Pregnancy yoga: If you’ve never done it before, there is no be er time to start! Physically it is beneficial to help stretch and prepare your body for labour, but it’s also been shown to reduce stress levels, anxie and depression.

Be kind to yourself: We o en find ourselves worrying about our pregnancy body and the changes we see in the mirror – that’s normal, but it’s time to stop the judgement and start reframing what is actually happening. Write down all the things your amazing body is doing right now… add them to post-it notes and stick them around the house. You, my dear, are a miracle!

Get outdoors: Go for a walk in your local park, spend time in the garden, get fresh air at every opportuni . Taking the time to ground yourself and be present in nature can really contribute to a calmer, happier pregnancy. The gentle exercise will also make you feel be er, both physically and mentally. Be informed: I’m a true believer that knowledge is power, and the more we understand about pregnancy and birth, the be er we can feel about our choices and options.

this is about connecting with the present moment, yourself and your baby, which is vital when it comes to feeling calm and confident going into labour. Mindfulness is also shown to help you bond with your unborn child. Just take fi ve minutes each day – find a comfortable space (inside or out), close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Tune into all your senses in that moment – what can you feel, what can you hear? As you relax into it, you might even notice baby having a wiggle to say hello!

Where did the inspiration for Rockit Rocker come from? Sleep – or the lack of it – was the number-one topic amongst our new-parent friends when my daughter Abby was born. I was lucky – Abby was a good sleeper at night, but daytime naps were trickier, and I o en had to take her for a walk to get her to sleep. As soon as the pram stopped moving, her eyes would spring open, and all hell would break loose!

I created a device that creates a sideto-side motion when it’s a ached to any pram or stroller. The next day, I tested it on Abby’s pram, and it worked! I was able to stop for my cup of co ee with her peacefully asleep by my side. A er two years, my proto pe was refined and the Rockit Rocker was launched.

Make sure you have a thermometer at home. Your baby’s temperature is a useful gauge for knowing how poorly they are. A temperature of 38°C or above is a high temperature and you should seek medical help. Use a digital thermometer for the highest level of accuracy and hold it gently but firmly in your baby’s armpit for around 15 seconds before taking a reading. Never leave baby unsupervised in the bath – even if they have a support. Babies can drown in as li le as 5cm of water, so make sure you have everything you need to hand.

SCANS ISTOCKPHOTOGRAPHY:

THE 20-WEEK SCAN (ANOMALY SCAN)

If there are any concerns following your scan, Chorionic Villi Sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis might be recommended, but for the tests to be accurate, it must be done between 11 and 14 weeks. It does not give you a diagnosis of any abnormalities, simply an idea of whether you are at high risk. These tests are invasive and carry a small risk of miscarriage.

BABY’S FIRST PHOTO

D

This important scan is the most accurate way to predict your due date. And it uses a combination of ultrasound and a blood test to determine the risk of the fetus having a chromosomal abnormali (such as Down’s Syndrome) or genetic syndromes and structural abnormalities. The ultrasound scan checks the fetus is growing well, but it also looks at the translucent space in the tissue at the back of your fetus’s neck – hence the name nuchal scan. The baby’s nasal bone is also measured. Babies with abnormalities tend to accumulate more fl uid behind the neck and have absent nasal bones.

Having a scan during pregnancy can be both exciting and nerve-wracking in equal measure. So what can you expect?

The 20-week scan allows the sonographer to look more closely at the fetus and how the organs are developing. It takes longer than the first scan to look at the heart, head and brain, kidneys and stomach, spine, facial features, hands and feet and the genitals. The sonographer will also look at the placenta, umbilical cord and amniotic fl Unfortunately, uid. it’s at this scan abnormalities are occasionally found. Most things are minor and may not a ect

THE 12-WEEK CHECK UP (NUCHAL SCAN)

the outcome of your pregnancy, but in rare cases, the abnormalities are potentially life-threatening. That said, in the UK we are fortunate that the majori of babies are delivered safely to their parents arms.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a test you pay for and is found under brand names such as the Harmony Test and Panorama. The NHS is starting to use it for women deemed high risk a er initial testing. The test works by detecting the baby’s DNA in the mother’s blood from a simple blood test, usually taken around 9-12 weeks. Through this test, the lab can assess genetic risks of abnormalities like Down’s Syndrome with 99% accuracy. The test costs around £500, and if the results are positive for any risks, you would still need to go on and have a CVS or amniocentesis.

Though this is a scan you pay for, 3D scans are a pre magical experience if you get the opportuni to have one. You will see the baby’s skin and facial features up close, giving you a real feel for what they might look like. And 4D scans will even show moving images of your baby in 3D! The best time to have these scans is between 26-30 weeks, with prices from £50.

uring your pregnancy, you’ll have two main scans, the 12-week check up and the 20-week scan, both using ultrasound. These scans are safe for mother and child, and have been used in pregnancy since the mid-1950s.

“The SAFARI theme is proving increasingly popular as it works equally well for boys and girls. It can be a serene space, but with lots of fun, such as this nursery where we used safari wallpaper with birds and clouds all the way across the ceiling too. We kept the furniture neutral but added pieces like the gira e table lamp (you can play around with lots of di erent animals with this theme) and the lion cushion to add pops of colour. Add texture by using cane and rattan through accessories such as storage baskets and a changing basket, and fi nish o with colours like terracotta, mustard and forest green.” – LAURA WILLIAMS, FOUNDER OF THE MODERN NURSERY

Is your vehicle compatible? Compatibili of the car seat with a vehicle is a consideration everyone must pay a ention to. Fi ing lists and supplier help tools can provide support with this, although in general most seats are compatible with most new cars. Will you use it for travel? If you’re someone who likes to travel or be out and about, an infant carrier would be a great option as you can purchase a compatible pushchair, making the transition from vehicle to exploring the world beyond a smooth and simple process.

• It’s also recommended to have your bags ready from 35 weeks – and kept in a place that’s easy to grab on the way out –so you’re set to go when needed.

For an in-depth look at all your packing options, head to our website,

• Even if you are planning a home birth, it’s advisable to have a hospital bag packed in case you do need to go in unexpectedly.

• If you want to, be prepped with extras in case you need to stay in hospital for longer. You can always have an extra bag packed at home that your birth partner or a family member can bring in for you if needed.

•Be ultra organised with three birth bags; one for you, one for baby, and one for your birth partner.

• Once you have everything laid out that you and baby will need, get your birth partner to pack the bags so they know what’s in the bags and where.

• You can also pack items into clear food bags and clearly label them with what’s inside so anyone can find what you need in an instant.

• Every hospital is di erent, so check with your midwives to see what they provide so you can travel as light as possible.

• Every pregnancy and birth is individual, so you won’t need everything on the list, but pick what you will want and need to make it your experience.

49HAVING A BABY FITNESS

WORKINGITOUT

“For many years we have told women to ‘rest’ – put their feet up and generally not ‘overdo it’ in pregnancy but we now have a huge body of evidence that suggests this just isn’t helpful or accurate advice,” says Hollie Grant, pre- and postnatal expert, and founder of The Bump Plan.

During pregnancy around half or more of women will develop Diastasis Rectus Abdominis – a completely normal and functional separation of our rectus abdominis muscles (known as our ‘sixpack’ abs). It’s important to allow these natural changes to take place, while keeping the core strong.

In the third trimester I really start to focus on the muscles that will be needed during labour and for recovery – no ma er how you birth your baby. There should be a focus on glute engagement to help support the pelvis as it deals with the weight of a growing uterus, and hip mobili work which can help mobilise the pelvis and allow optimal foetal positioning. There are, of course, logistical changes that need to be made to workouts now there is a large bump to contend with, and an emphasis on pelvic floor engagement and relaxation can be helpful for a vaginal birth and recovery. Some women find the breath work of yoga or Pilates really welcoming during this stage, whereas other women will be happy to continue with cardio.

So, in a pregnancy with no complications, exercise doesn’t pose a risk – and is, in fact, actively encouraged. But to help you navigate some of the big questions, Hollie shares her tips for every trimester:

Mood-boosting Pilates and strength training is all part of the package at The Bump Plan

T

In the first trimester, many women feel comfortable continuing with the pes of exercise they’ve previously done, whether that be cardio based, yoga or something else. This is completely safe; however, other women find the first trimester the most physically demanding and have low

By weeks 14 to 16 it’s usually uncomfortable to lie on your back or front, and it’s not advisable to lie flat on your back for too long (around three minutes, max) as it can lead to Supine Hypotensive Syndrome. This may mean you use props to help elevate you when in your usual

2ND TRIMESTER

energy or nausea to contend with.

In the second trimester we want to start thinking more about training the core.

Pilates or yoga class, or that you switch to a prenatal-specific class.

here’s no two ways about it, pregnancy changes everything , including how and when you should exercise. Before you’ve even thought about the childbirth bit, growing a baby will have a huge impact on your body, so knowing how to exercise safely is important if you’re keen to maintain your fitness and build up your strength.

It really is such an individual choice, as what feels good for one person will be di erent for another. The most important thing is that you are enjoying what you do, you feel be er for doing it (rather than it causing pain or exhaustion) and you consider things like doming (where the pressure in your core pushes through the midline of your bump – a sign you need to regress an exercise) or leaking of urine (a sign usually that you are overdoing it!).

1ST TRIMESTER

For this reason, some women prefer to reduce the intensi of their workouts or take more frequent rest days. The only main safe consideration I would include here is that it’s not advisable to get too hot during pregnancy, so you may wish to avoid certain exercises such as Bikram yoga. It’s also worth le ing your doctor or midwife

3RD TRIMESTER

THE THINGIMPORTANTMOSTISTHATYOUENJOYANDFEELBETTERFORDOINGIT

I advise women to turn their a ention to their transversus abdominis, which acts as a corset around the core, and their pelvic floor. Training these muscles can really help to support a growing bump and prepare the body for the demands of motherhood. Strength-based workouts such as Pilates or weight training can be beneficial here at ensuring the postural muscles stay active. Cardiovascularbased workouts are still safe for the remainder of pregnancy, but we would advise you work at a moderate intensi  for these.

FITNESS

“We know most women can continue to exercise throughout their pregnancies safely and that it has far-reaching benefits, both physically and mentally.”

know that you’re aiming for an active pregnancy as soon as you can, so they can let you know if you have any absolute contraindications to be aware of.

Postnatal recovery, breastfeeding, how to get more sleep, and beau editorapproved skincare; explore the latest in the world of mum and baby wellbeing

But new motherhood? That’s another story. Alongside the sleepless nights, dramatic changes to your body and fluctuating hormones, there’s the additional pressure of keeping your small human alive. Sore, chapped and leaky nipples and swollen breasts are all very real challenges that any new mother might face when breastfeeding their newborn.

Then, of course, birthing your beautiful baby… There are very few words in the world to describe that kind of overwhelming wonder you feel bringing new life into the world.

Not only that, but breastfeeding can be tricky to master and alongside the physical changes to your body, the pressure to ‘make it work’ can impact your mental health significantly, too.

BUT FIRSTmilk

To help you on your journey, we caught up with Sioned Hilton, lactation consultant at Medela (medela.co.uk), to get her lowdown on the basics.

Without doubt, the benefits of breastfeeding are plentiful, but it’s o en easier for some than for others. Here’s what you need to know, plus some tips to get you started

T

60 HAVING A BABY

here’s nothing quite like pregnancy to test your relationship with your body; the growing, the stretching, the sickness.

• Have unlimited skin-to-skin contact so you can both practice.

“If you do feel fragile, chat with your midwife, health visitor or GP, or reach out to a voluntary chat line.”

“Ge ing o to the best start with frequent feeds, day and night, will help to establish your milk supply and minimise challenges later on.”

“It takes time for mums to learn what these are, but there are some key behaviours to look out for. Early feeding cues can be seen while baby is sleeping and gently waking, such as sucking on their fists and hands – mum will see them stir, root and become more alert until they’re fully awake. This is a great time to put baby on the breast in those early days.

Top tips

• A end a breastfeeding antenatal class or practice with a doll to try out those breastfeeding positions. You’ll soon find ones that are comfortable for you.

• Watch and learn how your baby feeds and how your breasts work.

UNDERSTAND THEIR CUES

• Avoid si ing upright as it leads to tension and discomfort in your neck and shoulders with time – instead lean forwards and take your breast to baby.

“Check that your baby is lying with an imaginary straight line: nose in line with their belly bu on or their ear in line with their hip crest so they aren’t twisted. Place your nipple towards their nose and bring their chin under your breast – with the abili to tilt their head back, baby’s mouth opens wide, and your nipple will fall into their mouth to stimulate those sucking movements.”

“In those early days a er birth, you’re likely to be a li le tender, but finding a comfortable position to feed is important as discomfort and pain can interfere with that milk ejection (let down) reflex,” says Sioned. “There are a range of positions you can try, including ‘laidback’, ‘side lying’, ‘cross cradle’, ‘clutch’ (sometimes known as ‘rugby hold’) and the more traditional ‘cradle hold’.”

Since it’s nearly impossible to measure the amount of milk baby is ge ing, because it can’t be seen, it’s quite common to wonder if they’re ge ing enough. “Focus on establishing and building your supply during those first two to four weeks a er birth,” suggests Sioned. “In the first 28 days a er birth, your baby should have several wet and three or more soiled nappies per day. A er 28 days, your supply is established, and it’s normal for exclusively breastfeeding babies not to have a dir nappy for up to seven days since the last explosion!

• Try not to compare your experience with other mums – this is di cult, but

And finally, it’s important not to punish yourself if breastfeeding doesn’t work out for you in the way that you hoped. Everyone is di erent – and every baby is di erent – and pu ing extra pressure on yourself to get it ‘right’ won’t help your mental health at a time when you’re already feeling vulnerable.

POSITIONING IS KEY

MEDELA.CO.UKPHOTOGRAPHY:

DON’T FORGET ABOUT YOU

“I always suggest reaching out to local support – whether that’s a breastfeeding group or just a lovely mum-and-baby group. It’s a great way to talk to other mothers who may be facing the same issues or who are a few months down the line and have wonderful advice and support to o er.

remember every mother and baby is di erent!

• If the latch isn’t comfortable, or it hurts when they suck, place your clean finger into the corner of their mouth to break the seal and try again.

“The early hours a er birth are important to help you and your baby to start breastfeeding,” Sioned explains. “Although, rather amazingly, your baby has the abili to instinctively crawl and seek out your breast post-birth, for many it takes time to become proficient, so see the first few days as practice, take your time and get support if you need it.

All babies are programmed to feed when they’re hungry but remember that breastfeeding is also about nurturing and development – not just food.

“Even if you’re sure they can’t possibly be hungry, always be looking out for their cues,” adds Sioned.

• Relax back into the chair or sofa to support the natural positioning.

• Seek support from your midwifery team if you have di culties to resolve challenges early on.

Top tips

• Use extra pillows or a breastfeeding pillow to support you both when feeding.

“Crying is seen as a late feeding cue and for some babies this is the most di cult time to put baby on to the breast because they’re now hungry!”

“If baby is not ge ing enough, or if your health visitor feels like their growth is not following their expected path, make time for a breastfeeding review with a specialist so they can observe a feed, latch and position. They’ll also discuss baby’s feeding pa erns with you.

BREASTFEEDING61HAVING A BABY

GETTING STARTED

“To latch your baby, support their head by placing your palm across their upper back so they can slightly tilt their neck and head back between your thumb and fingers. Un-swaddle them, too. Those li le hands have a job to do by touching and stimulating your breast to release that wonderful love hormone – oxytocin!

Top tips

• Place your feet on a footstool (if the chair is too high) to help you to relax back into the chair.

KNOW YOU ARE ENOUGH

• Note that when your baby goes through growth spurts, teething or is unwell they will go to the breast more frequently and may be on the breast for longer.

• If you are worried, have a chat with your midwife or health visitor to talk things through.

“It’s normal to feel apprehensive. We talk about breastfeeding being ‘natural’, but it does take practice and you must give yourself time to do that,” adds Sioned. “I know it’s clichéd, but mums really must look a er themselves, particularly in those early days with a newborn, and try to rest when baby sleeps.

SUPPLYWILLANDFEEDSFREQUENTDAYNIGHTHELPTOESTABLISHINTHEEARLYDAYS

• Side-lying feeding in bed is great for mums who have had a c-section or stiches, and great for night-time feeds.

A strong pelvic floor can improve everything from back pain to sex. Time to regain control

64HEALTHHAVING A BABY

CAUSE & EFFECT

But first things first – what exactly is your pelvic floor? “It’s a mesh of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that runs from the front to the back of your pelvis in a ‘hammock’ like fashion,” explains Lesley Gilchrist, a registered midwife and cofounder of My Expert Midwife. “It holds your uterus, bladder and bowel in place, as well as helping you to control your bladder and“It’sbowel.something you’ll hear about a lot as your pregnancy progresses, as well as on your post-birth journey but it’s because pregnancy can indeed have a weakening e ect on your pelvic floor.”

W

One in three women admit to having some degree of stress incontinence –leaks of urine that can be brought on by anything from coughing to exercise. Far from being “an older person’s problem,” the condition o en develops because of pregnancy and childbirth. And, honestly, it’s time more of us talked about it…

Not only will the weight of your growing baby increase the pressure on your pelvis and pelvic floor (sometimes preventing them from functioning optimally), but changes in your hormones, designed to make your muscles laxer so baby can pass through the birth canal as your uterus contracts, can make your pelvic floor less strong and thus more prone to overstretching.

hat do bouncing on a trampoline, sneezing, and watching comedy have in common? For many women, the answer is that they cause embarrassing leaks.

“ When women are looked a er by midwives in a low intervention se ing, the incidence of pelvic floor dysfunction following childbirth is low. However, instrumental deliveries such as forceps or a ventouse, a prolonged second stage of labour (particularly if the woman has been actively pushing) and episiotomies can

THE SQUEEZEBIG

– ideally three times a day. This way, if you forget a set or a whole day’s worth, you’ll still be practising enough.

• Make your pelvic floor exercises part of your daily routine, for example, while you brush your teeth (morning and night), when you’re driving to work/doing the school run, or while you’re si ing at your desk.

WHAT TO BUY

• Imagine that you are trying to stop your flow of urine, trying to hold in gas or a poo and – at the same time – that you are holding a tampon inside your vagina. This activates and li s your pelvic floor, from the front to the back, and helps you recognise the muscle group that you are aiming to strengthen.

• While strengthening your pelvic floor is immeasurably important, don’t forget to also allow it to properly relax in between squeezes and a er you’ve finished your exercises.

• Then, try to slowly squeeze and relax the muscles – repeat another 10 times.

• As your pelvic floor becomes stronger, you’ll notice that this slow ‘squeeze and release’ becomes easier. This is a good time to add a pause at the peak of your squeeze. Start by counting to three and then slowly increase up to a count of 10. This can take considerable time to achieve, so don’t be disillusioned if you feel like you are struggling.

• If you’re unsure whether you are squeezing anything at all, try pu ing a finger inside your vagina or ask your partner if they can feel anything during sex while you squeeze.

“When compared to women having a c-section birth before reaching the second stage of labour, women who birth their babies vaginally, in a low-intervention se ing managed by midwives, have the same low incidence of pelvic floor dysfunction six months a er their baby’s birth. This suggests that, in the absence of medical intervention during the second stage of labour and birth, weakening of the pelvic floor could occur during pregnancy or during the first stage of labour –although how this may happen is unclear,” Lesley adds.

Chances are, you’ll have heard of pelvic floor exercises – also known as Kegels

– which are those li le squeezes you can do to strengthen the area. But how many of us actually remember to do them regularly? Understandably, your pelvic floor will require more a ention post-birth than it did before, and Lesley has a handy guide to follow:

a ect women’s pelvic floor health.

• Try to always engage your pelvic floor before you li a heavy object, such as a box or your baby.

• Once you know where to direct your awareness, start in a comfortable and relaxed position. Lying down may initially make it easier to feel what you are doing.

• Do about 10 short and fast ‘squeezes’ to start with.

• Although your lower abdominal muscles will engage, you shouldn’t be pulling your tummy in.

THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP

• Drink plen of water but try to cut down on bladder irritants like tea and co ee.

• Likewise, your bu ocks and your thighs should remain relaxed. This may take some time to accomplish.

Pelvic floor exercises are a bit like flossing –you know you should do them, but it’s not always easy to remember to make them part of your routine. In which case, it could be time to invest in a device or trainer to help you whip your PF into shape. Remember, it’s never too late!

Su ering from backache? That’s another reason to work your pelvic floor. The muscles support your coccyx and, when strengthened, will stop you slumping, taking the pressure o your lower back when you pick up your baby.

HEALTH67HAVING A BABY

ON BATTLE SCARS…

Caesarean section rates are on the rise worldwide but despite its prevalence, there are still many misconceptions around the procedure and a mother’s recovery. We caught up with midwife Louise Broadbridge for her advice

From chewing gum post-surgery to kick start your digestion and help with trapped wind (that’ll be the pain in your shoulder, FYI), to massage balms that aid scar healing, these are our essentials for c-section recovery

“For the body to heal it needs nourishment. It’s so easy to get into the habit of ordering a takeaway when caring for a new baby leaves you less than enthusiastic about rustling up something in the kitchen. Slow cookers are my biggest tip – they’re great for new parents!

caesarean so ensure your diet consists of plen of fruit, veg and that all important water intake to keep things moving.”

“Ge ing through to your uterus and then to your baby will involve cu ing through some nerves. This can result in a feeling of numbness around the area. Although most women regain full sensation, some women do report some change in sensation long term, however, say that it doesn’t cause them any problems or worries.

“It is always a good idea to start with gentle exercise before working your way back to the level you were at before pregnancy. As keen as you may be to get back to it, taking it slowly is kinder to your body and will get you back to full fi tness sooner. Start too soon and you are likely to end up injured.

“Immediately following baby’s birth your scar will be quite red, but this will fade over time and once fully healed will be a faded line that you hardly notice. There are some things you can do to aid its healing, such as massage, but wait until you’ve been signed o by your doctor for this.”

your baby arrives your bleeding may be quite heavy and will likely be a brighter red colour. This will change to a brown appearance over the days ahead.

ON BLEEDING…

ON RECOVERY TIME…

“Although caesarean section is an operation that is performed thousands of times each year, it’s not to be taken lightly. Recovery from what is major surgery takes time and you need to be patient and kind to yourself as you slowly get back on your feet. That said, you will likely feel physically well way before your body has actually fully recovered.

“Although you have had your baby by caesarean section you can still expect to experience some vaginal bleeding. Just as with a vaginal birth this can last between two and four weeks – although for some women some light bleeding can continue for up to 12 weeks. In the initial days a er

“There are times that you may see an increase in your blood loss.  As your baby breastfeeds, your uterus will contract and cause some increase in how much you lose.  This is also the case when you overdo things a li le on the activi front.  Take this as your body telling you to take things easy!”

“Being sensible is the first step. Being mobile from the start is really important, too, to reduce the risk of developing blood clots. In years gone by women were tucked up in bed for weeks a er a caesarean. We now know this is not the best way to kickstart wellness. Gentle activities such as short walks are great.

From the so to the more structured, there is no pe of carrier that is be er than any other, it’s all about choosing what suits you, your lifes le and your baby. “All pes of carriers or slings (the terms are interchangeable) can be used both indoors and outdoors,” adds Roamy.

With a vast amount of choice out there, where do you start with choosing a carrier – and where should you look to for advice? “Baby carriers are like jeans – they all fi t people di erently,” admits Roamy. “What works for one person may not be right for another, so it’s essential to try a few options, either while pregnant or once baby has arrived. The most important factor, however, is safe . Always ensure you can see baby’s face and their airways are clear, with the top edge of the carrier no higher than the nape of baby’s neck to ensure unobstructed airflow. Secondly, baby needs to be held as tightly as a cuddle in arms to ensure they can’t slump.”

From then, for the next couple of years, every li le thing in the day that is ever so slightly out of the ordinary will be put down to teething. Just a few short weeks ago, every gro moment your baby had was blamed on “colic” or “reflux” or “wind” and, in time, the blame will shi to “they missed their nap” and “they must be sickening for something” right through to “terrible twos/ threes/fours…”So,whendoes teething start? What are the signs? What helps and when should you worry? Well, stop Googling; here’s everything you ever wanted to know about when those first few teeth start popping through.

What age does teething usually start?

FALSE: Nappy rash. There is no evidence to suggest that teething causes nappy rash no ma er what Google says. Quite simply, babies of this age are having more solids which alter their stools and are also pu ing anything and everything in their mouths so can pick up a range of fungus or bacteria which, in turn, might cause a nappy rash. Teething also does not cause diarrhoea, so, if you see a change to your

Teething happens at a time when your baby is developing fast in so many ways. It rarely causes problems but always seems to get the blame. months old, and some still have nothing but gums as they near their first birthday. The bo om two middle teeth generally come through first, followed by the top two middle teeth. By the time a child is about three years old they will have their full set of 20 milk teeth.

TRUE: Red gums. Just where the tooth is about to break through, you can sometimes see a slightly raised and inflamed area, a bit like a pimple. Just occasionally the gum bleeds, but it will only be a spot or two and isn’t anything to worry about.

common way for them to self-soothe. They might do it when a tooth is coming through, but this doesn’t mean that the teething is causing irritation. It should se le in a day or two so, if your baby seems to be troubled by their ears for more than three days, see your GP to rule out an ear infection.

PARTLY TRUE: Pain. There is plen of good evidence to suggest that teething causes no more than mild pain and that the majori of the 20 teeth come through without any pain or upset at all. If you do think your baby is a li le sore with a tooth coming through, then try rubbing the gums with a clean finger and use all the soothing strategies that you found helped your li le one in those first couple of months. Most babies simply need more cuddles.

TEETHING75HAVING A BABY

PARTLY TRUE: Fre ing. Some babies do get fussier and grumpier when they’re cu ing their teeth but it’s actually more likely that they are just having a bad week. From four to six months old babies start to develop a di erent way of sleeping. Sleep cycles begin to emerge alongside a change in the way restful sleep is achieved and, if your baby doesn’t now get enough time to nap, they will be very irritable. As your baby goes into their fourth month,

aim to gently build a baby-led routine.

FALSE: Dribbling. Excessive dribbling tends to start at about four months but dribbling at this age has very li le to do with teeth coming through and is actually caused by the increased salivation needed as babies start babbling. Four months is when vocalisation really takes o – all those charming coos and babbles – and saliva is needed to moisturise the gums, lips and tongue. Babies simply haven’t learnt how to stop the saliva escaping. Dribbling increases again at around six months as baby starts to become ready for food. Protect your baby’s chin from dribble rash by using a very simple barrier ointment, such as a thin smear of Vaseline.

CHEWING IS THE MAIN WAY BABIES EXPLORE THE WORLD, AND THIS ‘ORAL PHASE’ CAN GO ON FOR YEARS

PARTLY TRUE: Chewing. Babies love to chew on things – their fist, your knuckles, toys… it’s the main way that babies explore the world, and this ‘oral phase’ goes on for years. However, teething can cause some babies to need to chew more, and for them to want harder things to chew. Make sure to provide plen of washable, chewable baby toys, ensuring that you check the safe label. You could even chill (not freeze) teething toys in the fridge. If your baby is over six months and has started on solids, a nice chunk of uncooked carrot or a baked bread crust can provide a tastier chewing experience but remember that you should never leave

PARTLY TRUE: Flushed cheeks. O en just one cheek is slightly fl ushed, and the evidence says that it’s more likely to be caused by something else, or nothing at all, than by an emerging tooth. But a fl ushed cheek can, occasionally, accompany a new tooth as it pushes through and there is nothing you need to do about it. It will go away again all by itself and there is no need to give any medicine. If your baby has a temperature, see your GP.

How will I know when my baby is teething? While teething gets blamed for many things, in truth, symptoms are actually very mild and most teeth don’t cause any symptoms at all – o en you’ll only notice a tooth has come through when you’re playing, your li le one laughs, and you see a new tooth glinting back at you! Here are a few things which you might see – some might be caused by teething, and some are not, but teething will almost certainly get the blame:

Weaning your baby can bring with it a whole host of questions, but kickstarting your li le one’s journey of food discovery could be easier (and more fun) than you might think

A

whol ome START

What advice would you o er parents who are worried about choking?

I would say it’s perfectly normal to be nervous about this! I’d recommend doing a baby first aid course prior to starting to wean to build your confidence. Then begin by o ering so finger foods to start with, such as well-cooked broccoli florets, potato and avocado, then o er strips of salmon, chicken and egg yolks. Research shows that it’s good to o er babies a varie of textures so they learn how to swallow and cope with di erent textures in their mouths. Go in gently to build their confidence (as well as your own). Lots of role modelling can help – and be sure to always sit with baby when they're eating.

• They can swallow the food – babies who aren’t ready will push their food back out with their tongue, so they get more on their face than they do in their mouths. Try to look out for these signals all occurring at the same time, rather than just as a one-o .

When it comes to dairy, it’s not recommended to o er cow’s milk as a main drink until baby is at least one year old. You can add it into food though (if baby isn’t allergic).

Weaning can be so up and down – some babies take to it easily and others not so much. This is normal, so try not to panic

There are so many di ering opinions about the best age to start weaning, how does a parent know when baby is ready?

With so much conflicting advice, this can be a huge challenge for parents to navigate. Ultimately, though, it’s recommended that babies are generally ready for weaning at around six months of age. But rather than counting down the days or months until they reach six months, it’s be er to look out for their individual signs of readiness, such as:

When is the right time to introduce meat and dairy?

With so many myths floating around, we caught up with baby and child nutritionist and best-selling author Charlo e StirlingReed to get some answers on raising a happy eater.

t doesn’t ma er how many parenting books you read, how many IG accounts you follow, or how much time you spend on Google at 3am, there will always be elements of motherhood that inevitably feel overwhelming – and weaning your baby for the first time is up there. Even if you’re someone who enjoys being in the kitchen, peeling, cooking and blending countless pes of fruit and vegetables only for them to be thrown back in your face (o en quite literally) can get a li le… tiresome, shall we say? Then there are other anxieties to overcome – baby-led or spoon fed? Am I giving my baby the right foods? Choking, allergies… the list can feel endless.

RATHER THAN COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL THEY REACH SIX MONTHS, LOOK OUT FOR SIGNS OF READINESS

if your baby doesn’t seem to want to eat. Lots of role modelling can help your baby learn how and what to eat and see the enjoyment in food, so try to dine with them as much as you can. It’s important to persevere with new foods – give them time and patience but keep trying gently.

How important is it to persevere with new foods?

WEANING83HAVING A BABY

If your li le one has never had dairy or formula milk (normally based on cow’s milk) before, then you might want to o er cow’s milk for the first time as per the allergy guidelines I share on my website (srnutrition.co.uk) – starting with a quarter-to-half a teaspoon at a time and increasing slowly over a few days.

Make it fun! This may sound unrealistic at times, but the more you make weaning an enjoyable experience for your baby, the more likely they will want to be at the table, in the highchair, and the more they will want to eat. It takes time and patience from your perspective, for sure, but try to have a routine around mealtimes. Play some games before you start, make lots of eye contact and let them explore their food – this will all help!

• They can stay in a si ing position and hold their head steady.

• They can coordinate their eyes, hands, and mouth so they can look at the food, pick it up and put it towards their mouth all by themselves.

ISTOCKPHOTOGRAPHY: I

much help to like sweeter tastes (such as fruit) but o ering some very di erent flavours (bi er, savoury, neutral – which a plethora of veggies will cover) can help to expose baby’s palate to a nice varie early on. Some research shows that this can help with baby’s acceptance of vegetables later, too. Some great options include broccoli, green beans, cauliflower, avocado, courge e, spinach and kale. However, remember that this is just one method of beginning and you can start however you want.

You can certainly start o ering meat at the start of your weaning journey. I’d say that if you usually eat meat as a family, start to introduce it soon a er you’ve o ered some single tastes of veggies to help them get familiar with it. It will also ensure they’re ge ing some iron in their

Kate and her family

In the back of my mind, I know what is in there, why the materials have made this particular beanbag comfortable, fun to own, cheap and easy to buy. It’s there to brighten up a neglected patio, but I hadn’t given it much more thought than that.

Our daughter, who is three, has started ‘swimming’ enthusiastically, hooting with delight as she hurls armfuls of plastic snow high in the air. You can imagine the scene. We begin clearing up, coaxing her away, and march in with dustpans, buckets and brushes. By now, I can see the polys rene floating into the corners of the garden, over the wall, slipping into the drain. It’s 98% air – I can’t contain it.

A zero-waste lifes le can feel near impossible when raising a family, but the right tweaks can help to reduce your environmental impact. Writer Kate Hughes shares her story

Shopping now is very di erent – both in experience and cost. The first thing to disappear by default was the big supermarket shop. Try walking through one and finding a display that doesn’t have any plastic in it. It

Seeing as nobody seemed to be pulling it all together, my family decided to find out for ourselves what that change in lifes le really meant and how far we were prepared to go. This wasn’t, we knew from the beginning, about making huge, but short-term gestures as some sort of experiment. This had to be about comprehensive, informed change we would pursue for the rest of our lives.

Like millions of others, we once raced round a standard supermarket every other week, buying the same things we did last time thanks to well-honed brand recognition and aisle knowledge. We could have done the grocery shop in our sleep.

Sure, the aim was to eat everything we’d bought before going round in another circle, but we never reached that prize. It was like playing a dystopian game of passthe-parcel with ourselves. (I was also guil of chucking food in with the bin waste too, confident that it would simply break down into benign organic ma er in landfill. It was one of the worst assumptions I could have made. Food waste in landfill isn’t exposed to the same conditions as a nice warm compost bin. It rots to produce methane instead – one of the greenhouse gases contributing the most to climate change. Park the plastic for a second, if you want to make one easy change, that’s it – always compost your food waste.)

Plastic was the starting point. From that day on we refused every piece of single use plastic and even all possible reusable plastic. From there we have spent the last fi ve years building on that decision to roll out change across the rest of our lives, from switching our energy supplier to ditching disposable nappies. They have each felt like tiny incremental changes at the time, but if we look back now, or step away from our household into someone else’s, we quickly realise those steps mean our lifes le is now almost unrecognisable.

We have all been told we need to change our habits if we have a hope of “saving the world”. The only problem is, nobody has told us what that means. Sure, there are siloed discussions around plastic, and meat, and fl ying, but what does the whole picture look like?

won’t happen. Even the fruit and veg, with their own natural packaging, are di cult to find not encased in the stu .

When we explain we don’t have a bin because we don’t create any waste, most people look at us with a bemused expression before asking how that’s even possible. I was once told we were “regressing just to prove a point”. It was early days, at a point when the e orts we were making felt futile and that all they did was create distance between us and our friends. I was hurt by that statement at the time – made by a woman who has since made concerted e orts to cut out plastic herself. I guess it’s now a badge of honour. Those first months of zero waste were a bit chaotic and emotional, though. And of course, it wasn’t just about breaking the ‘big shop’ habits either. There were definitely a few times when we’d grab a packet of Quavers at lunch or a snack to placate the kids on a long journey and not realise what we’d done for hours. When it finally dawned on us, those feelings of ridiculousness came flooding back.

We went ‘zero waste’ overnight – moving away from throwaway single use plastic items to reusables for everything we brought into our home. In hindsight, it was a slightly stupid, all-or-nothing decision. Buying food that isn’t wrapped in plastic was one of the hardest changes to make and it’s fair to say we were spectacularly underprepared for its implications. We were total wannabe foodies who

be released into a bleak landfill site – and the pollution I am directly, inescapably responsible for will start again.

We started buying fruit and veg from a greengrocer and milk in glass bo les that were le on our doorstep to be refilled by a milkman. I hadn’t realised they all still existed until we went looking for them.

ECO LIVING87HAVING A BABY

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

It didn’t help that there was still a kind of legacy plastic in our home. That’s what those Insta lifes le gurus don’t tell you, what to do with all the plastic that has already seeped in – the Tupperware and takeaway boxes kept for the batch cooking plans that somehow never quite happen, or the handful of disposable forks you snatched at the till on the lunchtime sandwich

Li any piece of gravel down the side of our house or dig around in a border and you’ll still find polys rene balls. They will be there, probably, for thousands of years because we just didn’t think. For us, “beanbag day” was the tipping point that finally woke us up to what we were blindly doing. So, we changed it. We changed it that day and we changed it permanently.

These days, our standard food shop means taking a bunch of emp glass jars and ba ered old co on bags to a couple of independent shops within walking distance of our high street. We clink our way in, weigh out the goods we need into our own containers – from spaghe i and oil to cereal and sweets – and head home again.

food and drive home where we would emp the last lot of identical, perfectly edible but “past its best” food into the compost and the plastic into the bin.

Polys rene is a form of plastic that experts now believe never breaks down. In just a few seconds we had fundamentally polluted not only our own backyard, but also the world’s water system – forever.

the big supermarket shop. Try finding a display that doesn’t

enjoyed cooking but had fallen into the classic pasta sauce rut. We could make meals from scratch, but it was easier on a wet, dark Wednesday evening, when the kids were already climbing the walls, to grab something conveniently packaged.

never quite happen, or the handful of disposable forks you snatched at the till on

They’ll still find it too, despite years of trying to keep it out of our lives. Throwing reusable plastic like Tupperware out once it’s there is pointless anyway. You can’t ever get rid of plastic – that’s the whole problem – so once it’s been manufactured and paid for, however long ago, the best, most sustainable thing to do is to use it as much as possible before recycling it only when it is no longer fi t for purpose.

We’ve finally dug ourselves out of the kind of bread, pasta, cheese, fish finger, meat curry diet we had fallen into while we were concentrating on other things. Our food repertoire is wider, be er for our health and our wallets.

THE SIMPLE LIFE

Changing our shopping habits, unearthing new recipes, finding viable alternatives to plastic-wrapped products shipped in from the other side of the world has been genuinely fun, fascinating and empowering.

competitions because none of the prizes –long-haul holidays, electronic goods – were sustainable. It was also the summer our eldest started school.

Cue a bit of weight loss, cash recovery and no incriminating wrappers. I used to eye people who snacked on ‘rabbit food’ with thinly veiled suspicion but so help me, it turns out sunflower seeds and walnuts are more than acceptable, though obviously they’re be er washed down with a decent glug of English wine.

ECO LIVING 88 HAVING A BABY

When they realised we were serious about all this, some friends and family started playing a weird game of find-theplastic whenever they came round, rifling through cupboards and randomly opening drawers as if we had a dir li le secret.

The eco messages we get as a socie are still stuck on reducing our consumption of plastic and meat. It’s about not taking that new plastic bag at the supermarket or supporting token moves by big retailers. I understand why but we were some distance from that by now.

By the summer of 2018 our home, life and behaviours were starting to look… di erent. Even our relationships with other people had shi ed somehow as we got into the swing of drawing new conclusions over everyday choices, what we wanted from our lives and how we imagined our future.

The plastic concerns in our house had, by this stage, zeroed on fine details, including avoiding plastic tape on deliveries, remembering to dodge sparkly birthday cards and managing the last of the biros.

I had apologetically mentioned our stance on plastic to her teachers, clearly harassed at the start of a new year, who had already laminated everything within a six-mile radius by the time I got to them. And yet they were remarkably gracious.

The problem was that though the changes we had made had been huge and the e ects great, we were aware that we were still fairly new to all this a er just a year. Most people who live in a non-mainstream way have done so for decades, perhaps even since birth. We just weren’t enough of an authori yet to confidently own the di erences.

And besides, we wanted to fi t in with the other parents and carers, not set our stall out as ‘other’. At least not until we knew them be er. I remember deliberately steering away from in-depth conversations at the school gates about what we might get the kids for birthdays and Christmas for fear of the awkward conversations it might throw up. We were well out of our depth on must-have toys and didn’t want to ask – not least because we really didn’t want to come across as judgmental.

KATE’S TIPS FOR LOWERING YOUR IMPACT AS A PARENT:

Make it sustainable – in every sense. When you do buy, make sure it’s built to last. When you make lifes le changes, be confi dent you can see them through.

run just in case.

This was the summer that we first noticed that none of the adverts on TV – for washing powder or fashion labels, furniture or fast food – related to us anymore. We stopped entering

The school has become used to us these days. Last Christmas we got a phone call to discuss the use of sequins on our daughter’s festive creations and teachers now bound across the playground to tell us when they’ve ditched the laminator and the gli er. Of course, our own integration into the school communi was way down the priorities list compared with our daughter’s.Nowapproaching her 8th birthday, she is more than happy to state that “we don’t use plastic” in a loud and confident voice. If you pushed her a li le harder, she would tell you, like plen of other kids, about plastic bags killing fish in the ocean.

Try to think of the intrinsic value of everything that passes through your hands and work from there. You’ll quickly fi nd that you automatically conserve and reuse it by default. That goes for physical items, such as clothes and furniture, to resources like water and electrici .

Never assume that someone, somewhere in the process, has taken responsibili for the environmental impact of a product. Even if it has a li le picture of the planet on it, a green tick, or claims to be ‘eco-friendly’.

Slow down. Taking time to consider whether you really need that item gives you back control – over your bank balance if nothing else. Don’t fall for sneaky selling signals or the artifi cial hype around certain events. Black Friday is 99.5% rubbish – just ask the consumer group Which?

Take lessons from history. We’re at the end of a 60-year-long social experiment that has destroyed our planet in its pursuit of new sources of revenue for the few. If you’re looking for ways to make things cheaper and more sustainable, you can’t go far wrong with a few tips from your gran!

G st ted:

Forget about trying to do this perfectly. It’s impossible. Just go for it and start something now, giving yourself permission to revise later.

The changes and substitutions are still coming as they should be but within a year or two, we felt like we had fundamentally re-assessed our relationship with food for the be er and learned how to find, consider and adopt a more environmentally friendly approach.

CULTURE CLASH

In the lunch queue at school she’ll hand back the sachets of ketchup that keep turning up with food, and when we’re out, she’ll turn to her li le brother to tell him that we won’t buy the item he is fussing for because it’s made of plastic. To his credit he usually puts it straight down, though whether that’s because the sister he idolises has told him o or he’s worried about turtles, it’s hard to say.

more inventive, independent and content their play. They even seem to share be er when there are fewer, not more, items to entertain them. Exploration and experience are higher on the kids’ priori list than I ever realised.

Like so many parents, we have always been clear with the children about the reasons for buying some goods but not others. Though here, we agonise over ge ing the balance right. We know we need to demonstrate the values and traits we consider important while encouraging our children to be their own people, authentic and secure in their choices, personalities and hopes. They also have to be allowed to be kids having fun without the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Yes, our kids are young. But they seem to have a clari and an association with nature that we have lost as adults. It’s a gap that makes it easy to imagine we live separated from nature and that protecting it is at worst another weigh responsibili and at best a ‘nice to have’. We even talk about “ge ing out into nature” as if we’re not biological beings ourselves.

In our house, it has undoubtedly been harder to exclude the plastic from our children’s bedrooms than anywhere else, but at the same time the intimidating army of other first-day parents (now close friends) have started asking us for tips on reducing waste. They tell us of their determination to ensure their next round of birthday par bags is plastic free. Nobody wants to be the first to stop handing the damned things out, mostly over worries about the judgement. And let’s face it, parents judge.

We’re also acutely aware that because we’re a li le ‘out of line’ these days there is a risk that the kids may struggle to connect with others because of a lack of certain social reference points. They don’t have the same toys or

If our daughter is given a plastic gi she’s usually the first person to identi a conflict, but it’s vital that she feels in charge of what she does next, including whether she keeps it or not. Sometimes she will and that has to be OK.

accessories that other kids do, and I’ve seen the delight on our children’s faces when they arrive at the homes of their friends to find a world of all-singing, alldancing toys. I can’t blink before they’re both struggling into synthetic princess gowns complete with plastic tiaras.

Our families and friends are itching to buy these things for the kids. They want to give them that pleasure, but they generously hold back on the gi ing gratification knowing we’re not up for it. Of course, we daydream about raiding the local branch of a massive retailer without a care in the world, returning to rain down on our beautiful kids all the things that their li le hearts desire at that fleeting but intense moment. For a while it would be fun and sometimes we do feel a bit mean in the most ridiculous, first world way.

We had finally put our heads above this particular parapet by the time of our daughter’s 5th birthday. We’d avoided the balloons and shiny decorations. There wasn’t a jaun throwaway tablecloth or palm-oil filled sweets. We were in the woods, not the village hall. In other words, we’d slyly taken the cowards’ way out of the problem by changing the se ing.

Our daughter has certainly made more than one adult around her stop and think. But I’d be lying if I said we weren’t a li le apprehensive about how this lifes le shi a ects the kids.

HEART & CRAFTS

We get it. In the face of these carpets of twinkling possibilities, wooden toys and natural fibres will always struggle to compete. No ma er how full and rich your imagination, an old-school teddy can’t o er a pitch perfect rendition of Let it Go at the touch of a bu on.

But we’re not just worried about the kids being in on the latest craze or demonstrating largesse to pint-sized guests. Our children don’t have felt tip pens, they have coloured pencils. That’s partly, I’ll be honest, because the sofa would never be the same again but mostly it’s because felt tips are plastic – a kind of invisible plastic we never saw before. Have I worried their creativi may be hindered because there isn’t a pot of PVA or a glue stick around? Sure, I have. Have the children noticed? Nope.

Like every other parent, we want them to have everything. We just need to transition from what ‘everything’ meant for us as kids to what it needs to mean for the next generation. There are numerous studies out there that show the fewer toys children have at their disposal, the

But we couldn’t quite get past the par bag compulsion either. Instead, each child received a reusable co on bag containing a second-hand book about games to play. The disappointment was palpable. The adults had a great a ernoon – ignoring the increasingly feral children and prodding the fire with a beer and an ill-placed sense of combustion competence. But some of the kids may never forgive us for the lack of take-home treasure.

But I’m not sure we should always dismiss our kids’ awareness of the environment so readily. Our kids beg us to let them play outside in the depths of winter – usually in the most inappropriate of summery outfi ts. They champion the bug hotels and the mini ponds. Bike rides are be er than back-to-back Bob the Builder any day of the week.

Everything else that’s used to shape the toys is also non-toxic; from the e-zero glue to the organic pigments and waterbased dyes. Even the packaging is made from recycled paper and biodegradable soy ink. You’ll find the toys stocked across a wealth of UK stockists, including Scandibørn and Natural Baby Shower. plantoys.com

The idea for the brand was dreamt up on the high seas by founders Mark Tremle and Peter Tindall, both keen sailors who hated the synthetic ma resses found on most yachts. In their frustration, the pair started handmaking a natural fibre version that wouldn’t ‘sweat’. Following the birth of Mark’s first child, they had a lightbulb moment and began devoting the same clever thinking to ma resses for babies.

Plan Toys

There’s something inherently nostalgic about wooden toys, isn’t there? And brilliantly they’re more popular than ever thanks to the likes of Plan Toys, a Thai company that continues to push the boundaries of what it means to be a sustainable brand.

OK, nothing can guarantee that baby will sleep through the night, but you can at least up your chances by investing in the best bedding from Naturalmat, the British brand that's been supporting the sleep of li le ones for more than two decades now.

Set up more than 40 years ago by a group of graduates, the company was the very first to make toys from reclaimed rubberwood trees – an environmentally friendly material still used today.

But its sustainable ethos goes way beyond its products, regularly partnering with charities and supporting causes close to the brand founders’ hearts. When Mori learned that more than 37% of children in London were living in pover , it set about creating the Kindness Project in partnership with local chari Li le Village. The Li le Green Sheep’s story may have started with certified organic, hypoallergenic baby ma resses, but the brand has gone on to create some of the most beautiful nursery and home products out there, including Moses baskets, blankets, and dreamy sheepskin rugs. In fact, its passion to surround our tots with the most natural environments possible, away from toxins and harmful chemicals, has seen it become one of the UK’s leading ethical baby brands. The ma resses are made from springy coconut coir and so co on, as well as a not-so-secret ingredient, organic lambswool. Wool is known for its breathable properties; it traps heat when needed and disperses it when it’s too warm – an essential for babies, who are unable to regulate their own temperature. Colourful Cornish label Frugi has always put the planet first with its organic co on clothing cleverly designed to stand the test of time (even its swimwear and accessories are made from postconsumer recycled plastic), so it stands to reason that much of its charitable giving is also targeted at helping the environment. Having supported charities such as the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Chance for Childhood, Frugi’s Li le Clothes Big Change campaign has also proven hugely impactful, having raised more than £1,000,000 to date. welovefrugi.com

Baby’s skin is extremely delicate; with fewer elastic fibres, it’s far more permeable than adult skin, meaning anything applied to the surface sinks in more readily. So, when it comes to lotions, it makes sense to use only the most natural formulas to avoid irritation.

Working in partnership with the chari SOS Children, this social enterprise goes above and beyond to support orphaned and vulnerable youngsters all over the world; so much so, it’s raised more than £280,000 since 2013. British brand Bamboo Bamboo’s iconic tableware has inspired a ton of imitations. There is no denying reusable nappies can benefi t both the environment and your bank balance but for some, the very thought of them can conjure up ideas of old-school towelling nappies that were notoriously di cult to clean and put on. Thank goodness, then, for brands like Totsbots, who are saving the planet from thousands of nappies going to landfill with its easy-to-use (and easy to clean, thanks to the disposable liners that you’re able to purchase with them) collection of cloth nappies made from super-so bamboo. Finding s lish yet sustainable clothing, toys and nursery essentials for babies and children got a whole lot easier when online retailer Kidly came on to the scene in 2016. In fact, it’s become such a onestop shop for 0–5-year-olds, we wonder what we did before it existed. Founder (and fellow parent) James Hart always believed that s le and substance can indeed coexist, so while everything on the site is design-led and beautifully curated, it’s also genuinely useful and the store champions only eco-conscious brands. The same can be said for KIDLY Label – Kidly’s own collection of clothing and toys. Everything is also Oeko-Tex certified (so, no harmful chemicals are used in the dyeing process) and even the packaging is recyclable or biodegradable. kidly.co.uk

hether you’re a first-time parent or not, the transition a er materni /paterni leave and returning to work can be tough. Will you still be up to speed in the o ce? Can you arrive on time having had to get both yourself and baby ready in the morning? And how exactly do you maintain an air of professionalism at a Monday-morning

– and yourself – ready for the big change. This way, your baby will already experience the journey and any prospective new environments as part of their routine. This can easily be arranged by communication with your baby’s nursery or care facili . They, just like you, want the best for your li le one, so will be happy to organise anything to make the transition easier.

The first day of your baby’s introduction to a childminder, nanny or nursery can be daunting so it’s o en a good idea to perform a practice run to get your baby

Leaving your baby with an au pair, nanny or nursery for the first time is never easy, but there are things you can do to make the transition as smooth as possible, says Julia Gaskell HANDOVER

Throughout this process, it’s important to remember that no one knows your baby be er than you, so it’s essential to communicate clearly and e ectively with your childminder, nanny or nursery about what works best for your child. When making a se ling-in plan with a nursery or carer, ensure that the following information is shared with them.

Julia Gaskell is a Norland Nanny and head of Norland Agency, Alumni, Consultancy & Training. She has owned an outstanding private day care nursery in Somerset for more than 22 years. Find out more at norland.ac.uk

ISTOCKPHOTOGRAPHY:

It is important that your baby creates a good relationship with their nanny, nursery or carer. This can be a double-edged sword; no one wants their baby to form a stronger a achment to their caregiver than the one with their parents or primary carer. As a parent, you will always be the most important person in your baby’s world; your bond is irreplaceable. A sign of a good carer is that your child can go o and explore independently but return when the chips are down for some reassurance and comfort.

Firstly, when at home, your baby will be used to a routine, it helps them feel safe and secure, and helps you stay on top of the demands of a young baby. It’s useful to share this with your nursery or nanny so they can adhere to it. However, expect flexibili where possible, as a carer may not be able to feed your baby at the same time as you can, for example. Most good carers will ensure the routine is followed to the best of their abili as their priori , like yours, is ensuring the health and happiness of your baby.

It can be di cult, but it’s essential to always say a proper goodbye to your baby prior to leaving them. Sneaking out when they are occupied or distracted will result in them constantly wondering where you are and worrying about when you will disappear. It’s be er in the long term to face the tears at the time, as your baby will learn to trust that you will always return to themHandingeventually.yourbaby over to their caregiver can be emotionally challenging for both of you, but it is important for you to remain as calm as possible during this time, as your baby will feed o your energy and respond accordingly. Therefore, it is best to allocate time to the handover. Try not to rush so you have time to respond to your baby’s needs in what can be an anxious time for them. If your baby begins to cry and is being comforted by nursery sta , it’s useful to take yourself out of sight so you can reassure yourself that they will be able to calm your baby down without you. But only a er you have said goodbye to your baby. Try not to get involved with comforting them at this time (hard, I know) as they will learn that you always come back.

make sure you have back-ups! Another useful tool when navigating being away from your baby is telephone communication. Any good carer will be in open communication with you when needed. They will be happy to send updates during the day of what your child is doing and how they are faring without you. I always encourage parents to call the nursery during the day, so they have a regular check in with their child.

CHILDCARE103HAVING A BABY

It can be challenging to know what to say or do when saying goodbye to your baby. Use phrases like, ‘I know you’re feeling upset, but mummy will come back’ or

Anything you feel particularly strongly about, whether that’s your baby’s likes and dislikes, things they are afraid of or things they like to do, should be compiled in a document to share with the nursery. You could include ways to soothe your baby and the names of family members and pets. Any names of special items, such as a comforting toy, is also a good idea. Too much information is be er than too li le. It’s also reassuring for your child to include photos in the document that bring them comfort. Photos of the two of you together, siblings and even pets can help them feel close to you even when you are not physically present.

THE LONG GOODBYE

‘I know this is hard for you, I’ll miss you too, but I will come back later to take you home’. Even if you think your baby is too young to understand, they will still get some sense of comfort from your reassuring tone and soothing words. It may not seem to work the first time or even the first few times, but over time your baby will benefit from this approach.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

When it comes to leaving your baby, it’s perfectly normal for there to be tears (for both parties). Practising leaving your child li le and o en will help them to learn to adjust to periods of time away from you – you can begin this in a gentle way for short periods then build on it. Again, any good childcare provider will help facilitate this for you. Ensure this practice is led in response to your baby’s needs and do not be afraid to change the plan or routine if it does not work in the way you expect. This is a big learning curve for both of you.

SETTLING SUPPORT

A transitional object such as a toy or a blanket can be useful for a child as it can remind them of you and home. Make sure that your baby’s carer knows that it is special and that they can access it during the day. These items can be easily lost so

The most important thing to remember when engaging in this di cult transition in your baby’s care, is to communicate. Work to establish an easy and e ective method of communication with their carer and don’t be shy in being completely honest about how you feel and what you want. If you choose to place your child in a nursery you should be allocated a key point of contact, so you are not communicating with a legion of sta . Once children are se led and secure with a caregiver their enjoyment of the experience o ered is assured and any guilt you feel at leaving will start to dissipate as you see their progress.

Don’t forget to pack your materni or hospital notes. Check your travel insurance is still valid in pregnancy. If you’re more than 28 weeks, remember that you may need a le er from your doctor to fl y. Check in as much luggage as possible, and travel with a light, four-wheeled suitcase.

Remember that baby food, milk and sterilised water is exempt from the 100ml rule.

Be sure to book the bassinet if on a long haul flight. In many destinations you can rent or borrow baby kit from your hotel –everything from buggies to travel cots and highchairs. Check this before you fl y. Check if your car seat is suitable for fl ying – it’ll have an FAA-approved sticker, if so. This means the car seat can be used on planes as well as in cars because it has passed the inversion test.

Not only is going green the best thing to do for the future of the planet and our children, but it’s more likely to make your family holiday even more memorable. It’s about having a more meaningful experience – staying somewhere that celebrates local culture. Let the children be mini explorers, whether that is learning how to protect marine life, experiencing the cra of local artisans, or staying on a working farm. You will find that you’ll make memories to truly cherish.

Gr n GETAWAYS

Sustainable travel writer and parent Holly Tuppen reveals how we can all be a li le greener on holiday – and why now is the time to embrace it

U

nderstandably, being a green traveller is not high up on most parents’ agendas. Compost toilets and a dip in a cold pond are not exactly things that spring to mind when planning a relaxing break. But thankfully, these days, there’s more to sustainable travel; think authentic experiences, unusual and beautifully cra ed buildings, kids’ clubs with an educational ethos and exploring less-trodden paths.

• EMBRACE HELP: Unlike a lot of us here in the UK, in many other countries people will delight in making a fuss of your baby. If a waiter wants to coo over your li le one while you finish your meal, let them get on with it!

If camping with li le ones sounds terri ing, Canopy & Stars (canopyandstars.co.uk)

Whether you want to go trekking in Iran or cycling in the Peak District, Responsible Travel (responsibletravel.com) is the UK’s largest responsible tour operator and only lists adventures that benefit the local people and wildlife. With more than 400 small operators on board, you’ll not be short of choice either. Head to lesserknown Montenegro for kayaking, swimming and hiking adventures from a renovated farmhouse overlooking Lake Skadar. Or for long-haul ideas, try the wildliferich Borneo Family Tour, including the chance to see orangutans, turtles, pygmy elephants and gibbons.

DON’T SHY AWAY FROM CAMPING

My picks for an ethical family holiday

There is a lot to be said for a family staycation. Not only is it easier with kids in tow but from a sustainable travel perspective, avoiding flying, taking trains and supporting National Parks and the local economy all get big ticks. Taking the train rather than flying to Edinburgh saves the equivalent energy of 830 hours of TV watching. It also adds to the adventure!

Green Traveller (greentraveller. co.uk) lists green holidays in the UK and Europe, including farm stays, self-catering co ages and eco-friendly transport. Also worth a look are Preseli Venture eco-centre in Wales for coastal adventures and Scotland’s North Coast 500 road trip for spectacular scenery. If culture is more your thing, head to the Tate in St Ives, swot up on the Vikings in York or immerse yourself in maritime history at Liverpool’s museums.

• GET ORGANISED: Eat well before you get on the plane, take a refillable water bo le on your trip that will not spill everywhere and try to have simple pleasures to hand to make you feel human during the flight, such as moisturiser and toothpaste.

• BE REALISTIC: Holidaying with a tot is di erent from when you were single or a carefree couple. Be prepared to take it in turns so you both get some grown-up time and embrace the simpler pleasures; seeing the world through the eyes of your baby can be quite magical!

GO ON A ADVENTURERESPONSIBLE

• LESS IS MORE : Lugging around excess baby gear on holiday is tiresome. Ditch your heavy nappy bag and put essentials in a compact washbag that you can chuck into a backpack or beach bag when needed.

DISCOVER WHAT’S ON YOUR DOORSTEP

• RESPECT THE ROUTINE : I love nothing more than ditching routines on holiday, but if this results in no sleep for anyone, it’s a futile exercise. If your baby needs food and sleep at certain times of the day to be amenable, it’s best to work around that.

• Check the ethical standards of tour operators, particularly if you are volunteering or wildlife is involved.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:

PICK A HOTEL THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Nikoi Island is an eco-resort just three hours from Singapore by car and boat. The rooms are sun-kissed bamboo structures, built using local materials, and the resort’s chari , The Island Foundation, has helped educate thousands of local people. Elsewhere, Soneva Kiri’s kids’ club in Thailand is accurately named ‘The Eco Den’, while closer to home, Cornish spa hotel Bedruthen is one of the most sustainable hotels in the UK.

A hotel which cares for the local communi is not only going to provide a more enjoyable experience but will no doubt care more for its guests, too. Arbiters of places to stay – such as i-escape.com – lets you search specifically for eco hotels, while Bouteco (bouteco.co) puts ‘hip hotels with heart’ on the map.

FAMILY TRAVEL113HAVING A BABY

CHOOSE EXPERIENCES THAT DO GOOD

• Avoid plastic bo les and bags by carrying reusable ones and opt for filtered water rather than bo led.

Making a concerted e ort to enrich local communities through your tourist pounds will o en lead to the most memorable parts of your holiday. Whether it’s watching your dinner being hauled onto shore, or ge ing momentarily immersed in a local festival. Look for tours with a social purpose – something like Reali Tours (reali tours.org), which leads cycling trips around Delhi and guides tourists through Mumbai’s slums where it gives back 80% of its profits. Or try London’s Unseen Tours, where a formerly homeless person leads a unique walking tour of the ci . Some of Airbnb’s Experiences have a social impact, too, which means they are run by local non-profits.

Berridon Farm, Devon, available to book via Canopy & Stars

very own grass-roofed hobbit house or test out bothy living in The Ferry Waiting Room in the Highland wilderness.

• Before exploring the local flora and fauna, find out what the guidelines are for protecting wildlife and its habitats.
