COMMENCEMENT– Saturday, MAY 11, 10:00am

It was a bright, balmy, cloudy day as 37 Mill Springs Academy graduates made their last walk as high school students in front of the Lower/ Middle School Building to the Tweetie Moore Student Activity Center for their commencement exercises. Teachers and administrators lined the sidewalk to welcome the students with handshakes, hugs, applause and cheers. Led up the hill by Processional Marshall (and Upper School Assistant Principal) Jaime Gutierrez, the graduates were greeted by about 500 family members, staff members and students coming together in the gym to celebrate their wonderful achievements. Patrick Rose and his tech crew transformed our gymnasium into a stylish and formal venue to feature the accomplishments of our graduates. Former student and KSU Freshman Sammy Mishkin provided processional music on the keyboard, and then a Color Guard of Eagle Scouts, Sophomore Drew Maichle and Freshman Luke McCoin, presented the colors. Senior Nick Tate sang a rousing and melodious national anthem. Board of Trustees Chair Bruce Clayton touchingly welcomed the audience to the festive event and Graduate Siobhan Hightower offered the invocation. With so much talent in the Senior class, the audience was treated to a selection from “Jekyll & Hyde” Musical by Jack Hurtsellers and Nick Tate. Our guest speaker was MSA ‘13 alumni Austin Coleman with a set plan to transition from MSA into college and life beyond our rarefied fields.

Upper School Assistant Principal and Grand Marshal Jaime Gutierrez.

This year’s Graduation was punctuated by some very dear heartfelt moment, including Band Director Elizabeth Regas’s tribute to Headmaster Robert Moore, whose presence was definitely felt. Elizabeth then led a small band group, comprised of Seniors Kaitlin Bolander, Garrett Cutchin, Andrew Story and Photos by Shilpee Kathuria Jones, Miles Kirby and Nick Tate, into a funky rendition of the “Pink Panther.” Michael Healey and Christopher Walker were named the first “Alpha & Omega” Graduates for having been at MSA for the duration of their school experience. Valedictorian Madison Hahn spoke honestly and personally: her speech filled all our hearts with pride and joy. Acting Headmaster Bruce Clayton, Program Director Dr. Robert Slayden, Upper School Principal Cynthia Traylor, and Communication Arts Principal Chelsea Michelson presented medallions and special awards to the graduates. The AJC Cup was awarded by Counselor Brandi Smallwood to Christopher Walker. Then the big moment arrived: students received their diplomas. Shilpee Kathuria, Senior Research & Composition teacher read each student’s name, while each administrator gave each graduate a hearty congratulations: Cynthia and Chelsea moved the tassels of the graduates. It was certainly an emotional and moving event! Each graduating class selects an Alumni Ambassador to keep in touch with faculty and all the members of his/her class for future events. This year’s Alumni Ambassador, selected by her classmates, is Jin Butler! Miles Kirby, Alli Kogoy and Tommy Kwon

Graduate Emily Hyman closed the ceremony by delivering the Benediction and Sammy Mishkin played the recessional. Afterwards, graduates, families and friends gathered in the Upper School Great Room for a catered reception, cherished moments and final good-byes.

Baccalaureate is traditionally a more toned-down event than Graduation. Held at the Birmingham United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, students reflect and share their experiences about their memories at MSA, while Faculty members acknowledge individual students for their artistic and scholastic achievements.
