MANY people either look forward to the festive pe­ riod and begin their countdown to Christmas in Oc­ tober, while others are left running for the hills to avoid the ‘silliness’ that comes with the season.

As we get ready to wind down and take a breath­ er, we decided to reflect on some of the wonderful reasons to celebrate the year that was.

Yes, we can talk about some of the lowlights as well (no pun on the word ‘lights’), but that would not be very festive at all.

The team at the Fever has had a wonderful year and has shared some truly remarkable memories with you.

We’ve had an action­packed year from meeting wonderful individuals who are slowly changing their communities one step at a time to covering campaigns that shows a proactive community who are willing to fight for their beloved home towns.

To those people who are continuously going the

extra mile to serve others, we would like to salute you and thank you for allowing us to share your sto­ ries.

This year South Africans voted hoping for the best – many are now glued to the parliament ses­ sion coverage because you never know what to ex­ pect. In 2015 we will be joining the queues for the by­elections and once again, hoping for positive change.

We know we live in a beautiful city and another reason to be a proud Durbanite is Durban has been voted an official new Seven Wonder City of the world.

The picturesque beaches, rolling hills and breath­taking skyline together with a host of won­ derful inhabitants, sets us apart from the rest of South Africa.

After 40 years, the Miss World title is held by a South African.

FEVER 3 Winkle resident stabbed amanzimtoti

A

MAN was stabbed after two robbers entered his home in Winklespruit on Wednesday 7 September.

According Amanzimtoti SAPS communications officer Captain Charlene van der Spuy, the victim and his wife were asleep when they were awoken by the sound of glass breaking.

“They heard a loud bang as if the door was being kicked and then two unknown men, armed with knives, entered their house,” she said.

The wife ran to the bathroom and locked herself in, but the suspects kicked open the bathroom door.

“The suspects demanded cash and the keys to their vehicle, a Ford Ranger, which was parked outside.

“The men went through their belongings and took a laptop, cellphone, Tablet, wallet and cash.

The suspects stabbed the husband Thembinkosi Ntongana in the chest before fleeing in the Ranger.

Ntongana was rushed to the hospital and a friend alerted the police.

SAPS women­led operation yields favourable outcome

A FEMALE-DRIVEN operation proved successful for local police during August.

To commemorate Women’s Month policewomen from SAPS and members of the traffic department conducted a roadblock on the N2 south-bound.

The successes included:

Witnesses urged to assist POLICE are searching for witnesses of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on 26 April at 7.30am on Old Main Road, Felekisi, Amanzimtoti.

The accident involve a school bus (yellow Mazda Marathon) and a Toyota Avanza (gold).

According to police the school bus carried 14 children between the ages of six and 13.

THE August winner of the Sapphire Coast Photo competition is Rudi Strydom with his “iconic” photograph of the showers at Baggies Beach.

Strydom said he started photography as a hobby 10 years ago when he lived in Phalaborwa, next to the Kruger National Park.

Strydom said he is inspired by the beautiful KwaZulu-Natal winter sunrises and loves the outdoors.

He took the winning photograph with a Canon 7D MKII, a SIGMA 1020MM lens, with the following settings - F/3.5, ISO 100, F/22, 1/30SEC AV. “For this specific shot, I wanted to capture an early winter morning,” he

Amateur photographers are called to submit their “inland” photographs for September.

Sapphire Coast Tourism is looking for pictures of inland landscapes or inland tourism activities, or an inland cultural experience, among others.

Keep in mind that only pictures taken in 2016 and in the Sapphire Coast Tourism area (see map below) will be accepted as entries.

The Sapphire Coast covers an area stretching from Amanzimtoti to Umkomaas. A variety of seaside communities extend from Athlone Park and Amanzimtoti, suburbs of Doonside, Warner Beach, Winkelspruit, Illovo Beach and Karridene, and the coastal resorts of Umgababa, Widenham, Umkomass and Clansthal.

Also included is the industrial hub of Southgate Park and the historical base of Adams Mission.

Other centres comprise KwaMakutha, Ezimbokodweni, Magabheni, Umbumbulu, Kingsburgh, St Winifred’s, Lovu and Umnini.

“We are looking forward to seeing the hidden treasures,” said Sapphire Coast Tourism chairperson, Monique de Kock.

HE ATKV (Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuur Vereniging) Natalia hosted a spring dance on 3 September as a fund-raiser for Operation Bobbi Bear and subsequently donated R6 000 to the non-profit organisation.

“The dance was a huge success with 160 people attending.

“The idea was formed when I heard Eureka Olivier, administrative and financial director, talk about Bobbi Bear at the Durban South Business Forum and decided we have to help them.

“I started talking to my staff at ATKV, looking at ways we could help.

We host a dance every three months and the staff suggested we do a donations dance. No sooner said than we started planning,” said ATKV resort manager, Elza-Lee Pretorius.

The staff did an awesome job decorating the hall for this good cause.

“We now have started something that we want to continue with, this was our third dance and our biggest to date, it might have something to do with the Bobbi Bear effect,” Pretorius said.

The ATKV also donated unclaimed items that holidaymakers left behind to the organisation. We normally sell these items, but you are welcome to use it or sell it. We washed and packed all the clothes and will look for curtains as well,” she added.

Olivier said it assisted them that the fund-raiser was mostly done by the ATKV so that the organisation could focus on their core function, rescuing raped and abused children.

She said their association with the ATKV will also hopefully break the perception that they only assist Zulu or English-speaking children and that they also assist Afrikaans-speaking children.

“What I love about the ATKV is their passion for people and children.

“The dance was a family event and people could bring their children along and they could play safely while parents enjoyed the dancing,” Olivier said.

She thanked Mike Patrick from DJ Miklus, who offered his services for free and catered for every taste in music.

“His sound and professionalism was superb,” she added.

NE thing I have delighted in over the past nine or so weeks, as I was plucked out of my regular activities to attend to some physical re-engineering of my skeleton and once the pain medication had sufficiently worked its way out of my system, was that I was able to read more than I have of late.

I mean reading for pleasure. Just absorbing the words and thoughts and not having to interpret them, decipher deeper meanings, nor explain the intricacies of the plot. Just read, delight in the prose and enter a different space with different ideas and experience exotic places.

TV and movies can’t quite match the mental embrace of a scene unfolding in one’s mind as the words mix with your own experiences into pictures off the page. The way the images reshape as you glean more information in each line of the story. In a novel, the villain has all the physical characteristics of what you find villainous and the heroine looks like the love of your life and you contribute to the story as you fill in the gaps, mould the characters and understand the scenery.

Amanzimtoti Sports Centre Amanzimtoti Tennis Club news Wednesday and Friday mornings are open for women’s social games.

No social tennis was played last Saturday due to the rain.

League recommences this weekend. On Saturday 17 September both

ladies teams will play at home against Bellevue 1 and Bellevue 3 respectively.

Play will commence at 1.30pm on four courts.

Social players please bear with us until later in the afternoon when courts will be available.

The ladies matches, which should have been played on Saturday 20 August, will be rescheduled.

Our men’s team will play Durban CC 1 at home on Sunday morning 18 September. Players will be contacted.

Our development clinic takes place

each Saturday morning for the duration of the school term.

If your child shows an interest in tennis, bring them down to the club on Saturday from 9am to 10am. There

are racquets available and children must wear suitable shoes.

‘Paddle for the Planet’ pay­off JUST weeks after the Durban beachfront was ravaged by pollution from the unseasonal mid-winter rains, a ground-breaking project, funded by the Paddle for the Planet initiative held last year, will soon see the implementation of the Booms, Bins and Bags project aimed at preventing pollution in the Mngeni River from reaching Blue Lagoon and the KZN coastline.

Paddle for the Planet is a global paddling relay that unites paddlers, creates awareness and is a movement for conservation. The goal is to have simultaneous paddling events happening sequentially, at a specific time, in every time zone and in each country around the world, uniting paddlers of any type of paddling craft through the global relay.

In addition to raising awareness Paddle for the Planet raised R60 000, which has been entirely ploughed into the pioneering pollution control project on the Mngeni estuary.

The Paddle for the Planet awareness day raised R60 000 for the protection of waterways and oceans and with that money a collaboration of academics, scientist and environmentalists formalised the concept of Booms, Bins and Bags.

The team that comprised of experts from the Mace Labs at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Duzi Umgeni Conservation Trust (DUCT) as well as volunteers from Paddle for the Planet, spent a lot of time gathering information to decipher where the best position to put the booms and bins would be.

Through research the team gathered enough data from their various points on the Durban beach near Blue Lagoon in order to make an educated judgment call as to whether their programme will be a success after their pilot phase.

Establishing baseline levels of sediment particle size as well as microplastic concentration has meant they will be able to clearly judge the success of their project when the first booms, bins and bags are installed on the troubled Mngeni River.

“The tests have given us a chance to see the effects of microplastics and polystyrene pollution,” Dr Deborah Robertson-Andersson, the director of Mace Labs said.

“The whole testing phase was set up in order for us to try and get more insight into how plastics break down and their effect on the ecology.”

‘Shooting whales’ for a cause ALMOST hunted to extinction 40 years ago, whales are now at the heart of a “citizen science” project launched by Wildlands last week.

It is called Whale Time and hopes to engage the public in monitoring the migration of whales along the KZN coast.

To participate, people upload photos of whale sightings on the Whale

Time website, providing the GPS position of where each photo was taken and other information about each whale encounter. The envisaged outcome is an interactive, public data base on whale behaviour and habitat use.

“All sightings, from a boat or the shore, should be reported as long they are accompanied by a photo,” said

“There was a lot of brainstorming that went into the entire project, but now having something tangible makes the process more real and we are looking forward to seeing the success of our project.

“This project is gaining good momentum and we are hoping it can set the tone for others to follow in terms of conservation,” she added.

Gerrard said the Whale Time team were particularly keen on photos of whales in action - blowing, breaching, fluking, lob-tailing, sailing or sky-hopping - a term for a whale “standing” vertically, its head out the water, enabling it to check out its surroundings.

“The associated educational aspects of the project would not only make people aware of how close several species of whales came to extinction, but also highlight new threats that whales face today.

“For instance, many people do not know that Durban once had the largest

land-based whaling operation in the world,” said Gerrard.

More than 28 000 whales were hunted and killed off Durban’s coastline between 1907 and 1975. South Africa banned whaling in 1979 – and it was estimated that there were as few as 340 humpback whales and less than 100 Southern Right whales left in the southwest Indian Ocean along the coast of South Africa.

Through on-going conservation efforts these two species have partially recovered. Latest surveys suggest that as many as 7 000 humpback whales and more than 1 000 Southern Right whales migrate past Durban each year.

Supported by Wildlands, Grindrod Bank, The Blue Fund and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the Whale Time team is now collating

available data and photos of humpback whale migration on KwaZuluNatal’s coast.

Getting good pictures of humpback whales will help the team create a photo-identification catalogue featuring individual whales. The Whale Time crew will then be able to collaborate with other scientists in tracking the behaviour and movement of these individual whales around the world.

While Whale Time encourages people to go whale watching, it is important to respect whale space and observe the rules and codes of conduct in observing these mammals when out at sea.
