Mayor gets the boot Flora Maboa-Boltman, Mayor of Govan Mbeki municipality has resigned. An extraordinary council meeting was called by the majority councillors as per the standing orders of council. “Flora chose to hand in her resignation instead of facing a motion of no confidence and to save face in a party that is increasingly falling apart” says Democratic Alliance Cllr Hein Badenhorst. It became very clear that the mayor was under instructions from within the ANC to resign or be removed through a vote of no confidence. A number of high ranking provincial ANC dignitaries attended the meeting. In her speech, Maboa-Boltman heaped praises on her party, her MMC’s as well as herself. “I’m standing here in front of you all with no regrets. This is where I learnt good practices” says Flora and continued to tell the council and members of the public “I think I have done what I could.” Flora also said that she loves Govan Mbeki and would still like to see the city become a model city and a city of excellence. Flora stated that the ANC has decided to redeploy her and that she has accepted the redeployment. “I believe that I have played a meaningful role in the quest of stabilising the municipality in some areas, it won’t be in all areas I understand that. But the meaningful contribution that I have done, I think I have done what I could,” says Flora, “I remember meeting with Eskom, we spoke and reached some agreement.” “People were crying about water and one took the initiative to speak to Rand Water and reached some agreement” Flora said, “I will continue as a disciplined cadre” Flora also thanked her staff for their support. “There are two people that I was with daily and I think you won’t throw them out, Municipal Manager, because they still have to continue as the organisation (ANC) did not redeploy them but they redeployed me.”Flora got very emotional and asked the MM, “are you going to throw them out? If so why?” Flora said that if they were thrown out they would not have bread on their table. The EFF and Sopromo immediately said that the process is unconstitutional

as the extraordinary council meeting is not in line with the standing orders. A heavy argument ensued with both the EFF and Sopromo accusing the speaker of misusing his powers. The speaker had Cllr Hlolweni heavy handedly removed from council. The EFF staged a walkout in protest to the extraordinary council meeting and the procedures. The Democratic Alliance also seized the chance to tell the ANC that they did a poor job of running this municipality. “Flora should have been acted against a long time ago” says councillor Hein Badenhorst, “under Flora’s leadership

this municipality has gone from bad to worse. This is the worst administration ever!” The DA objected to Cllr Ngxonono’s nomination as new Mayor. The DA stated that she was the worst MMC for Finance ever and that she was instrumental in creating this mess that the municipality finds itself in. The DA also said that the ANC is always redeploying their culprits, using DD Mabuza as an example as their leader Mmusi Maimane said, “Tsotsi no 1!” The DA staged a walkout in protest to proceedings of the day saying that this

is a gross misuse of power. They also protested the nomination of Thandi Ngxonono as mayor. “Only time will tell if this will bring more looting and bad management or it will actually improve the municipality” says Hein Badenhorst, “Flora had not once taken responsibility for the demise of Govan Mbeki Municipality. Under her rule, GMM’s shortfall in their management of the Eskom purchase/ payment account was approximately R40m. Rand Water money was used to pay Eskom and now we have water restriction.”

Woza 2019 (come 2019) is the clear message that the Democratic Alliance (DA) is bringing to the people. The DA Mpumalanga held their 7th Provincial congress at Graceland on Saturday the 3rd of March. A number of members of parliament attended the congress, including Ivan Meyer (Western Cape minister of finance), James Selfe (Chairperson of the DA’s Federal Council) and Mmusi Maimane, leader of the Democratic Alliance. The main arena was packed with delegates, dignitaries and observers, all wearing blue in DA tradition. The congress marked the end of an era as James Masango, Leader of the DA in Mpumalanga, was to step down as leader, paving the way for a new era as Jane Sithole becomes the first female leader of any political party in Mpumalanga. The congress was characterised by singing and dancing to the beats of political songs, “The time has come for Mmusi” being a very popular song. James Selfe said in his address to the congress “Both the EFF and the ANC have sold out to racial solidarity. Both are doing the cynically and for the short-term gain, now more than ever we have the opportunity and the duty to tell South Africans that only together will we solve the problems of this country.” In her address, Refiloe Ntsekhe, DA National Spoksperson, said “This province (Mpumalanga) will play a crucial role in achieving the objective of bringing about total change. When we talk about total change we talk about bringing the ANC below 50% nationally. Coalition governments can then be formed with people that understand that the people come first.” Rifiloe then went on to say “When we talk about total change we mean a total shift from liars and looters to a caring and corrupt free government.” “The Constitution is the fundamental pillar of the South African people and

should be subscribed to fully.” This message was echoed throughout the day by all speakers. “David Mabuza completely destroyed this province and enriched himself and his friends, Cyril Ramaposa believes that the poor must fund his larger than life cabinet,” says Refiloe, “Why must we have such a large cabinet at the expense of the people?” Total change means that the politicians should be servants of the people and not the other way around.” Mmusi Maimane did not mince words when he said “We have had a Jacob Zuma problem, but it is not just a Jacob Zuma problem. It is an ANC problem.” “Not only did we have rising stars from Mpumalanga we also had rising Tsotsis from Mpumalanga! Mashodu, Detsodsi, SKELMS! They call themselves DD,” says Mmusi “How do you as a premier spend millions of rands, buying coverage in the New Age and think that is not corruption?” “How do you manipulate matric results and hope they will improve because you haven’t taught the children, now you try and change the marks. When they stole money in the 2010 worldcup, we knew them and they were championed by DD Mabuza.”

Say Mmusi, “Tsotsi number one! DD Mabuza makes Jacob Zuma look like a nursery school teacher!” He went on to say “DD is tsotsi original! “What deal did DD Mabuza have with Cyril Ramaposa that DD Mabuza is today the deputy president?” asks Mmusi. One of the most important statements that Mmusi made is regarding farmers and expropriation of land without compensation. “If you are a farmer, and you are a white farmer, I want you to know that in the DA you will have security of tenure.” Said Mmusi “I want you to know that your job in this country of providing food for our people is important and I will fight and make sure that your right is as protected as every other citizen in this country. Otherwise we will have what Zimbabwe have today” Mmusi went on to say that the only reason the EFF is choosing Nelson Mandela Bay is because at the core of the EFF they can’t stand white people. They are fighting against Athol Trollip, not because of any failure, but because he is white. “They are a racist party”. James Masango gave an emotional farewell and thanked his colleagues for their support.

OUTA is coming During a meeting with concerned citizens late last year, Leon Haywood of the Secunda Rate Payers group, introduced the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) to everyone. The message was clear. The mismanagement of Govan Mbeki Municipality could no longer be tolerated. At the meeting OUTA explained what was needed for them to establish presence in GMM. OUTA also outlined the financial implications of taking institutions such as GMM to court. OUTA has started their local Branch rollout and identified GMM as one three initial branches. “We are now excited to share with you that OUTA has employed its Local Government manager and taking on additional staff, in preparation for the roll-out to three towns over the next month or so. “Secunda / Govan Mbeki Municipality will be part of our initial launch and we will have committed to meeting with you and the relevant community organizations/leadership within the next three weeks.” Says OUTA in their letter to Leon. “The establishment of an OUTA branch in Secunda will surely help to fight the

corruption and mismanagement in Govan Mbeki Municipality” Says Leon Haywood. O’Keeffe & Swartz Building 318 Oak Avenue, Randburg PO Box 2627, Northriding, 2162 +27 (87) 170 0639 • info@outa.co.za www.outa.co.za

Jaco “Ponzi” Jordaan refused bail Alleged fraudster, Jaco Leon Jordaan, was refused bail in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court during his formal bail application on Friday. It is alleged that Jaco swindled over 100 investors out of more than R100 mil through a Ponzi scheme. He promised mainly Secunda and Kriel residents that their investment will double. When payment was due and investors

didn’t receive the promised funds, they went to his office in Gauteng only to find that it closed down and phones are disconnected. “The first few months went well, but come November, the payments stopped and Jaco was nowhere to be found. I lost R800 000,” a victim, attending court for Jaco’s first appearance in Secunda, said last Tuesday. Jaco is/was the

owner of Access Properties in Heidelberg. His fraud stretches further than Mpumalanga and according to Brig. Leonard Hlati, SAPS Provincial Communication Officer, he is also expected to face similar operandi accusations in other provinces. Jaco was arrested on Monday, 26 February, and remained in custody for a formal bail application on Friday. He will remain in custody

and is expected to appear in Secunda Magistrate’s Court on 13 April. Lt. Gen Mondli Zuma, Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner, hailed the investigation team for the selflessness and sterling work they have done in bringing the suspect to book to account for his deeds. The investigation by the Commercial Crime Unit of the HAWKS continues.

Accidents claim lives! A pedestrian was hit by a Mahindra SUV around 17H45 Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the pedestrian was declared dead on the scene. Reports indicate that the pedestrian tried to cross the N17, near the Syferfontein turnoff, and misjudged the oncoming traffic.

Johno Walker called for justice in front of Secunda Magistrate’s Court during Jaco’s first appearance on 27 February.

An accident occurred early Saturday morning on the Graceland/ Emba rd when three vehicles collided. It appears as if a Toyota Yaris hit a Nissan bakkie from behind. The Yaris then hit an oncoming taxi. There were several injuries. One person was seriously injured and unfortunately passed away at the hospital, four with moderate injuries and several with minor injuries according to reports.

Vanaand voel ek net soos daardie oom by die biduur. Veral nadat ek deur my tuin geloop het hier by my huis op die Weskus.

Ongelooflik ernstig. Selfs sterker gedagtes daaroor is geopper. Dis verspot. Belaglik. Want in totaal is daar maksimum vyftig liter water per dag per persoon. Vir alles: stort, kos maak, toilet, wasgoed was, skottelgoed was.

Swembaddens is of halfpadvol en lyk soos ertjiesop, of heeltemal leeg. Onthou dat jou kinders emmertjies en grafies saambring as jy by my kom kuier. Dankie! Baie dankie.

EFF demands better healthcare EFF picketers took to the gates of Evander Hospital on Wednesday, 28 February. Protesting the healthcare standards of the hospital, the members of the EFF marched to the hospital, where they handed a memorandum to the hospital’s CEO, Mr Aphane. This memorandum pinpointed issues with the operations of the hospital, while also listing the demands of the protestors. Thabiso Mofokeng, EFF regional coordinator, said that the EFF has “declared that 2018 is the year of health services”. As such, their demands included hiring more doctors, and ceasing the mistreatment of patients. Mofokeng was also concerned about the lack

of specialising doctors such as gynaecologists, as well as the safety of patients who are discharged late at night without being provided with transport. “The standards of these hospitals are really not bearable at all,” he said. Evander Hospital was given seven working days to respond to the memorandum. Although seven working days have not yet passed, Mofokeng noted that the response seemed positive enough and that the hospital was willing to work with them. The EFF plans to extend this work throughout the region. “We started with Govan Mbeki but we’ll be visiting a lot of other hospitals in Gert Sibande”, Mofokeng said.

wonderwerke is so groot.

Pupil robbed, dragged by a car Secunda – A 15-year-old high school learner sustained injuries after being assaulted, dragged by a motor vehicle and robbed of his Huawei P10 lite phone. Ethan Venter walked to the shops on Sunday afternoon to buy himself a chocolate. Upon his return, however, three coloured men, allegedly in their 20’s and driving an Emerald Green VW Polo, slowed down, opened the doors and started assaulting him. “One of the occupants hit him on his head and forced him to the ground. They robbed him of his phone which was in his pocket,” his mom, Chantal, said. According to her, Ethan started fighting back and the fight led back to the car. They tried to force him into the car, but when they realized it was no use, they started driving off, with Ethan still clinging to the car. About 100m further Ethan let go and asked a man who was in his car at the side of the road to follow them. However, Ethan’s parents aren’t sure if this man knows where they live and they have no way of making contact with him. Ethan went home to call his parents, whereafter his dad took a car to try and locate the crooks and his mom took him to hospital. Ethan sustained injuries and scrape wounds to his back, elbow, tailbone, right knee and hip. His left knee sustained serious injuries and he is also full of bumps. According to Chantal, he has one wound that is too deep for stitches. A case was opened at Secunda SAPS on Sunday evening and is currently under investigation.

The three male suspects are apparently all skinny, in their 20’s and the driver of the VW has a goatee beard.

Crime snippets Thieves caught red-handed

Ethan sustained painful injuries when he was robbed of his cellphone by 3 coloured males.

Secunda/Trichardt: Several suspected thieves were caught redhanded while stealing household goods last Wednesday. A Secunda 911-assist member saw four suspects exiting a field onto the N17 with a curve TV and surround sound. The member followed them while calling for assistance on Zello. 5 Reasons not to miss the Kruik Night Market Secunda… A small but expansive town of industry. It can easily become monotonous and uneventful; and it is often said that there is not much to do that doesn’t involve eating and/or spending money. While that statement is fairly true, the Night Market offers an altogether differently packaged experience. If you fancy a fun evening out and the mall seems a little too much like a bustle, here’s why you should head to the market instead: 1. Quirky Businesses – Finding items and services that aren’t common in mainstream retail outlets is, for our consumer culture, quite exciting. The Night Market is a place to find handmade jewellery, unique clothing and natural cosmetics. 2. Contributing to Growth – On the topic of quirky businesses, it would be tactless to leave out the fact that in supporting small businesses, visitors of the night market are making important contributions to the livelihoods of individuals, as well as the local economy, as these businesses stimulate economic growth by employing those who aren’t employable by larger corporations. 3. Live Entertainment – The most recent market featured the voice of the immensely talented PJ Pretorius. If

you want to feel like you’re at a festival without shredding your pockets for a pricey ticket, then the enchanting effect of combining good food, live music and outdoorsy charm awaits you at the night market. 4. Homemade delicacies – Since its been established that a large part of entertainment and socialising in Secunda involves eating, you’ll be happy to be greeted by enticing aromas when you arrive at the market. Like any other market, most foods are prepared before your eyes, or freshly pre-made in the kitchens of those who serve them. Either way, its difficult to leave without having sampled a few treats. 5. Breathing space – Secunda is relatively small, which means that the few social spaces we have are mostly indoors and tend to fill up easily. The friendly, outdoors setting at the market means that you can be social and browse at a leisurely pace, without it being overwhelmingly busy and driven by anxiety. There are many reasons why one might attend the Kruik Night Market, and in one way or another, it is worth it. So if you’re in need of a relaxed outing to kick off your weekend, this might just be it.

“Let’s get some men together and inform them about cancer” This were the words of Dieter Uken to the Bulletin at one of the several cancer awareness mornings held during last year. That saw the birth of a men’s breakfast at Lake Umuzi. It was held in the tent at Boesies last week. During the planning of the event, the advert design was discussed and it was decided to play a bit with words. The “men’s only with entertainment” advert was born. According to Martie Zerwick, our ticket co-ordinator, a number of people thought there might be more into the entertainment than meets the eye, all to the delight of everyone involved. Wednesday saw an early start to the event with Dr Dieter van Schalkwyk, Urologist, as the guest speaker. Dieter had some very interesting facts about men’s health that was shared with the men present. It became very clear that a lot of illnesses that men suffer from does not have clear symptoms and early detection is paramount in treating these illnesses. An interesting fact about colon cancer is that there is normally no symptoms leading up to the discovery and diagnoses of colon cancer. The colon does not normally give a lot of problems. A colonoscopy can

fortunately help with detection and also prevention of colon problems. The guidelines are that if you reach 50, you should have a colonoscopy and every ten years thereafter. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the 6th leading cause of death. Most men die with prostate cancer but not as a result thereof. The earlier the better. Erectile dysfunction is one of the few clear indicators for something else. “Erectile dysfunction is the canary for a heart attack within three years” says Dieter. Drinking pills to treat the dysfunction is not enough. Men have to check their cardio vascular functions as well. Diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure increases the risks for heart problems and one should be screened for it on a regular basis. There were a lot of interesting questions that were asked and the main theme was the earlier the better for detection. Entertainment was provided by Billy Brand and he said to the Bulletin that he has never been for a proper examination. “This morning, my eyes were opened” said Billy, “I will have to go for an examination.” The men’s breakfasts will continue with another one planned for later in

the year. Requests have been made to bring this to the older school children and plans will be put in place for that. Tracey van Wyk of the ATKV donated some books that were handed out randomly to some of the men. A blue ribbon was also handed to everyone. This is to remind everybody of men’s health. It should be used as a conversation peace to tell other men about men’s health problems. This breakfast was also dedicated to Dieter Uken in recognition for his personal fight with cancer as well as his contribution to the people of Secunda as a whole.

VUT take action

Students of Vaal University of Technology’s Secunda campus took matters into their own hands on 1 March 2018. Expressing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the school, members of the EFF Student Command arranged protest action, during which classes were suspended. Protests resumed on Monday, 5 March. Andile Ndlovu, the leader of the movement, said that activities of the school could not continue while some students were suffering. “Die one, die all,” he said. Some of the complaints of the students include the fact that, while they are paying fees to the institution, there is a shortage of lecturers, which means they are often not being taught. Protestors also allege that management of the school has failed to provide transport

for students, which poses a safety concern since some classes end as late as 8pm. Students are also unable to have late night study sessions in conducive environments, as the library on campus closes early (6pm). Lastly, there are complaints regarding the lack of designated student accommodation, which leaves students staying in houses all over Secunda, regardless of how inconvenient this can be for a student. The protests have divided students into two camps: those who believe that this is a necessary course of action, and those who feel that timeconsuming activities such as these can only set them back further, especially academically. VUT management was unreachable for comment.

Secunda – still going green Going Green Secunda hosted a dropoff point for recyclables at the Duck Pond on Saturday. The recycle fundi’s parked a trailer for most of the day where residents could drop off their pre-sorted recyclables as they were not able to collect on Saturday. “We have been very quiet recently as we are trying to sort out our logistics. I will not, however, give up and we will succeed,” Kheya Samuels, founder of Going Green Secunda, said. “It is hard to say how many people came to drop off, as even people who spent the day at the dam contributed, but it was an amazing turnout and we collected that whole trailer and some,” Kheya said. Going Green Secunda will not be hosting a clean-up day this month as they decided to rather have the drop off point available every

weekend during March. “We want to give people the opportunity to get rid of their heaped up stuff,” Kheya said. During the month of April, there will be a trailer for recycling every second weekend and a clean-up day will be hosted on one of the alternate weekends. Gather your refuse, sort it and save yourself the dumping site horrors while saving the world, a plastic bottle at a time. What can be recycled? • Plastic bags, clear and colored • Cling wrap • Milk bottles • Plastic cold drink bottles and cap • Boxes • Magazines • White paper • Newspaper • Glass bottles and jars • Tins and cans
