Welcome to the Cherry Hinton COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER

This edition brings the results of our survey from last year when we asked whether there was a place for the newsletter in Cherryhinton. We were pleased to find that it was wanted and there were many who welcomed a printed version.

On this occasion we have again decided to deliver a copy to every home and hope that you find something of interest - whether it's finding something new to engage in or just nice to know what's going on where you live.

We were keen to increase the number of pictures in this edition and to set you a challenge - on a loose theme of entrances we have ten pictures taken in Cherryhinton for you to identify. The lucky winner will receive a £10 book voucher.

Last month saw the first British Legion/Residents' Association Sunday Morning pop up cafe in the Library. (See page 6) As we read of libraries reducing their services or worse losing libraries altogeher we must think about how we can ensure we retain this important local amenity. If you have ideas for events in the library but would like some help getting something going the Residents' Association would be happy to help.

Cherry Hinton Residents Association AGM takes place at the Library Community Hub at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, 28 April. In addition to AGM business there will be a presentation on the High Street enhancements from the City Council’s head of Urban Design, Glen Richardson. Also invited is a representative from Lloyds Bank to discuss the proposed branch closure. There will also be an update on the timetable and progress in the CHRA’s plans to expand the Library incorporating a bigger Community Hub complete with café and other facilities. The latest architect plans will be on display. The Association would also welcome interest from people willing to stand for committee posts.

SEE PLANS FOR CHERRY HINTON HALL GROUNDS

FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDING CAFE, ROSE GARDENS AND NEW WC’S Work on stage 2 of the ‘Master Plan’ to improve Cherry Hinton Hall grounds is finally set to start later this year. The £400,000 allocated for improvements comes from so called ‘section 106’ local developer contributions. After a lengthy series of consultations and City Council approvals, amongst other things the grounds will shortly see brand new toilet facilities and a café, a new tarmac path near the Cherry Hinton Road entrance, restoration of the original parterre and rose gardens in front of the Hall and removal of the sequoias, various tree-thinning and the creation of a long grass and wildflower area in the southeast corner.

However, the first changes visitors will see are works to improve the watercourse.

The pond and brook originally formed part of a wonderful chalk stream (there are only about 400 in the world), fed from Giant’s Grave. Ideally, chalk streams are narrow and fast-flowing, allowing the unique wildlife habitats they support to flourish, and work to improve Cherry Hinton Brook in this way has already been undertaken downstream. Once this year’s Folk Festival is over a big project will start in order to dredge the pond (last undertaken in 1962) and enlarge the island (creating a new, boggy wildlife habitat), cut trees back, and re-create a fast-flowing watercourse through the main body of the pond. Native aquatic plants and reed-beds will appear, as will an in-line fish channel to allow fish to navigate past the weir once again.

The AGM will be held in Cherry Hinton Village Leisure Centre, Colville Road on Wednesday 20th July. The speaker will be Andrew Selwyn-Crome, The Victorian Ghost Hunter.

Friends of Cherry Hinton Hall Community Action Day on 2nd April when about 25 volunteers picked litter, planted wildflowers, cleaned the display boards, and cut down some overhanging branches and scrub.

FRIENDS OF CHERRY HINTON HALL PETS IN THE PARK EVENT The Friends of Cherry Hinton Hall are organising their annual event, Pets in the Park featuring The Turbo Trust Dog Show, on Saturday 18th June from 12 - 6pm. With an assortments of classes like the Best Veteran, Waggiest Tail ,Best Rescue and the Cutest Puppy to name but a few! Fun classes to test your pet on the Sausage Recall, Musical Sit and many more with demonstrations from the experts. Registration for classes at 12 noon. £2 per dog per class. All dogs must be on a lead at all times.

There will be a wide variety of stalls selling all kinds of crafts and goods plus a selection of animal charities and organisations will be there to tell you about their work. IT’S ALL CHANGE AT THE RED LION IN MILL END ROAD JOIN AMANDA AND SUE FOR ENTERTAINMENT AND HOMECOOKED FOOD If you haven’t visited the Red Lion in Cherry Hinton for a while, then there has never been a better time to do so.

Sisters Amanda and Sue took over management of the well established pub in November 2015 and have quickly stamped their mark. The interior has been smartened up and the lunchtime menu includes pub classics such as Beer Battered Haddock, Beef or Bean Chilli and Sausage and Mash and there is a Senior Citizens special on a Tuesday. However it is the home cooked Sunday Roast which really stands out with a choice of 4 meats for only £12.50 and so you don’t need to go into town for great food - it’s on your doorstep.

There are also some themed evening food nights coming up - 28th April - Steak Night 26th May - Indian Night, and 30th June Italian Night.

Saturday nights are music nights and the pub is very quickly establishing itself as an important venue in Cambridge with popular local bands playing a mix of Blues, Ska, Rock and lots more. The music starts at 8.30-9.00pm and you can enjoy a range of drinks including wine by the bottle from £9.95 and Guest Ales.

Mid Week Wednesday entertainment alternates between Quiz Nights and Bingo and younger guests can enjoy a bouncy castle and climbing frame and board games and giant jenga for rainy days.

THE CHERRY HINTON YARD SALE IS BACK

SATURDAY 25TH JUNE 11.00AM - 4.00PM - REGISTER YOUR INTEREST NOW Following the success of the 2014 event, in which over 30 residents joined in the village yard sale; we are offering the opportunity to set up shop once more. We are delighted to announce that Marshalls once again will support us with the printing of maps and signage and this year funds raised will go to Jimmy’s.

How does it work?

First, you can register your interest at cherryhintonvillage@gmail.com We will advertise the event and offer registration forms closer to the date on-line and at Cherry Hinton Library; there will also be posters and yellow and red balloons available to promote the event and your stall.

The registration forms will be collected and plotted on the map 10 days prior to the event and registrations will close.

Maps will then be available on-line and in the Cherry Hinton Library.

The day arrives and you sell your goods in your own front yard. What could be simpler?

No packing up your car at 6am to attend a local car boot, it’s all in the comfort of your own yard.

Why? Why not? We will collect donations of money and small essential items for Jimmy’s Night-shelter Cambridge. Items for donation: Shampoo, shower gel, brushes, combs, batteries, soup sachets, sleeping bags, antibacterial gel, sewing kits, plaster packs.

Why else?

It’s a community thing.

RESIDENT INTERVIEW

Born in Ely, Paul Holmes moved to Cherry Hinton in 1966 and has seen considerable change in his 50 years in the village.

Why did you move to Cherry Hinton?

I worked for BT and was transferred to work at Long Road. I spent the last 17 years of my career as a Union Organiser for BT. I was also a Cambridge Magistrate and spent 2 years as Chairman of the Cambridge Branch. Having always been a supporter of the Labour Party I am currently Chairman of the Cherry Hinton Branch How did working for BT lead to your role as Branch Secretary for Nat Fed of Occupational Pensioners?

I joined the Royal Mail and BT Pensioners when i retired and following the resignation of the Branch Secretary I was asked to take on the role.

There are currently 80,000 members 550 in Cambridge who enjoy social events and are given help and advice And your work with the British Legion?

I have been a member of the RBL for 25 yrs with 15 yrs on the committee and the last 3 yrs as Chair. We are currently working with CHRA towards a new RBL meeting room.

How do you relax?

I enjoy my allotment and have been secretary of the Blacklands Allotments for 15 yrs. These are behind Cherry Hinton Hall and are the only non city council allotments belonging to Peterhouse College.

Has Cherry Hinton changed?

When we first moved there was minimal developement but now it has become part of Cambridge. I think it still retains its identity as a village and has a nice community feel.

52 STORIES - FREE STORYTELLING ON SATURDAYS 10.30-11.15AM CHERRY HINTON LIBRARY Every Saturday at 10.30am at the Hub end of Cherry Hinton Library you will find children sitting on bean bags and rugs with their adults sitting on the comfy chairs round them listening to a story. We are now well into our second year and have a variety of readers including parents, families, grandparents, teachers and councillors all who have sat and read one or more stories to a very receptive audience. Barbara and Councillor Mark Ashton read regularly, Councillor Russ McPherson brought his bagpipes and The Mayor, Rob Dryden joined us to watch the film we have made. Our patron author, Rebecca Patterson has read as have illustrators Isabel Thomas and Caroline Rabei, one of our readers, Chris Armstrong read his own story and we celebrated World Book Day with a Japanese session led by Richard Buttrey.

799 children listened to stories during our first year. If you have not yet visited 52 Stories we hope you and your family will do so in the future. We are always looking for volunteers to continue with this community project. If you would like to volunteer to be a reader or help Mo Child and Annelies Saunders with a session, we’d love to hear from you as it needs quite a lot of commitment to make sure there is someone there every week! The Society tries to look at all aspects of our local history so we were very pleased to start the year with a talk by member Pam Butler on “Seed Testing, its history and links with Cambridge”. As someone who had worked in the Seed Testing Laboratories, most recently at NIAB, Pam was able to give us a very interesting talk. In February, Tamsin Wimhust, a Trustee, talked to us about the David Parr House in Gwydir Street. David Parr worked as an “artist painter” for the Cambridge-based decorative firm F.R. Leach and Sons who worked on various William Morris projects. Tamsin's enthusiasm for the project caught our imagination and we hope to visit the House in May. March brought a talk by Blue Badge Guide Nancy Gregory on “Scholars, Spectres and Surprises” which revealed lots of interesting facts about the colleges and a few scary tales!

The Society usually has at least 3 excursions during the week. We have already had a very enjoyable visit to the Mayor, Rob Dryden at the Guild Hall as a preparation for our May talk. Ron English is leading tours of Emmanuel and Jesus Colleges in April and also to Bury St. Edmunds in June.

LATEST NEWS FROM CHERRY HINTON LIONS

The 31st Cherry Hinton Festival returns in September. The Festival will be running from Saturday the 10th to Saturday 17th September with events catering for all ages and interests. Community groups in Cherry Hinton will be running events throughout the week in various local venues. New for 2016 is a comedy night at the Red Lion, an evening with the Cherry Hinton Community Choir and the Friday Friends Harvest Lunch. The programme will also include all your favourite events including the Festival Quiz Night hosted by the Friends of St Andrew's and the Turbo Trust Duck Race. Thanks to all the community groups who have offered events.

Saturday 17th September will see Festival Day return to the Recreation Ground.

Fingers crossed there will be the same fantastic weather as 2015! Planned entertainments include the children’s marquee with face painting, art and science activities. In the marquee you will also find the specially commissioned Plague and Pox in Cherry Hinton interactive story telling session with Cambridge Ghost Tours - family friendly and ever so slightly spooky! The community performance arena will have a great mix of dance, gymnastics and martial arts displays, plus new for 2016 is Jezo's magic show. The music stage will showcase talented local musicians relax and enjoy the music with some delicious street food. The Gamer’s Bus and the circus skills workshop will be back by popular demand. New for 2016 is the climbing wall - a challenge for all ages! And come and meet the owls and eagles from the Raptor Foundation. There will also be stalls and exhibits from community groups to browse. Admission to Festival Day is free and most of the entertainments are free (exceptions include the inflatables and refreshments) so come along with family and friends for a great day out.

The continued success of one of the largest football clubs in Cambridges h i r e continues thanks to the great support we have from our managers, players and parents.

Cherry Hinton Lions FC has now a total of 13 squads for the 2015-2016 season offering football from U7 – U16 which is fantastic – at the beginning of the season we welcomed three squads from Cambridge Comets who have done extremely well in their first season as ‘Lions.’

We are continuing to progress with our girls football on a Saturday morning and are now looking to secure the team into the league from the 2016/2017 season.

Moving forward we are continually looking to bring on new squads – therefore we are pleased to offer training for U5’s (reception), U6’s (school year 1) and U7’s (school year 2) under the guidance of Dave Bates, therefore anyone wishing to bring their youngster along please contact Dave direct – 07783 846174, With this in mind any parent / carer who would like to become involved in football should contact us.

Our thanks to Sandra Day for organising another amazing Christmas event and to Jim Varney once again in his role as Father Christmas. A number of local residents attended the free event which included a craft fair, santa’s grotto, BBQ, games and more, thanks also to Russ McPherson for being our MC for the day.

CHRA were very disapointed to hear that Lloyds Bank had decided to close the High Street Branch. We are currently arranging to meet with the Bank with a view to assisting Cherry Hinton customers with online banking help or advice on other forms of local banking. HIGH STREET IMPROVEMENTS SET FOR THIS YEAR The long awaitied for improvements to the High Street are finally due to start in the Summer of this year.

Phase 1 will see the removal of railings and signage and further consultations with residents set for the future, our thanks to the hard and continued work of our local councillors in this matter.

NEW PRIEST FOR ST ANDREWS WELCOME TO REV KARIN VOTH HARMAN The Bishop of Ely is pleased to announce the new priest in Charge for St Andrew’s Cherry Hinton will be Rev Karin Voth Harman.

Karin is currently Associate Priest in the Benefice of King’s Cliffe, Bulwick with Blatherwycke, Laxton, Collyweston and Easton on the Hill in the Diocese of Peterborough Come along to a Sunday Service – Parish Eucharist 10am with Sunday School or Children’s activities.

Friday 29th April The first Monthly Coffee Morning and Bookstall in the Church Centre to raise funds for the repairs needed to the roof and drainage of the church. Come, bring friends and enjoy a relaxed coffee or tea.

If you are free on a Tuesday from 2.30pm - 4.00pm why not drop into the Phoenix Club at St Andrew’s Church Centre (back of the church) Cherry Hinton . A Friendly and welcoming group for men and women over 60 for conversation, entertainment, knowledge and friendship. FRIENDS OF CHERRY HINTON ST ANDREWS 2016 PROGRAMME OUT NOW EVERYONE WELCOME

The Friends are a group of non-church goers and members of St. Andrew's congregation who raise money to maintain, repair, restore and preserve St. Andrew's Church, the Church Centre and Churchyard for the benefit of the present and future community of Cherry Hinton. We raise funds by subscription from our members and various fund-raising events.

Over the past few months the Friends have paid for work to increase the capacity of the Church Centre, the new Nave lights in the Church and have made a donation towards the repair of one of the clock faces on the tower.

Thanks to everyone who attended our first event of 2016 “Tea, Cakes with Andy Malcolm” an Afternoon of Fisherman's Tales and Sea shanties which was very entertaining, the cakes as usual were delicious and the event raised £170.

Future Events for 2016 Saturday April 23rd at 7.30pm . East Anglian Guitars will be returning to give a concert for us . It will be a varied programme covering a number of different musical styles so there should be something to please everyone. Tickets will cost £5, £4 for members, and £3 for under 16’s and will include light refreshments.

Saturday at July 2nd at 7pm. Cottenham Brass Band return to give us a concert for a summer's evening Friday 16th September at 7.30pm - Festival Quiz Vanessa and Simon Webster are already working out questions for our next quiz.

CHOIR, YOUTH GROUPS, QUEEN’S 90TH BBQ & MORE THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT CHERRY HINTON BAPTIST CHURCH

Community Choir: restarts on 13th April and term finishes with an open rehearsal on 29th June.

This term’s music includes Your Love Keeps Lifting me Higher, Falling Slowly, I wish I knew How it feels to be Free, Sound of Silence, 500 Miles, Hey Jude and Take me to Higher Ground.

The choir is open to anyone living in Cherry Hinton - there is no fee, no audition and no musical qualifications or singing expertise are required, just lots of enthusiasm for singing in a variety of genres such as pop, soul, gospel and musicals. Rehearsals are Wednesdays 8-9:30pm in the Baptist Church building at junction of Fishers’ Lane and the High Street.

Three Youth Groups are restarting for the summer term in the newly refurbished Family Centre on 14/15th April: One for School Years 4-6 meets on Fridays 6:30-7:45pm, One for School Years 7-9 meets on Fridays 7:45-9pm and one for School Years 10+ (run by Romsey Mill) meets on Thursday 4:30-6pm. See ch-bc.org.uk/youth for details. Activities include darts, pool, table tennis, Xbox, Wii, PS3, Tuck shop, board games, table football and five-a-side football.

Weekly groups for pre-school children (Messy Play) and senior citizens (Friday Friends) are restarting for the summer term on 12th and 15th April in the Family Centre. There are two rooms for hire in the Family Centre, each with access to the kitchen: the larger room for £10/hr and the smaller room for £6/hr. These have proved useful both for regular activities (such as tuition and dance rehearsals), and one off events (such as children’s parties), and there is an on-line enquiry system at ch-bc.org.uk/FC. The Baptist Church will be marking the Queen’s 90th Birthday with a Big Lunch BBQ on Sunday 12th June (or a nearby Sunday) on the grass on the corner of Fishers Lane and the High Street. Although it may transfer into the church building (as it did when we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012).

The 27th Annual Cherry Hinton Holiday Bible Club ““Xpedition Force”” will take place Monday 25th July to Friday 29th July (inclusive) at Colville School. At £10 per child for the week (or £5 if on income support) this represents fantastic value: all craft materials and refreshments are included including a BBQ for all the family on Thursday 28th July.

PRINCESS ROYAL TO OPEN NEW TRAINING CENTRE ST JOHN AMBULANCE AT THE NEW GOODMAN CENTRE, CHURCH END St John Ambulance is proud to announce that our new Training Centre in Church End is now in operation.

Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal will be officially opening the building later on in the year. The building will be given the name 'The Goodman Centre', named after Ann Goodman, who was long associated with St John in Cherry Hinton since 1949.

The Goodman Centre has been designed to the most modern standards and has three training rooms, offices, garage to accommodate three ambulances and a wonderful, comfortable atrium reception area.

Now that the Centre is open to Adult, Cadet and Marshall Badger Units, we would like to welcome all ages to come and learn first aid -- Help Save Lives -- and 'Be the Difference' in an emergency.

Campaign: Care for older people The CQC wants to hear from older people, If you are aged 60 or over and receiving care, or a friend or family member of someone who is, they want you to tell us about the care you’ve received, good or bad. "The inspectors can’t be everywhere at once and your information will help us decide when, where and what to inspect. By telling us about your experiences, you could stop poor care happening to someone else and their friends and families, to share their experiences of health and social care with us. " Research has shown that older people are less likely to complain about services and are less aware of the different ways they can share their views.
