After ending a tumultuous relationship with Mark, Tally looks forward to a simple, uncomplicated life with their daughter, Mel, and a new job teaching in tiny Plum Grove, Wisconsin. There, she faces the task of creating a new music program for the schools, dealing with the roadblocks of budget constraints and taxpayer concerns, and finds she has to win over not just the School Board, but the entire town.Through a humorous encounter, she meets Jake Miles, a handsome farmer who is also a member of the Board of Education, and finds herself falling for him, as well as for his three children. Thinking him a widower, Tally is shocked to discover that his ex-wife, Beth, is actually the glamorous superstar known as "Quinn." When Beth returns to Plum Grove to reclaim her children, Tally fears that Jake is once again falling for his ex. Still, she finds herself also drawn in by the charming star, who displays a very human core. To add to the complications, Mark decides to move to Plum Grove to be closer to his daughter and—Tally suspects—to try and rekindle their own relationship, As she struggles to fund her new music program, Tally finds some surprising allies and discovers the true meaning of small-town heart, along with some surprises that alter her perceptions of the definition of “family.”The Ex Factor looks at modern blended families with an optimistic eye and a wry sense of humor, suggesting that positivity and an open heart can, indeed, make beautiful music.
