Edvard Munch (1863- 1944) was a Norwegian expressionist painter and printmaker, and is recognised today as one of the world’s most famous artists. Munch was born in 1863 and began to paint at the age of just 12 years old following a childhood marked by tragedy. His mother died from tuberculosis when he was just ve, and his older sister died from the same disease nine years later, resulting in his life-long interest in themes of loss and vulnerability.

Munch can be said to be almost as famous for his life as he is for his art. In periods, he lived a nomadic and turbulent bohemian life,

together with the Kristiania Bohemians in the Norwegian capital of Oslo, and with the group around the wine bar Zum schwarzen Ferkel in Berlin.

During his long life as an artist, Munch experimented with the dierent painterly directions of his time, but it is rst and foremost as a symbolist and expressionist that he has become famous. Paintings such as e Scream, Madonna, Death in the Sickroom and e Dance of Life are highly praised icons in art history.

Munch lived a life devoted to art. His artistic oeuvre extends over a period of more than 60 years, during which he painted over 2,000 paintings and made over 4,000 drawings and 15,400 prints. More than half of his paintings and nearly all of his print reliefs are on display at the Munch Museum in Oslo, while Viking is the proud custodian of the largest private collection outside of the Norwegian capital, with 28 original pieces on display on its ocean ships. anks to an exclusive partnership with Oslo’s Munch Museum, Viking has the digital rights to the entire Munch catalogue, and is thrilled to be able to share Munch’s work with so many guests as they travel the rivers and oceans of the world.
