Welcome to this, the first Event Guide to be produced by the East Anglian Professional Forum.

In June of this year our diverse group of local tax and accounting practitioners, brought together by chance and mayhap, agreed to meet informally in order to explore ways in which both we, and our various representative bodies, might work together within East Anglia, for the mutual benefit of all.

It was clear from that first meeting that we had a great deal in common, not least the fact that we all faced broadly the same difficulties – an ever increasing burden of compliance, bewilderingly complex legislation and having to deal with government agencies on the brink of implosion.

It was against this backdrop that we agreed to meet regularly, albeit informally, in an attempt to develop a supportive network for all practitioners, providing for the exchange of ideas and the sharing, and hopefully the solution, of problems, either general or specific.

Our first project, for which there was unanimous support, was the production of a joint educational booklet, comprising the CPD programmes of all participant bodies, such that all events could be made available to all members and, at the risk of being repetitious this is the first edition.

Beyond this, we extend an open invitation to representative members of all/ any other bodies or groups associated with business or the professions, to join us since, as we all know, there is strength in numbers.

The Association of Taxation Technicians (Suffolk Branch) Mission statement

The Association’s mission is to advance public education in and promote the study of the administration and practice of taxation.

To do this it: • provides through examination a qualification “Taxation Technician” for persons engaged in tax compliance work; • runs residential courses and one-day conferences; • publishes (jointly with the CIOT) the monthly journal Tax Adviser; • issues annotated copies of Finance Acts and other technical material; • liaises with and makes submissions to the Revenue authorities and government on the improvement and simplification of taxation compliance issues and relevant tax legislation; • maintains standards of professional conduct for members; • provides eligibility to take the examination of the Chartered Institute of Taxation.

Membership

ATT qualified and you will also need a minimum of 2 years', either part-time or full-time, working in taxation or in any other occupation which entails an element of UK taxation and be a fit and suitable person for admission. You will need to send a selfcertified statement of your working experience.

The Suffolk branch is shared with the local CIOT.

Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (North Essex and Suffolk Branch) About the Society

The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) is the leading worldwide professional body for practitioners in the fields of trusts, estates and related issues. STEP members help families plan their long-term financial future, facilitating good stewardship and financial planning across future generations. STEP members also help families comply with the often complex law and tax rules surrounding trusts, estates and inheritance.

Membership

To qualify as a STEP member there are various professional examination routes that can be taken whether you are a lawyer or an Accountant/Tax Practitioner. There is also a qualified practitioner route to join as an alternative.

The Local Branch

The Suffolk and North Essex Branch of STEP has just over 70 members. The branch provides local based seminars and presentations covering a range of topics. The branch keeps members up to date with all STEP matters generally.

The Association of International Accountants (AIA) was founded in the UK in 1928 as a professional accountancy body and from conception has promoted the concept of ‘international accounting’ to create a global network of accountants in over 85 countries worldwide.

AIA is recognised by the UK Government as a Recognised Qualifying Body for statutory auditors under the Companies Act 2006, across the European Union under the Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications directive and as a Prescribed Body under the Companies (Auditing and Accounting) Act 2003 in the Republic of Ireland. The Institute of Financial Accountants was established in 1916 and is the oldest body of non Chartered Accountants in the world. It represents members and students in more than 80 countries, providing qualifications for those wishing to work in financial management and accountancy and continuous professional development for qualified Financial Accountants. The Institute sets technical and ethical standards for its members. The Institute is an Associate Member of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) - the global body setting professional standards and regulating accountants around the world.

The ethos of the IFA is to put small and medium businesses(SMEs) first. These businesses are the life blood of the national economy, employing over half of Britain’s private sector workforce.

Today the IAB is the leading UK and international professional body for those providing bookkeeping and related accounting services to small businesses. Through its broad range of Ofqual accredited qualifications and its CPD activities, the IAB aims to meet an extensive range of financial skills needs of young people and adults and to provide essential business skills for those starting or developing a small business.

Interest in the IAB is ever increasing and it continues to grow both in the UK and internationally, with members and students now in five figures and spread across approximately 60 countries.

Membership

The grade of membership awarded is dependent on the level of examination attained. Additionally, two years appropriate work experience is required for those aspiring to Fellow status.

Federation of Tax Advisers The FTA aims to provide professional organisation support for tax advisers in practice through a code of conduct and disciplinary processes and to provide the public with confidence when dealing with a member of the organisation.

In 2006 the FTA introduced an exam qualification and since that time new applicants are required to sit and pass the tax exam in order to qualify at associate member level.
