From the Editor Imagine sitting down and staring at your blank screen. You’re bracing yourself to write your first From the Editor letter. Hoping to glean inspiration from a different source, you glance toward the open door and in walks a muse. It’s your lucky day! And you haven’t, in the immortal words of Hercule Poirot, exercised one single little gray cell. As it turned out, this muse didn’t have much to add to my preexisting interior monologue. “Write about how great it is to be here and working on these magazines,” he said. Billy Davis, President and Publisher of Richmond Navigator, cracked a smile and added, “You don’t really have to write that.” The truth is that I do think that it’s great to be here in Richmond and working for a group of magazines each focused on a unique region. And it really is an ideal gig for an adventurous relative newcomer and a not-so-new writer and editor. With just over two years under my Richmond residential belt, I’m delighted to have a job that includes talking with locals and writing about my adopted habitat. So why would a native Long Islander who’s lived on both coasts and multiple states choose Richmond as home base? Long story short: a magazine article about best places to live. I could count the reasons why right here but why not explore our magazines and find out for yourself? Operating under the umbrella of Richmond Navigator, West End’s Best, River City, Chesterfield Living and Hanover Lifestyle magazines focus on the things that bind locals to our neck of the woods and entice the rest of us to call it home. Sometimes those are the same things; sometimes they’re different. Our magazines and online presence cover a wide range of topics from new restaurants to favorite watering holes to local business profiles, and regular features on real estate trends, health and seniors to stories about regional and far-flung travel destinations and events. Whatever it is about the area that appeals to you, we hope you’ll enjoy discovering even more on our pages.

Zach Brown

Zach first moved to Richmond to attend VCU, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Writing in 2010. Serving as a poster child for obsessive behavior, Zach has never been able to casually enjoy anything as subjects that interest him hit ‘all-consuming’ levels in a matter of days. The greatest example of this defect being his love of writing. When he wraps up his daily word quota, you’ll find him playing drums with his band, reading, or enjoying a craft beer from one of his many favorite local brewers.

Whitney Kiatsuranon

A native Richmonder, Whitney enjoys freelance writing, hiking along the James and exploring the city like a tourist. When she is not trying new restaurants and socializing over wine, you’ll find her at home in the Fan being an ordinary goofball with her two kids. While she loves her hometown at any time you’ll find her enjoying some of her favorite places such as NYC, Charleston or her all-time favorite (so far) Saint Martin. All of the adventures she seeks on a day-to-day basis make for interesting articles on beauty, food and fitness.

Melanie Rasnic

Melanie Rasnic is a Richmond area native and a big fan of all things RVA. She graduated in 2014 from VCU with her bachelor’s degree in science, and in 2017 from Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia with her master’s in physician assistant studies. She is thrilled to be back home and promises to never leave Richmond for that long again.

In Our Next Issue: In January-February we’ll offer the annual Look Good/Feel Good feature. Articles will focus on a variety of health and wellness topics from sleep to fitness to diets. Our home features will focus on creative solutions to stashing your stuff in closets that work, creating the best bedroom for a good night’s rest and the latest flooring trends. Winter is the perfect time to get cozy with someone you love so we’ll fill you in our favorite romantic dining spots. Look for upcoming issues of all of our magazines in early January and online at RichmondNavigator.com

Dave Masucci’s luscious portrait of Palermo’s Pappardelle Carbonara captures the mandatory creaminess of this well-known pasta dish. WHAT’S GOING ON? All the leaves are brown. And the sky is gray. But there’s something quite beautiful about the season. In case you need someone to remind you as to just what is so great about this time of year, here are some past articles that you can find simply by going to RichmondNavigator.com. Come on. Get out the ol’ laptop and let’s start searching. Remember to bring your mittens. One of my favorite indoor cold weather sports is sipping on a hot toddy. While we didn’t feature any toddies in our November, 2013 feature, “Cozy Bars and Winter Cocktails,” we did share some of the best winter drinks from several local establishments. Most of these restaurants are still around, but even if you can’t find the drinks, you can find the recipes by simply searching WINTER COCKTAILS.

Would you like to getaway to a place where men are men and winters are winters? Bayfield (near the Apostle Islands) in northwest Wisconsin is just such a place. Discover this beautiful frozen paradise in “Enjoy a Real Winter This Year.” Search: APOSTLE ISLANDS.

Annie Tobey wrote a fascinating article back in 2014 entitled “Embracing Virginia’s Winter.” Search: WINTER and get ready to embrace away.

If you’re more of the active sort, always showing off your finely-honed physique, stay away from me. But you’ll find some good winter workout ideas in Susie Galvez’ piece from this past January, “Winter Workouts Without the Work.” Just search WINTER WORKOUTS.

If you’re NOT the athletic type, but still want some winter fun without having to strap on skis and fall off a mountain, you’ll want to read Jody Rathgeb’s “Look Mom, No Skis!,” from September, 2013. Search: LOOK MOM. Nothing takes the chill off of a chilly day any better than a hot bowl of soup. We went in search of some of the city’s best soups back in January, 2016. Just looking at the pictures can be warming. But enjoying the bowls that we featured will make you feel good inside and out. To re-discover our ISO Soups, just search SOUPS.

All this and a Happy Hour Guide, too! That’s right. Keep up with the current Happy Hours. RichmondNavigator.com has the best guides in town. Search: Happy Hour 12 Chesterfield Living

VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS — November 18, 2017 to March 11, 2018

TERRACOTTA ARMY Legacy of the First Emperor of China by Zach Brown

ore than 2,000 years ago, after the death of the first Chinese emperor, a 38-square mile necropolis was constructed around his tomb. It included an underground army of nearly 8,000 unique, life-sized terracotta warriors. Now, Richmonders can get an upclose look at 10 of the soldiers from Nov. 18 through March 11 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts new exhibition, Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China.

16 Chesterfield Living

RichmondNavigator.com

Though you may not know his name, the story and works of China’s first emperor echo through time. During his reign, Emperor Qin Shi Huang unified the splintered Chinese Kingdoms under the Qin dynasty and ordered the creation of what is now called the Great Wall of China. Paradoxically, the Emperor’s search for immortality may have killed him since he regularly drank elixirs containing mercury. After his death, an entire underground city was constructed as part of his mausoleum and guarded by the terracotta soldiers, their chariots and horses. The mythic necropolis was undisturbed until 1974 when Chinese farmers discovered the great tomb while digging for a well. Known as one of the most important archaeological

finds of the 20th century, the terracotta army has fascinated archeologists and historians for decades. The VMFA offers two audio tours of Chinese weapons, ceramics and ornaments dating as far back as 1046 BC, in addition to sculpted sentries of Qin Shi Huang. Since the completion of the VMFA’s expansion in 2010, the museum has acted as host to popular historical and cultural art exhibit, such as Visions from the Congo, Hollywood Costume and Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb. With the Terracotta Army exhibit, the museum promises to delight Richmonders and tourists once again with this view of artifacts and statues crafted over 2,000 years ago. The VMFA will also host an Archaeology Forum on Feb. 2, which will allow museum visitors to hear from scholars and archeologists from both China and the United States. Don’t miss your chance to walk through history and see the terracotta embodiment of the immortality of Qin Shi Huang. Admission is $20 for the general public and free for VMFA members.

Business Watch

Experimac Midlothian The Apple of Your Eye By Steve Cook

C

NBC’s All America Economic Survey found that the average American household owns more than two Apple products,* be it an iPhone, an iPad, a Mac computer or an iWatch. If Chesterfield resident Tim Crum has his way, the number of Apple products in Richmond-area homes is going to grow considerably. Crum is the owner of the local Experimac Midlothian franchise, located at 13614 Hull Street Road (next to the former Martin’s and soon-to-open Publix). If you’re not familiar with Experimac, perhaps you ought to be. I recently paid them a visit, and I have to tell you, if you had blindfolded me and dropped me inside the store, I would have had a hard time distinguishing the place from the typical Apple Store that you find in the large malls, except that the prices were considerably lower.

That’s because Experimac offers virtually a full line of refurbished Apple products at about 40- to 60-percent less than retail prices. Experimac will also buy your used Macs and other Apple products, or you can trade your device in for a newer, refurbished model. If this sounds somewhat like a Car Max for computers, that might be because Experimac founder Jim Muir used the Car Max concept as a business model when he started his company about a decade ago in a garage in West Palm Beach, Florida. It wasn’t until about three years ago, however, that Muir took this one-of-a-kind concept worldwide through a franchising program. Today, there are more than 100 Experimac retail locations across the United States, with a couple of locations in Europe, as well. When you purchase a refurbished computer, laptop, iPad or any device from Experimac, you can be assured that the product has been put 18 Chesterfield Living

through an extensive 29-point checkup prior to being offered for resale. The company, however, is much more than discounted prices on previously owned Apple products. Experimac performs all out-of-warranty repairs on Apple computers and other devices, including upgrading Macintosh computers with higher capacity storage, installing more memory (RAM), replacing logic boards and performing just about any other Apple repair. You can also purchase a full line of accessories for your devices, such as chargers, batteries, software and much more. They even repair your iPhone screens and non-Apple products. Check their website (Experimac.com/MidlothianVA) for the full range of products and services offered. But, for all that Experimac Midlothian has to offer — and there’s a lot – perhaps, the most important “product” is their customer service. Crum says that’s what most appealed to him when he first investigated the franchise opportunity. “We make every effort to take care of our customers,” he says. That includes using his network of resources to locate hard-to-find and vintage Apple devices for customers. It’s no wonder that Experimac Midlothian has received five-star reviews on Facebook and Google. Part of that “five-star” service incudes Crum’s policy of “never charging for easy,” as he says. That means, if your problem is fairly simple or, perhaps, you just need a little advice to overcome a problem, he’s not going to charge you to lend a helping hand. For great customer service, amazing savings, expert repairs and a full line of accessories, it only makes sense to check with the folks at Experimac Midlothian first. Going anywhere else simply does not compute. For more information on products and services, call Experimac Midlothian at 804-608-0772.

Customer Service and Quality Craftsmanship Hallmarks of Virginia Exterior Products

V

by Thomas Gresham

irginia Exterior Products’ customers have grown increasingly savvy in recent years. The proliferation of TV programs chronicling house renovations and the abundance of in-depth information online means that homeowners have become exceptionally well-informed about home improvement, said George Yesbeck Jr., president and co-owner. “They do their homework. They know what they want before we even get there. We simply bring their dreams to fruition.” Consequently, stellar workmanship and attentive customer service are more important than ever. Fortunately, those traits have been points of emphasis for Virginia Exterior Products since Yesbeck’s father founded the business in 1962. The scope of the work has widened in the years since its inception, but Yesbeck said Virginia ExGeorge Yesbeck Jr. terior Products continues to prioritize the customer, just as it did under his father. Virginia Exterior Products, which Yesbeck co-owns with his brother, Michael, specializes in James Hardie fiber cement siding, insulated vinyl siding, windows, doors and all of the accessories that accompany a professional remodeling project. Virginia Exterior Products touts an A+

rating from the Better Business Bureau and recognition from Angie’s List with multiple Super Service awards. “It’s very important to us to treat every customer fairly,” Yesbeck said. Wallace Cox enlisted Virginia Exterior Products to install HardiePlank siding and new windows, among other projects, at his home. “They arrived early and worked hard every day, he said. “You could see their attention to detail as they progressed. Any request we made was immediately completed.” Claire Eller turned to Virginia Exterior Products based on the recommendations of neighbors when it was time to replace her windows. She appreciated Yesbeck’s attentiveness and advice from the outset, and there were no hidden charges or attempts to upsell products. “The crew that came out and replaced the windows were great,” Eller said. “They did the whole house in one day. We could not be happier.” Yesbeck and the rest of the Virginia Exterior Products team understand the value of a home to its owner. “We love to meet with different homeowners and help them transform their homes,” he said. “It’s a great feeling when the job is done and they’re happy. After all, that’s what’s kept us in business for 55 years.” For more information, phone 804-358-5373, or visit them online at VirginiaExteriorProducts.com.

WHAT’S BAKING AT HOBBY HILL FARM FRESH? by Steve Cook

T

he little store in Powhatan that we’ve all come to know and love has become even more loveable. I’m talking about Hobby Hill Farm Fresh, located at 2652 Anderson Highway. If you have never visited, you’ll be amazed to discover the wide variety of gifts. There’s everything from their house-made jams and jellies to soaps and candles to gift baskets and hand-painted glassware. And I haven’t even scratched the surface. Speaking of “scratch,” Hobby Hill Farm Fresh has now added madefrom-scratch, custom-decorated cakes, cupcakes and cookies to their repertoire. I visited the store recently and met two lovely ladies who share a true passion for their crafts. I first spoke with Lisa Nye, who has an art degree from VCU. Lisa is putting her talents to good use creating the most beautifully and intricately decorated cookies you’d ever hope to sink your teeth into. These cookies are as much a delight to one’s eyes as they are to one’s taste buds. Lisa says the sugar cookies can be baked using a variety of flavors such as almond, vanilla, lemon or or-

Whatever the occasion, Lisa can design the perfect cookie for you. “I have a passion for art,” Lisa says. “I love what I’m doing,” I think you’ll love what she is doing with that passion as well. Next, I spoke with Linda Carnahan. Linda is in charge of baking the custom-decorated cakes. After looking at samples of some of the creative works, such as one with a tuna jumping right out of a cake that she had baked for a child, I asked her if she had a background in custom baking. “No,” Linda replied modestly, “I’m just a grandma.” Well, that may be the most important thing a person could be. But Linda says her only cake-baking experience until recently was baking for the kids. Today, Hobby Hill Farm Fresh can offer customdecorated cakes for virtually any occasion. With Lisa and Linda in the kitchen, Hobby Hill Farm Fresh provides additional

reasons to visit regularly. While a little advance notice is needed to have your cookies or cakes custom decorated just for you (two weeks is preferred), you may be able to purchase some of their goodies, which may be available in the store, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Yes, there are many reasons to love Hobby Hill Farm Fresh, and those reasons just got a little bit sweeter.

SENIORS ADVENTURES IN AGING

A GIFT FOR THE AGES F

by Constance Whitney

ull disclosure: I have a birthday coming up. And the holidays are just around the corner, too. Fuller disclosure: I want for nothing. I have an amazing life, full of love and laughter, health and prosperity. I’ve got an amazing family and an even more amazing group of wonderfully eccentric friends. My life’s cup, as they say, runneth over. Also runneth-ing over is my mantle, my shelving units, my closet, under my bed and the various storage units in my garage. My kitchen cabinets are so full that even the dust has to go find somewhere else to settle. In short, I’ve got way more than too much stuff. That’s what happens when you live a lifetime. You accumulate. True, some of the stuff is priceless: the rainbow my grandson drew for me is worth more to me than an original Rembrandt; the letter my son wrote me from his first week at Fork Union is now being guarded better than the U.S. Constitution. But 90 percent of the rest is just stuff; stuff that requires dusting. And arranging. And more dusting. Fullest disclosure: I really hate dusting. As the season of “show your love by giving” approaches, I polled my friends (the ones who contributed to my stuff, and have stuff mountains of their own to which I have been faithfully contributing) to see what their thoughts are on the annual adding to the incredible accumulations that we all have. Over several bottles of Cooper Vineyards’ best, we got down to the nitty gritty: what does a really great gift look like at our age?

It was easier to determine what it didn’t look like. Unanimously, we declared it didn’t look like stuff. We then quickly excluded anything made by our grandkids from our “no stuff” edict. If grandson number five wants to make a macaroni necklace like his four older siblings did, go for it. You can never have too many macaroni necklaces. But for the rest of everyone, the no-more-stuff ruling stands — no matter how cute that tchotchke looked at the Christmas Bazaar. We also decided that a great gift did not look like something we need. We are all of the age to know that we need new socks, a new frying pan or new battery cables for our car, and, thankfully, have the means to fulfill those needs ourselves. We also decided, slightly less than unanimously, that we didn’t need more bling. We are mostly bling-y enough at this point in our lives. We have enough perfume. Really. Lingerie? Um, no. After a few more bottles, we narrowed the list down considerably and came up with the winner: time. That’s what we all, unanimously, said we wanted. We want time with our loved ones and with our friends, riding horses and watching sunsets. We want time together to go to the Caribbean and sink our toes in the sand. We want time together to drive up to New York City and see the Rockettes’ holiday show. We want time to snuggle up on the sofa with a big bowl of popcorn, watch the snow fall outside and binge-watch House of Cards – together. Time truly is the greatest gift of all.

Your Beautiful Smile by Susie Galvez

“Beauty is power; a smile is its sword,” wrote 17th century English naturalist, John Ray. Four centuries later his observation holds true. Studies show that people consider a smile to be the most important element of a good first impression. Ninety-four percent of men and women said they notice a person’s smile before noticing eyes, height or figure. In addition, a person who is smiling is generally perceived to be friendly and approachable, and an attractive smile connotes a friendly personality. But what if you think your smile doesn’t reflect the truest, best, most fabulous you? Not to worry. Advances in aesthetic dentistry, including teeth whitening, veneers and implants are now common treatments. Prosthetic dentistry can restore an incomplete smile. If your smile is af24 Chesterfield Living

fected by tooth loss, for example, prosthetic dentistry can help by adding a natural-looking replacement tooth. Here are a few procedures that can make it easier to flaunt a healthy, youthful-looking smile:

Dental bonding can cover up chips and cracks and increase the size of an undersized tooth.

Porcelain veneers, which are lab-crafted to your unique mea-

surements, will give you a customized smile that perfectly matches your natural smile.

Braces. Forget about old-fashioned tin grins. Thanks to modern cos-

metic dentistry, you can change your smile in a matter of months with

treatments that are barely noticeable during the process.

Gum lift is a procedure where the gum is lifted to expose more of the teeth and eliminate excess gums for a more aesthetic smile.

Professional teeth whitening. Stained teeth are the

most commonly requested procedure in cosmetic dentistry. Treatment can include an in-office visit to create the best program and followed up with a home care program to continue the progress. A beautiful, healthy smile can increase confidence, build self-esteem, and even take years off your appearance. Whether you want your teeth repaired, replaced, straightened or whitened, start by making an appointment with your dentist to evaluate your options. Five Reasons to Smile Look more attractive. Studies show that people who smile are seen as healthier and more approachable.

Improve your mood. Even if you’re not feeling espe-

cially joyful, a smile can help trigger a happier frame of mind.

Spread the love. Smiling really is contagious because humans are wired to mirror each other’s facial expressions.

Boost immunity. Your body relaxes when you smile which contributes to a healthier immune system.

Lower blood pressure and stress levels. When you smile endorphins (one of the so-called happiness hormones) rise and help lower blood pressure.

Getting Ahead of a Headache D

by Melanie Rasnic

ull, throbbing pain around your eye sockets. A vice-like feeling of pressure engulfing your skull. What is the worst thing about a headache? Is it that you can’t predict when it will happen? Or is it that whoever coined the term used the symptoms to create a diagnosis? Many of us know the pain and frustration of having a headache. If we search online for answers we’re faced with a wide array of possible causes. Do I blame it on my friend’s loud chewing or just accept the brain tumor option? The truth probably lies safely on the spectrum between the two. Let’s look at some common causes of headaches that can send people to the doctor:

Tension headache The most common type of headache, it’s often described as a tight and/or band-like pressure. Pain is typically diffuse, or all over, and bilateral, or on both sides. It often causes muscle soreness in the neck and shoulders but generally does not interfere with daily activities. This type can be safely treated by lifestyle modifications and overthe-counter pain relievers. Stress may play a role; more common in women (there’s a joke in there somewhere).

Migraine headache Also common, it is generally described as unilateral or on one side, throbbing and excruciatingly painful, with symptoms often lasting for days. Many report an aura or rush of sensory disturbances such as flashes of bright light, tingling sensations, blurry vision, etc. It’s common for sufferers (often women) to experience nausea, vomiting and 26 Chesterfield Living

dizziness. These will interfere with your day, as physical activity often makes them worse, and they can be triggered by sights, sounds, smells and foods. Avoiding these triggers as much as possible is key, which can be challenging. Some sufferers find relief by resting in a dark room, while others find that migraine medicines work best (they usually end in –triptan). It is believed that migraines are the result of fluctuations in neurotransmitters and that there is a strong genetic component.

Cluster headache This type of headache will hover around one eye and cause a burning, teary, congested sensation in that eye. Cluster headaches often occur nightly at the same time, and the cluster period may last as long as 12 weeks, after which a person (usually a man) may be headache-free for many months. Although the exact cause is unknown, the pattern seems to suggest that the hypothalamus (our body clock) plays a role. These can often be treated with preventative medications or oxygen therapy. Didn’t see your headache here? If you are an allergy sufferer, you may be experiencing a sinus headache—seasonal allergies, animals, mold, dust—there is a long list of allergens that could be culprits. A trial run with an over-the-counter allergy medication and a saline nasal rinse could be very helpful. As always, consult a medical professional before starting any medications or if symptoms interfere with daily life or become more severe. Some headaches are unavoidable but it’s safe for all of us to repeat “serenity now” a few times every day, especially during stressful periods.

The Pediatric Dentist: Does Your Child Have One? By Jeff Laughlin, DDS MPH “They are just baby teeth!” This is a common statement that is often heard by the pediatric dentist at a child’s first dental visit. This simple belief implies that because those baby teeth will fall out, there is little care that needs to be devoted to them. Yet, it is well documented that a child with poor oral health is unable to eat and thrive, sleep uninterrupted, concentrate in school, and socialize without embarrassment. The mouth is considered a “mirror” to the rest of the body. In other words, a healthy mouth free of tooth decay, pain, and swelling, positively “reflects” a child’s overall health. However, 4.5 million U.S. toddlers and preschoolers (more than 25%) still experience tooth decay, which is five times more common than childhood asthma. It is important that your child visit a pediatric dentist, as early as age one. A dentist who specializes in children understands that kids are not just small adults. Each child is unique and requires an age-specific plan for prevention and treatment that may involve more advanced behavior management techniques, such as oral sedation or general anesthesia. Your child deserves a positive experience in a kid-friendly dental environment that is

comfortable and fun, allowing their trust with the pediatric dentist to be strengthened over time. It is no longer accepted that baby teeth are unimportant and a child does not need to be seen by a dentist until age 3. An infant with no cavities can quickly progress to a toddler with decayed teeth, causing dental pain and disability—a scenario that can be prevented. Establishing a “dental home” with a pediatric dentist is essential to a healthy mouth and teeth, which can have a tremendous and long-term effect on your child’s general health and well-being. Jeff Laughlin, DDS MPH, treats patients at these four Virginia Family Dentistry locations: Atlee, Irongate, Midlothian, West End. Virginia Family Dentistry is a group practice of more than 50 doctors specializing in Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Implants, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Cosmetic and General Dentistry. tastebudz with Steve Cook

We’ve been traveling all over Chesterfield and nearby destinations

looking for some great dining suggestions. So, let’s get started. There is much to share.

LET’S GET FRESH: I was over at The Boneyard Butcher and Seafood Shops (BoneyardButcher.com) located just off Hull near Winterpock Road at 12046 Southshore Pointe Drive, recently. I probably learned more about meats in the 10 minutes I spoke with owner Chris Taverner than I have in my entire life. The guy knows his meats. Chris tells me that he’s got something a little special for Thanksgiving this year. Who’s up for fresh (as in not frozen) turkey? Chris will be offering Black Spanish Turkeys, which will be delivered fresh and available for pickup the day before Thanksgiving. However, since there will be only a limited number of turkeys delivered, they’ll be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Order your turkey now to ensure that you’ll be enjoying a fresh bird this year. This is the season when family and friends get together for special dinners and The Boneyard will be stocked up for those occasions with such choice meats as standing ribs, tomahawk steaks and pork crown roasts. Or how about a tenderloin wrapped in bacon? Chris does say that for the pork roast, it’s best to give them a two-day notice. The Boneyard also offers cheese balls as well as shrimp and crab balls for your entertaining needs. 44 Chesterfield Living

OPEN YOUR PIE HOLE: Hey, did you know that there’s a new Pie Hole Pizza in Midlothian? It just opened in late October. This will be restaurateur Karen Verdisco’s second pizza shop. The first opened in Ashland last winter. Karen says the secret to the popularity of her Neapolitan-style pizzas is in the ingredients. “We only use top quality cured meats and cheeses,” she says. The dough just might qualify as another component to the Pie Hole’s success. “We make our own dough, in house,” Karen says. The pizzas are baked in a 900-degree brick oven. Everything except the salads (of course), including the wings, the Brussels sprouts and the meatballs are cooked in the oven. And since a good pizza deserves a good beer, Pie Hole Pizza offers 20 (mostly local craft) brews on tap. They have Prosecco on tap, too.

Friends, family & fun with great food and Craft Beer! FIRE SALE: If you want to heat things up with that special someone take her or him to Palermo Italian Restaurant (DineAtPalermo.com) in Westchester Commons and order the Parmigiano Reggiano. I’ve tried it and I can tell you that this is one delicious dish. It’s served tableside in a rather dramatic manner. The serving cart is wheeled to your table. The server starts with a wheel of the Parmesan cheese, adds cognac and voilà! The cognac is lit and as the cheese and the cognac melt together, pasta is stirred into the mix. It creates an amazing taste. That’s not all that’s hot at Palermo. Coowner Marianna Merki tells me that they’re introducing some interesting menu items for their new Sunday Brunch, which runs from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. each week. Brunch delicacies include ricotta pancakes, breakfast pizzas and the Palermo Eggs Benedict, which is made with polenta, spinach and eggs. The dish that I can’t wait to try is the Veal Milanese, topped with an arugula salad. Marianna also says the brunch will offer carafes and half-carafes of Bloody Marys, Mimosas and Bellinis.

PULLED PORK IN POWHATAN: Even if your daily travels don’t take you out into Powhatan County, here’s a great reason to set your GPS for 2470 Anderson Hwy. thing or two about the smoked treat. Phil’s been in the barbecue business for over eight years. About 15 months ago, he opened his own place. Next time you get a hankering for some good ol’ (eastern) North Carolina-style barbecue, head on out to Wildwood for some good eating. While the Carolina-style is the most popular, Phil also offers other delicious items, such as his mouth-watering sliced beef brisket. Or, how about some Saint Louis-style slow-smoked pork ribs? Of course, Wildwood Bar-B-Que offers all of your favorite sides. “They’re the traditional sides (such as baked beans, potato salad and macaroni and cheese),” Phil says, “but we put our own spin on them.” And, by the way, if you’re planning on getting a group together for a picnic or any kind of private function, let Phil and Wildwood Bar-B-Que provide all the fixins’ for your next event. He offers a full service barbecue buffet for parties of 50 or more. But if you’re watching the budget, Phil says the smart thing to do is let him prepare your food – for any size event – and he’ll get it ready for pickup at the time you say. No matter what event you may be planning, tell me, who doesn’t love some good barbecue? Wildwood Bar-B-Que is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Take a look at their menu and learn more at WildwoodBarbecue.com.

Bon Air Provisions is also doing their own kielbasa and now you can enjoy their house-cured tasso ham, which is a popular cuisine from southern Louisiana. It’s used in gumbo and jambalaya. Of course, there’s much more to this really cool little shop, including an excellent selection of wines, plus they have about 24 Virginia craft brews on tap.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST: If you’re a regular reader of our TasteBudz Online, you probably know that one of our favorite places to enjoy good food and great music (or vice versa) is at the County Seat Restaurant and Gathering Place (3883 Old Buckingham Road, Powhatan). Two of our most talented TasteBudz, Victor and Kathy Gottlieb never miss a performance by the Taters, which is one of my favorite local bands. However, the County Seat has a real blast from the past coming up on November 18. That’s when the Rhondels will be appearing. Originally, known as Bill Deal and the Rhondels, this Virginia Beach-based group has been entertaining lovers of beach and rock ’n roll for nearly half a century. But you better call for reservations now. This show is filling up quickly. Their number is 804-598-5000.

Share your dining experiences. We’d love to hear them. Also, if you have any restaurant news, let’s have it. Drop us a line to TasteBudz@RichmondNavigator.com

YOU NEVER SAUSAGE A PLACE: I saw that line on a South of the Border billboard 40 years ago and have been waiting for a chance to use it. My chance came when I spoke with Mel Johnson recently. Mel is the manager at Bon Air Provisions, located at 2624 Buford Road, just a door or two down from Joe’s Inn Restaurant. I knew that Bon Air Provisions had begun making their own sausages about a year ago, but I had no idea just what an amazing job they’re doing with their meats. Mel says they smoke and cure sausages and hams right in house. He says they’ve added some great new items such as a traditional D.C. HalfSmoke. Why fight the I95 traffic when you can hop over to Bon Air and enjoy this signature sausage dish made famous in a town that’s sometimes known for its abundance of pork. 46 Chesterfield Living

The chill weather of late fall and winter calls for beer drinking in a warmer environment, whether you’re back indoors or outside around a blazing firepit. This month’s Beer Budz makes it easy for you to do either, and to contemplate your beer-related holiday festivities. Capital Ale House

Richmond locations: Downtown, Innsbrook, Midlothian Capital Ale House’s “Brewery of the Month” celebrates the recent expansion into Virginia of West Coast favorites Ballast Point (November) and Stone (December). The Innsbrook location will have a special Steal-the-Glass event on Christmas Eve featuring Delerium Noel (the pink elephant with a Santa cap), while the Downtown’s Music Hall will have concerts for all tastes.

Bottleworks

3078 Stony Point Road This neighborhood wine and beer shop has tastings every Friday, and likely will have one on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. There are twelve rotating taps that you can have growlers filled from for your at-home consumption, at $7 and up for a 32-ounce growler, and $14 and up for a 64-ounce one. With over 300 wines and far more beer selections, wine-of-the-month discounts, and local foods, it’s certainly a shop to check out.

Sedona Taphouse

Richmond locations: Midlothian, Glen Allen Sedona Taphouse has just expanded into its second Richmond location, in Glen Allen. There’s a nice patio outside and an inviting interior

with a wall full of beer taps. They have a weekly craft beer tasting on Sundays, a weekly wine tasting on Wednesday, and every Monday there’s a charity steak fundraiser (supporting Housing Families First in November).

Buz and Ned’s

1119 N. Boulevard; 8205 W. Broad St. Beer Budz thinks that there is no better late fall combination than barbecue and a dark beer. Buz and Ned’s has both, and has recently increased its beer taps by half, to 36 taps. (Okay, one is a root beer tap, for the non-beer drinkers.) They are ready to serve you with their traditional barbecue menu, and would be happy to host your office holiday party in their private functions room or on their patio.

Extra Billy’s

1110 Alverser Drive; 5205 W. Broad St. It’s beer and barbecue at Extra Billy’s as well, where they make both at the Alverser Drive location. They’ve recently added more barbecue items to their menu, and their beer is available in growlers ($8.50 and up for 32 ounces, $15 and up for 64). The Citrawation IPA – formerly the Citra Ass Down – is a longtime Beer Budz favorite, and is available year-round, while the Ten Bell Robust Porter is great paired with the beer brisket.

Legend Brewing 321 W. 7th St.

A wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon is seated on Legend’s deck, enjoying one of the best views in the city. Legend has seasonal beers to go with the view: the just-released Ember Ale, a malty English ESB, and the Lebkuchen Ale to be released in early November, a Christmas ale with warm spice notes of brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. The recently renovated patio is now a pergola-covered beer garden on the 7th Street side.

Love the brew? Leave us your tasting notes for these beers, or any others you just have to share, on our facebook page: RichmondNavigator. November / December 2017

Small Town Virginia: Beautiful and Historic

Leesburg

O

by Whitney Kiatsuranon

ne thing I love about Richmond is that it sits in the center of so much of the state’s beauty and history. I can go two hours or so in any direction and be in some place that is completely different. That’s exactly what I did recently when I escaped the city. Once outside the concrete jungle we all know and love, I found myself out in the country, traveling north on U.S. Route 15. My destination: historic Leesburg in Loudoun County. U.S. 15 is very much the same route that settlers and visitors have traveled for thousands of years. The Colonists called it the “Carolina Road,” as its terminus was an Indian trading post along the VirginiaNorth Carolina border. Numerous springs along the route and relatively safe fords across major rivers and streams made it a favorite with both the early settlers as well as the Native Americans, who had lived, hunted and traded there long before the Europeans arrived. Some archaeologists point to evidence of prehistoric Native American sites in this area that date back several thousand years. 52 Chesterfield Living

RichmondNavigator.com

Not totally unlike those who had traveled the route centuries before me, I wanted to explore the many treasures that Leesburg has to offer. I had heard that its downtown shopping district was filled with unique wonders offered by local retailers and restaurateurs. I began my day, perhaps as would many a true “Loudouner,” by having breakfast at the Georgetown Café (21 South King St). Leesburg had originally been named George Town in honor of England’s King George, II. In 1858, when the town was selected as the county seat for the newly formed Loudoun County, the name was changed to Leesburg. Despite my intentions of ordering a hearthealthy meal, such as an egg white omelet with twelve-grain toast, I was seduced by the Farmer’s Omelet featuring cheddar cheese, bacon and mashed potatoes. My taste buds reached a pivotal climax at first bite. I also decided to try one of their “Eye Openers” off the menu, which, in this case, was a Bloody Mary made with the restaurant’s own mix. Both the cocktail and the omelet were delish.

Photo: Visit Loudoun

The Leesburg History Tour, operating from late spring through late summer, takes visitors by historic homes and buildings that span the town’s 200-year history — from 18th century log cabins to elegant Victorian mansions — and tells the stories of some of Loudoun’s most famous residents. by historic homes and buildings that span the town’s 200-year history — from 18th century log cabins to elegant Victorian mansions — and tells the stories of some of Loudoun’s most famous residents. When asked about recommendations for weekend visitors, Whiting said, “Loudoun is rich in B&Bs.” She recommended the Loudoun Bed & Breakfast Guild (LoudounBAndB.com) that offers more than two dozen venues from the banks of the Potomac to the slopes of the Blue Ridge. Whiting gave me one more idea for a final stop on my way home when she mentioned that LoudNovember / December 2017

oun County has more than 40 wineries. I asked around and the winery that was most recommended, based on my route back to Richmond, was Stone Tower (StoneTowerWinery.com). What a wonderful recommendation. Sitting on more than 306 acres atop Hogback Mountain, Stone Tower offers an exceptional tasting experience that is only exceeded by the exquisite beauty of its locale. Chalk this up as just one more reason that I’m longing to return to what may be one of the nation’s most beautiful and historic small towns — Leesburg, Virginia.

Photo: Steve Cook

After breakfast, I meandered along King Street, which is the main artery in this beautiful town nestled at the base of Catoctin Mountain. I ducked into the Very Virginia Shop (16 South King St.), and I must say if you’re looking for a gift for out-of-town friends or history enthusiasts, this charming little shop is worth a visit. I walked out with honey-kissed peanuts, Virginia Gentlemen barbecue sauce and a jar of local honey. I definitely plan on returning for more gifts. Next on my list was a neat little place called The Other Kind of Jewelry Store (14 South King St.). This quaint store offers rare, antique jewelry including, but not limited to, earrings, pendants, watches and rings. I fell in love with the Lapis Collection, but I had to leave it behind, perhaps for another visit. There is a plethora of tiny boutiques and specialty stores offering something for just about everyone — from home décor to high-end fashion, as well as numerous spas and salons. After spending the better part of the day visiting various and totally unique shops, it was time to try another restaurant. I perused the lunch menu at The Wine Kitchen (7 South King St.). I was intrigued by the website’s description of the place: “Seasonal American bistro menu takes advantage of the great variety of local and organic ingredients raised by farmers of the region.” Since I’d already eaten an unhealthy breakfast I decided I would make up for my gluttonous ways at lunch. Just kidding, I ordered the sweet tea-brined fried chicken. The dish was a recommendation from general manager Erich Bluefeld. “The brine is literally sweet tea,’’ he explained. “The chicken is soaked overnight in sweet tea and then deep fried in a buttermilk batter, served with mac and cheese in a cast iron skillet and seasonal greens.” I don’t eat a lot of chicken, but The Wine Kitchen changed my yard-birdhatin’ eating habits for life. After spending much of the day eating and shopping and eating, it was time to add a little culture to my visit, so I walked around the corner and into the Loudoun Museum (LoudounMuseum.org), located at 16 Loudoun St., SW. The museum offers more than 8,000 items, documenting the history of the town and the county. While there, I had the chance to speak with Elizabeth Whiting, president of the museum’s board of trustees. Whiting recommended that visitors to Leesburg take advantage of the many walking tours offered throughout the town as well as other towns within the county. The museum conducts The Leesburg History Tour from late spring through late summer. This tour takes visitors

Company’s Coming! Create a Cozy Guest Room Retreat by Angela Weight

Everyone knows that holidays and houseguests go together like turkey and gravy. Whether you’re hosting the in-laws or a group of tourists this holiday season, follow these tips to give your visitors a five-star soujourn. 56 Chesterfield Living

“There’s no denying the peacefulness of curling up in a comfy bed, surrounded by big, fluffy pillows

and tucked into cozy cotton covers. But, you can’t forget the little extras that make your guests truly feel at home.” – Polly Brooks, owner, The One Bed & Breakfast

If you’re like most of us, your guest room could probably use a little sprucing up. This can mean anything from sweeping away a few dust bunnies to clearing out the menagerie of stuff that’s been piled in there over the past decade. Slightly used treadmill, anyone? Once the room is clutter free (or at least the clutter is contained and out of sight), it’s time to focus on the single thing that can make or break an overnight stay. You guessed it! The bed. Many homeowners relegate their oldest, hardest mattress set to the spare bedroom. If you fall into this category and aren’t ready to invest in a new bed, add a high-quality mattress topper to transform that stone slab into a luxurious lair. Retailers like Bed, Bath and Beyond and TheCompanyStore.com have dozens to choose from. Want to treat your guests to an extra elegant night’s sleep? Order a set of 280-thread-count Pima Cotton Percale sheets from L.L. Bean. Business Insider named them the “best sheets you can buy for your bed.” Most people have a pillow preference of either firm or soft. And chances are good that you won’t think to ask your visitors ahead of time where they fall on the stuffing scale. With this in mind, be sure to provide plenty of pillows in a variety of firmness. Stock extra quilts and blankets for guests who need a few layers of warmth. Conversely, if the bedroom isn’t equipped with a ceiling fan, have a free-standing or table fan available for those who prefer a cooler climate.

“There’s no denying the peacefulness of curling up in a comfy bed, surrounded by big, fluffy pillows and tucked into cozy cotton covers,” says Polly Brooks, owner of The One Bed & Breakfast in Richmond. “But, you can’t forget the little extras that make your guests truly feel at home.” A bedside lamp is an absolute must because stumbling across a pitch-black room in search of the bathroom light switch is never a fun game. A waste basket and laundry hamper are also bedroom staples. Does your guest room have a full-length mirror? They’re relatively inexpensive and can be easily hung from a closet door. Since your visitors will almost certainly be asking for your WiFi network and password, be sure to have them readily available. Michelle Hickey, of EleganceandEnchantment.com, goes a step further and displays her home’s Wi-Fi information in a stylish framed print.

Visit her website to create your own framable “WiFi décor.” To truly make your guests feel special and make yourself look like an entertaining pro, place a couple of baskets on the bedroom dresser — one with drinks and snacks and the other with travel-sized toiletries. The weary traveler who forgot to pack toothpaste will be delighted to discover a complimentary tube or two. Wrap up your guest room preparations with a vase of fresh flowers on the nightstand or bureau. Nothing says “welcome to our home” more perfectly.

Providing toiletries, fresh sheets, blankets and towels, a basket of light snacks, easily accessible lighting and WiFi directions will help guests feel welcome in your home. November / December 2017

WINTERIZING YOUR HOME by Averill P. Byrd

W

ith cold weather sweeping into the region, it’s tempting to just kick back, turn up the heat and relax in the comfort of your home. But there’s not much relaxing to be done if you’re anticipating an outrageously high electric bill at the end of the month. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average American household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills, with nearly half of this going into heating and cooling costs. What if there was a better way? (There is.)

detectors working. These steps will save you the trouble of turning the temperature up too high or too low and can even help prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Clean your gutters. This is nobody’s favorite chore, but do not underestimate its importance: clean gutters facilitate the flow of water (i.e., melted ice and snow), preventing build up and water damage around roofs, ceilings and walls.

The answer is winterizing. That’s the process of preparing your home for winter. Below you’ll find tips, tools and methods to make your home more energy-efficient so you can enjoy warmth in the winter without squandering your retirement savings. As you break out the scarves and boots, keep in mind these basic measures to ensure maximum enjoyment of this glorious winter season.

Inspection, inspection, inspection. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As with your health, so with your home. There is no substitute for a proper HVAC inspection before the temperature drops. This includes making sure that your air and furnace filters are in good working order so systems work more efficiently, checking the exhaust on your fireplace (you don’t want smoke blowing into the living room), and keeping smoke and carbon monoxide

Seal and plug. Air duct temperatures can fluctuate with the weather, and duct leaks, especially around connections and joints, are common. These, along with air drafts around your doors, windows, attic, crawlspaces and garage, can make your house colder in the winter, and cause you to use more heat than necessary. Sealing and plugging them should be an easy enough DIY project—visit hardware or home stores to get weatherstripping, sealant, spray foam, draft blockers and similar items.

Use a gas fireplace.

Insulate. The Richmond area has a recommended insulation level of R-38, based on the climate, temperature and weather patterns, which many old houses don’t meet. For most of us, the first step in this direction is insulating the attic. Loose-fill insulation is a reliable and affordable fix. Remember to check other parts of your house as well, such as crawlspaces, ceilings and basements. Insulating pipes and ducts (after they have been sealed, of course) can lower utility costs by requiring less energy to heat up the water for that warm bubble bath you’ve been longing for. Visit the Department of Energy website (www.doe.gov) for tips and some serious technical information on insulation methods and related measures.

Use a programmable thermostat. You don’t need to run the A/C as hard when you’re away from home or while you sleep. Programming thermostat changes at certain fixed times—or even controlling the thermostat remotely from your phone— can help minimize your energy consumption.

There’s nothing so comforting as curling up with an oversized throw next to a crackling, flickering fire right in your living room. But not everyone has time to chop firewood, and you can lose as much as 85 percent of heat up the chimney with wood-burning fireplaces. Gas fireplaces, on the other hand, allow you to kindle a fire at the flip of a switch or the click of a remote control. They are also easier to maintain. New models are increasingly energy efficient and are fitted with carbon monoxide and oxygen level detectors to ensure safety.

Consider energy-efficient upgrades. Is it about time for an upgrade? Consider installing storm doors or windows to keep warm air in and cold air out. It’s also a good way to protect doors and windows from hail damage and the like. If you’re looking to replace your old dishwasher, refrigerator, TV, water heater or light bulbs, consider purchasing energy efficient products with the Energy Star badge. More information on these products is available online at www.energystar.gov. Follow these steps—and pull on a pair of fuzzy socks—and you can look forward to a warm and worry-free winter.

Yakety Yak U

by Jacqueline Murphy

nlike the back-talking subject of the 1958 Coasters’ song, yaks have a long history of dependable

domestic service. Native to the Himalayas,

yaks were domesticated over 4,000 years ago and have been used for wool, hides, milk, butter, meat and as pack animals. Ken and Lorie Zlotkowski, owners of Quartz Creek Farm in Powhatan, have been raising grass-fed, freerange yaks since 2002. 62 Chesterfield Living

Yak Chili

Recipe by Lorie Zlotkowski

1-pound ground yak meat 3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed 1 medium onion, chopped 2-3 tablespoons olive oil Two 16-ounce cans beans (whatever you like, kidney beans, black beans, chili beans) 1 large can tomatoes, drained (we use home canned, quart size) 3 ounces tomato paste 2-3 tablespoons chili powder 1 tablespoon cumin salt pepper cheddar cheese or Mexican blend cheese

“The omega-3 to omega-6 ratio is very good; much better than beef. It’s healthier,” explains Ken. “It’s what you find in salmon and other fish and helps keep cholesterol down,” In yaks, the fat is concentrated on the exterior of the animals to keep them warm. This makes the meat very lean. The fat in cows is distributed with the lean, resulting in streaks of fat or marbling. A naturally lowfat, dark red alternative to beef, some people find that yak meat tastes sweeter than equally lean cuts of venison or bison. “Also,” Ken says, “yak meat is juicier and more tender than bison.” So, why did the Zlotkowskis choose to raise yaks? “We had some land and wanted something that ate less than cattle, so we started doing research,’’ he says. “Yaks are easy to keep. They’re real homebodies; they like to stay home.” If you’re looking for a healthy alternative to a beef steak, Ken says, “Grilled yak steaks are the best. Roasts are good, too.” You can buy Quartz Creek Farm products at local farm markets or directly from the farm. Contact them at 804-598-7762. Find them online at Facebook quartzcreekfarmva and at bosgrunniens.blogspot.com

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the olive oil and onion. Sauté until golden. Add the ground yak meat and brown on medium heat. Add the garlic, beans and tomatoes. Bring to a simmer. Add chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper to taste. Add enough tomato paste until the chili is the thickness you like. Cook on low for 10 minutes or so, until flavors are blended. You can also add jalapeño peppers or red pepper flakes to add more heat. Top with cheddar or Mexican blend cheese.
