MSA Bulletin Spring Concert:

Compiled By Shilpee Kathuria

What IS Everyone Doing Over the Summer?

May 8-9, 2019

By Elizabeth Regas The lights are low. A hush falls over the crowd. Two young men, fearless in stance, brandish their gleaming Saxophones like musical warriors heeding the call to an unexplained battle. Tensions are running high. As the existential plane pulls taut, the silence is finally broken by the driving rhythm of the drums, counting the heroes in with relentless speed. And so it begins… The opening sax line to “Careless Whisper” by George Michael. An MSA Band concert is more than just a few familiar tunes performed by our finest musical artists. An MSA Band concert is the culmination of the mostly figurative, occasionally literal blood, sweat, and tears shed by those who are daring enough to step outside of themselves and contribute to a greater creation. The moment is fleeting, but the encounter lasts forever. Garrett Cutchin and Miles Kirby bring Wham! to life in practice on their saxes.

PROM 2019 On Thursday, April 18, Mill Springs Academy held its annual prom in the gymnasium. The theme for this year was “A Midnight In Paris” and there were models of the Eiffel Tower, sparkling apple cider (under the guise of looking like champagne), and berets were handed out to students as they walked in through the doors. The disc jockey played great music throughout the night, and there were many group dances including the Macarena and the Cha Cha slide. Be sure to give special thanks to Elke Silva, Lisa Imsand, and all of the students and teachers who helped to take the time to organize, arrange, and attend prom, as it was the best one yet. Is Nihilism Degrading Modern Culture? Nihilism is a philosophical school of thought that revolves around the rejection of all religious and moral ideas based off the notion that all things are intrinsically meaningless. A pretty hefty statement to make about life isn’t it? This ideology has taken off in recent years due to an ever growing increase in those who are areligious. And with that begs the question: Is that a detrimental attitude to hold toward life? IS it damaging modern art, culture, and life over all?

By Garrett Cutchin By Garrett Cutchin

enjoying life. I believe that true meaning in life comes from the interaction one forms with the world around him or her, with the connection with people, music, and art that actually means something. It doesn’t come from a rejection of everything that society holds close to oneself. To do so is to reject life itself.

It seems like nowadays nihilism is the hot new philosophical movement for the younger generations mainly due to a majority of them straying away from traditional religion. Without a traditional belief in a god or any sort of given purpose, it may be logical to come to the conclusion that life has no inherent purpose.

They instead try to take away meaning from what other people find meaning from. They seek out things that tear down tradition and modern axioms. Postmodern art is defined by this desire: What started out as a humorous culture of artists making fun of the pretentious art world has now become that level of pretentious. An incomprehensible mess of abstract insulations that all amount to a vague rebellion toward a culture that died before the great war. This art and these people breed an attitude that life Is just whatever. An attitude that doesn’t value human contribution or nature. Instead it complains, unsatisfied with life at a core level.

I believe life has no inherent meaning. However, that doesn’t mean that all things are meaningless to us as people. To surround oneself with things and that exclusively try to reject real meaning in life is a rejection toward

While based in logic, many people have seen this lack of a clearly defined purpose as ample opportunity to live a life devoid of meaning. They allow the excuse of “nothing matters anyway” to avoid pursuing things that traditionally give life some semblance of meaning. Art, music, whatever it may be. It is a shield of apathy, an intellectual’s version of a teenager saying that they don’t care. While it may seem cool and laid back, it is simply an advanced version of laziness, of a desire to not improve oneself or find any actual meaning in the world.

Minecraft: Ageless Nostalgia Minecraft for those of you who don’t know is a popular game, where the player can create a world where the purpose of the game is to mine blocks and materials to build tools, houses, defeat monsters, and survive in the world they created, or the player can create a world with limitless materials and an ability to build whatever they want. The game world is entirely made of blocks, everything: the animals and creatures, the environment, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

What makes this game so special to so many of our childhoods? Well, many 2000’s kids grew up

playing Minecraft as children with our friends, having funny moments laughing at your friend when he dies in a dumb way or exploring dark caves with your friends looking for materials, or building massive structures in creative mode with friends. Minecraft has inspired creativity and fun for the kids of the 2000’s and parts of the game are used in memes by the same generation. I would argue the game grew our generation’s creativity and motor skills with it’s building feature and appealed to our natural urge to explore with it’s vast world map and hundreds of hidden underground tunnels to explore. Because of this Minecraft has appealed to us a lot. In conclusion, most of my generation grew up with this iconic game and no matter if we still like it or not we cannot deny the impact it had on our childhood.

Do We Live in a Clown World?

By Jordan Rothberg

S U E S

“A fire broke out backstage in a theater. The clown came out to warn the public; they thought it was a joke and applauded. He repeated it; the acclaim was even greater. I think that’s just how the world will come to an end: to the general applause of wits who believe it’s a joke.” -Søren Kierkegaard, 19th Centur y Danish Philosopher & Social Critic That is a gist of the “Clown World.” One can switch in the clown for major pieces of our world such as religion, media, government, etc. and laugh at the absurdity of how these groups trick us. The Clown World itself is also an imagery, specifically of the well-known frog Pepe in a rainbow wig and a red clown nose going “honk honk,” like a clown. However, how could something as simple as a clown frog and a saying such as “clown world order” trigger so many? This is the plan of the trolls, proving that anything can become a hate symbol to “progressive” people if they use it enough, including Clown Pepe. Their previous plan was using the “okay” hand symbol ( ), which lead to people calling it a symbol of white power, which was also the previous “interpretation” of Pepe.

MSA Baseball 2019 The 2019 baseball season has come to a close and it was as exciting as ever. The team is coached by Greg Bodeep, Phil Hanson, and head coach Brad Smallwood. Coach Gr eg and Coach Phil took up the reigns and pushed the team throughout the season like any good coach would. The team began practicing in mid-February and had their first game in early March. The team played through various conditions that included freezing cold and blazing hot temperatures. Even though they didn’t always win they still played hard and didn’t stop fighting until the end. This year’s team consisted of Jacob Beck, Aaron Breitkopf,

MSA Track 2019

By Avery Terpstra

The track team this year had a great ratio of girl to boy. There were five girls; that included Ella Jensen, Avery Terpstra, Emily Suarez, Megan Suarez, and Ana Cristina Fields. We had ten boys; they were Charles Jefferson, Matt Campbell, Jody Cleveland, Quinton Day, Jacobi Garrett, Sam Henslee, Kyle Hessel, Christian Kelm, Zach Smith, and Harrison Steen. We had two incr edible and committed coaches, Angela White and Lisa Imsand. Every athlete worked hard even when things got tough. Throughout the season personal records were set, school records broken, and memories made to last a lifetime. Out of the 15 athletes on the team, ten made it to state. All the girls went for the relay, Boys team “A” went for a relay as well. Jacobi Garrett ran the 100m dash, placing 6th. Jacobi also competed in the long jump, placing first, and the triple jump, also getting first. In both events, Jacobi was one inch away from beating the state record. Jody Cleveland set the school record in the 800 meter dash, placing 8th in the state. He also competed in the 1600 meter dash, placing 6th. Our captain, Jacobi, gave some advice. He said “when your legs can’t run anymore, run with your heart.” Angela had this to say, “We had an awesome track and field season, which ended with 10 athletes going to State! Lisa and I are so proud of our entire team! Special recognition to Jacobi Garrett (graduating senior) and Jodi Cleveland who each broke school records in their individual events this season! We are looking forward to another great season next year!” Way to go MSA track team!!!

Notre Dame Catastrophe

By Eli Musgrave

D G E

On April 15, 2019 the Notre Dame Cathedral was engulfed in a blaze and nearly burned to the ground. The Cathedral was built sometime between the 12th and 14th century and has always been considered an architectural beauty. It was built in a gothic style and it is one of the first examples of the use of flying buttresses, and the Cathedral features numerous statues and stained glass windows. Many people know the Cathedral because of the provenance that has been associated with it. It has also been used in many different forms of entertainment such as TV and movies. Probably the most famous example is the novel The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This novel was written by Victor Hugo

and depicts the life of a hunchback named Quasimodo who was feared by the town’s people because they thought of him as a monster and found sanctuary in Notre Dame. It was adopted into a movie by Disney in 1996 much to the viewing enjoyment of the public. The fire started around 6:20 pm when the first fire alarm went off. Another alarm went off about 20 minutes later. The staff reportedly did checks after the first alarm went off but found nothing unusual. The fire then erupted and started to consume the oak-framed roof. The fire then spread and consumed one of the historic spires and caused it collapse. After the fire was put out people immediately wanted to investigate but the structure was not safe and secure. It took 10 days for the structure to be secured so the Milk.

first investigators to begin to investigate. The cause of the fire was questioned. The police interviewed all the guests, workers of the cathedral, and renovation workers about what happened before the fire started and so far have come up with no promising leads. Investigators believe the cause to be a short circuit so they have and are continuing to search the wreckage for remains of cables, wires, lights, or any remains of electronics. There was a report of some renovation workers smoking on the metal scaffolding even though there is a smoking ban on the sight. However, the police have ruled that a cigarette butt might have started the fire that destroyed the cathedral’s oak roof. As of now, the most definitive cause of the fire is officially thought to be electrical. Spring 2019

Founder of WikiLeaks Arrested

N O W L

By Garrett Cutchin

E KOLO.com

On April 11 2019, Julian Assange, founder and director of WikiLeaks (a nonprofit that publishes classified information provided by anonymous sources) was arrested in Knightsbridge, London by British authorities for crimes of espionage and computer related crimes committed in the U.S. in 2012. An indictment was issued then for his crimes but were foiled when he was able to find asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. However, the Ecuadorian embassy recently renounced their asylum toward him due to his recent releasing of articles that go against Ecuadorian governmental interests, as well as recent issues with his behavior within the embassy. Julian Assange is the founder and director of WikiLeaks, an organization known for revealing sensitive information from governments and private organizations. These current charges of espionage stem from a series of secret American military documents provided by the former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning. Ms. Manning was convicted in 2013 for leaking said documents and sentenced with 35 years in prison, though she only served about seven due to former President Barrack Obama commuting the remainder of her sentence. Spring 2019

Many journalists, free speech activists, and generally curious eyes have come to the defense of Assange stating that the information he published needed to be known by the public. A woman going by the name Sylv stated (in reference to WikiLeaks and Assange) “[w]hat they publish and why they publish it and because they uncover government secrets and we have the right know what is going on. Sri Lanka Bombed on Easter Sunday On Easter Sunday this year, Sri Lankan churches were bombed in three major tourist capitols. Those include Kochchikade capitol of Colombo, Negombo, and Batticaloa. A series of eight bombs were set off among many different churches and luxury hotels. They are thought to be set off by many religious terrorist groups. The bombings took place in major tourist cities, which has since affected tourism; the cities need tourism for money. These bombings are said to be the deadliest violence in Sri Lanka since their civil war that ended a decade ago.

G E

Photo By CNN- What was found still in pieces after the smoke cleared up

There were been about 73 suspects under investigation involved in the six bombs that were set off, between three churches and three hotels. All of those involved have either been arrested or are dead. Those bombers contributed to the 253 that are dead and the hundreds more that are injured. Of the injured, almost 40 foreigners are dead. Including those from the United States, Britain, some Danish citizens, Turkish citizens, and those of an Indian or Portuguese descent. They were killed by religion extremists that targeted popular places of the public and where they knew tourists would be.

Some of those carrying the bombs were more obvious than others. One man was stopped at the door of a church by two guards, because he looked too suspicious. He wasn’t wearing the proper attire and he had two big back backs; he claimed he wanted to film the service. This man killed many children that were in attendance for Sunday school. Another man at a different church was invited into the church and was told when the service was to begin. He had a lot of space to do damage, as he was in the Photo by BBC- A mom and daughter hugcenter point of the church. ging after learning about the faithful deaths

Days and weeks after the initial attack, more threats came in. Churches were closed for a few weeks due to fear, and when they did finally open, not many civilians were there to pray. Schools were closed for around two weeks. When the government owned schools opened again, many students stayed home because they were scared.

Since Easter, there have been more bombings, and even more threats. Tensions are very high in Sri Lanka, as everyone is in constant fear of more bombing occurring. Tourism is struggling and Sri Lanka relies on it. Sri Lanka is still trying to come to terms with what happened and they are still grieving the losses and horror that took place. Special Investigation Clears Trump

By Peter Cook

N O

ABC News

Ever since the election of Donald Trump in 2016, the idea of Russian collusion has dominated American political discussion. The first allegations of collusion came on September 22, 2016 from Senator Dianne Feinstein and House representative Adam Schiff, two top Democrats on the Senate and House Intelligence Committee. In May 2017, a special counsel was appointed by Rod Rosenstein which took over an alr eady existing FBI investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government. This counsel was called after the president was accused of obstructing justice after he fired FBI director James Comey. Robert Mueller was chosen as the special counsel and was granted the authority to not only head the investigation, but to also explore, “any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigaTrump proclaiming no collusion after the report tion.” was released. L E D G E

Over the course of two years, Mueller’s investigation has revealed numerous criminal actions committed by officials connected to the Trump campaign, however, neither the president or his family have been connected to these crimes and most of the charges did not even involve election interference. The most notable indictments were that of Paul Manafort (Trump’s campaign manager) and Richard Gates on charges of conspiracy against the USA, conspiracy to launder money, false statements, and failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts. Michael Cohen , formerly the personal attorney for Trump, was also sentenced to prison time for giving false statements before the An exhausted senator at the Senate. However, while it was claimed that the president had instructed Senate Intelligence Committee him to lie, Muller quickly debunked that claim as false. The president hearing. and his supporters have repeatedly dubbed the probe, “a partisan witch hunt,” while Democrats have proclaimed that it is, “a matter of national security.” On Sunday, March 22, 2019, the details of the full report was released by Attorney General William Barr’s letter to lawmaker s at Capitol Hill. To summarize, the final conclusions stated that Mueller did not have any evidence that the president or anyone in his campaign had engaged in collusion with Russian Officials. It still remains unclear how much of the report, if any will be released to Congress or the public. On April 18, 2019, a redacted version of the report was released to the public and it completely clears the president of any suspicion of collusion, however, it does not clear him of money laundering and tax evasion. However, it should be noted that it does not recommend any further indictments either. On a final note, Trump consistently voiced his support for releasing the report completely unredacted to Congress and the public at large as he was confident in the report’s findings.

Paul Manafort was sentenced to four years for fraud and pled guilty for conspiracy.
