Power on - for now
The first salvo was fired in the electricity supply war when Eskom issued a notice to Govan Mbeki Municipality regarding intended interruptions in the supply of electricity to the municipality. GMM retaliated with their own cannons and obtained an interdict against Eskom. Only time will tell who will be the
ultimate victor. And all that the real victims can do is sit with bated breath and wait. Wait to see what the outcome would be between two different views. The big issue will remain, GMM owes Eskom a large sum of money. Eskom imposes heavy fines for late payments that runs into millions of Rands every quarter that aggravates
the repayment plan. The penalties are levied even though a repayment plan is in place. Interest is also charged on arrear amounts. It seems that this situation is part of the court application but it could not be confirmed, although mention of GMM’s disapproval of the charges have been made in council on a number of occasions.
It is a clear fact that GMM will have to pay Eskom a large sum of money somewhere in the future, and most probably the near future. The question is, what then? Even if all the penalties and interests were deducted, it would still be a very large debt. Continued to page 5
