Sibutramine (Generic Name) is a schedule IV drug prescribed for the treatment of obesity (in addition to diet and exercise). It is available in the form of oral capsules of 5mg, 10mg, and 15 mg. In certain studies related to placebo-controlled, the most common side- effects found were dryness in mouth, insomnia, headache, and constipation. Three of 2068 patients being treated with Sibutramine suffered from convulsions. 0.7% suffered from bruising; one patient suffered from prolonged bleeding; it may also show its effect on platelet function. One obese patient also suffered from interstitial nephritis. 1.6% had increased AST, ALT, GGT, LDH when they went through liver tests. It may be noted that although these events occurred while taking this drug, they may have no causal relationship with the drug. Some effects are caused due to abnormal weight gain or obesity.
