Welcome to Charterhouse Online 4 CHARTERHOUSE ONLINE

Building on the exceptional academic traditions of Charterhouse School, we offer an innovative, one-year A-Level programme for academically ambitious young people wanting to study at some of the best universities in the world.

Charterhouse Online offers a unique, accelerated programme using inspirational live teaching together with an interactive self-study programme that will enable motivated students to succeed on these demanding courses in only one year.

An important highlight will be the opportunity to attend two residential modules here, on the truly magnificent Charterhouse campus. These modules will provide the perfect opportunity to develop your examination and practical skills as well as to visit some of the universities of your choice. Those students wishing to prepare for Oxbridge or medical applications will attend a further week-long residential course before the main academic year begins.

The foundation of our educational approach will be live, synchronous, lessons, taught online in small A-Level classes. These lessons will be supplemented by live university tutorials and subject clinics. Students will typically attend 5 live lessons per subject, per week, two university tutorials plus a university preparation lesson and a clinics per subject, per week.

We look forward to meeting you online as well as welcoming you to the Charterhouse campus.

Introduction to the Programme

The Charterhouse Online programme runs across a slightly extended academic year, from August until public examinations in the following June each year. The teaching and learning provision offers a sophisticated blend of live, interactive online lessons, supplemented by directed self-study in each subject all overseen by an academic Tutor.

Charterhouse Online’s curriculum delivers Cambridge International A Level courses (examined in over 180 countries worldwide in six subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics; Further Mathematics and Physics.

UK universities traditionally make Honours degree place offers to students based on three A Levels and this will be the expectation of students enrolled with Charterhouse Online, although one and two A Level options are also offered.

These A Level subjects will support applications to the top universities across the world on a wide range of Honours degree courses.

Chemistry Economics Mathematics Further Mathematics Physics 6 CHARTERHOUSE ONLINE

All subjects will follow the relevant Cambridge International Advanced Level syllabus. These are considered to be the ‘gold standard’ in the international market as they are particularly suited for students for whom English is not their first language but are academically challenging for all students.

Nonetheless, these are demanding qualifications studied and assessed in English and students will be required to attain the equivalent of IELTS 6.5, or more if applying to Oxbridge or Medicine. Students should, therefore, expect to be able to provide evidence of a suitable level of English Language proficiency as part of the Admissions process.

Cambridge International A Levels are taught and examined in over 10,000 schools and 180 countries worldwide. Many of these schools enable private candidates to sit Cambridge examinations at their school and we will support students with identifying suitable schools and registering for their examinations. Arrangements can also be made for students to take their examinations at Charterhouse UK.

University applications

Charterhouse Online is superbly well placed to support each of our students in their applications to top universities building on the vast experience of Charterhouse School’s success in preparing generations of sixth form students for the next stage of their academic careers.

Each student will have a dedicated Tutor throughout their time on the programme who will guide them through the demands of choosing the right university and course, writing a Personal Statement for a UCAS application or preparing their Common Application for a US university.

Support in preparing for ACT and SAT tests for US applications can also be provided.

Students wishing to apply for Oxford, Cambridge or Medicine in the UK will undertake additional Admissions assessments and will also attend an Oxbridge & Medicine Course prior to the start of the full academic year. This course will prepare them for the early deadlines for these courses including specialist tests such as BMAT.

Our approach to teaching and learning

Daily face to face teacher led interaction is the mainstay of each course. This close supervision allows the development of real expertise in the subject and accelerated progress to be made. Live classes (in typically small A Level class sizes) are supplemented by self-study and subject specific clinics.

Students study from home, able to access different forms of teaching resources. The main course content is delivered through a flipped learning approach, with students able to work through interactive self-study materials to acquire the knowledge and content necessary for the different topics. This will use a blend of lectures available on demand, and interactive materials that guide the learner through the subject material and provide regular testing and feedback to ensure understanding.

Pupils are expected to devote 6 hours per week to directed self-study for each subject.

Typically, students will have a live lesson in each of their three subjects every day as well as a Tutorial or Subject Clinic to allow them to get one-to-one help with any aspect of a subject they are finding challenging.

The blend of interactive, carefully structured, self-study materials and live online lessons enables students to make rapid progress through the curriculum. This builds the skills of independent learning, intellectual curiosity and self-disciplined application to studies that are so highly valued by universities and employers.

There will also be plenty of time for social activities and potentially visits to one or two university campuses ahead of applications.

The second residential module will be more focussed on ensuring full preparation for examinations. This will include exam style mock examinations, further practical work in science subjects and tailored academic input and advice on revision techniques.

A third residential module will take place prior to the start of the full academic year for those students wishing to apply to Oxbridge & Medicine courses.

Admissions Requirements

Academic Requirements

All potential students will be required to take subject specific tests in each of the subjects they wish to study at A Level. For Economics, which may not have been studied previously, these tests will assess a student’s aptitude to be successful at A Level in this field.

For students who have followed the GCSE or IGCSE curriculum, we will look for actual grades of 7-9 or A-A* in at least seven subjects and a grade 8 or better in subject to be followed at A Level, or the equivalent in the qualifications of your home country.

If students are uncertain about whether this course is right for them, or have questions about qualifications, they are warmly encouraged to contact the Admissions Office who will be delighted to provide more information.

English Language Requirements

Charterhouse Online’s accelerated A Level Programme is an English language medium course, with all teaching, tutorial support and other activities conducted in English. It is, therefore, essential that all students can demonstrate the appropriate level of proficiency in English in order to access the course and to successfully navigate its different elements.

Those students who are native speakers of English, or who have grown up in an English-speaking country may be exempt from the requirement to submit evidence of English language proficiency. All other students will be required to provide evidence of this at the point of application.

Successful study with Charterhouse Online will require an IELTS score of 6.5 or the equivalent. Information regarding IELTS can be found at https://www.ielts.org/for-test-takers/how-to-register If you believe you have an equivalent qualification, then please contact the Admissions Office who will be able to advise you.
