Bulletin Diversity Inclusion Awareness Day By Emily Van Aken This year’s Diversity Day, held on March 8, was a wonderful event where the students at MSA were able to learn about many different diversity topics. Many people helped in making this day possible, including Teachers Nellie Jackson & Eric Khong, as well as students Casey Purser, Nate Foster, Emily Kane, Emily Van Aken, and many more. The students and teachers were very excited to participate and witness the many different seminars, and hope to make Diversity Day just as amazing for next year!

GISA Regional & State Lit Fest Results The Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) sponsors Literary & Music Competitions, generally referred to as “Lit Fest” for all independent schools in the state of Georgia once per year. These schools are divided into five regions to compete and are classified by school size. Mill Springs Academy competes in our region with the largest schools. Typically, about five other schools in our region choose to compete at Lit Fest: this year, on March 5, that included Atlanta Girls School, Trinity Christian, Heritage Prep, and Bethlehem Christian, as well as Holy Spirit Prep (which hosts the event).

All competitors represented Mill Springs well. As the Coaches, we are pleased to announce this year’s results. REGION Results in Black STATE (3/20) Gordon State College Results in Red

Catch Me If You Can “Catches” the Audience Spectacularly! The Mill Springs Academy theater department has done it again! This year’s musical, Catch Me If You Can, was a resounding success. From its amazing choreography to inspired performances by Collins Losson and Henry Wallace ever y element was excellent. To gain a better understanding of the production, we interviewed one of the actresses in the musical, Addison Monette, who also recently played the female lead in the critically acclaimed short film: Rough Cut.

Communication Arts: What’s Better than Bonnie Palooza? By Emily Kane

Winter-Spring 2018

Every year, the Communication Arts community hosts a massive week of festivities to commemorate the birth of beloved history teacher Bonnie Bergstresser. The party, dubbed “Bonnie Palooza,” has a new headlining event every day, with activities ranging from a Pi Day celebration to a reenactment of the death of Julius Caesar to a Field Day. This year, the carousing lasted from March 13 to March 16. Typically, the schedule includes a full five days of partying; but unfortunately, this year the Monday of Bonnie Palooza landed on a school-wide break day, so it was cut one day short sadly. This year, the week kicked off on Tuesday with a Tie Dye Day, where students and faculty brought in white shirts so they could be “Tie Dyed to Amazingness.” On March 14, the actual date of birth for Bonnie, students are encouraged to bring in their favorite storebought or homemade pies in recognition of Pi Day. After lunch, a buffet-style lineup of pies is brought out and students and teachers alike enjoy a selection of treats. In previous years, other activities have also taken place on this day, such as a Pi Digit Reciting Competition, complete with a 3D-printed Pi trophy awarded to the winner. The next day, March 15, is the Ides of March. Students and teachers set the Roman mood by bringing in bedsheets to wrap around them as togas. A “Caesar” is also selected from either the CommArts Level L’s or the seniors, and the Level L’s organize a community-wide “killing of Caesar.” The previous year, Caesar was “killed” by water guns; this year, the students opted to kill Caesar by

Milk.

throwing marshmallows at him. Our Caesar this year, senior Trevor Bush, brought out all the dramatic stops for the community. After a dramatic wail of “Et Tu, Brutus,” he collapsed to the ground under the heavy weight of betrayal and marshmallows. Friday was a field day where students participated in relays and team-building activities whilst adorned with their Tie Dye shirts from earlier in the week.

M

U S T A N G S

“I find it fun, although I’m a bit confused as to why there’s a week-long celebration [for a birthday],” Kaitlyn Bolander, CommArts junior, jokingly responded when asked for a comment. Bonnie, on the other hand, has very different views on Bonnie Palooza; she hopes to make it even bigger and more extravagant if given the opportunity. “I would love to add a field trip into it,” she said, when asked about plans for the Palooza in future years, “[It could be] a service field trip so we can give back to the community.” When asked about the overall community benefit of Bonnie Palooza throughout the two years that it’s been hosted, Bonnie replied, “It is a great way to break up the spring semester without interrupting classes. It’s a great team building week that bring the whole community together.” Bonnie Palooza shows no signs of slowing down in momentum, and we can expect great things from this week in years in come!

Yearbook Staff

So is it rare that one event can be filled with so much joy, excitement, love, and controversy at the same time. Wednesday February 14 was ValenFrom left to right: Nick Tate, Jack Hurtsellers, Collins Losson, and Bryce Zimmerman singing tine’s Day and for open mic. Mill Springs held a party organized by the Level L’s. Along with candy, flowers, and heart shaped decorations, the Level L’s had, for the second year, an open mic and a jar of Hershey Kisses contest. The open mic included students and teachers and ranged from a duet with Bonnie Bergstresser and Keith

Muma, to an extreme and controversial singing of Avril Lavigne by Jack Abram and Garrett Cutchin. Along with the successful open mic, the Level L’s held a contest to guess the amount of kisses in a jar, and in a clear example of the inner circle’s influence in the Mill Springs government, Assistant Principal Jaime Gutierrez, last year ’s winner, won the contest for the second time in two years! While the controversies were numerous, the Level L’s help another great party for Valentine’s Day and you could certainly feel the love in the air!

#MeToo Builds Momentum

Every movement has a purpose and the #MeToo movement is no exception. To some, the movement is a sign of progress for justice. To others, it’s a witch hunt with little proof to back it up. The #MeToo movement is described by its followers as a way forward towards speaking out against sexual harassment. It began after allegations from some of the biggest stars came out against Hollywood mogul, Harvey Weinstein. These allegations led to many other prominent men being subjected to sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape claims. While many of these claims lack evidence, it is common for

Milk.

many victims to come forward at once making the claims more trustworthy. So, with so many claims at once, why do some think it’s a witch hunt? Well, many of the people being accused are beloved by the public. This love makes it difficult for people to believe that the person accused did such an awful thing. A strong example is O. J. Simpson: many couldn’t imagine how someone who they loved so much could have been a murderer. But, at some point, you have to look at the evidence of so many women coming out. While it is hard for us to see our idols in a negative light, when many brave people speak out, it is hard to ignore. While not every claim is accurate, if enough of them are made, we need to accept #MeToo movement is something to be taken seriously.

Time May Be Up for #MeToo

S S

So, the movement is starting to become disillusioning. Many companies are so scared that many men are fired if there is a claim against them. There are many claims that are not even investigated. There are many careers being ruined because of the movement. Actor Liam Neeson related the story of his friend and colleague that patted a girl on the shoulder to be comforting at a time when she was let go from her job. Months later he got an email saying that he was being accused of sexual assault by the same women. Unfortunately, these incidents may seem rare, but they are not. The movement has also not yet defined what sexual harassment is. Is cat-calling sexual harassment? Is touching someone on the shoulder now sexual harassment? The #MeToo movement also claims to want to provide women with equal rights to men. Women have the same exact rights as men and in come cases, women actually have more rights than men, particularly in cases of child custody. Women also have the right to be caregivers in a divorce more than men. When a couple gets divorced, the court is more likely to assume that the mother should be the primary caregiver.

U

Youtube.com

E S

Hollywood condemns and destroys those whose opinions differ: acclaimed director Terry Gilliam makes headlines. PerezHilton.com

The #MeToo movement started the same way Black Lives Matter did, with everybody coming together for a single cause. With BLM, that cause was to show police brutality against minorities. The MeToo cause was to show just how much sexual harassment and sexual assault is going on in Hollywood. Soon, both movements saw people join that did not help their cause. For the #MeToo movement, this is actress Rose McGowan. Over the course of the movement, Rose McGowan has been very vocal about what has been going on and she also does not seem to care that other people are hurt. Actress Alyssa Milano has been supportive and has said that Rose McGowan is very brave. Unfortunately, McGowan has said that “She (Milano) is a lie. McGowan also claimed that Milano is benefiting off the movement and that is the only reason she is supporting it.

Rose McGowan; Alyssa Milano.

xltribe.com

In some cases, this movement has grown into something that is biased into thinking that men are the issue. I believe that everyone should be treated fairly and have the same rights. I also believe that there are women who do get treated unfairly for being a women. In the end though, we should come together and quit with all the nonsense.

My Bloody Valentine: A Franchise of Wasted Potential

By Jack Abram

Of the holiday themed slasher movies I have viewed, My Bloody V alentine (1981), and its remake, My Bloody V alentine 3D (2009), are the most conflicting. While I do enjoy the aesthetic, attention to making sure the surrounding plotline of each is suitably Valentine’s Day themed, and creative character design for the killer, neither film feels like anything special. My Bloody Valentine (1981) is basically an entirely standard slasher movies notable only for being made in Canada, a unique killer (a vengeful victim of a mining accident), and having nine minutes of footage cut by the MPAA for excessive gore. Perhaps if the footage hadn’t been cut, the film would be noteworthy.

to emulate the mystery aspects of Scream (1996). It wastes the time between these scenes that advance the mystery angle of the plot by introducing some filler kill scenes. I’d describe them here, but it would only serve to kill the brain cells of our readers. This is one of few movies I actually feel I am dumber for having watched. This film is not even bad in way where it is enjoyable in a fashion similar to The Room or Sleepaway Camp. So, while I am usually a fan of holiday themed slasher movies, I cannot recommend the My Bloody V alentine series.

L

I F E S T Y L E

My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009), however, is perhaps the most stupid movie I have ever seen. Only the opening sequence could really be described as being a true slasher movie, with the rest being a dumb plotline that tries and fails Photo courtesy of wallpapersin4k.net

Visitors will want to jump headfirst into one of Baha Mar’s five pools.

Baha Mar is the newest of the Caribbean’s luxury resorts.

Baha Mar: A Quieter Island Paradise For decades, Nassau’s resort scene had only one true name. Visitors to the Bahamian capital invariably spent their vacation at the Atlantis Paradise Island, which is always teeming with thousands of youngsters there to enjoy the countless number of waterslides and pools. Those searching for a more subdued environment would have to look elsewhere for tropical getaways. The Baha Mar is the newest asset to the Nassau skyline. Guests enter the resort by driving through a massive gate, where a bellhop greets them and leads them to their hotel room. From there, the adventure truly begins. Virtually every guest makes a beeline past the slot machines and card table of the resort’s casino to enjoy the Bahamian coastline. The tropical sun is always shining in a perfectly blue sky and the waters, located at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Due to its narrowness, one could walk end-to-end across the beach in a matter of minutes. When one jumps into the sapphire-blue water, they are instantly greeted by the most refreshing bath Mother Nature can provide. Although the beach is Baha Mar’s prime attraction, it is by no means the only thing to do. After enjoying the Caribbean sun, Vegas-style gambling awaits visitors. For Baha Mar’s most exclusive guests, the card-table experience is incomparable. Gold-felted tables fill the private rooms for the guests referred to as high rollers. A friendly and vibrant dealer supervises each blackjack game. A minifridge is always stocked with the player’s favorite drinks, and a speaker is always playing the player’s favorite jams. There is something for the more laid back and sophisticated traveler at Baha Mar.

MSA tennis capped off its AAC season by traveling to Cottage for a series of matches. Several Mustangs competed in the boys’ singles bracket. Sean Martin won his first match 8-4 over Andrew Dorsey of Cottage. Nick Kiely took the boys’ singles title by defeating fellow Mustang Richard Hall 8-5 in the final. This result qualifies Kiely for state. Richard Hall and Nick Kiely became AAC boys’ double champions by defeating Sasha Torri and Andrew Donaldson of Cottage eight games to three. Alli Kogoy prevailed over Cottage’s Natalie Yager in the girls’ singles final 8-1. When asked about her thoughts of the team’s season, Coach Vaidehi Rallapalli said that the Mustangs “had a very busy but a fun and wonderful tennis season in the midst of cold weather and some pleasant and sunny days.”

MSA Baseball Wrap-Up 2018 By Connor Samsky

This season was another successful one for Mill Springs baseball. The Mustangs entered the AAC Championship with a 2-3 record. The year began with MSA suffering a 12-1 defeat to Cottage. The Mustangs followed this with a 16-0 loss against Cottage. The Mustangs overcame these setbacks with consecutive 20-5 and 1-0 victories against Howard. Taylor Mallady helped in the former game by scoring three runs. MSA finished the regular season in second place to qualify for the AAC Championship against Cottage, where the Mustangs lost 14 to 3. “This year was a year full of improvement. Controversial Republican candidate Joe Arpaio is a favorite among “America First” Republicans.

Incumbent Jeff Flake has declined to run in 2018, leaving his seat up for grabs.

Senate Race Heats Up in Arizona Across the country, millions of Americans will go to the polls this November to vote on the future of the Senate in midterm elections. Although each race is close, no seat is more competitive than the one up for grabs in the state of Arizona. Incumbent Jeff Flake announced that he would not seek reelection during a speech on the Senate floor in October of 2017. Although several candidates have put in their names, the race has unofficially come down to three candidates, and each will have an uphill battle towards the Capitol. Kyrsten Sinema is the pr esumptive Democr atic nominee and cur rent Congresswoman from Arizona’s ninth district, which covers some of Phoenix’s eastern suburbs. A staunch centrist, Sinema has championed both liberal and conservative causes. Sinema takes the side of the right on cutting business regulations and lowering taxes. However, she sides with the left by supporting Planned Parenthood and opposing a repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Sinema has an excellent chance of flipping deeply Republican Arizona to the Democrats. Although the Democratic primary is a mere formality, there are two challengers for the Republican nomination. Establishment and moderate Republicans favor Martha McSally. Like Sinema, McSally currently serves in Congress, representing Arizona’s second district. McSally is a typical conservative, supporting the repeal of Obamacare and supporting the Republican tax plan passed in December. However, she crossed party lines by criticizing President Donald Trump’s comments on a leaked Access Hollywood tape in October 2016, when he was the party nominee in that year’s presidential election.
