Some people are lucky, they can easily fall asleep a few minutes after they lie down. But, for others, getting a decent night’s rest can prove to be a challenge. When that happens, there are a few mistakes that people make which further drops their chances of falling asleep.

Not Having a Routine Sure, that’s what the majority of people do, they sleep only when they’re tired, but it is possible to cause disruptions in your sleep patterns over time. It’s normal for young people to stay up late at night at parties, concerts or watching movies, and wake up early the next day. That’s because young people can handle a lack of routine. But, here’s the catch. Our bodies crave routine, structure. This means setting a bedtime and then sticking to it makes it easier for you to fall asleep. Having a routine makes it possible for the body to recognize when to power down on cue. This reduces hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, while increasing melatonin which induces sleep. So, one of the big mistakes that people make is not sticking to a routine.

Taking Supplements At sundown, the brain secrets a hormone called Melatonin. This helps wind down to sleep when the time comes. Some people mess with this process by taking supplements that have melatonin. While it may seem that it helps move the process along, it can only help you snooze a few minutes faster in comparison. These are insignificant as compared using proper sleeping pills. And that’s not all, frequently using supplements can mess with your body’s biological clock,


leading to further problems. As a result, your brain ends up secreting less melatonin. Supplements that contain melatonin aren’t nearly as effective as sleeping medications that have been designed for people having problems sleeping such as insomnia.

Getting Out Of Bed when You Can’t Sleep We all know that it takes a few minutes to fall asleep. Common advice says we should give at least 15 minutes to fall asleep. But, there are some folks who decide to jump out of bed and do something such as watch TV or listen to music if they have problems falling asleep in the first few minutes. This is a big no-no, mainly because the time you spend resting can be incredibly beneficial to the body. That’s because resting helps lower cortisol levels which is the body’s stress hormone. Besides, getting out of bed and doing something will only leave you awake even more, which makes it even harder to fall asleep later on.

Going for A Nightcap This one seems to be a crowd favourite, especially for the guys. According to research done by the National Sleep Foundation in the US, around 20% of people use alcohol to help themselves sleep. There are many claims that alcohol helps them fall asleep faster, but the truth is, going for a nightcap every time you can’t fall asleep will do a number on your overall sleep quality in the long run, which is why it should be avoided. While alcohol can cause harm to your sleep cycle, using good quality strong sleeping pills can help you get the shuteye you need. Using alcohol is a bad idea because it messes with your sleep patterns, causing less REM sleep and also leads to an interrupted circadian rhythm. It also leads to an increase need to urinate during the night, which further disrupts your sleep. So, while alcohol may make you dose off faster, the amount of disruptions it causes will leave you feeling lacklustre the next morning. If you really want to have a drink, have a couple while you’re having dinner and then stop. The good news is that there are many choices in terms of sleeping medication that one can use to fall asleep faster and for longer. But, it is advised to start off with the smallest dose available to see its effects before you decide if you require strong sleeping pills. While exercise and a healthy diet can help knock out insomnia in some people, when all else fails, popping a sleeping pill usually pays off.
