Dear friends,
What an incredible journey these past few months have been, as Cultura enters its third year of fulfilling its purpose to support, care for, and celebrate culturally diverse individuals. Amidst our celebrations, one of the most important observances for our organisation is Cultural Diversity Week. It is a profoundly important time for Cultura which supports and cares for nearly 80 multicultural communities. This year, the theme, ‘Our Shared StoriesCelebrating Together,’ deeply resonates with our Purpose, reminding us of the beauty and depth found in the mosaic of cultures that enrich our Australian community.
Reflecting on the past few months filled with celebrations of diversity and harmony, in its 42nd year, our largest event of the year— Pako Festa—was a true manifestation of the joy and diversity of Geelong. Each attendee shared the common purpose of connecting and respecting each other’s culture. It was an incredible celebration of ‘building cultural bridges,’ with over 120,000 people joining the festivities throughout the day. The parade, featuring 38 diverse communities and 2,000 participants, showcased the cultural heritage of our region. This year, we had 24 community
food stalls offering to take the crowds on a culinary journey around the world, and over 50 performance groups showcasing their talents across 5 stages. To see a crowd of this size gather together in unity and harmony is a testament to the Geelong Community. It comes as no surprise that Pako Festa was a recipient of the prestigious 2023 Premier’s Award for Community Harmony, emphasising its significance in promoting social cohesion in our region.
As we mark our second anniversary, Cultura remains committed to fighting for social justice, advocating for harmony, and celebrating diversity. We remain steadfastly a-political and we hope that Geelong has felt the true spirit of Cultura through our major community event - Pako Festa, motivating us all to cherish the invaluable contributions that our multicultural communities make to wider society.
Kind regards,
Joy Leggo OAMAn extraordinary crowd of estimated 120,000 people throughout the day joined in the street party ‘Pako Festa’ on February 24.
Pakington Street, Geelong was transformed into a rainbow of vibrant hues, awe-inspiring costumes and bouncing rhythms as a sea of smiling people of all races, ages and genders joined in Australia’s largest free multicultural gathering.
You could choose to walk, salsa or do the ‘mambo’ as you made your way through the crowd of smiley faces into a world of colour, dance, movement and a fusion of creativity.
This event, supported by the Victorian State Government and City of Greater Geelong was officially opened by Christine Couzens MP and Ella George MP, with the Deputy Prime Minister, The Hon. Richard Marles MP and Geelong Mayor, Cr Trent Sullivan, also in attendance.
In its 42nd year, Pako Festa is the heart of cultural diversity in Geelong; and 2024 was no different. On every corner, hearts beat in time with the drums, while swirling performers, flamenco dancers, Scottish bagpipes and brass bands filled the air, painting the scene a vibrant palette of colour and sparkly glitter.
We would like to congratulate our Parade winners for Pako Festa 2024:
Most Culturally Aware - The Italian community
The Most Innovative Use of Theme ‘Building Cultural Bridges’ - Indonesian Association of Geelong
The Best Musical Entry - Geelong West Brass Band
The School of the Year - Deakin University
We couldn’t have done it without the generous support of our sponsors and volunteers who all came together on the day to support this event.
Taniya Wader, one of our exceptional managers, recently went on a trip that left a lasting impact on many. During her holidays in Thailand, she made a special visit to Mae Hong Son, home to a Karenni refugee camp. Touched by the hardships faced by the residents there, Taniya felt compelled to lend a helping hand.
Learning of her visit, some kind-hearted individuals from our Settlement and Community Development team decided to contribute monetary donations. With these funds, Taniya purchased toys, educational supplies, and tarps to support the people in the camps. “The Karenni community of Geelong all have friends and family in this camp, so it was a small gesture to help support them”, says Taniya.
Although Taniya’s trip was not sponsored or endorsed by Cultura, she felt it was important to make a difference while being in close proximity to the camp during her holiday. Accompanied by heartening photos capturing her visit, Taniya’s actions serve as a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make when they choose to extend a helping hand to those facing adversity.
Taniya’s leadership goes beyond her position, as her everyday actions inspire those around her. We are fortunate to have so many kind and caring individuals on our Cultura Leadership team.
Spotlight on one of our incredible bi-cultural workers Shaghek who has recently been commissioned as a non placement pastor for St Lukes church. St Lukes offer an amazing service to our refugee families in the form of not only Shaghek’s work but provision of household goods and furniture. Ken Anderson has now retired as the pastor but continues his work in offering unwavering support to our refugee families by introducing them to their own volunteer who will take them through all of the donated goods to identify what they need. Shaghek has a steady intake of new arrivals who attend the church. In the past they have welcomed many of the Karen and Karenni community members who have now gone on to create their own churches. Heartiest congratulations to Shaghek!
Saturday 24th February was an incredible display of cultural unity, at our annual Pako Festa.
Events like Pako Festa could not operate and be as amazingly successful as it was, without the dedicated work of volunteers.
Many of our Cultura volunteers participated in the day as well as some volunteers who joined us specifically for this event. We are very grateful to the numerous Cultura staff members who turned into volunteers for the day. It was a fun day to be a part of.
It was incredible to see so many people in orange t-shirts eagerly helping to make the day a success. We had volunteer photographers, volunteers helping hand out information, volunteers riding our Trio-bikes in the parade with some of our lovely elderly residents and all aspects of organizing the event.
Our heartfelt thanks to all volunteers who participated, and we hope that you will join us again for Pako Festa 2025.

Are you over 65, live at home and recovering from an illness or recently had a fall and lost some confidence in managing your day to day tasks? Perhaps accessing a short term restorative care (STRC) package may be the answer. This package is an early intervention, flexible 8 week program designed to help older people reverse or slow “functional decline” and improve their level of independence by providing a range of services that are designed for and approved by the participant. This program is subsidized by the government. To be able to access this program, your GP needs to send a referral to My Aged Care who will arrange an assessor to contact you and determine you eligibility for the program. Please note, that you are not able to receive this program if you live in an aged care facility, or are in receipt of a Home Care Package or Transition Care Package.
Cultura is an approved provider of this service in the greater Geelong area and will be shortly commencing this service in some areas of the Golden Plains Shire. We will be starting this program in Bannockburn in the coming weeks and then will have a staged approach to expand to other areas which are close to Geelong, for example, Teesdale, Inverleigh and Lethbridge. If you would like more information on this and our availability, you can phone us on (03) 5202 5380 or send us an emailhomeservices@cultura.org.au.
In a colourful celebration of cultural diversity, students from the ACFE program at Cultura participated in activities that helped them learn about the significance of Chinese New Year. Led by a knowledgeable trainers, the event showcased the essence of cross-cultural exchange and understanding. ACFE students full of enthusiasm delved into the traditions, customs, and symbolism of Chinese New Year, while gaining a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture.
Through participation in events like Chinese New Year celebrations, students not only broaden their cultural competence but also develop essential skills such as communication, empathy, and adaptability—qualities that are fundamental to success in our multicultural society.
The ACFE program at Cultura serves as a great example of the transformative power of cultural immersion in shaping well-rounded individuals who are equipped to thrive in today’s workforce.

In recent months, our residential community has been bustling with activity. One of the highlights of the past few months was the opportunity to reconnect with the broader community, participating in the Pako Festa parade. We were really happy to offer our residents to participate in one of Geelong’s major events, engaging in the activity that was an important part of their lives. It didn’t only add fun and connection to their lives but also help the residents feel more at home in our wider community, bringing a sense of belonging and satisfaction.
This summer saw us enjoying laid-back moments with coffee by the waterfront, and taking scenic drives into the countryside.
As we sang with the Cloverdale community choir, alongside Ben Costanzo and Joe Serra, memories of our youthful love for music came flooding back. Our regular garden walks are now back on Mondays and Fridays. They not only keep us fit but also let us enjoy the fruits of our labour—fresh lemons, juicy tomatoes, and crunchy green beans straight from our garden. We have also treated our senses to delicious experiences like wine and cheese tastings - simple pleasures that make our days brighter.
This summer has truly been exceptional, filled with unforgettable moments of joy and connection.

Cultura’s Youth Arts Music Leadership program- ‘the ROOT’ youth project - is all about celebrating creativity, culture and community.
Over the past four months, an incredible group of young people from many migrant communities of Geelong have been gathering together at the Hub to enjoy workshops in music, visual art, dance, singing, songwriting and spoken word. The Hub buzzes with sound, movement and inspiration as the youth participants develop creative skills and confidence, guided by professional artist mentors. Their ideas, stories and skills have been integrated, through a codesign process, to build an original, multidisciplinary piece.
Pako Festa was the first opportunity for the group to share this creative piece with the
community...and that they did! Each young person brought such heart, focus and energy to the Cultura Albert St stage and it was infectious. The smiling and super supportive crowd was on their feet dancing along with them in the sunshine. A joyful moment for the community to enjoy together.
There is much the young program participants have and want to share through this project, including celebrating and honoring their heritage and origin, the complexity and diversity of cultural experiences, and developing new roots and feeling at home in a new place. After the excitement of PAKO FESTA, the group is now turning its attention to further developing the piece, and preparing for their next performance at the Geelong Arts Centre March 28.

Jean de Florette is Claude Berri’s stunning adaptation of the novel written by the great Marcel Pagnol. City-dweller Jean de Florette (Gérard Depardieu) moves his family to the Provence countryside in the 1920s to forge a new life as a farmer. However greedy neighbour, Le Papet (Yves Montand), schemes with his simple-minded nephew, Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil), to bankrupt Jean de Florette so that they can acquire the land for themselves. They therefore set out to ensure the novice farmer never discovers an all-important natural spring on the property. Claude Berri, the film and its cast received numerous nominations for awards in every category in France and internationally; and won several of them, e.g. the César and National Academy of Cinema Awards in France, the BAFTA Awards in Great Britain and the Golden Globe Awards in the USA.

Manon des Sources is the sequel to the film Jean de Florette. It is an epic tale of love, passion, revenge and regret that unfolds with the power of a Greek or Shakespearean tragedy. Manon, Jean’s daughter, now 10 years older, lives with elderly squatters near Les Romarins in Provence, where her father’s farm was located. She is self-sufficient because they taught her how to live off the land and tend to her animals. Having acquired Jean’s farm, his old neighbours, Ugolin (Daniel Autieul) and César / Papet (Yves Montand), have built a profitable carnations business, using the spring that they ensured that Jean did not know existed. One day, Ugolin sees Manon (Emmanuelle Béart) bathing naked in the woods. He is very attracted to her and tries to get her to respond to his overtures. Naturally, she rejects him. Ugolin, however, becomes obsessed with her. Meanwhile, a school teacher, Bernard (Hippolyte Girardot) arrives in the village, and he and Manon fall in love. Eventually, Manon overhears some of the villagers talking about her father’s death. She realizes that people in the village knew about Ugolin’s and Papet’s deceit, but remained silent because of the prominence of Papet’s family in the village. Manon then plots revenge, not only on the dim-witted Ugolin and the scheming Papet, but on all the villagers. This film was nominated for several awards, e.g. Best Foreign Language Film at the 1988 BAFTA Awards in Great Britain; and Emmanuelle Béart won Best Supporting Actress at the 1987 César Awards in France.
