Introduction

W

elcome to the latest edition of our FUNdraising magazine. Our medical team in the Chartwell Unit are always under pressure due to an ever increasing workload. To help them we have agreed to fund an additional Acute Cancer Nurse Specialist. The support is for two years and we hope that patients and staff will notice a difference. We have also agreed to fund a new high performance scanner for the Breast Cancer Team. This state of the art ultrasound machine will allow enhanced precision imaging, more effective diagnosis and monitoring, and increased capacity and efficiency providing a definite improvement to patient care. Our support for Children’s services continues to expand enabling ongoing enhancements to facilities and equipment in the Paediatric Oncology Units that we support along with the life-line of Patient and Family Support Groups and financial assistance packages. To reflect the expansion of our activities the children’s arm of our charity will now be known as The Chartwell Children’s Cancer Trust. Going forward the money that you help us raise will be allocated to the hospitals and appeals we are supporting according to your preference. We have an exciting year ahead of us and many ambitious challenges to meet, so thank you for your continued support. Wishing you all a healthy, happy and successful year.

Mr M. W. Douglas The Chartwell Cancer Trust Room 1, Aileen McHugo Building Westmore Green Tatsfield Kent TN16 2AG

Princess Royal University Hospital Farnborough Common Orpington Kent BR6 8ND 01689 863000

14th January 2019 To Michael, Natalie, Bobby and The Chartwell Cancer Trust Team, The Breast Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital is eternally grateful to The Chartwell Cancer Trust for the donation of an Ultrasound machine for our cancer services. Over the years the Breast Unit has continued to serve the local community very efficiently and effectively but the number of patients in the unit has increased considerably which has put increased pressure on the Radiology department. We aim to see all our patients as soon as possible in our 1 stop clinic and in spite of the increase in the number of patients seen there has been no diagnostic breeches. However, recently we have implemented a new service which requires ultrasound guided intervention. This would normally put extra pressure on an already pressurised system but the new Ultrasound machine will ensure we continue to deliver a first class service to our local community. The machine will also be accessible to other cancer services within the hospital as all tumour groups have seen an increase in activity. The Breast Team would like to thank The Chartwell Cancer Trust for their contribution and continuous support. With regards,

Prakash Sinha Medical Director MBBS, MS, MD, FRCS (Glas), FRCS(Lon)

THE SPIRIT OF THE MASQUERADE! On Friday 23rd November, Trustee Bobby Beech hosted a Christmas Masquerade Ball at Farleigh Golf Club in Warlingham. It was a fantastic night raising £5,500 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust. Bobby Beech reports…. h wow! What a great night we had! With everyone turning up in their finery and getting into the spirit of Masquerade, we made our entrance into our beautifully decorated banqueting room all set to party. To entertain us was Nick Stein who is the most enchanting, charismatic and incredibly talented Magician/Hustler and more. He kept everyone under his spell, whilst constantly raising additional funds for The CCT with his trickery! DJ Dean let the music flow throughout the night and ensured that everyone enjoyed their time on the dance floor too. There was even a ‘Bhangra’ dance-off which was particularly entertaining. So, along with a great meal served to perfection by the Farleigh Team, I would say that the night was a huge success. Thank you to everyone for their fundraising support and generosity. The silent auction and telephone raffle, as always, a huge success.

They treated us to a Christmas party on 5th December on the house! It was a lovely evening, enjoyed by everyone. O’Neills also ran a Christmas raffle in aid of The CCT throughout the festive season. Thank you for your on-going support and we look forward to working with you on future fundraising events this year.

F

rom early December, No 4 and No 5 Mickleham Road were spectacularly decorated to raise money for The CCT and for the children’s Tiger Ward. Their incredible Christmas lights brightened up the whole street. Many families from the local community came to see the wonderful display greeted by Olaf, Santa, Mrs Claus and Mrs Elf, to the delight of the children. Stephen from ‘No 4’ said: “On behalf of Pat, Terry, Lesley and myself (Mrs Clause, Santa, Mrs Elf and Olaf) we would like to thank everyone for their support. We hope you enjoyed visiting us at Mickleham Road as much as we enjoyed meeting you.” Thank you so much to Stephen and Terry for supporting us every year and for making it such a special time for the children. CHRISTMAS DINNER WITH OUR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS AT THE

To accommodate all of our very special supporters we held two Christmas Dinners in the House of Commons in December

S

enior Trustee, Michael Douglas, welcomed guests on both occasions and introduced the speaking guests. After dinner, Michael gave us a brief history of the Charity and introduced Trustee Natalie Reilly. Natalie gave special thanks to those in attendance who had done so much for us throughout the year. Natalie detailed many of the events and projects that our guests had managed, and gave thanks individually and collectively, and led an amazing and well deserved round of applause. On the 7th December our first speaker was Rachel Rogan. Rachel spoke about the Lily Pad Appeal and explained what we were raising £750,000 for. She gave us an insight into the exciting range of projects that we have planned for the year ahead. Rachel described the current condition of the existing facilities for Oncology children in Croydon University Hospital, which left us all in no doubt of the high priority and importance of our appeal. Rachel said that we had made a very good start with the fundraising and thanked everyone present who had donated or pledged support in the year ahead. Rachel received a very warm round of applause. Michael then introduced Dr Ildiko Schuller. Dr Schuller expressed her thanks to Michael and Natalie and the Chartwell team for the support that they had provided over the last few years. Dr Schuller gave us an idea of what an average day on the Ward is like for a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist and the variety of challenges that she and her team face daily. Dr Schuller left us in no doubt that there was no such thing as an average day, but described well some of the humour that exists between doctors and patients, which gave us all a reason to smile. Dr Schuller was accompanied by Dr Colin Cunningham who very kindly agreed to speak for us next year. Michael thanked Dr Schuller for speaking and for the very important work that she does for our families and children, she was justly rewarded with a round of applause. Michael then introduced Lucy Bramley. Lucy gave us a very clear description of the ‘No Isolation’ robots that we have been supplying to children undergoing treatment. Lucy told us that the robots act as a child’s eyes and ears in the classroom, allowing then to keep up to speed with their schooling while undergoing treatment. Lucy explained the benefits that the robots bring which are truly holistic and particularly important to their social inclusion throughout their treatment period which can be three years or even more. Michael thanked Lucy and she received a very warm round of applause. On the 14th December, after Michael’s introduction and Natalie’s special thanks, Michael introduced our first speaker,

22

Lead MacMillan Paediatric Oncology Nurse Specialist, Catherine Wilde. Cat gave thanks to the Charity for the support that they had provided to the Tiger Ward over the years and to Michael for supporting her efforts to get increased staffing levels for the Ward. Cat told us of the great joy that she and her team experience when children go into remission, but also the great sadness when treatment fails. Cat was rewarded with a very warm round of applause. Michael thanked her for the great love and dedication that she gives to some of our very unwell children.

Michael then introduced Mrs Karen Powell. Karen told us about the life of her beautiful and courageous daughter, Sophie. She told us of her dream to raise enough money to buy a holiday home for children like herself, children that were being treated for cancer or leukaemia. Sophie wanted other children battling cancer to share the fun and happy memories she enjoyed while holidaying on the Isle of Wight. Karen told us how inspirational Sophie was and how her drive and determination inspired the Powell family and friends to raise over £100,000 for Children’s Charities. The Powell family provided the funds to us to make the purchase and a beautiful seaside lodge, named ‘Sophie’s Wish’, is now available for families with children undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia free of charge through our charity. Michael thanked Karen for agreeing to share Sophie’s Wish with us and commended her on her courage. Karen replied saying that she loved talking about Sophie. Karen received a remarkable round of applause from our guests, most of whom were in, or very near to tears. Michael then introduced Claire Smith, Head of Teaching for the Safari and Tiger Wards. Claire explained how she had discovered the ‘No Isolation’ robots and, through Cat Wilde, had been introduced to Michael. She explained that she had arranged a demonstration of the robot in the Tiger Ward and that Michael had been invited. Shortly after the

demonstration, she told us that Michael was so impressed with the clear difference that the robots would make to the lives of children undergoing treatment that he made an initial order, far more than she had hoped for! Claire explained in detail how the robots worked and the great benefits that they would bring, and thanked everyone who will be supporting the robots in the future. Michael thanked Claire and she received a very warm round of applause. Michael then introduced Robert Neill MP. He explained that Bob had been a significant contributor to the charity for many years which included generous financial support. Bob thanked Michael and Natalie and the supporters of the Trust for their hard work and congratulated them on another successful year. He gave us some very interesting stories about his career before becoming a Member of Parliament and an insight into the current problems we have over Brexit. After a big round of applause, Michael thanked Bob for his continued support and wished him good fortune with the Brexit outcome. On both evenings, we were entertained by an amazing and talented Soprano, Courtney Noakes. Unsupported, Courtney sang Pia Jesu, Silent Night and O Mio Babbino Cara, and her beautiful and powerful performance brought a tear to many an eye. She received standing ovations each night. We were very lucky to have experienced a live performance by such a talented young artiste. Michael brought both evenings to a close by thanking everyone for their amazing support and particularly the Chartwell Team led by Natalie Reilly. He said that Natalie was the true heartbeat of the charity and that he was fortunate to be working with her on the challenges that lie ahead. He wished everyone a safe journey home, and a healthy, happy and successful 2019.

THE MAGIC OF AV1: The No Isolation Robot

Pioneering technology keeping young Cancer and Leukaemia patients connected to school life, education, friendship and normality as they undergo treatment.

A

n estimated 35,000 children in the UK are battling long-term illness and the traumatic upheaval to their lives and inevitable absences from school can be as devastating as the illness itself. For educators and parents, there has been a frustrating lack of solutions to alleviate the isolation and disruption that these children suffer from as a result of their illness - until now.

INTRODUCING THE AV1 ROBOT Norwegian company No Isolation have developed an ingeniously simple answer in the form of a compact, portable robot. Equipped with microphone, loudspeaker and camera, the AV1 robot acts as the child’s eyes, ears and voice and livestreams direct to a phone or tablet via an app offering a seamless, interactive connection with school wherever the child is. Its handy portability allows the child to participate in every aspect of school life - all being so important for their wellbeing and social development.

OUR COMMITMENT As part of our ongoing commitment to improving and enhancing cancer care for young people in London and the South East, The Chartwell Cancer Trust are working with No Isolation to expand the use of this technology in the UK and introduce these life-changing robots in hospitals and schools across South London and Kent. To date, we have raised funds and built partnerships to support up to

12 trials with young patients with resoundingly successful outcomes reported by the children, medical staff and teachers alike.

OUR FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE We have a vision - to extend the provision of this transformational technology within our community and eliminate isolation and exclusion amongst our children with long-term illnesses. With tried and tested results, we are now looking for partners and sponsors to help us raise the funds and realise our ambitions to bring these lifechanging robots to more young people who are desperately in need of a life-line back to their education, peer groups and everyday lives. Grateful thanks to our first ‘Robot Sponsors’ - partners and staff of Messrs. Clarkson Wright & Jakes, Solicitors and VINCI spearheaded by Paulette West. You have just changed a young child’s life. If you are interested in supporting this pioneering project using technical innovation to change children’s lives, please get in touch to discuss sponsorship opportunities with us.

Every day our young patients suffer from extreme isolation cut off from their world of school and friendships at a critical time developmentally, when they need their support networks most. These little robots have the power to open up the world again for these children and mitigate the educational and social rupture caused by cancer.

100 YEARS OF JAZZ AND SWING ON SATURDAY 2ND MARCH Come and listen to the fantastic sounds of local jazz band, The JPBB, accompanied by guest singer Paul Rhodes, at a charity concert organised by friends Adrian Bashford and Gary Castle, in aid of The Chartwell Cancer Trust.

T

he Jazz Project Big Band began in 2011, founded by Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra (KYJO) manager, Mike Taylor. He had a vision to bring all the parents, ex-players and associates of KYJO out of retirement to play in what he called ‘the old fogies band’. Through hard work and perseverance, the group eventually became a regular rehearsal band for those looking to brush up on their music reading skills and get back into ‘the swing of things’. However, in 2012 Mike was diagnosed with cancer and asked JPBB’s current manager (and drummer) Adrian Bashford to take over. Mike sadly passed away that summer, leaving Adrian to continue running the band as a tribute to Mike and a thank you for all his support of young musicians over the years. By early 2013 JPBB was back upand-running, and gaining more and more fantastic musicians along the way. Then, in a bizarre turn of events Adrian was diagnosed with Tongue Cancer in August 2013, and began Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy in the September. Because of Adrian’s

headstrong nature and determination, Gary Castle, whose family are already he continued to run the band supporters of The CCT, says: “The Jazz throughout his treatment, which Project Big Band are delighted to be eventually led him to find holding an event to JPBB’s current MD, Mike raise funds for The Hatchard, who originally Chartwell Cancer “The band are came just to play piano Trust as cancer has brilliant, the music until it was decided that touched the lives of the band needed proper many of its members. very professional direction, and someone to It’s by holding such and the soloists tell terrible jokes at gigs! events we feel as In 2014, Adrian received particularly talented. though we can keep the memory of our the all clear and was I thoroughly enjoyed loved ones alive officially in remission, and support a great the evening and meaning he could really cause.” get the bit between his would recommend teeth with the band. GROUP MEET-UPS T

he Bromley Childhood Cancer Support Group were in for a real treat when ‘Red Watch’ invited them to visit Orpington Fire Station on Saturday 13th October. Following a very warm welcome and a quick briefing, the Group were split into two and given a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the station by Firefighters Rob and Dan. The children were really excited to find out how they worked and lived in the station, to see the infamous pole, and most of all, the opportunity to sit in the fire engines and try on the equipment.

After a lovely lunch cooked by Red Watch, the Group got to fire the hoses, not as easy as it looks! Rob, Red Watch’s Manager, carried out a fire drill to demonstrate just how quickly they need to get ready. He challenged some of the adults - Szen, Joseph and Michelle - to a race to see who could get their kit on the quickest. Congratulations to the winner Michelle Simpson! Just as the Group were leaving, the alarms went off. A very exciting moment for the children who got to watch Red Watch jump into action, to see the huge double doors open and the fire engine speed off, sirens blaring! It was, however, a false alarm, we are relieved to report. Thank you so much to Red Watch, Station Manager John Owen, and Bromley Borough Commander Terry Gooding, for such a special day, and for the T-shirts and hoodies.

GROUP MEET-UPS T

he Frog Childhood Cancer Support Group’s Halloween party took place on 24th October in Rupert Bear Playroom in Croydon University Hospital. ‘Beth the friendly witch’ flew in to meet the Group and to ask for help in finding her magic sweets. The children, dressed in their favourite Halloween costumes, were all very keen to help. They were given a map where they had to climb up mountains, clamber through sticky mud and fly around on their magic broomsticks to eventually find the magic sweets. After all that running and flying around, the families sat down to some healthy food. The children had a really great time. Thank you to Beth from Nutty’s Entertainment and to Alison and her team from The Greenwich Centre for providing the food.

Then on 13th July 2018 they held their annual Summer BBQ, in a new venue, a local pub with a lovely large garden! The weather was wonderful and everyone enjoyed the food and drink provided. Several activities were arranged to raise money, ending with a Bottle Auction. It was a lovely day out from the office! Bond Bryan’s Tricia Sheehan, mostly persuades other staff members to take part in various activities to raise money, she thought it was about time

like this before, but was always up for a challenge nor minded getting wet! So donning a suitable Pirate outfit she joined the Chartwell team on The CCT Allsorts Boat. Tricia said that she had a really fun day, albeit quite strenuous during the three heats! October saw six brave staff entering the Tonbridge Half Marathon – Rosie Barnes, Christina Burnie and hubby Chris, Jeff Stibbons, Aliresa Datoo and Dominic Whittaker. They are pleased to report that all six finished and, as you can see a couple were very pleased to have finished too! Well done everyone! The final activity was the Christmas Raffle, which they held on 20th December 2018. This involved raffling all manner of items donated by staff, combined with a buffet lunch also provided by the staff. A most enjoyable time was had by all and everyone got into the festive spirit by wearing their best Christmas Jumpers – as you can see!

she did something herself, other than organise others. So on the 8th September 2018 she took on the challenge of participating in the Dragon Boat Race in Bewl Water Reservoir in Lamberhurst. Tricia had never done anything

Bond Bryan’s 2018 target was to raise £500 but in fact, they achieved much more than that, in the region of £3,000! Congratulations and thank you so much for supporting our appeal. Overall, Bond Bryan has raised £8,000 for The Chartwell Cancer Trust, an amazing achievement.

T

here was a brilliant show of support from individuals and local businesses who all recognise the huge importance of this project to redevelop and modernise Paediatric Services for Croydon and ensure that the borough is able to treat and care for its seriously ill Cancer patients to the highest standards possible. Special thanks to: Coversure Insurance for nominating The Lily Pad Appeal as their chosen Christmas Charity, throwing a fantastic Christmas Party and working hard to raise awareness and funds with us. Sussex Innovation Centre for donating the proceeds of their Christmas Party to the Appeal and inviting us to join in the festivities with their staff team. Reed Global for nominating Lily Pad as their chosen Christmas Charity. Croydon Council for showing so much support and donating the proceeds of their Christmas raffle to us.

Madam Mayor Cllr Bernadette Khan for inviting us to the Mayor’s Parlour for a really productive and inspiring meeting to generate fundraising ideas for 2019. Natwest and Bryden Johnson for nominating The Lily Pad Appeal as their Charity of The Year for 2019 – we look forward to working with them closely to raise life-changing funds for the hospital and patients next year! Co-op South Croydon for supporting the appeal as one of their officially endorsed charities. They are also fundraising with raffles, sales and provided goody bags for nurses and patients. Omni Local Business Networking Group for adopting us as their charity for the year. We’ve encountered so much enthusiasm from everyone we meet in Croydon to roll up their sleeves and help us reach our target – and there’s so much to look forward to this year!

Exciting fundraisers in the pipeline for 2019 Just one of the exciting fundraisers in the pipeline for 2019 is a 5k Park Walk at Lloyd Park on Sunday 5 May - so please save the date in your diaries!

T

his is so much more than just a walk in the park, it’s about making lasting change to the future of healthcare and young people in the borough.

Events like this, where the community pulls together behind the cause, is how we reach our ambitious fundraising target. Help us by signing up and raising money for Paediatric Services that Croydon can be proud of and first-rate Cancer Care in the borough that our seriously ill young people can rely on.

CCT NEWS – CROYDON UPDATE

JODIE... a shining star! Last year, we were introduced to a special lady, Jodie Caygill Grigg, and her family. Jodie, 16-years-of-age, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2017. She bravely fought her battle with cancer and, in March 2018, received the good news that she was in remission.

Jodie with her dog, Moose

D

espite having been through so much, Jodie agreed to share her story with us to help raise awareness for The CCT Lily Pad Appeal. What a shining star! After undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Jodie was transferred to CUH. During this time, Jodie received excellent care from the doctors and nurses but she found the environment Jodie in isolation

Jodie, now in remission said: “I felt really happy and so relieved that I didn’t have to go back”. We would like to give special thanks to Jodie and her family for the time and support they have given us. The CCT Lily Pad Appeal is raising £750,000 for the new oncology unit, a crucial part of the multi-million pound project to integrate the Acute Paediatric Services in CUH. It will be used by young patients who are dealing with cancer to help smooth the difficult path they face during years of treatment. Thank you to Jodie and her family for sharing her inspiring story. Also, thank you to Kat and her team at Xpertism for giving up their time to help create the film ‘Jodie’s story’ which can be viewed at www.chartwellcancertrust.co.uk/ lily-pad/ and where you can make a donation to the Lily Pad Appeal.

very ‘depressing’, her room was cramped and dark, with extremely limited facilities, especially for her age group. It was also difficult for Jodie’s parents. They stayed by Jodie’s side day and night, with no proper bed to sleep on. They said: “There’s nothing worse than a sick child. They’ve gone through all of this, they lose their hair, their confidence and are so very ill. Being in isolation in these conditions just makes it that so much harder.”

ESTATE ADMINISTRATION

AND INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING

I

n November 2018 the Office of Tax Simplification released its report into how to simplify the inheritance tax (IHT) system. One of its main recommendations was the implementation of a fully integrated digital system for IHT and for changes to be made to the current forms to reduce and simplify the administration of estates. This included a recommendation to introduce very short forms for the simplest estates and updating the conditions that must be met to be able to complete a short IHT form, so as to bring more estates within this short form procedure. The report also noted other areas of complexity, including the Residence Nil Rate Band and the various gift rules and exemptions. Dealing with estates which involve these areas of taxation can be complicated and the associated IHT calculations are far from straightforward. There were some interesting statistics to come out of the report. For example, whilst IHT forms were completed for 275,000 estates in the UK in the 2015 to 2016 tax year, each year fewer than 25,000 estates in the UK actually got paid IHT. This means in more than 90% of cases often lengthy IHT forms are completed even when no IHT is due. Planning your estate and affairs by an experienced solicitor may mean that your estate administration may be removed or simplified. Completing IHT forms can be one of the most time-consuming element of dealing with an estate administration, so the proposal that this form filling process

should be removed or simplified for a large number of estates is a welcome one. Seeking independent advice from an experienced solicitor or professional in planning your estate may minimise any inheritance tax due. Where an estate is complex or where there is the potential for family conflict it is advisable to appoint independent executors who have no interest in the estate. This could be a family friend or a trusted work colleague or professional executors such as an accountant or solicitor. We highly recommend that you review your will every 3-5 years to ensure that if there are changes in circumstances (i.e review of tax laws, losing touch or falling out with your executor or change in financial circumstances) your will may be changed to accurately reflect your circumstances. e are delighted that Southborough School, Bromley has chosen to support the Tiger Ward for 2019. In December, the pupils got off to an amazing start. They raised £670 at their Christmas concerts, by running their own post office and from a competition to design stamps through to selling and delivering Christmas cards. Thank you so much and we look forward to working with you in the months to come.

I The Co-op has chosen the Tiger Ward again for 2019 which is fantastic news! Their Local Community Fund supports local projects that their members care about and we are delighted that our Tiger Ward Childhood Cancer Support Group, supporting oncology families at the Tiger Ward, Queen Elizabeth, Hospital is considered such a worthy cause. We look forward to be working closely with the Co-op in Shooters Hill and Kidbrooke Park in 2019.

HE’S BEHIND YOU! T he Tiger Ward Childhood Cancer Support Group took a trip to the Greenwich Theatre to watch Robinson Crusoe on Sunday 2nd December. The pantomime had received rave reviews so we knew the families would be in for a good time. Oh yes they would! It was lovely to hear the children laugh so much out loud and join in with the audience participation, whilst enjoying sweets and ice-cream. The Group also received a shout out and got to meet the cast and have their photographs taken, an extra special treat. it was a wonderful afternoon, one to remember. CCT ELVES DELIVER! T

he Toni & Guy Ward had a very special visit from The CCT Elves in December, who delivered Christmas presents to all of the oncology children being treated there. The CCT Elves also delivered a whole range of pyjama’s donated by the ‘Hospital Pyjama Collection’, a group of fantastic oncology Mums that collect hundreds of pairs of pj’s each year.

Charlie Chartwell came along too and gave out goody bags to everyone, courtesy of the Churchill Theatre, Bromley.

The neutropenic cupboard on the ward was also refreshed and topped up with new games, books, colouring, and arts and crafts.

Special thanks to Denmark Hill Car Park for always providing complimentary car parking when we visit the Ward, and for keeping a close eye on the car, while we were unloading our precious cargo.

HEALTHCARE ADVICE

Anal Cancer Anal Cancer is a rare type of cancer that affects the anus (end of the bowel, and while only about 1,300 people are diagnosed with Cancer of the Anus each year in the UK, it’s worth knowing what the main symptoms are.

T

he exact cause of Anal Cancer is unknown, although a number of factors can increase your risk of developing the condition. These include:

• I nfection with human papilloma virus (HPV) – a common and usually harmless group of viruses spread through sexual contact, which can affect the moist membranes lining your body

Having anal sex or lots of sexual partners – possibly • because this increases your risk of developing HPV Having a history of Cervical, Vaginal or Vulval Cancer • • Smoking • Having a weakened immune system – for example, if you have HIV Your risk of developing Anal Cancer increases as you get older, with half of all cases diagnosed in people aged 65 or over. The condition is also more common in women than men.

be carried out to check for Anal Cancer and rule out other conditions. Some of the tests you may have include a: • Sigmoidoscopy – where a thin, flexible tube with a small camera and light is inserted into your bottom to check for any abnormalities • Proctoscopy – where the inside of your rectum is examined using a hollow tube-like instrument (proctoscope) with a light on the end • Biopsy – where a small tissue sample is removed from your anus during a sigmoidoscopy or proctoscopy so it can be examined in a laboratory under a microscope If these tests suggest you have Anal Cancer, you may have some scans to check whether the Cancer has spread. Once these are complete, your doctors will be able to ‘stage’ the Cancer. This means giving it a score to describe how large it is and how far it has spread. You can read more about the stages of Anal Cancer on the Cancer Research UK website.

Symptoms The symptoms of Anal Cancer are often similar to more common and less serious conditions affecting the anus, such as piles (haemorrhoids) and anal fissures (small tears or sores). Symptoms can include: • Bleeding from the bottom (rectal bleeding) • Itching and pain around the anus • Small lumps around the anus • A discharge of mucus from the anus • Loss of bowel control (bowel incontinence) Some people with Anal Cancer don’t have any symptoms. See your GP if you develop any of these symptoms. While they’re unlikely to be caused by Anal Cancer, it’s best to get them checked out.

Diagnosing Your GP will usually ask about your symptoms and carry out some examinations. They may feel your tummy and carry out a rectal examination. This involves your doctor inserting a gloved finger into your bottom so they can feel any abnormalities. Your GP will refer you to hospital if they think further tests are necessary. You should receive an appointment within two weeks if there’s a chance you might have cancer. If you are referred to hospital, a number of different tests may

Treatment If you are diagnosed with Anal Cancer, a team of different specialists will work together to provide the best treatment and care. The main treatments used for Anal Cancer are: • Chemoradiation – a combination of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy • Surgery – to remove a Tumour or a larger section of the bowel If the Cancer has spread and can’t be cured, Chemotherapy alone may be considered to help relieve symptoms. This is knows a palliative care.

The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 27 – 2019

HEALTHCARE ADVICE Chemoradiation is a treatment that combines Chemotherapy (cancer-killing medication) and Radiotherapy (where radiation is used to kill Cancer cells). It is currently the most effective treatment for Anal Cancer. You don’t usually need to stay in hospital when you’re having Chemoradiation.

These side effects are usually temporary, but there’s also a risk of longer-term problems, such as infertility. If you are concerned about the potential side effects of treatment, discuss this with your care team before treatment begins.

In many cases, part of the Chemotherapy is delivered through a small tube called a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) in your arm, which can stay in place until your treatment has finished. The tube means you don’t need to stay in hospital during each of the cycles of Chemotherapy. However, you’ll be attached to a small plastic pump, which you take home with you. A few hospitals now offer tablet Chemotherapy for Anal Cancer, which avoids the need for the pump and PICC.

Other possible long-term side effects can include:

To read more about Chemotherapy visit the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/chemotherapy/what-happens/ Radiotherapy is usually given in short sessions, over several weeks. Your treatment will be carefully planned to ensure the highest possible dose is delivered to the Cancer, while avoiding damage to nearby healthy cells as much as possible. You will probably have a computerized tomography (CT) scan to work out exactly where your Cancer is and how big it is. After the scan, some very small but permanent ink marks may be made on your skin to ensure the right area is targeted accurately each time. Radiotherapy is usually given as a number of treatments where a small dose of radiation is given daily over several weeks. Before treatment starts, your care team will draw up a plan that outlines: • The type of Radiotherapy you’ll have • How many treatment sessions you’ll need • How often you’ll need treatment. Radiotherapy is usually given in one of two ways: • External Radiotherapy – where a machine directs beams of radiation at the cancer • Internal Radiotherapy – where a radioactive implant is placed inside your body near the cancer, or a radioactive liquid is swallowed or injected

For more information on Radiotherapy, visit the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/radiotherapy/what-happens/ Both Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy often cause significant side effects, including: • Tiredness • Sore skin around the anus • Sore skin around the penis and scrotum in men, or vulva in women

• Bowel control problems • Long-term (chronic) diarrhea • Erectile dysfunction • Vaginal pain when having sex • Dry and itchy skin around the groin and anus • Bleeding from the anus, rectum, vagina or bladder Tell your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms so they can be investigated and treated. Surgery is a less common treatment option for Anal Cancer. It’s usually only considered if the Tumour is small and can be easily removed, or if Chemoradiation hasn’t worked. If the Tumour is very small, it may be cut out during a procedure called a local excision. This is a relatively simple procedure, carried out under general anaesthetic, that usually only requires a stay in hospital for a few days. If Chemoradiation has been unsuccessful or the Cancer has returned after treatment, a more complex operation called an abdominoperineal resection may be recommended. This would be carried out under a general anaesthetic. This involves removing your anus, rectum, part of the colon, some surrounding muscle tissue, and sometimes some of the surrounding lymph nodes (small glands that form part of the immune system) to reduce the risk of the Cancer returning. You’ll usually need to stay in hospital for a bit longer after this type of surgery, and during the operation, a permanent colostomy will also be formed to allow you to poo. A colostomy is where a section of the large intestine is diverted through an opening made in your tummy called a stoma. The stoma is attached to a pouch that will collect your poo after the operation. Before and after the operation, you’ll see a specialist nurse who can offer support and advice to help you adapt to life with a colostomy. Adjusting to live with a colostomy can be challenging, but most people get used to it over time.

For more information on living with a colostomy, visit the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/colostomy/living-with/

Outlook The outlook for Anal Cancer depends on how advanced the condition is when it’s diagnosed. The earlier it’s diagnosed, the better the outlook. Compared with many other types of Cancer, the outlook for Anal Cancer is generally better because treatment is often very effective.

• Hair loss – limited hair loss from the head, but total loss from the pubic area • Feeling sick • Diarrhea The C&K FUNdraising Magazine Issue 27 – 2019

Direct Line Group Digital Team to support The CCT for 2019

W

e are delighted that the Direct Line Group Digital Team have chosen to support The CCT for 2019. Back in July, two members of the Digital Team, Dan and Deepak took part in our team tandem skydive, along with other team members who were spectating. Digital Operations Manager, Chloe Hayward, decided there and then to get more involved. She invited The CCT’s Michelle Simpson to the DLGDT office to meet and talk to the whole department and to come up with ideas and a plan for the forthcoming year. On Thursday 18th October, they held their first fundraising event, which was a prosecco evening and quiz night. It was great fun and put everyone in the fundraising mood. Since then, they organised an ‘Afternoon tea’ cake sale on 12th December. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to demonstrate the ‘No Isolation’ robots. Some of the team also volunteered their time to help at the gift wrapping charity event in The Glades Shopping Centre, Bromley. The Group also sponsored the Childhood Cancer Support Group’s Christmas party and pantomime in December. We very much look forward to working with the DLG Digital Team in 2019 and to learn what fundraising plans they have coming up next.

hank you so much to Valley Primary School for supporting The CCT as their chosen charity for the forthcoming academic school year. The school is also challenging the current Guinness World Record for the ‘Longest Line of Pom Poms’! The current official record is 29,312 and they have to make in excess of 30,000 to beat it, and they have until July to do it. Valley Primary School, secretary of the school’s PTA, Charlotte English came up with the pom pom idea. She said: “Whilst challenging this World Record, we will be working closely with the school’s chosen charity of the year The Chartwell Cancer Trust. We have some fun and exciting events coming up where you can help us make the pom poms as well as find out more about the charity.” Their pom pom making got off to a great start at the school’s Christmas Fair on Saturday 8th December. They had a giant pom pom Snowman on display and a stall where you could learn how to make them. The CCT was delighted to attend and join in the fun. Valley School also held a Christmas jumper day which included a pom pom making competition. The CCT’s Michelle Simpson was invited along to the school’s Christingle assembly to announce the class winners and give out prizes. Michelle was also presented with a wonderful cheque for just over £1,000 from the school’s fundraising so far. The school’s pom pom total currently stands at around 8,000, so over 25% of the way there already! Well done everyone! There will be various pom pom making events coming up around the local community. On the 18th and 19th February, during half-term, Valley Primary School will be holding pom pom community masterclasses in The Glades, Bromley between 10am and 4pm and similar classes during the Easter Break. Everyone of all ages are welcome! The School would be grateful for any contributions of pom poms or balls of wool to help them reach their record. We wish Valley Primary School lots of luck! More information can be found on their Facebook Page Valley Primary School - Guinness World Record Challenge.

CCT ABOUT US

The Chartwell Cancer Trust Supporting The Princess Royal University Hospital

T

he Chartwell Cancer Trust supports the Chartwell Unit at The Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough that serves patients from the Bromley Borough, Lambeth, Southwark and beyond in South East London and Kent. Our first fundraising in 2005 was to cover the cost of an extra Health Care Assistant in the Unit. We have since grown into a charity providing a range of support for NHS services not only in The PRUH, but the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich, Croydon University Hospital, King’s College Hospital, Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital. Support at The PRUH includes funding for additional medical staff, capital projects, equipment and training specifically for the Chartwell Unit.

We have raised money for: • T he total refurbishment of the Treatment Suite

and air-conditioning. •A “Virtual Conferencing” facility for a cancer Multi-Disciplinary Meeting Room to host meetings where important decisions are made about the care and treatment of patients

diagnosed with cancer. The upgrade has greatly benefited all patients diagnosed with cancer within the community that we serve. •C omputers and laptops for The PRUH’s Virtual Cancer Clinics and the Chartwell Unit. •S pecialist wheelchairs, medical pumps and nursing equipment for the community nursing teams. • T he continuation of brain research on Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma research led by Consultant Haematologist, Dr Shireen Kassam. • I n 2016, we were also instrumental in succeeding to overturn the management decision to close the inpatient Unit, an achievement which we are extremely proud of.

£350,00 FOR A NEW ENDOSCOPY UNIT IN THE PRUH Mr Prakash Sinha, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast and Endocrine Surgeon specialises in breast cancer surgical treatment and surgery of the thyroid gland. He has been a consultant surgeon for the last nine years; his NHS base is The Princess Royal University Hospital.

Mr Sinha has recently been appointed as Medical Director of The PRUH. There is an area that has been allocated for a new Endoscopy Unit to provide treatment for cancers of the bowel and all other areas of the gut. There is no funding available to furnish it and we have agreed with Mr Sinha to raise the £350,000 that is needed. We rely on our supporters to help make all of this happen through donations and fundraising events.
