OVERVIEW Chengetai is a group of young individuals motivated to help girls in Zimbabwe who struggle to obtain sanitary wear. Chengetai’s motto is “Chirere mangwana chigozokurerawo”, which loosely translated, is to “nurture a child today, tomorrow she will nurture a nation”. We seek to provide ease of access to sanitary wear to Zimbabwean girls and women who are unable to have a smooth-sail during ‘that time of the month.’

This problem impacts the girls in various spheres of their lives including and not limited to continuous education, available sanitary facilities, freedom of movement and lack of confidence.

BACKGROUND Due to the unstable economic situation in Zimbabwe, the average Zimbabwean girl is unable to have ready access to sanitary wear.

This has resulted in approximately 72% of these girls not having access to pads, according to the SNV Netherlands Development Organisation. This results in the use of rags, cow dung or grass and leaves during their menstrual cycle.

The average pack of disposable pads has risen to approximately $3-$7 for a pack of 10. With each girl needing approximately 4 packets every month, this tallies to US$12 -$28. With an average Zimbabwean family earning a mean monthly income of US$300, where there are multiple women in one family, this could easily amount to $90-$100 per month. In comparison, a pack of reusable pads of approximately 5 pads costing $5 with each lasting 8 – 18 months. (1)

ADVOCACY Advocacy Campaigns have been executed over the years in the hope of enticing the government to lower the prices of sanitary wear.

Advocacy efforts were made towards making the Government provide free pads for an inherent cause that women have no control over . In November 2018, the Ministry of Finance announced a lifting of duty on sanitary wear in which received a positive reception from the Zimbabwean community as most women rely on imported pads for better quality and a lower cost.

A lack of an effective and hygienic padding for girls has stolen from these girls; their self-esteem, confidence, education, to mention but a few which in turn has a ripple effect in long run in Zimbabwe’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The idea is then to avoid the latter by reducing the number of girls that cannot get sanitary wear by all means possible.

HEALTH RISKS Myriads of health complications resulting from poor sanitary practice include urinary tract infections, rashes and vaginal infections only to name a few. More complex complications include cervical cancer.

PROJECT SCOPE Most of the women and girls that have been affected by this scourge reside in the indigent and most vulnerable places in Zimbabwe such as the rural areas and high-density areas where there is inadequate water supply, sanitation and refuse collection among others. Dealing with the access and availability of sanitary wear will alleviate the burden exerted upon women by the both the economic and environmental impediments faced in their respective communities. Access to sanitary wear will be provided at schools, children homes and clinics. The goal is to reach girls in vulnerable areas with provision and education on making and using their own reusable pads. The proposed places to be catered for in this regard by Chengetai include the following: High Schools; Local Communities High Density Areas

CHENGETAI MISSION: “TO ADVOCATE FOR ACCESSIBILITY AND AFFORDABILITY OF SANITARY WEAR FOR YOUNG GIRLS IN ZIMBABWE.” STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES Raise awareness about the shortage of sanitary wear in Zimbabwe Educate the public about the health risks associated with poor MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT Educate the public about the cost of effective use of reusable menstrual wear; Teach young girls how to make handmade sanitary wear.

PROJECT FUNDING SUMMARY The main goal is to outsource funding mainly from fundraising events, in which all of the proceeds will be used to cover all the costs needed to purchase the materials needed to hand-sew the sanitary pads MALAK EL HALABI

MEET THE CHENGETAI TEAM Ratidzo Mutangadura Is a 4th year Medical Student at the University of Malawi. Her passions lie in empowering the girl child through encouraging them to embrace their femininity and finding their voice through it. She says “womanhood is a concept that is newly encouraged and celebrated and there’s no better time to discuss and normalise these conversations than now.”

In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and getting a good workout in!

Tinashe Chikava Is a final year Financial Management honours student at the University of Pretoria. He is an aspiring Chartered Accountant and is driven by the passion to change the community around him. His main motivation for part of Chengetai is to spark a change in regards to how men have distanced themselves from womens’ natural phenomenon of periods and how a lot of men have stigmatised the issue. His goal is that one day, all men can view female menstruation without any bias and have an understanding of how the lack of sanitary wear is a threat to our society.

MEET THE CHENGETAI TEAM Tafadzwa Saburi She is currently a final year student at the University of East Anglia studying Accounting and Finance. She is passionate about female empowerment and creating opportunities for women to be financially independent. A believer in women emancipation which is catalysed by educating the girl child. Therefore, the Chengetai initiative is important in ensuring that no school days are missed because of menstruation.

A foodie who enjoys both eating and cooking.

Kudzaishe Mtasa Kudzai Mtasa is final year Business Studies (Hons) student at Bournemouth University and is currently undertaking a 1-year placement with Execucare Ltd in the United Kingdom as part of his program studies. Kudzai is passionate about business with a keen interest in specializing in the field of human resources. During his spare time Kudzai enjoys watching sports especially football, tennis and basketball.

MEET THE CHENGETAI TEAM NyashaMvumi Nyasha is a 4th year medical student at the University of Zimbabwe. She loves travelling, watching football and reading novels. Babies are her weakness. She believes in changing the world by showing love, an unmatched force, and that is what motivates her toimpact as many lives as possible.

Being part of Chengetai is one of the small ways she intends on making an impact in the lives of others.

She says, “In the community we live in and even in our African culture, a lady freely talking about their period is a taboo yet it is a real issue. Many ladies miss out on school or have a low self-esteem during their period becausethey cannot afford sanitary wear and most suffer in silence. Chengetai gave me the platform to make a difference in the lives of these ladies by giving them a solution and empowering them. A journey of a million miles begins with one step, this is me taking a step.�.

Rudo Masendeke.

Is a first year medical student at the College of Medicine, Malawi. She is passionate about Sexual and Reproductive Health rights especially youth led initiatives. Youth voices matter because they are the best way to rectify the injustices that people continue to suffer.

Rudo is also an active creative and in her spare time she makes various forms of art.
