Chatham, Mass. — For the first time this postseason, the Chatham Anglers (4-1) are a loss away from their season ending. After a 5-3 Wareham Gatemen (5-0) win Saturday, Chatham must win and Monday for a championship. In Game 1 at Spillane Field, starting pitchers Austin Bergner (North Carolina) for Chatham and Ryan Garcia (UCLA) for Wareham held their opponents scoreless through four innings. The Gatemen broke through in the fifth, taking advantage of a Chatham throwing error. With the bases loaded and two out, Austin Shenton (Florida International) drove a fly ball deep into the right-center gap where Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State) gave chase. As he crashed into the outfield fence, the ball dropped out of his glove and all three runners came home. After Torkelson cut the lead with a nodoubt home run in the top of the seventh, Wareham added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Tristin English (Georgia Tech) gave the A’s life when he blasted a two-run, pinchhit home run in the ninth, but Chatham could not muster any more scoring. Facing elimination, Chatham will send its dugout leader to the mound — Alek Manoah (West Virginia). Manoah — a vocal source of energy and encouragement in the dugout when not pitching — will make his second start of the playoffs today. The righthander’s first start came in Game 2 of the East Division Series against the Harwich Mariners. He struggled to begin the game, allowing five runs in the second inning. But he immediately bounced back, retiring nine straight batters and finishing the game with a league playoffhigh 11 strikeouts. This year marks Chatham’s 18th Cape League Championship Series appearance of the modern era (since 1963) and first since 2001, a loss to Wareham.
