Court drops case against three The case against the three employees at the licensing offices was withdrawn by the court due to a lack of information. According to Capt S’fiso Nyakane of the Hawks, the court can place the case back on the roll again at any time. The three employees, Annelie Thompson, Thulile Nkonde and Ezekiel Mofokwane were arrested in October last year.
Annelie, a senior clerk, and Thulile, an examiner, were arrested on charges of fraud and corruption and Mofokwane was arrested on charges of being in possession of stolen property (license forms). The arrests were part of a multiprovincial investigation into fraud and corruption at different traffic departments. Residents have noticed since the
arrests that some of these employees are now back at work. According to MG Vuma, Senior Manager: Transport Administration and Licensing at the Provincial Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, a person is not guilty until proven guilty and thus these employees are allowed to continue working. He also said the arrests took place
while the licensing office was still part of Govan Mbeki Municipality. The Department has taken over the licensing offices. “The employees were there when we took over the Department so we cannot conduct an investigation because the licensing office then still belonged to Govan Mbeki Municipality when these employees were arrested,” said MG.
Local artist reaches top 100 Local artist Louis Trichardt recently entered the prestigious Sanlam Portrait Awards 2017 and finished among the top 100 artists. The bi-annual award was hosted by Rust en Vrede Gallery this year and the theme was Portraiture. The Sanlam Portrait Awards are generally seen as the most prestigious Portrait Awards in the country, and is the only one of its kind. There is only one winner and everyone competes for the single prize of R100 000. A total of 1 430 entries were received from all corners of South Africa. Louis’ entry is currently on exhibition at the Michaelis Galleries at the University of Cape Town as part of the Sanlam Portrait Awards 2017 Portrait 100 exhibition. To make this achievement more remarkable is the fact that this was the first time that Louis has entered. The top 100 portraits are then subjected to another round of judging to select the final 40 from which the winner is chosen. Louis’ portrait titled Jacky, where are you? portrays the face of a woman staring into the yonder that leaves the viewer with the question: ‘What is she thinking?’ The portrait was painted in oil on a canvas panel and took four months to complete. A limited pallet of four colours was used. The model did not pose but rather a candid shot by Louis, in pleasing light, was used. This resulted in a natural clean pleasing portrait that
is characteristic of Louis’ work. “It is pleasing to know that Secunda’s art community, and Louis in particular, can compete with the rest of South Africa,” said Elmarie, owner of Mopani Photography and Framing. The Bulletin acquired one of Louis’ smaller works and framed it at Mopani Photography and Framing. One lucky reader can win this prize by answering the following question: Where is The Bulletin situated? SMS your answer and contact details to 33282. An SMS costs R1.50. Choose between 1. Lake Panic 2. Lake Umuzi 3. Lake Knysna. View the photo of the painting to be won on our website. Closing date for this competition is Monday, 4 September 2017 at 12:00.
