ARC 107 PORTFOLIO

CONTENT The portfolio contains my 2021 fall ARC107's all the best works. There are four exercises. The first one is space which we have to use sticks and blue foams to make 6*6 cubes. In the second exercise, I did forms.

I made 2D collages, then changed one of them to 3D volumes. Moreover, I made elevations for them. In the last, I stretched elevations to 3D models in rhino by using different commands. For the third exercise, I studied other materials. Then made models by the features of the material. Finally, I used photoshop to make collages for models. In exercise 4, the final, I design a pavilion by the study to a president building.

I then refined a statement from the establishment to design my pavilion.

EX1-SPACE

SPACE explores tectonic and stereotomic methods to define and relate three-dimensional SPACE: a legible area defined by physical or implied edges. The tectonic may be thought of as involving an additive process, such as with frame construction (beams and columns),while the stereotomic may be thought of as involving thick walls or a subtractive process, such as with carved solids. We will consider challenges and advantages of tectonic and stereotomic spatial definition through the processes of iterative physical model making. EX2-FORM FORM explores the architectural object. The goal of this exercise is to expand how students conceptualize threedimensional form through an iterative process. In EX1, architecture was constructed throughthe definition of space, prioritizing the interior. This exercise explores architecture’s outward appearance: a solid, the interstitial area between two solids, or the figural open-space defined by several solids and their context. Through the production of collages, models, drawings, and visualizations, students will become familiar with several processes of form-making. (https:// arc107.syr.edu/2021/handouts/)

I twisted three small cubics on the left to let them be a group.

Also, I filleted edges for the big cubic to make the model more balanced.

I stretched the three rectangles into one same point but using different cubic. I twisted the right one to create more dynamics.

Then I filleted edges and made a void for cubics to make the model more balanced.

I stretched three rectangles up to create a pyramid. I made the blue triangles surround the white one to make gradation. Also, curve the right triangle to make the model more balanced.

EX3-SURFACE SURFACE explores how to closely read and speculate on the exterior and the interior of a building through the composition of tactile elements. Students will experiment with the scale and articulation of spaces by utilizing materiality, color, texture, and pattern. Whereas EX2 focused primarily on the form of an object, this exercise considers the surface as a means to convey an architectural logic. Through precedent analysis, physical modeling, and hybridized drawing methods, students are encouraged to question how the surfaces around us attribute to how we engage, feel, and move about the built environment on a daily basis. The white foam is half transparent. I made the model by using its transparency. The left picture shows many layers of white foams added to how the light passes. The middle one shows how the single layer of white foam lets the light passes.

The blue foam has a higher density which doesn't allow light passes. Only the places that have windows allow lights to pass. We can see the lights create different geometric shapes.

It is a group project. I designed two rooms and arranged all works together.

EX4-PAVILION PAVILION provides an opportunity to synthesize the objectives and outcomes of the previous three exercises: SPACE, FORM, and SURFACE (MATERIAL), and will do so in three parts.Part One of PAVILION entails analysis of built works that have commonalities with aspects of the conceptual design requirements that will be introduced in Part Two, where you will be asked to project forward alternative manifestations of the strategies extracted from the built work in preparation for Part Three, where you will be asked to design a multi-purpose pavilion. Different hight of walls create different privacy.

Different hight of roofs allow more more sunlight to come in and air to circulate.

Use horizontal walls to reinforce directionality and create strips for program.
