EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES
Saint John’s School fosters academic excellence and individual talents, empowering students to become compassionate lifelong learners and ethical catalysts of change in an inclusive environment.
Our Motivation
We are dedicated to creating a nurturing and impactful learning environment where students are encouraged to challenge themselves and realize their full potential as scholars, artists, athletes, and responsible stewards of our community.
We are committed to fostering growth by delivering innovative curricular and co-curricular experiences strategically designed to cultivate essential skills. We emphasize resilience, creativity, diversity, and conscientious leadership to prepare students to navigate and influence change positively.
Our Approach Mission Statement
Founded in 1915, we are a non-profit, college preparatory, non-sectarian, coeducational day school distinctively situated in the residential area of Condado in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We provide a unique, dynamic, and integrated school experience where intellectual growth, emotional depth, and moral wisdom unite to inspire our students and school community.
OUR APPROACH

ECOURAGE resourcefulness, adaptability, and tenacity.
EMBRACE diversity.
NURTURE individual abilities and talents.
CULTIVATE creativity and innovation.
INSTILL conscientious leadership.
STRIVE for excellence in all we do.
We prioritize the comprehensive development of every student, addressing their academic, social, emotional, physical, and mental well-being. We believe that children thrive when their diverse needs are met in a supportive and caring environment. Our holistic approach to education emphasizes emotional intelligence, physical health, social skills, and ethical values, fostering well-rounded individuals who are not only academically strong but also empathetic, resilient, and prepared to face life’s challenges. Our Integrative Wellness Support Team, led by our School Psychologist and School Counselors, strengthens our students’ emotional resilience.
Our teachers use the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework to develop course plans that prioritize meaningful learning in English. UbD emphasizes “backward design,” where educators first focus on the desired learning outcomes and then plan curriculum and instruction to support those goals.
Through UbD, students engage with big ideas and essential questions that promote deep understanding and the ability to transfer knowledge beyond the classroom. This approach ensures that learning goes beyond memorization, empowering students to apply what they’ve learned in realworld contexts.

We believe in nurturing a growth mindset, with happiness as a cornerstone of the learning experience.
Enriching Culture:

• Trimester system for frequent feedback and flexible learning
• Extensive extracurricular activities, clubs, and student organizations
• Student-led commitment to community service
• Professional-level musical productions and fall plays
• Exciting opportunities for student learning travel
• A supportive, close-knit community where faculty and staff are deeply invested in student success
• A dynamic and diverse curriculum that evolves with students’ needs
Ours is a journey of exploration, learning, and growth, where every student is empowered to achieve their full potential.
We challenge students to reach their highest potential by nurturing individual interests and skills. Whether it’s academics, arts, athletics, or civic and cultural endeavors, our programs are designed to support students in exploring their passions and making meaningful contributions to the community.
In addition to our competitive athletics and impactful Outreach Program, secondary school life is enriched with a wide range of extracurricular activities. With over 50 clubs, organizations, and publications, students have numerous opportunities to develop their talents, form strong relationships, and foster a sense of belonging.
Students can engage in journalism through three different news publications in multiple languages. Beyond print, our students are active in various media, including podcasts, radio, digital magazines, and social media news reports.
Public speaking and debate clubs make up one of the largest and most vibrant areas of extracurricular involvement, helping students develop critical communication skills.
For those passionate about STEM, our students excel in local and offisland math, science, and robotics competitions, showcasing their talents and innovation.
Leadership opportunities are abundant, with the Student Council leading the way. This four-time National Gold Council of Excellence award-winning organization exemplifies student leadership at its best.
The Performing Arts also thrive at our school, offering students a chance to participate in musicals, plays, choir, band, and art, whether they are newcomers or seasoned performers. We encourage every student to explore their creative potential in these diverse and welcoming spaces.
Starting in tenth grade, students have the opportunity to participate in the Advanced Placement (AP) Program. This rigorous, college-level curriculum challenges them academically while offering the opportunity to earn college credit. With 30 AP courses available across various subjects— from math and science to humanities and languages—students can tailor their education to their interests and strengths. Students take the AP exams at the end of each course, where high scores may result in college credits, advanced standing in university courses, or both. Our AP Program prepares students for the demands of higher education and cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and subject mastery.
Our College and Academic Advising team provides personalized and comprehensive support, beginning from the ninth grade. Students are paired with an academic advisor who meets with them regularly, offering guidance on academic choices, extracurricular activities, and summer programs. Educational workshops are also organized for students and families. From eleventh grade onward, College Counselors work closely with students, helping them find colleges that align with their passions and ambitions. Counselors mentor students in crafting robust applications and keep them informed of the latest trends, policies, and factors affecting college admissions.
Our school offers a dynamic athletics program for grades 1-12, with 12 sports that foster interscholastic competition. Aligned with the school’s mission, athletics serve as an extension of the classroom, teaching discipline, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork. Through our Hurricanes Code, students are encouraged to represent their school, team, and fellow students with dignity on and off the field. With a focus on team-centered play, quality coaching, and purposeful participation, young athletes gain the confidence and skills to succeed in both sports and life.

We foster strong connections between our community and leadership. Our Head of School hosts monthly opportunities for parents to engage in meaningful conversations, ask questions, and share feedback. These moments, whether through informal gatherings, social events, or dedicated sessions, allow parents to connect directly with the school, ensuring open communication and a shared commitment to student success.
Our alumni community is integral to the Saint John’s School centurylong legacy. Through the SJS Connect Platform, alumni stay connected, network, and mentor one another. They also play a vital role in organizing reunion events and actively contribute to Career Day, where they inspire the next generation of Hurricanes. Whether mentoring current students or collaborating with fellow alumni, our graduates continue to shape the future of SJS.
The cherished traditions that bring our community together are at the heart of Saint John’s School life. From the Faculty and Staff BBQ hosted by the Student Council to kick off the school year to the Seniors’ Entrance on the first day of classes, each event fosters connection and school pride. Family Day, a beloved annual celebration, is just one of many moments when we gather in camaraderie. Fundraising events like Noche Puertorriqueña, the Golf Tournament, and the 5K Run help support our mission, while sports tournaments and pep rallies ignite Hurricane spirit. The student-led School Musical is a yearly highlight, and our alumni stay connected through Holiday Parties and special events, maintaining lifelong bonds with SJS.
Lots of fun, great music, and games bring us together for an amazing day with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Long-standing school community event to celebrate Puerto Rico, its culture, traditions, music, and food while showcasing our students’ artistic talent and creativity.
