WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Candidates and Parents Before I touch upon my college SLCS, I wish to reveal to you the past that prompted me to promote SLCS.

I was a Honorary Secretary of a reputed college in Madurai that was established long back and that college has produced many great scholars. No doubt that studious boys and girls shine wherever they are and whatever be the course they have studied. For them graduation is only a stepping stone. Once they graduate, they grow because of their knowledge, wisdom, skill and dedication.

But this is not the case with all the students. Many students after graduation are not able to get employment because they have studied only conventional courses and they wander in the streets without jobs. Often they are without any clue to identify an employer who can give them a job. I strongly believe that such students are only forced to become terrorists or anti-social elements.

A close look at the students of that college and a study of the courses offered by them prompted me to start SLCS with the motto “Learning for Better Living”. According to me any degree programme that will not help the students to make them employable is of no use to the Society.

With this idea in my mind, I started SLCS with the course “Hotel Management and Catering Science”. Since then SLCS has been introducing “job oriented courses” like Animation, Film Production, to make the students “employable”.

I can proudly say that many of our students who have successfully graduated from SLCS are well employed across the world. I am a frequent traveler and travel across the globe in connection with my bread and butter, the daily Tamil newspaper “Dinamalar”. During such travels I meet many of our past students who have vouched for the good quality education and hands on training given to them during their college days. They are well settled in their life and lead a quality life, at least owning a house.

It is my wish that all my current as well as future students of SLCS also march ahead to lead quality life by getting employed as early as possible, during graduation or immediately after graduation. My team will strive to get employment even to the average student.

We can take a horse to the pond. But the horse has to drink water. Similarly my team will train the students and continuously strive to make them employable. But each student must play his/her part right. They must be disciplined students in the college and use every opportunity to learn.

Success will follow and some may even earn while learning.

Graduate Study at SLCS

The SLCS Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science is an Autonomous and Self-Financing college affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. The college was started to serve the student community from the year 1994. We feel proud in declaring that this is the youngest self-financing college to receive autonomy and within 21 years NAAC peer team has visited the college thrice and the college has been re-accredited.

The college is also certified with ISO 9001 : 2008. With the autonomy SLCS has framed its own new courses of studies and adopted innovative methods, to make our students meet the current industrial requirements and mainly to become more ‘Employable’. SLCS provides the necessary elements to ensure access to education for the students through excellent state of art infrastructure facilities.

Net Lab At SLCS, students are provided with sufficient and modern lab facilities to obtain training. A dedicated Internet lab with 8 MBPS high-speed Fiber optic connectivity is offered. It lies usable for the students to navigate and update valuable information. Every student uses individual systems in one and one basis at the time of accessing.

Library The digitalized central library which functions from 8am to 7pm, houses thousands of CDs, reference and text books on heterogeneous topics in a spaciously organized room made available for the students. It also possesses hundreds of national and international journals and magazines. Thousands of e-resources such as e-books, e-journals are available through online inside the campus. Library services are fully computerized by the Library Informative Management System.

Transport Facility The college operates buses for the day scholars for their safe travel to the college and back home. The college buses are operated across Madurai city from different points.

Hostels Separate hostel facility for both boys and girls, built inside the campus in a serene and conducive ambience enables the hostellers to concentrate in their academics and other Co-Curricular activities. Well furnished double occupancy rooms for girls and single occupancy rooms for boys with Wi-Fi internet connectivity are provided for the comfortable stay of boys and girls. The students are served with nutritious, hygienic and pure vegetarian food which is prepared in the hightech sophisticated modern kitchen with automated production machines to keep the students hale and healthy.

Parents Teachers Association (PTA) The aim of PTA is to foster better relationship between the parents and the teachers. The teachers identify the academic level of the students from their performances through the continuous assessment tests. During PTA meetings, the parents are informed about the

student’s progress and problems. The PTA meeting is conducted at the end of every semester.

From the academic year 2016-17 onwards marks and leave particulars will be sent to the parents by SMS. NSS/YRC/RRC The college encourages the students to participate in all the NSS/YRC/RRC programs. The main aim of the program is to focus on the personality development of youth through the community service.

The students involve themselves in the major activities like blood donation, AIDS awareness, disaster management, road safety, child labor, literacy awareness to prove their social responsibility through seminars and workshops.

Alumni Meet Every year SLCS hosts the Alumni Meet.

During the Alumni Meet, Alumni share their experiences with the current students to create an awareness of the corporate culture. The main focus of the Alumni Meet is to have a good relationship between the alumni and the current

students for their better future. The Alumni Meet helps the current students for their better placements also.

Health Care/Insurance The college provides 24 hrs ambulance services inside the campus for the students.

The doctor visits the college twice a week for providing professional health care services to students.

The college has implemented a group insurance scheme with the category ‘A’ hospitals for all the students till the completion of the course. If any student meets with an accident or hospitalized due to sickness, he/she can claim upto ` 1,00,000 per year. This claim is not applicable for the outpatient treatment. In case of sudden demise of the sole earning person of a student family, he/she will be compensated upto ` 2,00,000 for their education at the time of the course.

Campus Recruitment Training (CRT) Campus Recruitment Training programme is conducted as part of the curriculum for II and III year students to make them employable. Through this CRT program the students are trained in Group Discussion, Mock Interview, English

Communication Skills, Presentation Skills practically and theoretically on a continuous basis.

Value Added Courses Value added courses are given as part of the curriculum to all the students.

Each department conducts certification programs so that every student completes the course with International Certificates to become more employable. These certification courses build the students confidence level to meet the competitive world.

Canteen The college affords a spacious canteen inside the college which serves delicious, hygienic food, beverages and bakery items.

The students and the visitors can utilize the canteen facility. The canteen caters from the breakfast till dinner.

Auditorium A fully air conditioned auditorium with a preview theater is available in the campus with 400 seating capacity which is inbuilt with the latest DTS. Skill Development Program Swimming As swimming is one of the life saving skills, we at SLCS believe all our students must equip themselves with this skill.

SLCS has a Semi-Olympic size swimming pool with certified separate trainers for boys and girls.

Driving A driving school inside the campus trains the students with proper driving skills through theory and practical classes, simulation and ample hands-on training.

Students KIOSK A computer terminal is available for the students to view their attendance, fee details, exam time table and results through the students KIOSK by flashing their ID cards. This student friendly facility is the first of its kind in Madurai, provided

by SLCS.

Counseling Cell A Counseling centre is inside the college for the benefits of the students. Personal counseling is given to the students by the well experienced faculty through the cell.

In addition, the cell prepares the students to be able to execute the work to be assigned by the corporate efficiently and smoothly in future. Career guidance is also provided to the students.

Community Radio Shyamalavani Community Radio 90.4, a unit of SLCS seeks to empower the village community by bringing about an awareness of improvement in the environs, foster a sense of brotherhood and encourage the use of modern technology for progress.

SLCS students involve themselves to give female and child-oriented programmes which have created awareness amongst the villagers. The other programmes by our students are debates, quiz and programmes on special occasions.

Education Loan Partner CANARA BANK, a leading Public Sector Bank and among the top five, came forward to sign the MOU for providing educational loan to the students of Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science (SLCS), RL Institute of Management Studies (RLIMS).

Visiting the college Madurai is the second biggest city in Tamilnadu next to Chennai (Capital of Tamilnadu). Madurai City is well connected with all over India by road, by rail and by air. SLCS is situated in Madurai-Arupukkottai road and it is just 17 km away from Madurai Junction. It is located in the Arupukottai four way road.

THE department of Marine Catering & Hotel Management Hospitality Industry: Hospitality industry is one of the world’s largest generators of wealth with highest employability prospects throughout the world.

THE department of COMMERCE The Department of Commerce was established in the year 2008. It offers B.Com (Banking and Insurance), a three year undergraduate course in the area of Commerce affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. The main aim of the course is to create trained professionals who are able to handle various financial activities associated with banking and insurance sectors.

Banking Industry: If we feel that the Indian economy must move on the right path of progress, if we realize that the Indian consumers are now more conscious, a radical change in banking is vital. Banks are not only the store house of countries’ wealth but also reservoir of resources necessary for economic development. They play an important role in the economic development of the country.

In India there are 222 banks functioning in a category of nationalized banks, old private sector banks, new private sector banks and foreign banks with numerous branches across the country. During 2014-15 more than 65% of the bank employees have retired. In 5 years due to retirement and expansion around 7,50,000 job opportunities in bank will come into existence. The starting salary offered by private banks is a minimum of ` 25000 per month.

BBA - Logistics and Shipping Management* 3-Yr Full-Time Degree Programme Course Highlights LOGISTICS is moving goods to RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME and the Act of supervising the far-reaching activities is known as Logistics Management.

All candidates should produce +2 mark statement or Degree certificate, Transfer certificate and a Conduct certificate from the Head of the institution last studied, for admission.

• No student will be permitted to attend the college by riding two wheelers.

• All day scholars should use the College bus, wherever the bus is operated, for attending the college.

II. Fee

• Course Fee: Course Fee fixed by the college should be paid at the time of admission and subsequently as per Fee schedule by way of Demand Draft in favour of Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science payable at Madurai / NEFT / Online Transfer.

• Due Dates: For Semester Courses, the Semester/Installment fee will have to be paid before the due dates.

III. Admission Scholarship

50% in the Academic Fee for 80 % and above in HSC Exam (or)

25% in the Academic Fee for 70% - 79% in HSC Exam will be given as an Admission Scholarship to the students for the first semester only.

V. Dress Code

“Dress maketh a man”. There is a prescribed dress code for boys and girls for all UG and PG students.

Students are provided with 3 uniform sets and shoes. Students should wear the uniform on all working days. Students who do not wear prescribed dress will not be permitted to enter the college campus.

VI. Identity Card

Every student should possess an identity card issued by the college which should be worn by the student inside the college premises and while travelling in the college buses. It should be produced whenever asked for, especially when dealing with the office, library, canteen and security gate.

VII. Ragging

According to Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act No.7 of 1997, ragging is a criminal offence and is strictly prohibited. Besides taking severe disciplinary and legal action against the offenders, they will be summarily expelled from the college.

Prohibition of Ragging: - Any person who contravenes section (2); Ragging within or without any educational institution is prohibited.

It is therefore in the interest of the student community and in his/her own interest that he/she scrupulously avoids indulging in ragging as the penalties can be quite severe.
