Profile Hello, my name is Chase Sherman and I am a recent graduate of the University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. I am from Garden Valley, CA and my eventual goal is to become a licensed architect in California. I am interested in new and innovative technologies in architecture such as the emerging application of 3D printing, and I am eager to gain practical experience in the field.

Freelance Model Maker I worked with Workbench, an architecture firm in Santa Cruz, CA, to create a site model for one of their upcoming developments.

I adapted their digital model, 3d printed, and hand-finished the individual pieces of the model.

02/2023 - 05/2023

Student Research Assistant UC Berkeley I Assisted Professor Ron Rael in design and digital / physical representation of structures intedned to be printed of earth with a state of the art 3d printing robot.

Ceramic Fabrication Studio 2023 Semester 8 20th & Alabama St, San Francisco, CA

The goal of this project was to create a space for local ceramic artists to come together and practice their craft, as well as more public spaces for the display and sale of those pieces. A challenge of the studio was the materiality of the building, which features an extruded ceramic facade system that can open up horizontally to let light into certain areas. These moments also reference the idea of a seam in a ceramic slip cast mold, with skylights above each program space acting like pour holes which also allow light into the spaces. In this sense, each program space is its own mold, concealing from the outside the inner happenings, except for those places in the facade where that mold is pulled apart at the seam.

The Urban Institute 2022 Semester 6 16th St & Clay St, Oakland, CA

The purpose of this studio was to imagine a home for multiple diverse programs which are not usually found under the same roof. Public exhibition spaces, a public assembly lecture hall, as well as a workspace for urban planning and policy making would be accommodated in the design. The facade design for this project used different levels of transparency for the varying levels of public and private space, as well as general lighting needs in the case of the lecture hall. My project sought to take full advantage of the unusual shape of the lot by permeating the strong geometry throughout, and creating ample space for public interaction with those who would be making decisions in their city.

Site For ReconciliationDefective Block 2022 Semester 7 Conejos County, CO

This studio was in two parts - first to create a building block which was ‘defective’ and whose imperfections and contradictions would have to be worked around. The final design challenge of the studio was to create a site for reconciliation for Native American slavery by restoring and making an addition to the historic home of the ‘Indian Agent’ Lafayette Head. This site would have to have public gallery spaces, assembly rooms, archives, as well as spces for reflection. The defective block left openings and geometry which was used for circulation ramps and platforms in the main building itself. The block’s imperfections in aggregate allow for a penetration of light which was used in the site’s spaces for reflection.
