zelmere and Midmar may force water suppliers to cut off flow every day from 10pm until early in the morning, as it has happened in some areas already,” said Hlophe, who added that the drought is having a devastating effect on the national economy.

The lack of rainfall due to the highpressure El Niño weather front has led to crops across the country; including sugarcane and maize to be seriously affected, with annual yields lower by an average of 30% in most areas.

In light of these factors, Govendsamy said drastic measures need to be taken by all of us to better protect the dwindling water resources we have at our disposal.

TONGAAT Crime Prevention members allegedly received information that three armed men were inside a house in Gwalas Farm on Sunday.

Warrant Officer Manisha MaharajMarie from Tongaat SAPS said the swift response of the Crime Prevention officers led to the arrest of the three men.

“Upon entering and searching the property, officers found all three suspects in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” said Maharaj-Marie.

According to police, one of the firearms recovered in the arrests was a positive match to a missing firearm in a case of theft in the Melmoth area earlier this year in January.

The three men are all from the Waterloo area in Verulam.

“This is excellent work by the community, for being observant and assisting police in making their community crime free by getting rid of firearms,” said Maharaj-Marie.

“The officers involved in the arrests are Warrant Officer Nadass, Sergeant Govender, Constable Mudly, Constable Khati and Constable Mbatha. Outstanding work by all for promptly acting on the information they received – keep up the excellent work.”

School hosts diabetes WEEKLY awareness week 28 April 2016

ERULAM Secondary School’s youth empowerment society devoted all of last week to diabetes awareness as they highlighted issues surrounding the symptoms of the condition and preventative measures; especially concerning type-two diabetes.

A comprehensive programme culminated in an informative workshop presented by Grade 10 pupil, Tyler Moodley, members of staff and fellow pupils.

He discussed how type-two diabetes is becoming more common among teenagers as diet and lifestyle is changing, and that every 10 seconds, two people develop diabetes around the world.

He added that every eight seconds, one person dies as a consequence of diabetes related causes, which evoked alarm in the participating pupils and teachers.

Moodley emphasised that teenagers are becoming diabetic because of their increased consumption

of junk-food and decreased physical activity. As there is no cure for type-two diabetes, lifestyle changes must be made.

Following Moodley’s presentation, Grade 11 pupil Njabulo Mbatha shared his journey to a healthier lifestyle with his peers after he was diagnosed with a compromised heart rate due to obesity.

He also revealed that his 13-year-old cousin was diagnosed with diabetes and that a 17-yearold friend of his has already had a stroke.

Co-ordinator of the awareness week and teacher at the school, Mr S. Chetty concluded the events by stating that damage to the eyes, kidneys and feet are irreversible and as a result, everyone needs to make appropriate changes as there is no cure for type-one and type-two diabetes.

ULLYING is something that has always and will always be around; lurking in the shadows of every school across the globe.

There are ways, however, to identify and address bullying when and where it presents itself in order to better safeguard your child from its destructive effects.

Warrant Officer Manisha MaharajMarie, policewoman at Tongaat SAPS and guidance counsellor at their onsite Trauma Centre, said the issue of bullying is very real, and one that continues to affect children in schools throughout the area.

“Bullying is everywhere. It is a very real issue with far reaching consequences and it exists in primary schools right through to secondary level,” said Maharaj-Marie, who added that many parents come to the police for advice when their children are being bullied.

“In some schools I have visited, there are cases of Grade 8 pupils bullying children as young as Grade 1 for

their tuck shop money. The Grade 1 child is traumatised as a result of this behaviour and is now nervous to go to school,” she added.

Maharaj-Marie quoted another example which involved some Grade 8 girls bullying a Grade 1 girl so badly that her parents had her removed from the school.

Bullying can have a lasting effect on a child’s self esteem and confidence, especially during the formative part of their lives when a child begins to develop their own ideas of who they are.

According to Liz Watson of UKbased charity ‘BeatBullying’, difference is the number one cause of bullying anywhere in the world.

“Difference is the number one reason for why people bully. During childhood, young people are beginning to discover who they are, and appearance plays a large role in that,” said Watson.

So, what can parents and teachers do to prevent bullying? The signs of bullying are not often easy to identify; especially when your child is the bully.

For a child who is being bullied,

Reaction Unit SA crime reporter House break­in: Verulam – Members of Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) re­ ceived reports of a house break­in on 19 April at approxi­ mately 9.20am.

They were dispatched to a house on Tafiq Avenue in Riyad, Verulam.

Upon arrival officers found that the garage had been broken into. A two­plate gas stove and a tool box were stolen by suspects who had fled in an unknown direction.

Motor vehicle collision: Verulam – Members of Rusa were dispatched to Buffelsdraai Road on 20 April at approximately 8.15pm after receiv­ ing reports of a motor vehicle collision.

Upon arrival they found a silver Ford Fiesta had veered off the road and overturned.

The two occupants of the vehicle sustained moder­ ate injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to hospital.

Theft of motor vehicle: Tongaat ­ Be on the lookout for a 1991 model, white Isuzu bak­ kie with registration NJ 69788.

The vehicle was stolen from the parking lot of a flat in Buffelsdale, Tongaat.

Common robbery: Verulam – A resident requested help from Rusa on 22 April at approximately 9am after she had been robbed of her cellphone on Ireland Street in Verulam.

Officers were dispatched to the call and upon arrival searched the area however no arrests were made.

Hijacking: Verulam – On Friday 22 April members of Rusa were dis­ patched to Pumpkin Road in Waterloo, Verulam, after receiving reports of a hijacking at approximately 9.30pm.

Upon arrival officers were informed that two sus­ pects who were dropped off by the driver of a black Hyundai Getz, hijacked the victim for his Hyundai Elan­ tra with registration NJ 72984 before fleeing the scene in an unknown direction.

Frequent complaining of headaches, stomach aches, nausea or faking illness is also a sign your child does not want to go to school and may be a victim of bullying.

Children who may be bullies, on the other hand, are harder to identify, but some signs parents can look out for include a deep worry in the child about their popularity, as well as frequent visits to the principal’s office or detention. If your child has extra money or new belongings, these may also be signs they are bullying someone else.

Warrant Officer said the police have a very good relationship with all principals in the area and they are working together to address the issue of bullying in local schools.

“It is the social responsibility of the police to address the concerns of the

community, and parents often come for advice if their child is being bullied.

We also offer talks in schools where we

discuss the negative effects of bullying for those affected,” said Maharaj-Marie.

President Jacob Zuma recently apologised for the “frustration and confusion” caused by the upgrades at his Nkandla home. In response to the Constitutional Court judgment on the powers of public protector, Zuma said with the benefit of hindsight, there were many matters that could have been handled differently.

With regard to the most damning aspect of the judgment, Zuma said he “never knowingly or deliberately set out to violate the Constitution”.

This was not an apology for the wastage of money on the upgrades, and the subsequent farcical processes to dodge accountability for the project, or for the damage the Nkandla saga caused to our institutions, including Parliament.

The president knew that he could

walk away from the saga by offering a superficial apology.

The speaker of Parliament, Baleka Mbete, who now appears to have designs on the presidency herself, could not even be bothered to apologise for her part in the Nkandla matter.

The National Assembly was also found to have acted inconsistently with the Constitution and unlawfully.

But Mbete said she did not know what she had to apologise for.

Sorry does seem to be the hardest word.

In January, estate agent Penny Sparrow caused a public storm by describing black beachgoers as monkeys in a Facebook post.

Seek out a reputable investment adviser or financial planner to help assess your investment needs, particularly when it comes to large sums of money.

Researching and keeping track of one’s investment is crucial, even if you invest at the advice of a top financial planner.

The internet has much information on how to start your invest journey.

You may, as many other people have, find that it becomes a fun and rewarding part of your life.

Clearly, Sparrow did not understand the depth of her insult or her prejudice. She also did not know how to offer a sincere apology.

What Mother’s Day means A

S Mother’s Day approaches once again, we thought it would be fitting to give the stage to those who really know what it means to be a mother.

You may simply take a little inspiration from their stories, get a new gift idea or just remember to call your mom on the day, but sometimes there is nothing better than listening to a mom.

Tania has been a daughter, a pet owner, a sister, a friend, a wife and a mother. She has three kids under three, a very successful blog and most importantly, a sense of humour.

“This year will be my third Mother’s Day and we made three of them in this space of time (okay, two of them did arrive at the same time).

Last year our twins were a mere two months old and as much as I intellectually try to ignore the whole thing, it was great to get: 1. a cup of tea I didn’t make 2. a gift 3. 15 minutes to myself This year all I want is to take my family somewhere quiet for Mother’s Day and not share them with anyone.

Somewhere by the sea where they can play in the never-ending sandpit and run to their hearts’ content. Where the sound of the sea is their lullaby and I can smell it in their hair when I hold them.

But most importantly, I want the little buggers to pass out at night and give me the best Mother’s Day gift of all: an

uninterrupted night’s sleep.”

Belinda is mom to seven year-old Rhiannon, a dedicated blogger, oh and she totally forgot to get married.

“Being a single mother has many challenges and one of these that I find most depressing is that there is no partner to egg your offspring on to remember Mother’s Day. So generally I get a badly drawn heart and maybe a chocolate and that’s it. Not that I am complaining mind you. Mother’s Day is every day -it’s in the little details.

The details like laughing with my daughter, she has an amazing sense of humour.

Or letting decorating my daughter’s bedroom become my obsession. I think it stems from a thwarted desire to have a lovely princess bedroom when I was little.

Her room is gorgeous and a never ending project. Although I must admit, the extreme ‘pinkness’ is becoming a tad overwhelming.

Hearing her say “I love you” when she is half asleep on her pillow at night.

No matter how tired she is, she still never fails to say it. Even after the hardest most revolting day at work that makes it all worthwhile.

So for now, I will look forward with great anticipation to my badly drawn card and chocolate gift for Mother’s Day. Who knows, this year she may just surprise me.”

About a month after Malakai was born I remember burping him after a feed and he looked up at me and held my gaze with his blue-grey eyes. This Mother’s Day, as a family we will be spending a divine week in my favourite part of the world - Clarens in the Free State. Foodie ideas for Mother's Day

F you’re totally over cooking, there’s oodles of places to take your mom on Mother’s Day, just take a look at them all...

So you’re thinking you’ll go the flowers and choccies route on the way to see mom on Mother’s Day. Am I close?

Not that flowers and chocs are a bad thing,, but Mother’s Day is about sharing time together and that is the most precious gift of all... and eating... a lot.

I’d love to share some foodie ideas that I’ve come up with for sharing a special day with your mom and family.

And hey, you can do this anytime, not just on cheesy, commercially forced gift-guilting days.

1. Surprise! - There’s nothing better than family and friends arriving with smiles and laughter and a surprise slap-up breakfast of all my favourite goodies. (This has not happened yet, but I am forever hopeful *crossing fingers and toes*) I’m thinking great coffee and some buttery croissant French toast.

Then a gorgeous plate of Eggs Benedict and

silky Hollandaise, it’s really simple to make - try my ‘Cheat’s Hollandaise’, it’s fool-proof and delicious.

2. Homemade treats - How cool would it be to open up a box filled with dark chocolate truffles that your son or daughter has made? I would just platz. They’re quick and fun to make (think hands covered in chocolate mmm) and you can jazz them up with things like nuts and booze to suit your mum’s taste.

Pretty wrapping: Either wrap them in a pretty paper parcel tied with ribbon (lay the balls in the middles of a large square of paper and just pull up the 4 corners and tie), or place them in a box in baby cupcake cups with rose petals - simply gawjus.

3. Homemade pamper session - Run your mum a hot bath and pop in some lavender, honey, olive oil and lemon rind (all not hard to find at home). This is a calming bath with a soothing scent and the olive oil leaves your skin feeling soft and beautiful.

Make her some revitalising ginger tea (a glass of cold champers would be my choice) and send

FTER the disappointment of missing out on the London Olympic Games four years ago, the elation of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro has outweighed the disappointment for Elite Athlete Development Programme swimming star Myles Brown, who will represent South Africa at the world showpiece in August.

With one chance to qualify at the recent South African Swimming Championships, Brown knew he had the ability to be on the South African team, however, getting through the qualification process was the biggest challenge in his 400m freestyle bid.

dream comes true “It’s a massive relief that I have finally qualified,” said the former Kearsney College pupil.

“It is up there with one of the biggest moments of my career.

“I just missed out on the London Games so it’s an awesome feeling knowing that I am going to be going to the Olympic Games this year.”

Despite the fact that qualification is in the bag, Brown and the rest of the South African swimming team have got a number of events and pre-Olympic camps to attend and so he realises there is no time to rest on his laurels.

“The year started with trying to get into the

best shape possible for the qualifiers, but now the real hard work starts for me and the rest of the team.

“I have to start stepping it up now and get prepared to race overseas in the build-up to Rio as we leave South Africa on 19 May for a long period of preparation, starting with a two-week stay in Doha followed by the Mare Nostrum Series,” said Brown.

His preparations for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games finish in the host nation following more competitive swimming in the western hemisphere.

“We will be swimming in a few galas in Fort Lauderdale in the United States before we jet off for Brazil where we will be preparing just outside Rio.

“This will probably be the most important preparation for us as we will be acclimatising as well as getting over any jetlag that we might have right before the event.

“There is still a long way to go but I am just really excited for the opportunity to represent my country at the biggest sporting event in the world!”

Brown mentioned excitedly.
