Welcome to Director’s Picks, featuring a very special preview of The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival this autumn.

This year’s theme of Dreams and Nightmares ranges from Blake and Coleridge to Frankenstein and Dracula, exploring the literary power of the unconscious and our enduring fascination with the supernatural.

Our Guest Directors head up some fascinating series: Kevin McCloud explores architecture and design, Will Hutton investigates finance, China Miéville shares the best of future fiction, Mary Beard brings to life ancient Greece and Rome, and Owen Sheers puts poetry centre-stage.

Politics

Taking centre stage, the Festival is delighted to welcome a host of beloved names of theatre and film. Join Martin Jarvis for an exclusive Jeeves in Manhattan performance, or hear Stephen Fry, Jerry Hall and critic Mark Kermode discuss their lives in the limelight.

Reflecting on a year of political turmoil, Cheltenham hosts a series of political debates and discussions. Roy Hattersley joins us and we welcome former politicians Douglas Hurd, Andrew Rawnsley and Matthew Parris.
