MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

MARK DUMEZ

TRACEY POWER

There is something about a good summer rain that seems to change things. The smell of blooming flowers and greenery soaking up the gift of growth reminds me of possibility and promise. We've recently witnessed a tectonic shift in culture as the Industrial Age, some have said, has given way to the Age of Information. Old forms and functions have bent to new ways of thinking and doing. In this play, Don and Kathy are in the middle of their own changing worlds, as technology alters their career and personal courses.

Singin’ in the Rain is a musical that inspires memory. Over the past six months whenever I told someone I was directing this musical, their face would light up and they’d immediately begin to tell me what they loved and remembered about the show. Laughter, love and heart are ever LAUGHTER, LOVE present in this bright beautiful little AND HEART ARE package, but also present is the more EVER PRESENT conflicted idea of progress. The entertainment industry has changed dramatically since the days of “the silent picture” and “the vaudeville stage”. We as artists of theatre are constantly re-evaluating our relevance in this new, ever challenging, cultural THE SHARED DESIRE landscape. But no matter how far FOR A GREAT STORY technology and progress take us, there will always be one thing that remains unchanged; the shared desire for a great story. We are here as artists to share this story with you; to inspire old memories and new!

Change, even positive change, can be challenging but can also invite the same kind of glorious and happy feeling that a good summer storm does. After all, we are built for change, for growth and for possibility. Even those of us set in our ways, with the possible exception of Lina, can learn to adapt and even thrive after the rain of change. Aristotle put it another way, “Change in all things is sweet.” And, in the case of this show, well worth singing about!

Enjoy the show!

MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR RANDAL HUBER A remarkable serendipity has come to the Chemainus Theatre Festival. Theatre Angels Alf and Yvonne Pink have generously gifted their private collection of 28 exclusive Arthur Vickers serigraphs. The pieces, all purchased directly from the artist over the past 30 years, are appraised at over $105,000 and celebrate the incredible diversity of Mr. Vickers’ work. This year the Chemainus Theatre will auction 10 of these art pieces. The select works are on display in the upper lobby of the theatre and we invite you to bid in person tonight or online at our website. The silent auction will run until November 16th – the night of our annual benefit gala – though should you wish to take something home with you, there are ‘buy it now’ prices available.

TRACEY POWER Director & Choreographer Raised in the Comox Valley, Tracey was last in Chemainus performing in Christmas on the Air. Recently, she directed and choreographed Chelsea Hotel, featuring the songs of Leonard Cohen for The Firehall Arts Centre and assistant directed Axis Theatre’s, The Number 14. Thank you to the Pink family for this unbelievable gift and to Arthur Vickers for your amazing contributions to Canadian art. For more information about the art pieces and this fabulous donation of art in support of the arts, please visit our website. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire your own serigraph by this iconic West Coast artist and, with 10 pieces available, one is bound to catch your eye. I certainly have my eye on one.

Barbara Lebow

The story begins 20 years after scarlet fever, the depression, and world war II divided their family between Holocaustseized Poland THEY SHARE LITTLE and sheltered IN COMMON BEYOND New York. THEIR FRAGILE Meeting now BLOODLINE. as grown-ups in mid-century Manhattan, they share little in common beyond their fragile bloodline. As sudden roommates, strong-willed Luisa and selfish Rose endeavour to rise above their obvious differences by confronting unexpected family truths, revealing scars of their past, and dealing with their domineering father's relentless guilt. Though many of her dearest allies are now gone, Lusia's imaginary conversations with her Mama, childhood friend Hanna, and lost love Duvid help her cope with her new life in America. Exploring her surroundings and her past, she discovers how seemingly minor, everyday decisions can have enduring consequences.

The 1986 play by Barbara Lebow is more than a typical work of dramatic theatre. A Pretty Girl moves through time, reality and fantasy to tell a beautiful story of tragedy and hope.
