A Legacy of Love: Honoring My Mother, 10 Years Later

On March 10, 2015, I celebrated my mother’s birthday her last. Seventeen days later, on March 27, my world shifted in an instant I found myself sitting in a cold waiting area at Huntsville Hospital, unaware that the next few moments would forever change my life A doctor and a nurse walked in quietly, asking if any other family members were joining me. When I replied no, my voice laced with anxiety, the doctor took my hands, squeezed them tightly, and whispered the words that shattered my heart: “She went into cardiac arrest… we couldn’t save her.” I dropped to my knees, tears filling my eyes. My mother was gone Just like that And in the blink of an eye, my whole life changed The loss of a mother is something words cannot truly explain It’s a void that never quite fills, a pain that time never fully heals. But in the midst of that pain, I found purpose.

I was born the youngest of seven on July 16, 1986, to a woman who carried the weight of the world on her shoulders with grace and resilience. My mother, a single mother, raised us with more than just love, she gave us lessons in integrity, perseverance, and the power of treating people well While some children are gifted money and resources, my siblings and I were gifted with respect, manners, and the understanding that our character would take us further than anything material ever could I watched my mother stretch every resource to care for us, never focusing on what we lacked but instead making the most of what we had. That strength, that intentionality, shaped me. It fueled my go-getter mentality and my passion for service

Just four years before losing my mother, I had lost my father to a stroke By the age of 29, I had buried both parents, and grief had become an all-too-familiar companion But instead of letting it break me, I made a promise: I would build a legacy not just for myself, but for my family and for others. That promise led me to financial literacy, homeownership advocacy, and leadership development I’ve seen firsthand how a lack of knowledge can keep people trapped in cycles of struggle, and I’ve made it my mission to change that narrative Through community events, financial education, and mentorship, I strive to empower others because I know what it’s like to feel lost, and I want others to know they can find their way.

Everything I do is in honor of my mother. She is my why. Her strength drives me, her love fuels me, and her legacy lives through me If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: Love deeply, lead with purpose, and cherish every moment; yesterday is already gone, today is almost over, and tomorrow is never promised. To anyone who has lost a mother, I see you. I feel your pain. And I want you to know grief may change you, but it does not have to break you You can take that pain and turn it into purpose You can still build, still lead, still love And most importantly, you can still flourish

Held by Grace: Finding Strength in the Pain of Loss

Losing my mom was one of the hardest seasons I’ve walked through. And to be honest, the journey of grief it never stops, it just gets less aggressive as time goes on My mother was my best friend, my biggest supporter, the only one early on who supported my decision of entrepreneurship, she’s why I could never stop even in hard seasons She was my sounding board for wisdom and the one who had a gift for bringing people together Her smile could light up a room and her heart was so full of kindness

She passed from a minor heart attack after coming home from a common hysterectomy surgery. I had come to Birmingham a couple days prior to be with her in the hospital but it seemed that all was well and that she would be okay to be released So I was back in Huntsville days later when she passed at home in her bedroom The paramedics couldn’t get there in time When I got the news I was in so much shock I didn’t even cry at first I was stuck, I couldn’t believe it was real After helping to plan the funeral, I ended up being the one to do her makeup. I had never done makeup on a dead body and I will never do it again but it’s what I knew she would have wanted. That moment was like an out of body experience. With tears and anxiety I did makeup on my mother’s hard body with no life coming from it My aunt Michelle sat with me through it and God kept my hand steady It was the closure I needed to press forward in strength But I blamed myself for not asking more questions at the hospital, I blamed the doctor for not being more diligent with my mom’s after care, I blamed my stepdad for not paying more attention at home I needed to be mad at someone but the truth of the matter is, I really don’t know what happened And blaming everyone did nothing for my soul except for make it feel more dark. Blame and guilt doesn’t take the pain away, it only gives the pain an excuse to grow.

I had to let it go I had to jump back into working because I didn’t have a traditional job with paid time off, I had just launched as a freelance makeup artist So I started journaling, and that became one of the most therapeutic things I could have done in that season of my life Almost nine years later, I don’t journal as much now but I still pull out the journal that’s dedicated to my mom when I think of her, when I wish she were here for a special moment or when I just want to “talk” to her.

I’m so blessed to have had her as my mother for almost 25 years of life She wasn’t perfect, but that woman genuinely did things with a pure motive And I genuinely feel like she was taken away from me, and from the world too soon I’ll never understand, but I hold on to peace that surpasses my understanding And the thing about God is that His plan doesn’t always have to make sense to us in order for it to be sovereign It’s crazy how God was the very person I was frustrated towards, but simultaneously the only one who could bring me comfort when grief hit me like a ton of bricks. Only God got me through the initial shock, the initial pain, the initial heartache And only God keeps me through holidays every year, Mother’s Day every year, her birthday every year, and her passing anniversary every year

Losing my mom on April 13, 2016 is a dark day that will be marked in my heart forever, but knowing she’s with the Lord in paradise and that we’ll one day meet again in heaven is a joy that no pain can steal from me. Inger Celeste Black Conwell, I love you more than words could ever express. Thank you for everything. See you soon

Meet Our Photographer

What inspired you to become a photographer?

My love for photography was born from a desire to serve God and people For me, photography is more than just a business it’s a ministry that allows me to use my Godgiven talents to bless others.

In 2000, I prayed for a ministry, and God revealed photography to me. Within a year, I became the photographer for my church and soon after established N’Sight Photography, which later became Neville Simpson Photography, specializing in wedding and portrait photography

Two decades later, God blessed me with the opportunity to transition from a 20-year career as a software engineer with NASA to become a full-time photographer Being able to do what I love while supporting my family is the answer to years of prayer something I never take for granted.

How has your style and approach to photography evolved over the years?

I’ve always been known for creating images that are vivid, artistic, and full of life, with dramatic lighting. That core style has remained, but over the years, I have expanded my focus across multiple photography genres:

Neville Simpson Photography – Specializing in wedding and portrait photography for individuals, couples, and families

Headshot HSV – Focused on headshots for individuals, companies, and events, as well as branding, product, and event photography for entrepreneurs and businesses.

HSV Kids Studio – Dedicated to capturing kids’ personalities through portrait photography

HSV and Beyond Art Gallery – Showcasing inspirational and motivational artwork from Huntsville, AL, and beyond

NHS Studio – Specializing in architectural and interior photography

Ain’t God good!

Can you share a memorable project or shoot that had a lasting impact on you?

As a photographer, I’ve always understood the value of photographs, especially of the people we love But that became even clearer when it came to my mother. For years, I wanted to take professional photos of her, but for no good reason, we kept putting it off Then, a year before she passed, she visited me in Huntsville, and I decided it had to happen before she left. Of course, she fussed about not being prepared she didn’t bring the right clothes, she needed to get her hair done, her makeup wasn’t ready But I told her not to worry We went shopping for dresses, stopped by my friend Destiny Payton’s beauty shop to pick out a wig, and after calling around town, I finally found a makeup artist who could take her at 7 PM that night

At around 8:30 PM, we finally started shooting never knowing those would be the images we’d later use for her funeral program and celebration decor That day, and those photos, will forever be etched in my heart I am so grateful I got the opportunity to do them.

You recently experienced the loss of your mother. How has that shaped you personally and professionally?

It’s still so recent that I don’t think the full impact on my personal and professional life has even begun to take shape. But spiritually, the transformation has been undeniable Before going through this, I always imagined losing my mother would be the worst day of my life I thought I would completely break down, and in many ways, I feared death itself But God blessed me to be the only family member in the hospital when she passed And yes, I cried but the peace of God that surpasses all understanding, the one I had read about for years, became real that day. I still can’t explain it

Even more incredibly, I was the one who delivered her eulogy in front of over 300 people I’ve had a stutter my entire life, but in that moment, I didn’t stutter once. You can’t tell me God isn’t real or that His promises aren’t true "Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world " Amen

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone navigating grief?

If you’ve loved and lost someone dear to you, grief is a lifelong journey it doesn’t truly end

At first, I was surprised by how well I handled it, but then, out of nowhere, it hit me like a ton of bricks, as if I had just received the news Grief is unpredictable, and there’s no right or wrong way to go through it

So my advice? Do you.

Lean on family, go to therapy, take a drive, cry, create, remember, pray, make a post do whatever helps you not to "get over it" but to get through it with a smile on the other side.

Grieving & Leading: A Legacy of Love

I love the relational side of being a real estate agent. Building and bonding with clients is energizing to me. That’s why my mood could not have been better on a Saturday morning in August 2023 The sun was shining, and I had just finished a walkthrough in Harvest, AL I was right on time to meet my next clients for a new contract in Madison, AL, when I got a call from my oldest son

I had been waiting for his call because his 18-year-old son was driving to college by himself for the first time But that was not the call I received Instead, his first words, which still ring in my head two years later, were not about the 18-year-old, but about the 19-year-old My oldest grandson had been shot Who gets shot on a sunny Saturday morning?

I had two sons myself, so I stayed awake too many Friday and Saturday nights while the clubs were open, dreading someone calling me with those words But this was Saturday morning, so my question, the one I thought I already knew the answer to, is what still echoes in my head today: “Is he going to be okay”? “No”, was his one-word reply, and I felt like all the air had been sucked out of the car. The grace of God is all that held me to safety I called my client before I called my husband to explain hysterically that I wasn’t going to make it My greatest leadership role in that moment was not in my business, but as the matriarch of my family The first question I asked myself was: How in the world would I grieve and lead at the same time? I’m not much of a crier, but I learned to cry. I learned that crying frees those around you to cry. We lead the way we want to be led We lead best with honesty and authenticity

God has called all of us to lead in various spaces, and it’s important that we bring with us all He has placed in us, teaching even as we learn. Through the loss of my grandson, I learned the importance of loving my entire family with passion and intentionality. I poured into them, held them closer and led with love. What I didn’t know then was that my journey with loss wasn’t over Two months later I lost my oldest brother, then in January 2025, I lost my mother The foundation of everything good in me began with her and I am rediscovering who I am without caring for and serving her.

Grief has a way of testing everything you thought you knew about strength, faith, and resilience

I’ve had to remind myself that love is the legacy that never fades That in every tear, every ache, every empty chair, love lives on I carry it forward I carry it by loving my children and grandchildren fiercely I carry it in my work, my relations and in every moment that I choose faith over fear.

We don’t get to choose the losses we experience but we do get to choose how we honor the lives of those we love And I choose love, Always

Protecting Futures: A Journey of Leadership, Resilience, and Service

I’m Josephine Knowles a wife, mother of three wonderful boys (John, Julian, and Julius), and a passionate advocate for helping others secure the future they’ve worked hard to build. Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and now living in Huntsville, Alabama, I’ve learned that every step in life shapes who we are and where we’re headed My journey into the insurance industry was not a straight path but a series of choices that led me to discover my true calling In 2017, after a period of unemployment, I pursued an insurance license and began working with Craig Wiggins Allstate Agency (now Bo Cochran Allstate Agency), the largest Allstate agency in the Southeast, where I found my passion for ensuring families have the right coverage

By 2020, as the insurance landscape evolved and client needs outgrew the limitations of a singlecompany framework, I knew I had to do something bigger In January 2023, I took a leap of faith and founded Knowles Insurance Agency with a simple vision: to offer clients multiple carrier options and comprehensive coverage including Home, Auto, Life, Business, and Recreational insurance and to serve as a trusted advisor. More than just building a business, I wanted to create a place where people feel seen, heard, and cared for. Outside of work, my family is the heartbeat of my life, reminding me daily why I do what I do: to help others protect their futures, just as I protect mine.

My encouraging message:

Dear Leader,

Becoming a leader is not an overnight transformation it’s a journey shaped by bold, courageous steps in the face of adversity, hardship, and uncertainty True leadership is established when we refuse to stop, when we push forward despite the fear that may try to hold us back It’s about embracing failure, not as a setback, but as an opportunity to learn and grow As leaders, we must remember that our path is not defined by perfection, but by the relentless drive to improve, evolve, and inspire. Surround yourself with the right people those who share your vision and mindset and know that together, you will turn obstacles into stepping stones. Your vision is not just a dream; it’s a reality in the making, and with determination, it will surely come to pass. Keep leading with courage, resilience, and unwavering belief. Your impact is farreaching, and your ability to inspire others is a powerful gift.

Understanding Grief: Navigating Loss with Compassion and Care

Over the past year, my family and close community have experienced loss in a way we had never faced before. Mortality, once a distant thought, became a frequent and deeply personal reality. Beyond the emotional impact, the responsibilities and challenges that come with loss can be overwhelming. As I navigated my own grief sometimes through avoidance I observed the varied ways others coped. Some, like me, pushed emotions aside to “be strong” for others, while some withdrew into isolation, and others were consumed by overwhelming emotions. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, but I encourage us all to take it one day at a time, honoring both our loved ones and ourselves

Grief is a deeply personal response to loss, whether it’s the passing of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or a major life change Understanding its different forms can help in the healing process Anticipatory grief occurs when a loss is expected, such as with a terminal illness Complicated grief lingers and interferes with daily life, while disenfranchised grief happens when a loss isn’t openly acknowledged, such as the death of a pet or an estranged family member Recognizing the type of grief we or others are experiencing is the first step toward healing.

While grief is often described in stages denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance it’s important to remember that these emotions don’t follow a set order. Some may revisit stages multiple times, while others may not experience certain emotions at all. Each person’s journey through grief is unique, and honoring personal timelines is essential. Healthy coping strategies include staying connected with loved ones, journaling, engaging in physical activity, and practicing spiritual reflection. Taking care of one’s body and mind through rest, routine, and proper nutrition can also provide much-needed support

However, when grief becomes overwhelming leading to prolonged isolation, substance abuse, or an inability to function it may be time to seek professional help There is no shame in reaching out for support; in fact, doing so can be a vital step toward healing Grief, though painful, is a reflection of deep love and connection It is not a destination but a journey that requires patience, compassion, and support By acknowledging our emotions, allowing ourselves to heal, and seeking help when needed, we can honor both our loss and the strength that carries us forward.

Our Personal Journey

For our family, faith and resilience are the cornerstones of everything we do I have had the privilege of witnessing my wife, Pamela, transform her grief into purpose following the loss of her parents, while our children navigated the loss of their grandparents. These experiences not only deepened our faith but also strengthened our resolve to build a legacy of service and excellence. As I often say, Her faith increased my faith.

This journey has inspired us to integrate our personal story with our professional mission At 4D Communications, we’re more than a business we’re a community committed to healing, growth, and empowerment through technology.

Join us on this journey as we bridge technology and community, and help pave the way for a future where every individual has the tools to thrive

A LETTER TO MY PARENTS

As I look at this photo, I see more than just a moment frozen in time I see the foundation of everything I am. The love, strength, and unwavering faith that you both poured into me shaped the woman I’ve become. Every challenge I’ve faced, every triumph I’ve celebrated, and every step I’ve taken in my journey has been guided by the values you instilled in me.

Losing you both was the hardest thing I’ve ever endured, but through that loss, I found my greatest strength. Your love didn’t leave with you it remains in every lesson you taught me, every prayer you prayed over me, and every act of kindness and leadership I strive to embody.

Little Pam, in this photo, had no idea what was ahead of her. But God knew. And He reminded me time and time again “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart.”

(Jeremiah 1:5)

Mom and Dad, your legacy lives on through me, through my family, and through the work I do every day. Thank you for your sacrifices, your wisdom, and your endless love. Because of you, I walk in purpose.

With love and gratitude,

Pamela Bass

A MILESTONE. A MISSION. A MOVEMENT.

March 10th is more than just a date on the calendar for me. It marks the birthday of my late mother, the last one I was blessed to spend with her ten years ago. It also represents my 10year anniversary as a realtor with the Huntsville Area Association. A decade of growth, resilience, and purpose.

This feature is more than just a launch it’s a tribute. It’s the embodiment of Losing, Leading & Loving, a vision dedicated to those who have faced loss, yet found the strength to lead with love To those who have turned pain into purpose, grief into growth, and setbacks into stepping stones.

This is me. This is my story. And this is just the beginning.

To everyone who has supported this journey, shared their stories, and embraced this vision thank you. Your presence, your voices, and your belief mean everything. We are not just telling stories; we are building a movement of resilience, leadership, and impact.

And trust me, there’s so much more to come.

With gratitude,
