MEET JOHN PATTERSON

A
few years ago, a less-than-stellar driver totaled my car and my wife’s car in our parking lot in one fell swoop. It was obviously a huge surprise to us, and quite the burden to wake up to on a Saturday morning. Through a day of many phone calls, and the help of friends and family, we worked our way through the parking lot massacre. I quickly realized how important and comforting it was to have not only a professional insurance agent at my side, but also someone who genuinely cared about me and my situation. While you can have a good insurance company, or people who care, I think it’s truly invaluable to get both of those traits in one. It seems that Goochland may be getting lucky with their newest insurance agency addition. John Patterson has been working in the insurance business for over 30 years, and as of March, he has a small committed team in the Goochland area. Only a few months in, and he’s ready to make a difference in the area. “I think we can bring a lot of value to the Goochland community,” John says.

You can see John’s community values manifested in his commitment to volunteering. He’s been a member of Innsbrook Rotary for over a decade, and has been a liaison for its Meals on Wheels program for seven years. “I think it’s one of the best grassroots efforts for the community,” explains John, adding that he experiences an intrinsic joy in being able to meet with those in need in your home area. Growing up in Hagerstown, Maryland, John watched his father’s commitment to his community shine through his time with the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis organization. John’s volunteer-minded lifestyle almost certainly extends to his team at State Farm, “We do want to get involved, and be a value to the area,’’ he explains. “Some of my guys are helping to deliver the Chamber books that came out recently.” And he’s always looking for more ways to help. While John’s commitment to his community is evident, his focus on his job has simultaneously excelled. Thirty years with State Farm has brought him his fair share of accolades, including being a nine-time recipient of the Million Dollar Round Table award, presented to insurance agents who are at the top of their game. “You’re with the top of the top,’’ John says. “And you know how to help your clients.” The award and organization, founded in 1927, showcase members who, “demonstrate exceptional professional knowledge, strict ethical conduct and outstanding client service.” So, while you would be happy just to have a good soul like John on your team, you’re going to also want someone who knows the ins and outs of all things insurance when the time comes. I’ve picked a few places where both you and your fourlegged friend will be welcomed. Let’s start here in the West End: Bar Louie, in the Short Pump Town Center (11788 West Broad St.) allows you to bring your pup and enjoy their varied menu. While you can’t bring the dog into the restaurant in order to access the patio, there is a direct outside patio entrance. Just beyond Bar Louie, Carytown Burger & Fries Short Pump (200 Town Center West) welcomes pets on their patio. And Deep Run Roadhouse at 12379 Gayton Road also offers a pet friendly patio, although you’ll need to order at the counter inside. I’m sure Muttsy will be happy to wait outside for a chance to enjoy some of the area’s best barbecue. Café Cattura located at 5811 Grove Avenue welcomes four legged companions to accompany their human types for those crisp, chilly springtime evenings by the fireplace. If you’re in the mood for flatbreads and wine and an all-around good time, you and Spot will be happy here. Your Pekingese will feel very welcomed on the patio at the relatively new Beijing on Grove at 5710 Grove Avenue. And, If you and your Corgi enjoy shopping for fine wines or craft beers, head on in to Corks & Kegs at 7110 Patterson Avenue. Your pet will enjoy meeting theirs. Perhaps your English Pointer can direct you to Stony Point Fashion Park (9200 Stony Point Parkway), which offers a delightful dog-friendly shopping environment, in a park-like atmosphere featuring beautiful fountains and local architectural features. There, you’ll find some of the most sought after retailers and restaurants in Metro Richmond. Finally, if you seek something special for your pup, you both can go shopping at the Lora Robins Gift Shop in the SPCA, located at 2519 Hermitage Road. If you haven’t heard of beer can chicken - you’re missing out. This recipe is for busybodies to mimic the delicious taste of this famous recipe with a slow cooker. The ingredients are simple and easy to find in your pantry, but the taste is complex and finger licking good. You can let this beer can chicken simmer all day long, or you can pop it in the slow cooker for a few hours before work or a summer barbeque. No matter what, this dish is sure to be a hit.
INGREDIENTS
1 6-lb chicken 2 tablespoons smoked paprika 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons coarse pepper 2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves 2 teaspoons dried thyme leaves 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 2 tablespoons butter, softened 1 can (16 ounces) dark beer aluminium foil, bunched into 4 balls
DIRECTIONS
1. Place bunched rolls of foil in bottom of 6-quart slow cooker and pour in beer. 2. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Pull skin gently way from bird. 3. Mix all dry seasonings together. 4. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of seasoning blend into butter. 5. Spread butter mixture under skin of chicken. 6. With clean dry hands, rub remaining spice blend onto chicken. 7. Place chicken on top of foil balls in slow cooker. 9. Cover and cook on high for 4-6 hours, or low on 7-8 hours. Check the temperature — chicken is done when the temperature is 165-170 in the thickest part of the thigh. Continue to cook if needed.
