Local Hawks Honoured The Hawks held the HAWKS National prestige awards on Friday evening. During the awards evening, the local Hawks “Project 24” team leader Warrant Officer Ras and his team were crowned with the title as best drug project for 2017. This accolade is for the best project in South Africa. This is a very prestigious award and Govan Mbeki and Mpumalanga can be very proud to have this team based in Secunda. For years, drug trafficking has steadily increased but the Hawks have cracked one of the biggest drug rings with their project 24. Drug addiction awareness campaigns will be intensified next year. Please keep reading the Bulletin for news in this regard. Project 24 reached its finale on Wednesday 5 April when after 14 months of intense investigations, dedicated detective work paid off. During this time members of the Hawks received death threats but perseverance triumphed . six drug manufacturers and dealers were sentenced to prison. “Unconventional methods were used to gather information while investigating the syndicate” said Capt Lucy Sekgotodi, provincial spokesperson for the Hawks The clamp down came on 18 and 19 August last year during which the
Hawks arrested five Nigerians and a South African, and confiscated five vehicles that had been used in drug transactions. Another Nigerian citizen was arrested later. “We are clamping down on drugs and all other serious crimes and criminals must be warned that we will send them to jail for a very long time”, said Major General Mokwena, Provincial head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga. Two syndicate members who gave the cops the slip on 19 August are still at large. Hawks are still searching for Emmanuel Omyekanna (nicknamed 50c), and Chukwuemeka Kingsley Ezenwa (nicknamed Alex). During the investigation and subsequent arrest, suspects phoned the investigating officers and threatened them and their families.
