A number of reasons to celebrate MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

South Africans also took time through out the year to remember Nelson Mandela and do their bit to fulfill his legacy.

It’s been a year since his death and many ques­ tioned the stability and patriotism of South Afri­ cans. The good news is, it seems as if communities are now more united than ever. Many believe his spirit still lives on calling it a sprinkling of ‘Madiba magic’.

HE Verulam Child and Family Welfare Society hosted a one-day Career Guidance Workshop earlier this month.

Forty Grade 12 pupils and post matric pupils participated in this programme.

Guest speakers included officials from the Department of Labour and Innovatus FET College. Various career options were discussed as well as financial aid. All participants were provided with certificates of attendance.

Who is funding politicians?

TWENTY-TWO years into democracy, political party funding still remains a closely guarded secret.

Besides the funds disbursed from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Parliament’s disbursement to parties represented in the national legislature, very little is known about the private donors, companies and individuals who sponsor various political parties.

The secrecy around the parties’ funding became more evident recently through an application by My Vote Counts through the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) for political parties to disclose their private donors.

My Vote Counts describes itself as a “campaign formed by citizens and members of existing civil society organisations concerned with democracy and social justice”. It says on its website that the campaign is not affiliated to or aligned with any political party and that membership or affiliation is open to all South Africans of voting age “who share our objectives”.

Of the 13 political parties represented in Parliament that the NGO had asked to disclose their funders, only four had responded.

The four responses did not come from the political parties themselves, but from their lawyers who punched holes in the NGO’s application, saying there was no legislation that forces political parties to publish this information.

Political analyst Xolani Dube, founder of the Xubera Institute for Research and Development, said political parties disclosing their private donors would compromise their chances of getting government tenders. “In some instances, donors function as agents of moneylaundering. Disclosing who they are would be exposing them to financial trouble. Some individuals in these political parties benefit in these deals.”

He said the problem with other funders is that the parties did not want the public to know who they were affiliated to because some of them might be questionable. “The problem is the nature of the membership of political parties. It is dominated by pensioners who cannot raise their own funds so political parties have to go out and look out for donors,” he said.

Dube said there are a few conglomerates and individuals who sponsor multiple political parties. “There are people like your [Nicky] Oppenheimer [former chairman of De Beers diamond mining company] who would sponsor all political parties according to their proportional representation. The Guptas are also funding both the ANC and DA. They have also have had meetings with IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi.”

Dube said he expected the 22-year-old blackout to continue.

My Vote Counts co-ordinator Janine Ogle expressed “outrage” that, on the eve of the 2016 Local Government Elections, political parties refuse to publish information about the sources of their private donations. “That there is no legislation that forces political parties to publish this information is not a valid response. Political parties currently canvassing for votes should be willing to disclose this information. It is an insult to the electorate and the South African public for political parties to say this information is not necessary for deciding who to vote for on election day.

“The electorate needs to make an informed decision who to vote for, and who a political party accepts private donations from is part of the information necessary in making that decision.”

NDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi arrived in South Africa last week as part of his two-day visit.

Msunduzi municipal Mayor Chris Ndlela welcomed Modi on Saturday morning at the Pietermaritzburg train station after Modi travelled from Durban to Pietermaritzburg by steam train.

Hosted by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu and various provincial executives, the train ride was representative of Mahatma Gandhi’s trip to Pretoria in 1893 when he was told to move to third class from the first class of the train.

Gandhi, with a first-class ticket in hand, refused and was kicked off the train at the Pietermaritzburg station.

A Gandhi statue was unveiled in 1993 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in Pietermaritzburg. When Modi arrived, he laid a wreath at the monument, thereafter he made his way to Durban.

In Durban Modi said India and South Africa needs to improve their ties.

Modi, addressing dignitaries at Durban’s city hall, said improved trade and investment would remain a key component of relations.

had also agreed to work on defence matters.

“Let’s take advantage of the opportunities of our partnership,” said Modi.

“The first Indians arrived here on November 16, 1860. They were 342 indentured labourers.

“Today, the city of Durban has the largest gathering of Indians outside India.”

Modi paid tribute to Indians living in South Africa and what they had achieved since settling in the province 156 years ago.

He said he was mindful that over the years Indians living here had endured apartheid and colonialism.

Even though they are now South African, they had preserved and maintained their culture and values.

“Today, they are proud citizens of this great country, having made great strides in education, the judiciary and medicine. Many are leading entrepreneurs.”

On his way to Durban, Modi also visited the Gandhi settlement in Inanda. Ela Gandi, Gandhi’s granddaughter, met him at the site with other local religious and community leaders.

North Coast collisions ONE person was seriously injured in a crash on the R102 near Compensation on the North Coast on Sunday.

According to Netcare 911’s Chris Botha paramedics arrived at the scene and found that two vehicles collided.

“After the injured were examined it was found that one person sustained serious injuries while two others escaped with minor injuries.

“Medics stabilised the injured at the scene before transporting them to a local hospital for the care that they required,” said Botha.

The accident is being investigated.

In a separate incident on Saturday morning Netcare 911 paramedics were called after a vehicle had overturned on the M4 between the Tongaat mouth and Ballito.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the security officers from Zimbali heard a hooter continuously going off and went to investigate,” said Botha.

When they arrived paramedics found that a vehicle had left the roadway and rolled into the sugar cane fields below the road level.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found a female aged 35 to have sustained moderate injuries.

The inaugural event is two-fold as it will be held in honour of women and to launch the annual Charity Fair.

The fair will be held from Wednesday, 31 August to 4 September 2016.

THE Tongaat Diwali Celebration Committee is spreading cheer once again and aims to continue their 400 food hamper drive after the success of last year’s campaign.

The organisation’s main objectives are to provide community service – irrespective of race, religion and colour, language or political affiliation.

Each hamper will contain 2kg rice, 2.5kg white sugar, 2.5kg cake flour, 2 litre cooking oil – these are the main items that a family needs. The total cost per hamper is R120. The aim is to distribute 400 hampers which costs R48 000.

For this vision to materialise, the organisation is appealing for assistance. Chairperson Prem Misthry said: “Over the years we have made every effort to collect funds to enable us to provide for those in need.

With the passing of the years, this becomes more difficult.

The present state of the economy and retrenchments are some of the reasons for this.

“It would be appreciated if the public could sponsor R1200 as this will being joy to 10 needy families during Diwali.”

The hampers will be packed and delivered to the clubs from Golden Sun Supermarket on 26 October at 9am.

Taxi crashes into tree: Verulam Reaction Unit SA officers responded to a taxi collision at approximately 6.45am on Saturday 9 July in Redcliffe near the Verulam Quarry.

Upon arrival officers found the taxi that had knocked down a light pole before crashing into a tree.

The driver, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, was not injured in the accident.

It is alleged that the driver of the taxi avoided a truck which veered into his lane resulting in the accident.

Suspects arrested for burning councillor’s property EVEN suspects were arrested on Monday, 11 July, at Shaka’s Head, Umhlali area for allegedly being involved in the burning of the ward councillor’s house and vehicle earlier this year.

This is according to KZN SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane who said the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Monday following an intelligencedriven operation by the Phoenix Tactical Response Team and detectives from Mandeni SAPS. “The operation was conducted after detectives were investigating a public violence and malicious damage to property that was reported at Shaka’s Head. They appeared in the Umhlali Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 12 July, for public violence, arson and malicious damage to property,” he said.

According to reports, on Tuesday morning Shaka’s Head residents took to the streets protesting, closing off the N2 and other roads demanding the suspects be released from police custody.

IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst said the N2 was open to traffic shortly afterwards, but the P445, a link road between Ballito and Compensation, was still partially barricaded with a heavy police presence at the scene.

Zwane said the morning’s protests came after several people were arrested for the incident that occurred in February.

Man injured after fall: Tongaat A man was injured after he fell approximately four metres from scaffolding at a construction site on Gopalall Hurbans Road in Tongaat.

At approximately 1pm on Saturday 9 July members of Reaction Unit South Africa were dispatched to the construction site after receiving requests for medical assistance for the injured man.

Upon arrival the construction worker was treated for moderate injuries before being transported to a local hospital.

It is alleged that while setting up a steel structure the man slipped from the scaffold and fell to the ground.

Housebreaking suspect apprehended: Verulam A suspect that was attempting to break into a business premises on Mission Road in Verulam was apprehended by members of Reaction Unit South Africa recently.

Officers were dispatched to the property after receiving information that the suspect had jumped over the perimeter wall.

Upon arrival officers found the suspect attempting to gain entry into the back of the building.

Necessary force had to be used to restrain the suspect after he resisted arrest.

The suspect is a habitual criminal and has been arrested by officers on several occasions for house breaking and theft.

Theft of motor vehicle: Tongaat – Be on the lookout for a white Opel Corsa bakkie with registration NJ 64975.

The vehicle was stolen from the Tongaat river mouth on Saturday the 09th of July 2016. The bakkie was fitted with a white canopy.

THE Belvedere Shri Mariammen Dhuruga Temple is inviting patrons to be a part of history as their building plans co-insides with the Mariammen Prayer taking place at the weekend (see details in What’s on).

I

F there is one person who has learnt how to wield power, it is SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

South Africa has had many powerful politicians, trade unionists and business people, but Motsoeneng has emerged out of obscurity to become South Africa’s most colourful and influential media personality.

This is not because of any particular achievements in the field of broadcasting but because of his inflated sense of importance and his ability to keep his grip on the SABC in spite of a damning public protector report and court judg-

ments against him.

Motsoeneng has embarked on an unapologetic mission to turn the SABC into a pro-government propaganda machine, going to the extent of banning negative coverage of President Jacob Zuma because “he deserves a certain degree of respect”.

Motsoeneng previously issued a decree that the SABC should broadcast a 70% quota of positive news in its bulletins, irrespective of what is actually happening in the country.

Recently, Motsoeneng banned coverage of violent protest action on television news bulletins. Journalists who questioned this decision were suspended, sparking a backlash from the media fraternity and media freedom institutions.

This has not altered Motsoeneng’s swagger. He believes himself to be invincible and is dismissive of whatever criticism comes his way.

Following the sudden resignation of the acting group chief executive officer, Jimi Matthews, Motsoeneng waved off suggestions of a crisis at the

This is despite it being proven that Motsoeneng does not even possess a matric certificate.

The situation at the SABC is no different from other state-owned companies that are moribund through bad leadership. Motsoeneng was left to his own devices for far too long and allowed to fashion the SABC like his own kingdom.

Those who have only woken now to the fact that a megalomaniac is in charge of the public broadcaster will battle to dislodge him.

Dealing with rats and mice at home I

T is winter, which means that, like many us, rats and mice are looking for some­ where warm and cosy to spend their days.

For property owners, this means an in­ creased likelihood of rodents trying to make their way inside your house to set up home.

These nocturnal creatures are most ac­ tive between dusk and dawn, and usually hide from humans during the day.

It is often easier to spot the signs of a rodent problem than the actual pests themselves, so it’s important to know what to look for.

Are you worried you may have unwanted rodent guests lurking in your home?

Here are tips on how to spot and get rid of rodents.

Signs of a rodent problem Droppings Rodents do 50 to 80 droppings a night, small and dark (approximately 3­8 mm in length), scattered randomly. Look for drop­ pings particularly along walls, in cupboards or under sinks.

Grease marks Grease marks and smudges are caused by mouse fur constantly brushing against walls, floors and skirtings on regular routes.

You may find dark smears around holes or around corners too.

Urine pillars With heavy infestations, body grease combined with dirt and urine tend to build up into small mounds that are up to 4cm high and 1cm wide.

Scratching noises People often report hearing unusual scratching noises during the night when mice are most active. Listen for noises be­ tween partition walls, under floorboards, in false ceilings, basements and lofts.

Nests Mice use easy to shred materials such as newspaper and fabrics, together with other soft materials to line their nest.

Check lofts, suspended ceilings, cavity walls, under floorboards, behind fridges, under stoves and in airing cupboards for mice activity.

Nests will often contain young mice.

Tracks Rodent tracks and tail marks can show up in dusty environments such as unused lofts and basements. To check for activity, sprinkle flour, talcum powder or china clay and check for fresh tracks the next day.

Strong smell Mice urinate frequently and the urine has a strong ammonia­like smell. The smell may be strongest near the main site of ac­ tivity or in enclosed spaces. This smell can linger for a long time even after an infesta­ tion has been removed.

If you are going to try and catch a mouse, you need to know the best bait to use. In most cases, when people think of mice, they think of cheese, but did you know that mice aren’t really that passionate about cheese?

That’s not to say they won’t eat it, just that they won’t go out of their way to snack on it.

Mice do, however, love peanut butter, so if you are planning to try your hand at some DIY mouse control, peanut butter would be your best bet to lure them into a homemade trap.

How to make a humane DIY mouse trap • Take an empty toilet or paper towel roll and place a teaspoon of peanut butter at one of its ends.

• Place the roll on the edge of a surface, with the peanut butter end hanging off the edge.

• Below the roll, place an empty plastic

At a gala dinner hosted last week at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World, local businesses and partners pledged funding of R6-million to support the work of the foundation.

Adopt-a-school Foundation chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa spoke passionately at the event of his journey to his former school and of the humble beginnings of the Foundation in 2001.

Reddy said that Sibaya Corporate Social Investment (CSI) committee will participate in developing partnerships and programmes required to improve education in the region, citing the Matric Academic Development Initiative (MADI) which is at work in 11 high schools in Ilembe.

Since the inception of the casino, the Sibaya CSI Committee and The Sibaya Community Trust have contributed over R50-million towards education initiatives benefitting schools in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Increased collaboration between the private sector and local government is imperative for improving the quality education in our province, and ultimately driving future economic growth. Education is one of Sibaya’s key CSI focus areas.

“Through our support of the Adopta-School Foundation and other initiatives such as the KZN Science Centre’s outreach programme, Sibaya remains committed to providing environments conducive to the practice of good learning for our province’s young people,” said Reddy.

The Adopt-a-School Foundation works to mobilise the private sector, organisations and individuals to support the creation and enhancement of teaching and learning environments in disadvantaged schools. Emphasising their Whole School Development Model, the Foundation identifies schools in need and implements projects to improve academic, infrastruc-

tural, social and security environments.

This includes encouraging a handson, time bound relationship between the schools and their funders.

Ramaphosa started the Foundation shortly after he was approached by his former primary school, Tshilidzi Primary in Soweto, to assist with the donation of a fax machine. When he returned to his school to hand over the donation and saw the further needs of the school, the notion of the Adopt-a-School Foundation was born. In 2002, the Foundation was officially established by a group of concerned individuals including Ramaphosa and Dr James Motlatsi.

Since inception, the Foundation has adopted 621 schools, directly benefitting 734 796 pupils; trained 2 542 teachers; built 509 school facilities; cre-

ated 7 345 temporary jobs and supported 1182 SMMEs. There are 57 adopted schools in KZN. The Foundation recently launched its Health, Sanitation and Sexual Awareness campaign, which aims to keep girls in school.

The Foundation is currently working with the government in KZN on their Accelerated School Infrastructure Development Initiative which aims to transform mud schools in to centres of excellence. The pilot schools for this are Ingweniphaphama Primary School; Enhlanhleni Primary School and Lembe Combined School.

A portion of the R6-million in funding at the gala dinner at Sibaya will be used to ensure that learners in selected schools have their eyesight tested and provide those pupils with spectacles where needed.

The inter-school Cross Country is scheduled for Friday 22 July at Cottonlands Primary School.

Successful participants will proceed to the Circuit Finals the following Friday.

The Tonver Games finals culminates

on 29 and 30 July in Tongaat where all the top schools in each group will battle for the honours of being declared “Tonver champions”.

The Friendship Games takes place on 13 August in Chatsworth. Tonver will compete with Cadssa, Phoenix and Cumberwood in the codes of soccer, netball, volleyball, table tennis and chess in both primary and secondary schools.

On 17 September the Circuit Manager’s Cup will take place in Tongaat where top teams in each circuit competes against each other.

Therefore, organisers are hosting an important council meeting to finalise details of the above events.

The meeting takes place on Wednesday 20 July at Silverdale Primary School at 1pm. Attendance is mandatory for all schools.

HESE are the first photographs of the open-top version of the LaFerrari, the new limited-edition special series aimed at clients and collectors who refuse to compromise on the joy of al fresco driving even when at the wheel of a supercar.

The name and technical characteristics of the new car will be announced at the Paris International Motor Show, as will the number of examples Ferrari will build.

However, all available examples have already been sold after a special preview to clients and the order book is closed. The new limitededition special series will be available with a removable carbon-fibre hard top and a removable soft top.

It has the same running gear and performance figures as the original LaFerrari, sporting a 800 cv V12 (with a specific power output of 128 cv/l) coupled with a 120 kW electric motor (163 cv), unleashing 963 cv in total. Significant and extensive modifications have been made to the chassis with the aim of retaining the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as the coupé version.

The car’s aerodynamics have also been further honed to guarantee the same drag coefficient when driving in the open configuration.

A large contingent of members completed the 12km, 15km and 20km routes.

Panthers Comrades silver medalist Themba Qhaniso, as part of his training programme completed the 12km walk in a fantastic time of 1:04:46.
