradition and customs at a Heritage Day celebration of amaHlubi in Kokstad on Saturday.

At the celebration people dressed in traditional attire and young girls dressed in traditional dance outfits.

Organisor Benny Khobo, a Kokstad Hlubi said the event was held to bring all nations in Kokstad together.

“In Kokstad there are Griquas, amaXhosa, amaZulu, Sotho, amaHlubi and other nations

and we will celebrate Heritage Day together. Our children must know where we come from.”

Greater Kokstad Municipal deputy mayor Karen Walker, GKM councillors and representatives from other nations attended. King Langalibalele II said on 17 September, 1974 he was given the task of looking after the nation and to return its dignity.

“I am happy to see the nation growing in the country. AmaHlubi must be proud of their heritage and must bring back their traditions and customs. Parents must educate their children about amaHlubi culture so that our heritage doesn’t disappear.

The claim of amaHlubi kingship to be recognised in the country is still unresolved by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The nation lost its kingship after Langalibalele I was detained on Robben Island during apartheid many years ago.

“I am happy to celebrate Heritage Day and this celebration shows that our nation is still alive. I want to ask God and our forefathers like oBhungane, oMthimkhulu, oLangalibalele, oSiyephu and Tatazela to protect the nation,” said Langalibalele II.

N2 accident claims one life

Stock theft increase concerns

SIPHELELE NKETO Siphelele@media24.com AN accident between Kokstad and Port Shepstone claimed the life of one person with others being taken to hospital with injuries on Monday.

The accident happened on the N2 next to Pink Church few kilometres outside Kokstad at about 7am.

A witness told Fever that four vehicles were involved in the accident.

“A vehicle from Fidelity Company was also involved in the accident. After the accident happened I saw peoplem, including security guards, scattered next to the road and police and ambulances arrived quickly to rescue people.”

Another witness blames speed and wrong overtaking as the cause of the accident.

The cause of the accident is under SAPS investigation.

THE SAPS are concerned about the recent increase in stock theft in Matatiele.

Spokesperson captain Raphael Motloung advised people to report any suspicious vehicles they see transporting stock in their area.

He said stock thieves mostly use Mount Fletcher routes leading to Lesotho, Kokstad, Swartberg and Pondoland to transport stolen cattle, sheep and goats.

“When people see suspicious vehicles carrying stock they must report it to the nearest police station.”

A 46-year-old man appeared in court for allegedly stealing three cattle from Lesotho and selling them in Matatiele last week.

The man was also charged with stealing 22 goats in Mount Fletcher. - Supplied.

SAPS is looking for missing person IBISI SAPS is asking the public to help in their search for a missing person, Mbongeni Joseph Mtolo (36), of Ngudwini area at Umzimkhulu.

Mtolo was last seen on the 19 August at about 7.30pm. He was wearing a black and cream tracksuit, brown polo-neck shirt and

black shoes. Anyone with information of his whereabouts is asked to contact Constable V.C. Gumede of Ibisi police station on 039 259 6000/6 or 079 833 1067. SAPS crime stop number that can also be contacted is 08600 10111.

Robber receives 18 years A 22-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances by Kokstad Regional Court recently.

In November, a 60-year-old man, the complainant, was sleeping alone at home when

he heard someone in the house. The suspect was allegedly struck the complainant with a hammer and fled with R1000.

The complainant was taken to hospital with injuries.

After police investigations

the suspect was arrested.

During the trial a doctor, who examined complainant in hospital, told the court that the complainant would have died if he had not received medical attention immediately.

HE EG and Usher Memorial Hospital received a visit from members of National Council of Provinces in the provincial legislature and Parliament last Thursday.

Senior hospital officials outlined achievements and challenges the hospital is facing to the visiting guests.

The nursing manager, Mduduzi Ndlovu, said the hospital has received many awards this year despite a short-

age of accommodation for nurses.

“Staff accommodation is a challenge because 64 beds at the nurses home were built many years ago, staff need additional accommodation.

“Maternity wards need to be extended because sometimes patients have to share beds.”

A hospital board member Mr Momodi said the hospital is faced with many problems including the shortage of staff and doctors.

“Patients have to wait many hours for medication and nurses have far too much work because of the staff short-

age.

“The shortage of nurse accommodation affects the hospital because they complain about all the travelling they have to do to get to work.”

The influx of patients from the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, Umzimhkulu and Matatiele was also mentioned as another challenge and those who come to Kokstad for business, work, school and shopping are also another challenge, thus increasing the amount of people who use the hospital.

cause of challenges instead they should make an effort to assist everyone.

Senior hospital officials denied there was a shortage of food when a member of the NCOP asked about the shortage of sugar.

A member of the NCOP asked about the unavailability of laundry at the hospital and senior officials acknowledged that laundry is done in Pietermaritzburg for the entire hospital.

Macala took over after station commander Colonel Virginia Xhelithole left after being promoted.

Macala has 31 years’ experience in the police service and has worked in Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Kokstad.

A HEALTHY lifestyle was promoted during a fun walk and sports games for social development staff in Matatiele recently.

The Department of Social Development in Alfred Nzo Region organised the event to promote social cohesion among employees.

From steam trains, Umgano Eco Adventure trips to intercultural food, hiking trails, crafts, hotels, B&Bs and various cultural groups, there is so much that captures the imagination.

The relationship between Harry Gwala Development Agency, Harry Gwala District Municipality and Msuduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association has created a lot of opportunities to previously disadvantaged people as most have now become tourist guides.

These relationships resulted in an event that started on Friday where mayors, tourist guides and municipal officials flocked to Nelson Mandela Capture site where former president Nelson was arrested in 1962 and imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Island.

“In only July this year, we had 3 700 tourist from Pietermaritzburg, Durban, abroad and all over South Africa taking a luxury steam train trip,” said Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Local Economic Development Manager, Dudley Smith.

Harry Gwala District Municipality Deputy Mayor, Ntuseng Duma described the district as an area of love and tourism.

“We have beautiful mountains, streams and species you will never find in other areas,” said Duma.

She said they want people to take tourism seriously and promote it as

career choice.

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality Mayor Patricia Mncwabe said tourism is the bread and butter of Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality and KwaZulu-Natal where they traditionally welcome a steady stream of travellers from across the country, including international tourists.

“While we will continue to enjoy a strong reputation among holidaymakers, I am confident our strength in tourism will also grow. We are constantly looking for ways to ensure the destination becomes competitive year

round and continue to represent a peaceful and majestic sight of the country.

“To deliver on the promise of tourism, we have to create the conditions that render the tourism experience and the treasures of our country accessible and affordable to a much greater share of our population.

After presentations, engagements and amendments it was clear to everyone that this rural based and fast-growing municipality was destined for bigger things.

HEN you have a choice between two cars from the same manufacturer and each one is as accomplished as the other, how do you go about choosing between derivatives?

That’s what many potential owners will be faced with when visiting a Peugeot dealership, looking to invest in the 308 hatchback range.

The two models in question - the PureTech and GT - are fighting at different ends of the spectrum but both have their unique selling points in the fiercely-contested local hatchback market.

Fluid lines and clean angles makes the 308 one of the more attractive hatchbacks SA. Both cars have the same confident stance and tinted rear windows add poise to the overall design.

The wheels fill the arches nicely and the rear rounds off an overall attractive package.

The interior is clean, uncluttered, and devoid of unnecessary dials and switches.

Accessing both vehicles’ settings is completed by using the large touchscreen found atop the dashboard. Everything from light, temperature and connecting your phone via Bluetooth is done via the touchscreen. Each of the six accessible categories has a second page of menus with large images and letters. Switching between menus is a breeze.

The materials used throughout the cabin feel durable and premium. It does not give the impression of cheapness or that Peugeot skimped on quality.

The front lacks heatable seats, though there is a massage function.

The 308 range, and especially these two models, are filled to the brim with standard equipment.

Features such as front-rear parking sensors and auto wipers (with rain sensors) are standard, as well as an electric handbrake.

The GT has keyless entry/start and a Driver Sport Pack and the PureTech only has Sport mode.

Both cars feature Eco mode with stop-start technology.

Driving traits of the…

PureTech The PureTech has a very different character to the GT. It’s slower, obviously, and demands its driver to take on a more relaxed driving style. Its three-cylinder engine was designed to be as frugal as

GT sibling rivalry possible and a sensitive foot will return decent fuel consumption. The PureTech does have a big downside; drive it too hard and fuel consumption rises quite steeply; with Sport mode raising fuel consumption even further.

Peugeot says the PureTech will return 5.2 litres/100km, but it’ll take some real effort to achieve that in the real world.

Driving this specific model squashes any need or desire to drive fast because the car’s nature requires a calm demeanor behind the wheel.

The PureTech’s drive feels solid and sturdy and the steering is responsive enough to generate a feeling of confidence in the car’s abilities.

The six-speed auto does well to channel the power to the front wheels and is much happier changing cogs on its own rather than obeying driver input.

GT The GT has two driving modes: Normal and Sport. In Normal the car is smooth as silk. It sneaks around like a cat without anyone taking note of it. The engine performs in a gutsy manner, though calling on available power is a gradual process. Power delivery is good enough for a quick sprint past slower traffic, yet the car can crawl along without a care in the world.

Activating Sport mode sees dials switch from white to red and the exhaust becomes deep and angry. In Sport mode, the GT becomes a different car: one that’s eager to deliver driver enjoyment. Does it succeed? Well, steering becomes taut and the suspension stiffens up. The aforementioned Driver Sport Pack allows for exhaust blips to be more pronounced and gear-changes from the six-speed manual ‘box are slightly more intense.

Changing gears during an enthusiastic driving, sees the clutch pedal retract into its normal position, but not without a little jerk. It does not hinder performance, but the feeling under your left foot is not something you’ll get used to.

The PureTech and GT have similar spec and are only separated by engine and drive characteristics.

With a price difference of R20 000 between the two cars, choosing one over the other will come down to preference.

According to information released by Stats SA on Tuesday, household final consumption expenditure increased by one percent in the second quarter. The main sources of the increase were miscellaneous goods and services and health services.

Consumers are finding it difficult to put food on the table - literally - while some are cutting back on trips to the salon, eating at restaurants and other spoils, others have found a way to live and eat comfortably.

Samantha Nadel, a single South-

port resident, says she spends roughly R500 a month on food.

So how does she do it - she bargainhunts.

“I am the queen of bargain hunting.

I go to stores and look for their readymade meals, which have been marked down. They can be put into the freezer and then reheated or put into the oven when I’m ready to eat it,” she said.

Nadel added these items have not expired and she buys them for half the original price.

“I also scout certain shops when I am in certain areas and see what items they have on sale.”

Denise Botha, a single Ramsgate mother of two, says although times are tough, she manages to spoil her chil-

dren and all she has done is shuffle her calendar.

“We used to eat out on a Friday or Saturday. Now we eat out on whichever day a restaurant is running a special where children eat free.

“It’s usually a Sunday or a Wednesday, but at least I still get to spoil my children without it making a huge dent in my pocket.”

With regards to grocery shopping, Botha advises mothers not to feel bad when buying “no-name” products “Children are very picky and they want a certain brand, but you have to be realistic. If a cheaper brand tastes just as good and costs less, it’s only logical to purchase that.”

OLLYWOODBETS are the new title sponsors of the Dolphins for the 2016/17 season.

Having been an associate sponsor last season, the betting agency have taken up the mantle after the Willowton Group (Sunfoil) decided to focus their sponsorship on Test and national cricket after five years with the Dolphins.

Announcing the deal at Kingsmead recently, KZNCU president Faeez Jaffer said this was an exciting period for the franchise and he hoped the partnership would grow and continue for many seasons.

“We have been in discussions with Hollywoodbets and obviously they are cautious as this is a huge step and commitment for them,” he said.

“Bearing that in mind, the deal is currently only for the upcoming season and we will take matters forward from there season by season. They will bring the same value as our previous sponsors.”

It may seem ironic that a betting company is sponsoring a cricket franchise given the controversy that surrounds the game when it comes to gambling and fixing, but Hollywoodbets media and communications executive Devin Heffer dispelled any rumours or lame comments.

“This is a huge announcement from our side and as a local company, our roots run deep in KZN sport,” he said. “We had a taste of what being involved with the Dolphins is about last season and we wanted more, taking our involvement to a new level.

“We jumped at the opportunity to become title sponsors and are the first betting brand in South Africa to be a title sponsor of a sporting franchise.

“Let me say that as a company, we are more

than committed to upholding the standards, spirit and ethos of the game and have the Dolphins brand and cricket in the province as our number one priority.”

Continuing to sponsor club cricket and community-based soccer teams, Heffer said Hollywoodbets wanted to work on its mandate of bringing people to cricket, introducing people to the game and creating a festive atmosphere at games home and away.

“Our ‘purple army’ has become a familiar sight at Dolphin matches and with branches around the country, we have staff cheering on our boys when they play away from Durban, creating a home from home atmosphere for them,” he said. “Hence we created the #DolFanArmy and we hope to expand the ranks this season.”

Dolphins coach Grant Morgan was confident the team would perform on the field and make the sponsors proud.

“With Hollywoodbets creating a vibe at our games, we have no excuses but to perform and we will pick up that mantle of getting people to the cricket as well,” he said.

“Don’t be surprised to see Dolphins players on street corners a few days ahead of a game handing out pamphlets, telling people to get to the ground.”

Acting Dolphins CEO Rajesh Behari said it was an obvious option to approach Hollywoodbets once Willowton had pulled out and it was confirmed that the Dolphins were in the market for an associate sponsor.

It was also confirmed that with the new title sponsors on board, the Dolphins would play all their away One Day Cup and CSA T20 matches in purple kit.

The season starts for the Dolphins with a fourday clash against the Warriors at Buffalo Park, East London, from 5 to 8 October.

FTER a long 800km ride from Alberton to Southbroom Golf Course, 13 cyclists were welcomed home by families and friends - one of the cyclist did not take part as he was felt sick before the start of the ride.

The ride was in aid of Pro Deo Care Group, an organisation that takes care of the sick and those with special needs.

Pro Deo member Doreen Campbell said they are always grateful for cyclists who participate on this fundraising awareness ride.

This year, more than R300 000 was raised and will go towards a number of projects the organisation is involved in.

“The money this year will be used for expanding our cleaning services, we will invest in our Hospice project, assist young people with disabilities and some of it will go towards our school feeding programme,” said

Family, friends and cyclists then went to lunch at the golf course.

ST Monica School pupils participated in Sisonke Primary School athletics meeting recently and achieved good results.

St Monica School is pleased with the performance of pupils.

Zimi Mnukwa participated on the U10 80m run, Nomasonto Doncabe participated on the U12 shot put and Zizipho Letuka participated on U13 long jump.
