National FFA Week

March 2024

FFA week was celebrated from February 19th through the 23rd of this year. We organized various activities anddress-updaysthatwerebothfunandengaging. The events included a Greenhand lunch, ice cream bars for FFA members, wearing chapter shirts, a canned food drive, and the Western Farm Show. Additionally, three members helped out at the Sedgwick County Conservation Dinner. The main objectiveofFFAweekwastopromotethesignificance of FFA and the impact of agriculture education in our school and community. As a token of appreciation, we gave doughnuts to the businesses that support ourFFAchapter.

January’s meeting at the Pretty Prarie roller rink was ablast!Memberssharedin pizza, fellowship, and rollerskating fun to start off thenewyear Theyalsogot the chance to share their ideas for a spring fundraiser and support for students competing in springCDEsandLDEs.

The next chapter meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 22, at 6 pm in the ag room. Members are encouragedtocomehave some snacks and learn how to stamp their own leather ear tag for a keyring at this chapter leatherworkingworkshop.

TheCheneyFFAchapterhasmanyeffectivefundraisingopportunities throughouttheschoolyear.Inthesummerbeforeschool,thechapter worksafireworkstent.Atthebeginningoftheschoolyear,theysell BlueandGoldmeats,decorativepumpkins,andwatermelons.They thenstartedthenewyearoffstrongbysellingstrawberriesfrom Floridain1/4flat,1/2flat,orfullflatsections Theirgoalforthisselling periodwastosell200flatsofstrawberries.Thechapterexceededthis goalbysellingover300flatsofstrawberries.TheCheneyFFAchapter graciouslyappreciatesallsupport.

District STAR Greenhand - Eliza Rosenhagen

Recently, Eliza Rosenhagen earned the South Central District STAR Greenhand Award for Ag Placement. She spent countless hours working on her application and record book but also spent hundreds of hours learning outside of the classroom. The District STAR Greenhand is awarded to the FFA member with the top agriculture placement SAE in our district. She will be recognized at our area banquet for her accomplishments.

Proficiency Awards - Breanna Wells & Erika Wiese

Goat Production: Erika Wiese is this year’s district proficiency winner in goat production. By documenting her SAE hours, investments, and successes, she earned recognition for the entrepreneurshipandmanagementpracticesimplementedinherSAEgoatbusiness.

DairyProduction:BreannaWellsisthisyear’sdistrictproficiencyrunner-upindairyproduction Breanna recorded her hours and experiences spent in her SAE working on her family’s dairy farm and has been recognized for her work in raising and handling dairy cattle and their products.

Western Farm Show

Cheney FFA recently had the opportunity to attend the highly anticipated farm show in Kansas City, where companies from all over the country showcased their latest equipment and technologies. During our visit, a teamofmembersparticipatedinacompetitionthattestedtheirskillsand knowledge in ag mechanics. The competition was challenging, but the team was well-prepared. They showed great teamwork. After the competitionwasover,theteamjoinedtherestofthegroupandspentthe rest of the day exploring the farm show. We visited many booths, interacted with different companies, and learned about the latest technology in the field of agriculture. All in all, it was a memorable experience, and we returned home with plenty of knowledge and inspiration

AgroupofFFAmembersandIattendedthe“GlimpseofCargill”dayonMarch 19,2024 Ibelievethatitwasaveryeducationalday Iwasabletolearnalot aboutthemeatproductionthatCargillpartakesin Ialsolearnedmoreabout thenewandevolvingtechnologythatagriculturecompaniesandfarmersare beginningtotakeadvantageof.Alongwiththemassivelearningexperience, alloftheFFAmembersthatwenthadtoparticipateinacommunityservice event.Inroughlyanhour,wewereabletobag1,300poundsofpotatoesto helpfeedfamiliesacrossthestateofKansas.Whenthedaywasfinishedwe hadlearnedsomuchabouttheAgindustryanditsdifferentcomponentsand wecouldnotwaittocomebackandeducatetheclassroomwiththe informationwehadlearned.
