We heavenly ones, clad in tragic robes, Celebrate solemn obsequies for the human race. With tragic melody, we sing funeral dirges for the peoples who have endured their final destiny. These frozen places, once fat with the fruits of the land, were verdant with leafy branches all around; The ground flourished white with lilies, while the West Wind breathed through these countrysides. In all the cities at war the high ramparts with their lofty pinnacles stood proudly; The foyers of kings were spread with crocuses, and pleasant halls were spread with soft couches. Now in the headlong whirlwind of events, all lie charred by flames. Lurid smoke darkens the fields, And the ashes of heroes hang in the unquiet air. Year: 2019 Duration: 7:00 About the piece: The apocalyptic text which inspired this work, though 450 years old, could easily describe the present day or near future. The eerie timelessness of the text is echoed in a musical representation of the Heavenly Ones that sounds at once ancient, futuristic, familiar, and otherworldly, and which has an air of something too vast for translation, like a lament filtered down to us from a higher dimension.
Performance Notes: Notated singing can occur in any octave. The general effect is more important than exact sung pitches. Quarter tones can be produced in any manner the performers choose. Be careful not to alter quarter-tone harmonies to be more “normal” equal tempered ones, but rather “lean into” the beating.
