Flâneur: in 100

Within Urban Ecologies, our attention is drawn to the Logan-Hicks District in New Bedford, Massachusetts, placing a particular emphasis with Envision Resilience. New Bedford boasts a storied history steeped in the whaling industry, which once fueled its prosperity. However, in the present day, the city grapples with pressing issues such as rising sea levels and the prevalence of abandoned structures. In this project, our primary objective is to reignite the bond between the residents of New Bedford and the sea, revitalizing a connection that has endured through generations.

5

New Bedford, MA, is a coastal city with a rich maritime heritage dating back to the 17th century, renowned for its once flourishing whaling industry and textile exports. Over time, the industrial landscape has evolved, and many factories have ceased operations, leaving behind abandoned buildings dotting the cityscape.

The proposed project aims to rejuvenate the local connection to the ocean while addressing contemporary challenges: rising sea levels, which increasingly threaten the city’s coastal areas. The project seeks to revitalize the site into a vibrant and resilient waterfront living district that harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings.

The Time Ruled By Seasons

The Time Ruled By Seasons encapsulates a series of endeavors that tackle the formidable terrain of mountains and the fluidity of water landscapes. This multifaceted project is divided into two distinctive segments: the bridge and the environmental center. Central to the design philosophy is a commitment to seamlessly integrating tectonic structures with the innate beauty of the natural landscape, fostering an environment where interaction enhances the surrounding elements. The bridge project emphasizes capturing the graceful movement of water and the gentle caress of the breeze, resulting in a final product that harmonizes with its environment. Meanwhile, the Environmental Center embodies a narrative of greenery, where the very essence of nature is woven into the fabric of the space, offering visitors an immersive experience in close proximity to the vibrant life around them.

PART II. ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER

Drawing inspiration from the abundant and varied trees present on the site, the project roots a deep connection to nature. The environmental center concept embraces the notion of bridging the gap between the tectonic elements and the nature, fostering continuous engagement with the surrounding landscape. The environmental center seeks to integrate the interplay between defined and open spaces, offering visitors an immersive experience that harmonizes with the environment.
