FISHING REPORT

Snook biting on Gulf coast By Steve Waters SUN SENTINEL

Not all snook fishing is tough on Florida’s Gulf coast, where the season has been closed since January because of last winter’s cold spell that killed thousands of fish. Jeff Bitner and his son Evan, 13, of Davie, fished in Charlotte Harbor Friday morning with Capt. Gino Bioni, of Plantation. They were unable to locate any mullet when Evan saw some seagulls diving. They ran over and found a large school of pilchards and Evan cast-netted about 50. From there they went to a railroad trestle where the snook were actively feeding. “We were just throwing pilchards underneath there and as soon as they got down, we’d have a snook on,” Bitner said. “We caught and released 30 in about two-and-ahalf hours. Sizes ranged from 6-14 pounds. “At one point we had a tripleheader and landed all three. What a great day.” CHELSEA MATIASH/SUN SENTINEL

BACKS EAGER TO CARRY LOAD ’Canes racked up season-high 49 carries vs. Terps By Steve Gorten SUN SENTINEL

CORAL GABLES — The objective was clear after Maryland linebacker Alex Wujciak intercepted Stephen Morris’ pass and rumbled 60 yards for a touchdown. The pick had the potential to cause the true freshman’s confidence to plummet. But it wouldn’t because the ball, and pressure, was handed off. When Miami’s offense came back on the field trailing 14-6 in the second quarter, senior Graig Cooper ran the ball the first four plays. Mike James took over from

there with four carries on the final six plays of the 10-play, 80-yard drive. James scored on a 2-yard touchdown, stretching the ball across the goal line as three Terrapins took him down. The Hurricanes finished with a season-high 49 carries, for 218 yards, in the 26-20 win Saturday. “The run game I thought was tremendous,” Coach Randy Shannon said. “There were big plays by Lamar Miller, Mike James and Cooper. They did a phenomenal job of running the football, and with the offensive line blocking, it really made a huge difference in the game.” The ’Canes did it without leading rusher Damien Berry, who was held out because of an undisclosed “lower extremity” injury,

successful for us.” The ’Canes have racked up 42 or more carries in each of their four ACC wins. They had 29 at Virginia and 36 vs. Florida State in their two conference losses. “Anytime you get running backs getting 8, 9 yards, you keep pounding the football because if they’re getting those yards you’re doing something good on offense,” Shannon said. “Eventually one of those 8 or 9 [yard] runs may pop for a 30- or 40-yard run and then you get your big touchdown.” Miami’s longest run of the game turned out to be a 22-yard gain by Miller two plays before Wujciak’s return for a touchdown. “I was just trying to get first downs, trying to keep the chains moving,’’ said Miller, who got tips from former UM running back Frank Gore at practice Thursday. “Coach told me on the sidelines not to try to make a home run, just take what they give me.” On Saturday, that would be plenty enough.
