A MESSAGE FROM THE MCINTYRE FAMILY

It is fifty years since the introduction of Limousin’s into Australia and forty years since “Chateau” Limousins were founded. The breed has evolved over the years to an Australian style Limousin suitable for our vast conditions. With changing market conditions Chateau have included Black and Polled Limousins to combine with their traditional French Pure genetics.

In 1983 John & Bev commenced the “Chateau” Stud with the purchase of twelve females from the “Streamville” dispersal under the guidance of Yvonne King-Foster of Tanhill Limousins (UK) and Gavin Wright Snr (manager at Streamville). And over time have carefully selected cow lines to introduce into the herd.

Several of the lots offered still trace back to the original cow families purchased complemented by new genetics from International and Domestic A.I. Sires.

To celebrate and coincide with our 40th year, we will be offering Bulls as well as for the first time on-property Females & Genetic Lots into the Auction.

The sale will be conducted by our regular format with an open cry auction and interfaced with Auctions Plus to allow online bidding. All lots will be on display in Pens on sale day. We also welcome anyone that would like to view the animals prior to sale day to contact us to arrange a time.

Our draft of bulls includes several bulls with performance data the upper end of the breed in multiple traits for Stud Breeders and astute cattle producers though to those looking for shape and phenotype suitable for traditional vealer production to those targeting the heavy domestic and MSA programs.

The female lots will include Polled French Pure & Polled Black Un-Joined and Joined Heifers, Cows calving February/March, a selection of Embryo’s, along with the “Pick of the Spring Drop T calves” & “Pick of the Herd Flush”, which is the first time Chateau have offered this opportunity to hand select from the core of their breeding herd.

We would like to also take a moment to thank everyone that has supported us over the years and we look forward to continue working with everyone and this great breed with future generations.

Inspections from 10am sale day, or by appointment prior to sale.

AUCTION START TIME:

Auction will commence at 1:00pm

REGISTRATION:

Registration is required on Sale Day as a Bidders Number System will be in operation, therefore all prospective purchasers will be required to register prior to the commencement of the sale.

GST:

All lots are sold exclusive of GST. GST will be added onto the auction price upon invoicing.

SALE/VIDEO AUCTION:

Chateau Limousin carries a “J-BAS 6” status. All lots have been treated with 7 in 1, Multi-Min, Cydectin & Pesti Tested Negative.

TRANSFERS

All lots can be transferred with Limousin Australia to new owners on request. Please let the settling agent know on the day.

No deliveries/transport of purchases will be available on Sale day unless prior arrangement with vendors (Andrew 0438 755 810).

INSURANCE:

Purchase becomes the buyers responsibility at the fall of the hammer. While all care will be taken by the vendor we recommend that buyers insure any lots purchased with their local insurance team.

A HISTORY OF CHATEAU FEMALES……

A touch on just a few of our most constant and prolific cow families that feature not only in this years sale but over the last 40 years of “Chateau”. Several of females trace back to the first of the twelve purchases at “Streamvile Dispersal” in 1982, being from the “Olaf Jeulette” & “Olaf Hannah” cow lines, which are very prolific breeders that have consistently bred replacement females and sale bulls that have lasted four decades. Also included are descendants from live French imported cows being “Eclipse” & “Delicieuse” from the “Billabong Dispersal”. We were also fortunate enough to be able to introduce the “Tonka” cow line that was imported from “Tanhill, UK” and retained by “Tanhill Australia” that was one of two cow lines not offered in their record-breaking sale in 1988.

In the black department one of our high selling matrons would be progeny from “Kaludabah Black Opal B52”.

Being a daughter of the “Lloyds Black Polled Wunda” who has been highly influential in the Limousin breed in Australia.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR NEW PURCHASE

As our cattle are run in groups they are used to having other stock around and are never left in yards by themselves. Upon arrival please ensure that your purchase has company (a steer or cow) and plenty of food whilst they survey their new surroundings. Be aware that this is a new environment to them and will take a while to get use to both you and your farm.

UNDERSTANDING EBVs

An Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is an estimate of the genetic merit of that animal for each trait measured.

EBVs are provided for the following traits: Gestation Length: ranks sires for the time between conception and the birth of a calf. Shorter gestation is indicated by negative EBVs and longer by positive EBVs.

Birth Weight: indicates the genetic potential for birth weight. Positive EBVs indicate higher birth weights and negative EBVs indicate lower birth weights of progeny.

Milk: a key component of fast growth to weaning is the dam’s maternal performance. A bull with a high milk EBV should produce daughters which milk well. 200, 400 & 600 Day Weight: give us an estimation of the animal’s genetic potential for growth.

Docility: is expressed as the increase or decrease in the percentage of progeny that will be scored as docile (score 1 or 2). Positive EBVs indicate a higher proportion of progeny that will be scored as docile and negative EBVs indicate a lower percentage of progeny being scored as docile.

Comparing EBVs: The EBVs for Limousins cannot be compared with EBVs for animal of other breeds. They should be compared with the current average EBV for the Limousin breed.

Accuracies: are presented with each EBV and give an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal’s EBV as more information is analysed for that animal and its relatives.

THE SCURRED GENE IN CATTLE

Some polled cattle have scurs. Scurs are incompletely developed horns that are generally attached only to the skin. They range in size from tiny scab-like growths to large protrusions almost as large as horns. Therefore, polled cattle can be smooth-polled or scurred-polled (polled but expressing scurs).

Many breeders have the mistaken idea that scurs represent an error in transmitting the horned characteristic. That’s not the case. Scurred cattle should be classified as polled since they do have a polled gene. Only polled animals can express the scurred trait.
